MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL PAULUS LEE

Dear Students and ㎩rents, On the 18th of October 2020, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) featured a compilation of various responses by experts entitled �Constant Change Due to CMCO Can Impact A Child�s Development�. FMT cited many good points that are note-worthy, especially relating to how the pandemic has affected the emotional and mental development of children.

One of the experts talked about how the frequent changes to the learning platforms actually rob children of a consistent routine in their learning: one moment, it�s physical classes; the next moment, it�s online classes. This is especially true for schools in certain states in Malaysia that have had to close again due to the CMCO. This could potentially create an insecurity in many children. And in these situations, research shows that our brains would in turn produce a response that makes it difficult for us to learn and study, which leads to a lack of productivity. To quote a teacher, �The key to a successful learning environment is structure�. Yet, the challenge to preserve a structure for our children�s learning in times such as these is indeed difficult.

Another expert highlighted another issue which was about how the CMCO period also denied children their nature of wanting to play and make friends. Play and social interaction, as we know it, is such a vital aspect of a child�s development. This deficit was clearly seen during the national MCO period where children had to go through a phase of greater solitude and detachment. Not being able to have a relationship with friends potentially contributed to a feeling of insecurity and depression among children.

As much as we can identify with the current situation, much of which we have no control over, I would like to encourage us to look to the things we can change to adapt to the situation at hand. AWARENESS and SUPPORT are the two key things that we are able to do. We must be AWARE of the effects and recognise the seriousness this pandemic has on our children�s mental and emotional health. Then only can we SUPPORT our children and

students to adapt, by providing useful tools for learning and development. There is no silver bullet that can solve all our problems, but as we continue to increase AWARENESS and SUPPORT, we will definitely find a way!

On the 10th of October, which was the World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) commented on the need to focus on increasing our awareness and support of mental health amidst this pandemic. So, we too, as a school, would like to assure parents and students of our commitment to support you as we chart forward together.

STUDENT’S CORNER Part of nurturing global citizens includes exposing students to the world and the beauty, variety and diversity that comes with it. Thus, we make every effort to provide opportunities for our students to engage with others on an international level. As part of this effort, our school has a standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Handong Global University (HGU) in South Korea, offering various opportunities for collaboration through exchange programs, and Annual Summer Leadership Camps.

In our last issue of Jubli Times, as part of our HGU collaboration special, we featured one of Seri Jubli�s alumni, Ethan Raj (class of 2017), who is currently studying there. In this issue, let us hear from our students who attended the Handong Leadership School.

What is Handong Leadership School (HLS)?

HLS is a one-week program organised by Handong Global University (HGU) in Pohang, South Korea. It is designed for high school students who want to have a rich cultural experience in a safe environment. It is held on the HGU campus and runs on a strong set of values that helps students build the foundation for their lives, beyond their high school and university. The program itself involves Korean cultural activities, from Korean traditional dance to Kpop, from Taekwondo to Korean traditional instruments. They also have a day of exploring Korea off campus. Students visit Gyeong Ju, which is the ancient capital of Korea and experience the local markets and culture. But the strength of HLS is that students get a taste of the unique Handong team system.
