GREEN WOOD Year: 2016 Project location: Greenwich, London, England Project type: Nursery School - Architecture & Landscape Professor: Antida Gazzola, Adriano Maiocco, Adriana Ghersi Collaboration team: Stefania Minguzzi GreenWood, project for a nuresry school in Greenwich burn from a competition called by AWR (Architecture Workshop in Rome). The first step of the project was the achievement of a sociological analysis about Greenwich's area and their locals; from here the firs goal: project a traditional nursery school, for people of every social background. Afterwards we made research about traditional school, mostessoy school and steiner system. From the result of this research we decide to put in our project the best elements of the montessori and steiner system, like the learning of number and letter, a first approach to the tecnology and the art world, for what concerns Montessori's system, instead for the Steiner's system we choose for the close relationship with the nature and a first approach with arts & crafts. The urban analysis of the surrounding area doesen't find any rules that we could use for the design of the building, for this reason Greenwood is different with the surrounding building without be in conflict with them

First design step whose the setup of the building like a continue of the other buildings. The building have his maximum height on the side road and an open lower facade on the park and river front. From the maximum height of 5 meter, request from the competition, the roof goes untill the soil, making a continuity with it, and becoming a partially walkable playground. Finally the roof is divided in many different triangular flap that has different inclination visible from the park side of the nursery school. Inside the building hold four square class room. Subsequently with a prolungation of the classroom's axis we create two different external pavimentation. The one's between the classroom is made by gravel, instead of the second, that is made by wood and represent the perteining area of every classroom

The interior spaces are organized with all all the facilities required by the competition.The main entrance is located on the ovest facade, a big covered waiting area, organized with some sitting places. This space is connected with the entrance hall of the nursery school, a big furnished area that connects with the services spaces placed in the north part of the building, like the voicemail, the presidency and the infirmary. Next to them there is the dinning hall, who has got two glass walls on the east and south sides for have a visual connection with the outside playground park. Connected with the dinning hall there is a kitchen and a storage. On thr opposite side, from the entrance hall you can have access throw a flight in a big open spaces 50 cm lower. This big open space drive to all the classrooms and is in the same time an inside playground area furnished with different kind of games for the childreen. From this open spaces, on the ovest side, you can also enter in the lockers room and the sleeping room. This rooms aren't visible from the open space because they are close with a wood wall who becomes a kind of second skin, who prenset some folder door

All the spaces are studied for have the right ventiation and illumination; the dinning room and the classroom have the east and south side completly made with glass. Furthermore in every classroom there is a ventilation system who present a radint pannel in the external glased facade for make warm the air during the winter period; with this system is garanted the correct air exchange in the spaces .that are more crowded during the day

In the open space insted the air exchange is garanted by the open glass wall located in front of the park and with skylights located on the roof. The skylights has also the function to give the right light in the spaces, like the locker room, who don't have other window, because they don't need so much light. The services spaces and the sleeping room, who dosen't need a lot of light have long and tiny window on the ovest facade

The strucuture of the building is made with the X-lam tecnology. the type that we choose is the 5 layer x-lam with a thickness of 150 mm for all the walls and 180 mm for the roof. The x-lam pannels of the roof base theirself to a principal beams system made by laminated wood with a section of 30x50 cm. The beams, who are located for have a highlights of 12 m, are conncted by dovetail joints, and they are supported by a particular kind of pilar, studied for the school. This pilar are made with wood, like all the structure, and have the shape of a tree, for give the impression that the nature that

is outside in the park can come inside the building. These in fact, in addition to the stem, possess the supporting arms, which represent the branches of the tree and which constitute the vehicle for relieve the weight of the structure above the ground. The arms are connected to the central trunk and to the main beams by a metal plates which, inserted inside them, working in shear, constituting a static chain that holds the entire structure. The pillar is then fixed to the ground by a columnfoundation joint steel

All the outside spaces was completely draw; with an antischock flooring we mark the outside surrounding spaces of each classroom: in front of every there are four play areas that reflect the colors of their respective classrooms, becoming an open air classroom. Around the two pavillon there is a teak floor, that is the continuation of the wood roof of the main building. In fact, the roof of the main building is partialy walkable, untill the height of two meters, and is an extra play area where the children can climb with the helps of ropes. Close to the craft pavillon the floor gets up again untill it becomes the roof of the pavilion, where the children can climb. In front of this pavillon is located a 110 m2 educational gardens. Close to it, starts a sensorial path where the children can imrove their knowledge about the five sense with the help of the nature. Were selected plants and shrubs and create green areas for each of the five senses, surrounded by a clay path.

At the end of the sesorial pathis located, close to the kitchen area of the main building, an area of 295 square meters used as a meeting point for parents who are waiting for their children. In this space they have the opportunity to sit on the benches, and refresh themself in the gazebo close to the cafeteria. Finally there is a cherry three surrounded by a big sitting area. This tree is in front of the entrance hall of the nursery school, and represent a visual connetion between the inside and the outside space. Furthermore the tree becomes the means to learn the cycle of the seasons, as it has the characteristic of changing appearance in every period of the year. The various areas described above are finally connected with each other via various routes in stabilized clay, which as well as having a function of connecting the game zones and areas of learning, divide the remaining space in various parts of green

The project is completed by the design of two external laboratories in which are placed extra recreational activities. The two laboratories resume, iwith their desind and for the activities that the children can carried out them, the Steiner system(Above left) and Montessori system (at right plant). The Montessori pavillon's design is suitable for children so that they can express themselves freely and interact with the materials proposed. The pavilion Montessori, in fact, has a kitchen area, a small lounge and two spaces dedicated to art and technology. In the second one, th Steiner pavillon, instead the interior looks like a cave by the moves and curved walls and dug in several places to form the shelves that contain the tools that childreens need to craft in the proposed activties. The Steiner ideology, in fact, provides a first approach to manual labor, such as crochet, crafts and 22horticulture

BE VERY HILLS Year: 2015 Project location: Tres Turon, Barcellona, Spain Project type: Architecture & Landscape Professor: Manuel Gausa Collaboration team: Fabio Buzzi, Fabio Berruti, Daria Podestà This project has the goal of upgrading a hilly area in​​ Barcelona, ​​ a strategic site close to the university of medicine, and some of the most important touristics areas, such as the Park Guell. The purpose of this project is enhancing the area creating a new center of attraction for tourists and residents, and the beginning of a path that reaches up to the bunkers, where everybody would be able to enjoy a scenic view, currently known and used only by locals. We want to create a new way to experience the city, based on the territory and its resources, by the exploitation of renewable energy. After some analysis, we decided to design a residential building, with some service placed on the lower floors, like a biblioteque, a restaurant and a marketplace which sales agricultural "km 0" products. In front of this building there is a second building, fully dedicated to sports activities such as an arena, a fitness center and a spa & wellness. The two structures are surrounded by a park, where you can play sports next to the sports building as well as enjoy urban gardens next to the residential building which has a green roof with private gardens for residents

Barcellona like an urban canyon Originally Barcellona showed itself as a network of parallel waterways which divided the nature of the territory. This lay of the land can be reinterpreted as a set of "urban canyon" generated by waterways, roads and buildings that mark the city in a grid pattern. Sometimes the natural course of the urban canyon is interrupted by a few green areas. An example is the Parc of Guinardó that links the center to the suburbs and is also bypassable by a subterranean tunnel. Goal of this design is to give importance to the park, connecting it with the surrounding urban canyon and creating a new center of attraction for locals and tourists

The area of Tres Turon

The main objective is to make a connection between two urban areas, using the routes that already exist and building new ones. An equipped promenade more than 2 km long starts from this connection. The final result is the upgrading and retraining of the entire area, including the overview area of ​​ the bunkers

GREEN BRIDGE Year: 2014 Project location:

The project is born from the need of making a new waterfront in ​​ the "Fiera del Mare" of Genoa. After many analysis about the relationship "sea-city" and about their connection, we noticed that currently there is not a connection between them, because of their different elevations and the many obstacles, such as the "elevated road" and the area dedicated to the port activities. The goal of this project is to establish a direct connection between the city and the sea, in order to create a waterfront accessible in all the differents levels that the city has in this area. For this reason we decided to design a "plate" that goes from the residential centre Carignano to the sea, passing above the "elevated road" and the exhibition hall forming a panoramic green roof and a promenade heading down to the sea. Below this "plate", which is defined by the presence of paths, green areas and some empty spaces, there are the exhibition pavilions, which receive natural light according to the empty spaces above. This generates a promenade on four levels from the city (elevated more than 27 meters) to the sea

The concept is generated by plotting the extension and the subsequent duplication of the main axes of the streets of Carignano district. From this strategy we designed a grid path where some of these spaces become green areas with vegetation and others light beams that illuminate the underlying exhibition halls and the sport centers. The entire area becomes a promenade on several levels that drives directly to the sea and the port, articulated by green areas and some suggestive water mirrors, important to ensure a good ventilation and cooling

The Dubai Art Centre project starts from the idea of creating a building inspired by the traditional as well as the modern Arab culture. From this intention develops the concept: the creation of five "optical cones" pointing towards the focal points of the "new" and the "old" Dubai, like the Suq and the Burj Khalifa. The Art Centre becomes therefore a landmark that combines and links traditional and modern elements of arabic architecture. In the center of this cones is located the Foyer, an open space, representing the fulcrum of the Art Centre, around which the entire building is built. To affirm the public function of the foyer, all the ground floors of the buildings are aimed at public activities and services (lobby, restaurant, bar, shop, meeting rooms, thus making the entire space of the floor a large foyer). Other peculiarity of the building is the progressive meltings of blocks in elevation, making the structure gradually a one whole building, with movement and dynamism. On the first floor are located all the areas dedicated to teaching, like painting room, and film editing, printing, reading, and artists' studios; while the second and last floor is taken up by the temporary and the permanent art center galleries. The key element of the project is the vertical distribution systems, wich is all around the perimeter of the building, together with the services and warehouses, forming a shell that covers the Art Centre nucleus

In oreder to illuminate the interior and to give motion to the structure are located the windows in correspondence of the vertical distribution system and in some areas dedicated to teaching. The whole structure is wrapped in a second skin of "masharabyia" steel, to create evocative lighting effects, but also to recall the traditional Arabic architecture

OVER THE LINE Year: 2013 Project location: Spotorno-Noli, Savona, Italy Project type: Waterfront Professor: Carlo Alberto Cozzani Collaboration Team: Chiara Castagnola, Martina Ivaldi, Mario Di Sibio

The purpose of the project is the restoration of the coast, the recovery of the morphological nature of the territory, the elimination of the degradation factors that have interested this part of the coast and the creation of new opportunities to give back the life to the area. The design choices start analyzing the dual nature of the site, by the courved level of the terraces close to the sea and the dynamic profile that the waves draw on the coast This process leads to the definition of a new space and a new topography that generate multi-level promenade, establishing a new relationship between the city and the sea. "Over the line" defines an organic whole of spaces and structures wich aim to revitalize this part of the coastline. The project extends along 1 km of coastline between Spotorno and Noli and affects an area of ​​ 52000 mq, also including two landfills to be reclaimed

Over the line

Currently the coast has an undergoing strong erosion of the beach, with the consequent loss of seaside appeal and touristic activity. The project restores two old piers that have been removed, which, diverting ocean currents, assure the stability of the beach. These two "brushes" will be integrated with a third, necessary for the development of maritime activities

Over the line

The main feature of the new promenade is the two communicating layers: a lower one on the same level of the beach and a higher one on the level of the main road. The elevation difference between the two layers is an extension of the nearby agricultural terraces. On the top of that, in some critical areas, green areas will be located with shrubs and trees that act as a filter between the street and the promenade

The most interesting building of the entire project is located in the center of the master plan, an organic building and partly hypogeal, inside the which is located a wellness & spa center, distinguished by the spaces that recall some real concrete caves. It is a dimly lit space characterized by sinuous and curvilinear trend

GREEN PATH Year: 2013 Project location: Prague, Czech Republic Project type: Residential Bridge Professor: Carlo Alberto Cozzani Collaboration Team: Chiara Castagnola, Martina Ivaldi, Mario Di Sibio

The project was developed for the international architectural competition "Prague: Bridge, building over the Vltava River 2012 by Arquitectum" for wich we obtained the honorable mention. The competition announcement required us to design an inhabited bridge linking two very congested areas of Prague. Our idea provided a bridge spaced out by two different types of towers: one with public functions and another with mixed pubblic and private functions. Due to the needed thickness to cover the large gap between the pylons the bridge is on two floors. The lower floor is intended for the fast traffic, while the upper one is a long green promenade that cuts the towers at the centre, determining the change of function, from public to private. Downstairs, along the central carriageway, is also located a parking lot that, as requested in the announcement, serves each house
