Each year, 175,000 older adults, ages 65 and above, are seen in emergency departments due to adverse drug reactions, and approximately 106,000 seniors die from prescription drug problems. Dr. Edward Schneider will explain the body of research in polypharmacy and clinical studies that are currently studying its impact among older adults. His team of researchers at USC has demonstrated that it is possible to wean patients off anti-hypertensive medications to reduce their risk of falls and other side effects. They are currently exploring the effects of reducing the use of other common medications taken by older persons. This session will focus on strategies to improve quality of life by reducing prescription drug usage among senior living residents.
