Why We Need Teachers

You have probably heard it said many times – the world has

Teachers today are no longer simply providers of information but now are interpreters of information and need to train their students to do the same. With all that is available online, it is more essential than ever that students have a guide to walk them towards what they should be learning and how best to learn it. Not everything that students encounter is true or good for them, so an informed teacher can train a young person to decipher, contextualise and analyse the input that he or she is receiving.

Some educationalists hold to the idea of a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The ZPD is the difference between what a student can do on his or her own and what he or she can do when assisted by a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), such as a teacher or parent. This MKO is able to help build or scaffold the learning of the students, moving them from

their students. While a teacher’s words are important, more is learned from how teachers behave than from what they say. It is crucial that teachers model good character like resilience, perseverance, honesty and responsibility. All around the world, we have seen teachers showing incredible initiative to learn new ways of teaching – online or hybrid learning – and demonstrating creativity and innovation. Despite the already challenging job of teaching and imparting to young lives new ways of learning, teachers have selflessly been working to ensure their students are taken care of both mentally and emotionally.

Times have changed, but teachers are needed now more than ever. Teachers are called on to be bright lights guiding their students through the cloud of confusion and difficulty.

While teachers have and will continue to adapt to meet the needs of each student and their circumstances, one thing should remain the same: their love and devotion for their students must never change.

Introduction Dr. Karla J. Smith, one of SJIS’s governors, is an International Senior Education and Literacy Consultant with more than 40 years’ experience in education. She earned her Doctorate in Sociolinguistics and Education at CDU, Australia, and has taught courses at the postgraduate MA level, applied linguistics and multilingual education, at Universities in Australia, England, USA and Thailand. She has been a Multilingual Education Consultant for LEAD Asia since 2003 and has been an advisor to the Ministry of Education in Timor Leste since 2014. She currently continues as an international education and literacy consultant in the Asia-Pacific area.

Cautionary tale: Sool the Fool

By Tai Wen, Ang Zen Keen & Chloe There was once a boy named Sool, Who hated going to his school.

His father wanted him to study, But he said he wanted money.

When he was forced to stay at school, He would sit there like a little fool.

When his moths teacher asked a question, He would say, “What’s the equation?”

After so long, he finally had enough.

Then he said loudly, “I’m leaving school!”

He stared snatching bags of cash And soon piled up a massive stash He was known all over the country As the thief who stole your money Soon the police was on his trail And he realised he was going to jail So he panicked and left like a mouse But the police were already at his house And so he was imprisoned ALL because he didn’t go revision So this is why you should go to school To not end up like little Sool!

PAST EVENT Parents’ Meet 1

Our first Parents' Meet 2021 was held on 24th April (Saturday) at the SJIS Multipurpose Hall. The purpose of this Parents' Meet was to brief them on some programs in the school such as Class Dojo, Literacy Pro as well as the Parenting Support Program. About 75% of our parents were present that day.
