In keeping with the landscaping traditions of 18TH century English country gardens, the park was originally planned as an aesthetic enhancement for the Old Public OďŹƒces or Attara Kacheri (presently called the Karnataka High Court). This garden style was inuenced by the work of European watercolour artists who painted an idealized representation of nature; buildings were framed with a view of undulating lawns and a cluster of trees near water bodies with ducks. Structures like bridges and pavilions were also placed as punctuations. The Department of Horticulture continues to beautify the park with owering trees, ferns, topiaries, bamboo and shrubs.The ďŹ rst gate naming the park was added here on 19.01.2018. The owering park in summer brings to mind the vibrant watercolour paintings that can be seen in the Venkatappa Art Gallery nearby.

Bengaluru’s popular public park was initially called Meade’s Park after the British Commissioner General Sir Richard John Meade and re-named in honour of Lt. General Sir Mark Cubbon who succeeded him. It was initially spread over 100 acres and designed by Lt. Col. Sir Richard Hieram Sankey, Chief Engineer of Mysore. It is now known as the Sri. Chamarajendra Park (order dated 26th July, 1948). It stands out from public parks across India due to its seamless integration with the city. Within and around its current boundary are motorable roads, walking pathways, over 6000 trees, indigenous flowering species, tree avenues, rock clusters, water bodies and structures of historical significance.
