‘영국로열아카데미 대표작가전’은 영국 왕립미술원 회원(Royal Academician) 중 회화, 조각, 건축 3개 부문의 대표적인 작가 13명 50여 점의 작품을 통해 영국현대미술의 다 양함을 살펴보는 전시로 성남아트센터 미술관에서 열리고 있다.
‘이미지의 수사학’은 다변화되어가는 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 다양한 형태로 나타나 는 이미지의 존재 방식에 대해 체계적으로 고찰해봄으로써 한국미술의 발전적 방향을 제시해보고자 하는 취지로 마련되었다.
영국로열아카데미는 1768년 조지 3세(George-III)에 의해 설립된 영국 왕립미술원 (Royal Academy of Arts)으로 오늘날 영국현대미술이 세계 미술의 중심에 설 수 있었던 원동력이라 할 수 있다. 240여 년의 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 왕립미술원은 미술전시와 교 육을 통해 우수한 작가들을 배출해오고 있으며, 이 왕립미술원의 회원 자격을 가진다는 것은 영국 미술인으로서 최고의 영예라 할 수 있을 것이다. 이번 전시는 영국현대미술의 두 번째 전시로 지난해 열렸던 ‘영국현대회화’가 회화 위주의 전시였다면, 올해 진행되는 ‘영국로열아카데미 대표작가전’은 회화・조각・건 축 등 다양한 영국현대미술 장르를 경험해 볼 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다.
이번 전시에서는 현재 우리 미술계에서 독자적인 영역을 구축하며 한국미술을 선도 하고 있는 중진 작가 14인의 보는 작품에 집중하여, 이들이 작품을 통해 대중과 소통하 며 사회적 의미를 생산하도록 하는 시각적 수사학을 심도 있게 조명해 보고자 한다. 특히 이번 전시는 45세에서 60세에 이르는 작가들의 작품으로 구성함으로써 짧게는 20여 년에서 길게는 40여 년의 세월 동안 끊임없는 미적 실험과 변주의 과정을 거치며 자신만의 독자적인 표현방식에 안착한, 그러나 여전히 현재 진행형인 작품들이 선보인 다. 이에 따라 개념적 구분이나 주제별 구분보다는 각각의 작가에게 초점을 맞추어 현 재 이들의 행보를 가늠해볼 수 있는 대표작들을 선별하여 전시를 구성하였다.

따라서 본 전시는 우리 미술계에서 중추적 역할을 하고 있는 중진 작가들의 작품을 심도 있게 고찰해봄으로써 한국현대미술의 현황 및 향후 발전 가능성을 조망해 볼 수 있는 기회의 마련이라는 점에서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
The Royal Academicians' Exhibition that is held by the Seongnam Arts Center will show the diverseness of British contemporary art through 50 works of the 13 most representative artists of the Royal Academy of Arts.
‘Rhetoric of the Images' intends to suggest a direction in which Korean art should develop through a systematic examination of the ways of images' existence in various forms in the context of diversifying contemporary art.
The British Royal Academy is a Royal Academy of Arts that was established by George-III in 1786 and has been the driving force that has allowed British contemporary art to be the center of global art today. The Royal Academy of Arts, with its long-standing history of 240years, has cultivated outstanding artists through exhibitions and training. It is considered one of the highest honors for a British artists to be qualified for membership. This is the second exhibition of British contemporary art. While last year's ‘Exhibition of British Contemporary Paintings’ focused on paintings, ‘The Royal Academician's Exhibition’ will give you a chance to experience various forms of British contemporary art, such as paintings, sculpture, and architect.
This exhibition sheds light on the visual rhetoric that lets the fourteen prominent Korean artists who have established their own territories in the current art world to communicate with the public and produce a social meaning. Especially, this exhibition is limited to artworks with figurative images that are recognizable at a first glance. It is focused on presenting what the fourteen artists aim to express through their artworks and how they communicate. Therefore, this exhibition is significant in evaluating the leading artists who play a pivotal role in our art world in depth to provide a chance to estimate the present condition of Korean contemporary art and its development in the future.
