72 Years Old

Alice Walker FEBRUARY 9, 1944

Perhaps best known for her novel, “The Color Purple,” Alice Walker was born to sharecroppers in Georgia. An eye injury from a BB gun pellet made her self-conscious and she found solace in reading and writing poetry, according to biography.com. She attended segregated schools and graduated from her high school as the valedictorian of her class. With the help of a scholarship, she went to college and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1965 — the same year she published her first short story. “The Color Purple” her third novel, won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for Fiction in 1983.
