“The above poem evokes the beautiful imagery of the author walking through a bamboo forest, the air displaced by her moving body setting the more delicate bamboo stalks around her in motion. In turn, these stalks change the shadows cast upon the ground.”

Sensitile was born from attempts to translate this poetic idea into the physical realm and make it available to experience.

I repeat my vow in unchanging colors of the ageless bamboo which still creates ten thousand generations of shadows

Sensitile® is an internationally-recognized designer and manufacturer of inspiring and sustainable materials and solutions for a wide range of architectural and design applications. Material design, prototyping, manufacturing, detailing, fabrication, packaging and shipping, all occur exclusively from our only location in Michigan, USA.

Raw Materials

Our hand-crafted materials are not simply stamped from stock but start from raw materials. Each has a unique story as it goes through the iterative, detailed process of production.

Due to the specialized nature of Sensitile’s® materials, variations in color, shade, flow, grain, tonality, crazing, veining, texture, spatial dimensions”, thickness and slight bubbling are inherent features that enrich the character and visual aesthetic of the material.

We use all our excess concrete mix to create planters and platters. This diverts waste from the landfill. No two are alike and there is no saying which color will emerge from our molds! Results can be variegated.

Our commitment to sustainability fuels our tireless efforts to integrate more environmentally and socially responsible practices into both our products and our work culture. We believe that product transparency and disclosure serve to not only optimize our products and process but can ultimately improve the environment and quality of life for us all. All our product lines have received third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). Health Product Declarations (HPD) are also available. Sensitile’s materials carry the Clean Air GOLD Certification from Intertek, confirming that they are safe for the indoor environment and do not have deleterious effects on air quality, human health, productivity, and the environment.

Our Challenges

Counterfeit, low-quality goods claiming to be Sensitile® products are being produced in China. These copycat manufacturers victimize the unsuspecting by also copying our signature brand elements and trade-dress, including but not limited to stationary, font style and website design to appear as legitimate Sensitile® manufacturing or distribution facilities.

Some global brands are unable to control their own procurement practices tightly enough to prevent these aggressive manufacturers from making inroads. The implications of such rampant forgery and use of poor quality materials for prestigious brand designs has far-reaching effects on manufacturers like us who have invested significant time and resources into developing our Sensitile® materials to be of the premium quality expected by our customers.

We rely heavily on the awareness in the architecture and design community of the need to protect original design as it relates to materials in addition to the other aspects of design.
