WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR
On behalf of my colleagues on Council and the citizens of Kamloops, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the second annual Seniors Symposium, “Age Friendly Cities and Rural Communities, the Next Steps”. The symposium will be hosted by Oncore Central Services and the City. Kamloops is an age-friendly city, and we pride ourselves on providing activities and support for citizens of every age. The City of Kamloops is proud to be hosting this year’s symposium. The agenda is full of information sessions that have been designed specifically for seniors, caregivers, family members, and service providers. Programs include Home Health Care Information about Access and Options, Best Practices, Housing for Seniors - Information on Publicly-funded Assisted Living and Residential Care, How to Excel at Active Aging, Innovations in Chronic Care Management, and a presentation from the Alzheimer Society. The symposium offers the unique opportunity to meet our community’s support team if you ever need to call on them as resources. I extend my best wishes for a successful conference. Yours truly,
Peter Milobar Mayor

MESSAGE FROM ANN McCARTHY Oncore Central Services and the City of Kamloops are committed to making Kamloops an age-friendly community with an inclusive and accessible environment that encourages active and healthy living. At the 2nd Annual Kamloops Seniors Symposium, we will address a variety of topics that will help make Kamloops a more age-friendly city, and help to keep you safe, healthy and happy.
I would also like to recognize the amazing work of the army of volunteers who work for Oncore, and who are working today to make this event such a success. Our volunteers are people who have worked silently behind the scenes, day after day, year after year, and who give their time and talents with no expectation of return. You are an inspiration and a blessing, and I thank you all for everything you do.
This symposium recognizes the work in Kamloops that is making life better for seniors and their families. This event would not be possible without the support of the City of Kamloops, Interior Health Home Health Care Team, Kamloops Seniors Village, and a variety of other service providers.
Thank you also, to the wonderful team at Oncore, and the Symposium Planning Committee for sharing your skills, expertise, time, and hard work to make sure this event took place. We are proud to be part of the service provider group in Kamloops who are working to improve the lives of seniors.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: DAVID PARADISO David Paradiso was appointed Deputy Ombudsperson for the Province of British Columbia in August, 2014. Mr. Paradiso’s appointment brought British Columbia 25 years of experience strengthening the oversight and investigation of public sector agencies. Starting in the Ontario Ombudsman’s office, Mr. Paradiso provided legal services and worked as an investigator, dealing with complaints about a variety of provincial programs including workers’ compensation, social benefits, corrections, family responsibility, the Public Guardian and Trustee, the Human Rights Commission and psychiatric services. Mr. Paradiso later assisted in the establishment of the Ombudsman for Canada Post, before moving to the RCMP Public Complaint Commission, and later to the Correctional Investigator of Canada where he served as Director of Investigations responding to complaints from offenders serving sentences in federal penitentiaries. Mr. Paradiso then joined a statutory administrative tribunal, the RCMP External Review Committee, as the Executive Director and Senior Counsel, before taking over as interim Chair, reviewing employment grievances and disciplinary decisions affecting RCMP members.
in Victoria with his wife and four daughters. He has a law degree from Western University in London, Ontario and is a member of the Ontario Bar. The Second Annual Senior’s Symposium Planning Committee is very pleased to welcome Mr. Paradiso to Kamloops, and we look forward to hearing him speak about the advances made in seniors care since the office of the Ombudsperson of BC published THE BEST OF CARE: GETTING IT RIGHT FOR SENIORS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA (Part 2) in February 2012. The Ombudsperson is the voice for fairness in our province, and this report is dedicated to seniors in British Columbia who require care and support, and their families and friends. It is also dedicated to the hardworking people who provide care to seniors in British Columbia. As seniors, caregivers, families and friends gather today at our Symposium, we look forward to a future where we can all work together to improve the lives of seniors in British Columbia.
Having recently moved from Ontario, Mr. Paradiso is very happy to be living

WHY YOU SHOULD BE HERE TODAY Welcome, and thank you for taking part in our 2nd Annual Kamloops Seniors Symposium. If you participated last year, you gave us strong feedback. You wanted to know more about housing options for seniors. We recognize that your home is extremely important to you. Your home is your strength, your memories, and your place of refuge. It is your safety and your joy. As you age, all of these factors become so much more important, especially if you have to say goodbye to a family home for financial reasons, or because of declining health. We want you to know all of your options as you age. So we have brought the people to you that you should be talking to. They are here to answer your questions. We want you and your family members to have all the information you need to make informed choices. Information about access and options in Home Health Care is another reason you should be here. Last year you voiced your opinions about lack of information
pertaining to Home Health Care. You need to know what is available to you, and what you should expect when you are dealing with health issues. We have invited the whole team from Home Health Care in Kamloops. They are here to answer your questions. We want you and your family members to have all the information you need to make informed choices. Are you concerned about Alzheimers? That’s why you should be here today. We have the latest and most up to date information about an issue that could affect every family in our community. We want you and your family members to have all the information you need to make informed choices. Informed choices………… if you don’t know what to do, or where to turn, it’s because you don’t have the right information. At Oncore Central Services, our job is to keep you informed. You should be here today. Your job is to help us help you!
