What Are Digital Assistants?
Digital assistants like Alexa and Cortana are playing an increasing role in modern life.
Available on most smartphones, computers and digital devices, as well as standalone devices like Amazon Echo, they combine specialised software with microphones and computer chips to listen for specific voice commands and queries, analysing information on the internet and providing the most appropriate response. Today, there are five main digital assistants on the market, namely:
• Alexa
• Cortana
• Siri
• Google Assistant
• Bixby
Digital assistants can do anything
from answering queries to playing music, telling jokes and controlling items in the home such as door locks, thermostats, lights and smart home devices. They can also send text messages, set up reminders and make phone calls. In simple terms, anything you can do on your smartphone, a digital assistant can probably do for you.
Digital assistants learn over time, getting to know user preferences and habits to make them smarter and more effective. Leveraging AI, they understand natural language, as well as being capable of identifying objects, recognizing faces and communicating with other software and smart devices.
