Welcome to SeniorLife, Rio Grande Valley! Publisher’s Note, Hello from Kristi Welcome to Senior Life, Rio Grande Valley! We hope you enjoy this monthly magazine as much as we do! We are having so much fun documenting what happens across the Rio Grande Valley during the winter months. I’d also like to take a moment and say a big THANK YOU to all of you who commented on last month’s issue, and hope that you see some of those comments and suggestions reflected in the pages that follow. Here in South Texas, we want you here - not only because you spend your money, but you spend your time and talents with us as well. And on behalf of the entire Rio Grande Valley I would like to say thank you! The purpose of this magazine is not only to show you all that the Rio Grande Valley has to offer, in and out of your communities - but also a way of spreading positive messages. So please! Let us know if there is something exciting happening in your community that you would like to share with others. Whether you’ve got the best Big Band Jam, Hamburger Dinner, Pancakes or Square Dancers - or if you contribute to local food banks, church groups or people in need - we want to know about it! We’re thrilled that you decided to call the Rio Grande Valley your home away from home and hope you encourage your friends to come and give our South Texas hospitality a try. Hope to see you all real soon! Kristi PS Please let us know about events and happenings that you’d like to see us at! You can email me at or call me direct at 956-687-5115. Notes on Senior Health Years ago a close friend started to complain that her toes frequently felt numb. She asked if I thought there could be something going on. I started asking questions beating around the bush while zeroing in on the idea that maybe she needed to have herself checked for diabetes. She either had not considered this as a possibility or was playing the most popular healthcare game - denial. Indeed the diagnosis was Type II Diabetes, the one we used to call “adult onset” diabetes. In her case it turned out that she probably had a genetic predisposition because her father had also had diabetes. Genetics is not the whole story on why some of us have this “onset”. Many of us invite it with our life styles of good food and easy living. The point I am trying to make in starting with the numbness (in medical terms, neuropathy), is that this is a diabetic manifestation that usually is present before the diabetes is actually diagnosed. Researchers state that probably 2 of every 5 diabetics, 40%, have this complication. So if you begin to notice this symptom it is time to get checked. Early diagnosis and control, possibly with life style changes only, can truly change the course of your life as well as the course of the disease. Let’s all do our part to stay healthy and active so we can enjoy what the Valley has to offer.
