WehavecomeacrosscountlessquotesonFAILURE.MotivationaltalkshavebeenconductedaboutFAILURE.Evenbooks havebeenpublishedaboutFAILURE.Yetthewordstillbafflesusandisbrandedatabooinmanysocietiesandcultures.We knowintheorythepower,effectandimportanceofembracingfailure.Howmanyatimeshaveweheardpeopleencourage us–Don’tbeafraidtofail.Butifwe’rereallyhonest,itbecomesawholedifferentthingwhenitactuallysmacksusrightin theface.However,asmuchasIrelatetothissentiment,wemustcontinuethemarchtotaketherightstanceonfailure.As whatthefamousIrishauthorBramStrokeroncesaid,“Welearnfromfailure,notfromsuccess”,Itrulyresonatewiththis statement.Asaneducator,Ibelievewemustalllearntonavigatethroughfailureandconstantlyencouragethosearoundus todothesame.
Inhisbook“FailingForward”,theguruofLeadership–JohnC.Maxwellwrote,“At somepoint,allgreatachieversaretemptedtobelievetheyarefailures.Inspiteof that,theypersevere.Inthefaceofadversity,shortcomingsandrejection,theyhold ontoself-beliefandrefusetoseethemselvesasfailures.”Tosimplyputit,he encourageshisreaderstohaveaFailingForwardmindset,whichistheabilityto reboundfromfailureandkeepmovingforward.Belowisachecklistheprovideson thedifferencebetweenfailingbackwardandforward.

Afterteachingfortenyearsnow,andwiththepandemicthelasttwo years,Ihavefoundthatbuildingmotivationanddevelopinga willingnesstolearnwithinstudentsaremoreimportantthan academicresults.Frommyteachingexperienceinvarious internationalschoolsafteralltheseyears,Ireallyseeadifference whenastudentisbeingforcedtolearnascomparedtowhentheyare motivatedtolearnforthemselves.Thelatterresultsincontinuous learning,andnotjustlearningforthesakeofexams.
toparticipateincompetitionsandevenmingle aroundwithstudentsfromdifferentschools.
Athome,parentscanalsoencouragechildrento buildmotivationinapositiveway,whichis importantforbuildinghabitsthatlast.Yourchild maybeunmotivatedtostudyforanumberof reasons.First,findingtherootoftheproblemwill helpyouandyourchilddevelopaplanto overcomethebarriersthatarepreventinghimor herfromcompletingtheirhomework.
AccordingtoRheinberg(2000),self-regulatedlearningisgoal-oriented, consciousandnotunderateacher’simmediatecontrol.Toregulate self-learning,learningmotivationplaysaparticularlyimportantrole. Afterthepandemic,wehaveseenachangeintheattentionspanof ourstudents.Post-pandemicstudentsrequiremorestimulationslike videosandcolourfulpicturestocapturetheirattention.Thishasalso madeteachingmore challengingforteachers astheyhaveto constantlycomeupwith newwaystoattractthe students'attention.If studentsarenot motivatedtolearn,they endup“switchingoff” theirbrainsveryquickly asnothinginthe classroomisableto stimulatethemand catchtheirattentions.
Studentswillbemorepronetoplayingonlinegamesorwatching onlinevideoswhicharemoreattractivetothem.
Itmaytakesometimeforstudentstogetusedtowhatwasnormal. Hence,theyneedalotofmotivation,likedifferentphysicalactivities, tohelpthemnotbedistractedbythevirtualworld.Withtheschool’s CCAandotheractivitiesresuming,studentshavemoreopportunities
Whenthatisdone,parentscanassistinmaking studytimeaseasyaspossibleforyourchild(ren) byprovidinghimorherwithwhateverisneeded togettheirworkdone.Forexample,aquietspace. Next,Iwouldliketosuggestthat,insteadof focusingprimarilyongrades,docelebrate milestoneswhicharerelatedtolearning,no matterbigorsmall.Forexample,whenyourchild successfullysolvesatrickymathproblem,orwhen heorshefinisheswritingthefirstdraftofan essay.Whenswitchingthefocustolearning,your childcanfindmoreenjoymentinaccomplishing work.Thiswillhelptoboosttheirmotivation. Throughpositivemotivationandencouragement, studentswillbeabletochallengethemselvesto stretchbeyondtheirperceivedlimits.


投身于教育领域十年至今,加上过去 两年所经历的疫情肆虐,我发现让学 生们建立起学习动力和培养学生们的 学习意愿远远比学业成绩来得更加重 要。根据这些年我在各所国际学校的 教学经验来看,学生被迫学习和主动 学习的不同显而易见。主动学习能引 领学生们自主地学习,而不仅仅是为 了考试而学习。
根据莱茵贝格(2000),自主学习是 有目标导向、有意识的,并且不受到 老师们的控管。为了能管理自主学 习,学习动力起着特别重要的作用。 疫情后,我们发现到了学生们的注意 力范围发生了变化。后疫情时期的学 生需要的是更多刺激性的学习方式, 例如视频和彩色图片来吸引他们的注 意力。这也使老师们的教学更具挑战 性,因为他们需要不断地想各种新的
方法来吸引学生们的注意力。如果学生 们没有任何学习动力,他们将很快地把 他们的大脑给“关闭”了,因为对于他 们而言,课堂上已经没有任何东西能够 刺激他们并引起他们的注意了。相对 的,学生们将更倾向于对他们更有吸引 力的线上游戏或者是观看线上视频。
学生们可能需要一些时间来适应现今的 情况。因此学生们也急需更多的学习动 力,比如说不同的体育类型活动,以帮 助他们免于网络世界的干扰。随着学校 课外活动等等的活动恢复正常,学生们 有更多的机会参加比赛,甚至能与不同 学校的学生进行交流。

在家里,父母亲也应当鼓励孩子们以积 极向上的方式建立学习动力。这对于养 成持续性习惯很重要。基于各种原因, 您的孩子可能缺乏学习动力。首先,寻

ByIsabelJeevikaJohnson(Year7)ThefirsthalfoftheSJGames2022tookplaceonthe8thof July.ThefourHousesofSJIS:Aeris,Aqua,IgnisandTerra competedinthedifferentsportsevents,strivingtobethe championhouse.Thestudentswereabletotakepartin manygamesincludingBadmintonandCaptain’sBall.Let menowtellyouaboutwhatwentdownonthiscompetitive day.
Whenthedaystarted,theteamswerescreamingwith excitement,everyonecouldn’twaittostarttheevent.Asthe announcerkick-startedSJGames2022,thestudentsand teachersheadedtothefieldtodotheirwarm-upsintheir respectiveteams.


Then,thefirstmatchstarted(badminton).Theaudience gatheredonstagetowatchtheBadmintonMixed-Doubles forU15andU18whilethecompetitorswenttotheir designatedcourts.ForU15,AquawentagainstTerra,and IgniswentagainstAerisforthefirstround.Meanwhileon theothercourts(U18),TerrawentagainstAeris,andAqua wentagainstIgnisfortheirfirstround.Asthegames started,theaudience’seyesshiftedfromlefttorightas mostofthematcheswereunpredictable.Intheend,Aqua’s DheebanKumarandSofiebintiZaidiwonthegoldmedal
fortheU15category,andJustinTangandYeoXuXin(Estee), alsofromAqua,wonthegoldmedalfortheU18category.
Aftertheheatedbadmintonmatches,thecompetitorsfor Captain’sBall(forU14andU18)andBadmintonSingles (MaleandFemaleforU15andU18)tooktheirplacesin theirrespectiveareas.Thegamesstartedandthe participantstriedtotackletheiropponentsandwinfortheir teams.WhiletheCaptain’sBallmatcheswereongoing,the primaryparticipantsforBadmintonsingles(Maleand FemaleforU12)tooktheirplacesandwentaheadwiththeir rounds.
ForCaptain’sBallU14,AquawonfirstplaceandIgniswon secondplace.Ontheotherend,intheCaptain’sBallU18,it wasanextremelyclosefightbutfinally,Terramanagedto clinchthegoldmedalandAeriswonthesilvermedal. Aweeklater,on15thJuly2022,thesecondpartoftheSJ GameswasheldattheKluangStadium.Otherthanthe teachers,staffandstudents,manyparentsalsocameto givetheirsupport!Westartedoffthedaywiththe TelematchsegmentfortheKS1students(Year1toYear3). Theteacherspreparedaseriesoftelematchesforthemas theyplayedagainsteachotherintheirrespectiveHouses. Therewasevenaspecialparent-child3-leggedrace! Afterthat,westartedthetrackandfieldevents:100metres, 200metresand4x100metres.Eachhousesenttheir representativesforeachcategory(U12,U15andU18;male andfemale),hopingtowinamedalfortheirHouses!Asthe competitionbegan,thespectatorswatchedandcheeredto supporttheirteammembers.Asthetrackandfieldevents drewtoaclose,wehadonelasthighly-anticipatedmatch–Theteacher-student4X100mrace!Thismatchwas especiallyexcitingaseachteamconsistedof2teachersand 2students.Itwasareallyclosefightbutfinally,TeamAeris won1stplaceforthisevent!Afterwecompletedallthe

Weendedthedaywithourprize-givingceremony.After addingupallthescores,itwasAquathatwasannouncedas theChampionHousefortheSJGames2022!Inaddition,the bestwomenathleteswereSofiebintiZaidi(Secondary)and SuvethikaA/PMathyarasan(Primary)fromAquaandthe bestmaleathleteswereDheebanKumarfromAqua (Secondary)andNereusTanfromIgnis(Primary).Allinall,it wasagreatday!

On16thJuly,wesentourveryfirstHandballteamto competeintheMSSDHandballCompetition!Theteam, consistingof11players,competedagainsttwoother schoolsonthatday.Eventhoughtheydidnotmanageto advancetothenextround,theyshowedfantasticteamspirit &effort!Now,letushearfromTeamCaptain,Dheeban Kumar(Year9),abouttheirexperience.

•Asweregisteredforthecompetitiononquiteshortnotice, webegantrainingonlytwoweeksbeforethecompetition. Wetrainedthreetimesaweek.Sointotal,wehadsix trainingsessionsbeforethecompetition.

•WefacedtwoschoolsinthegroupstagewhichwereSMKT6 andSSAJ.InourfirstmatchagainstSSAJ,alloftheplayers feltthejittersasitwasourfirstofficialmatch.So,wedid notperformtothebestofourabilitieswhichleadtoaloss. InoursecondmatchagainstSMKT6,theentireteambegan togetinthegrooveandwehadfunonthecourtwhile givingourbest.Despiteanotherloss,thiswasoneofthe bestmatchesourteamhasplayedsofarfromatactical aspect.Overall,webelieveourlosseswerenotduetoalack ofskillsbutratheralackofexperience.Althoughwefelta littledejected,asateam,webelievethisisjustthe beginningofanewchapterandareeagerlylookingforward tonextyear’scompetition.Asthesayinggoes“Winners neverquitandquittersneverwin!”

TheMSSDBasketballChampionshiptookplacefromthe 19thto24thofJuly2022.TeamSeriJubli,consistingof12 players,alsorepresentedourschoolfortheveryfirsttime. Althoughtheyweretheunderdogsofthecompetition,our boysmanagedtobeattwootherteamsinthegroupstageto advancetothesemi-finals!Intheend,eventhoughtheydid notqualifyforthefinals,theystilldidourschoolproudby placing4th!Now,letushearfromoneofthefirstfive players,ChingZiYang(Year11),abouttheirexperience.

•Iamthecentre/powerforward intheteam.Ourteamcaptain, HuiGuanandJosepharethe pointguard/shootingguardof theteam,andHugoandHao Binarethesmallforward/ powerforwardoftheteam.We haveatotalof12players.

Q:Howlongdidyoualltrainforandhowfrequently?
•PriortotheMSSD,we’vealwaysplayedwitheachotherfor fun,butweonlyactuallystartedtrainingseriouslywithour coach,Denny,for2-3months.Wehavetrainingoncea weekandourcoachcomestoourschoolonceevery2 weeks.
Q:Tellmemoreaboutthecompetition.
•Onthefirstdayofthecompetition,itwasreallyintense sincethiswasthefirsttimeourschoolwascompetingin theMSSDandmanyofourplayershavezeroexperiencein anactualcompetition.Ourfirstgamewasagainstreigning Champion,ChongHwaHighSchool.Whencompeting againstschoolslikethemandSMKKahang,wewere dominatedbythem.Thelackofexperienceandpreparation weresomeofthereasonswhywelost.Ontheotherhand, weactuallymanagedtoachievesomevictoriesaswell whenweplayedagainstSMKDARAandSMSains Sembrong.Eventhoughitwashard,westillmanagedtoget tothesemi-finals.Notbadforourfirsttime!

•Overall,Ithinkourresultsweredecent(4thplace).Thiswas agoodexposurefortheyoungerandinexperienceplayers. Eventhoughthisismylastyear,Istillhopethattheycan learnfromthisexperienceandimprove.Ibelievethatinthe future,theycanachievebetterresultsandcontinuetoexcel intheirskills,teamworkandcommunication.Iwouldliketo thankmyteammatesforbelievinginmeandCoachDenny forgivinguspreciousadvice.Thanksalsotoourclub teachersforalwayssupportingusnomatterwhat.Lastbut definitelynotleast,thankyoutoourdearfriendsand teacherswhocametogivetheirsupportandmotivatethe team.

On25thJuly,twoofourSJISstudents,DheebanKumar&Tan GuiKai,representedtheschoolattheMSSDBadminton Tournament.DespiteitbeingtheirfirstMSSDtournament, GuiKaiputupagoodfightbutfinallylosttohisopponent. Dheeban,ontheotherhand,managedtowin30-15inhis firstround,beforeadvancingtotheroundof16wherehe unfortunatelylost.
Wearereallyproudofourstudentsfortakingupthis challengetocompeteinthiscompetition.Wearesurethey willdobetternextyear!

After3years,wewerereallyexcitedtofinallyhavetheSeriJubli Carnivalagain!Ittookplaceovertwodays(23rdand24thJuly) atKluangMall.WestartedofftheCarnivalwiththePrimary EnglishStorytellingCompetitionthatwasopentostudentsfrom allprimaryschoolsinKluang.Representativesfromeachschool weredressedinuniqueandcolourfulcostumesasthey presentedtheirstories.ForSeriJubli,TanRuiYao(lower primary)andLimShengJie(upperprimary)werethe representatives.Inbetween,wealsohadaspecialperformance bytheChoirTeamandtwosolosongpresentationsbyJocelyn ChowandNgZynon.TheDanceClubalsoperformedaKpop Dance(GetCoolbyStrayKids).
Otherthanthat,wealsohadongoingboothsandgames.The EnglishandMathematicsboothswereespeciallypopular.For theEnglishbooth,webuiltaGiantScrabblewherepeoplecould trytoformwordsusingthetilesgivenforachancetowina



prize!FortheGeometry&Mathematicsbooth,weprepareda specialchallenge–boxstacking.Manypeople,bothyoungand old,triedtosetthehighestrecordforMostBoxesStacked!
WealsohadArtandScienceMiniWorkshopsforchildrenaged5 to16years.FortheScienceWorkshops,theactivitiesincluded buildinganelasticcar,acatapultoranelectroniccircuit.For theArtworkshop,therewaspopsiclepainting,stonepainting andmakingacaterpillar!Allinall,wehadasuccessfulCarnival overtheweekend!
