VICOM-124 Joomla! Installation The exercise will have you installing Joomla! within your directory on the graph-art.matc.edu web server. This will just be a practice site and is not intended to be the starting point for your final project. Based on the pre-requisite for this class, I assume that you have experience working with Dreamweaver and uploading files to the graph-art.matc.edu web server. Because different students have different types of computers and versions of operating systems, there is no way for me to control installations of Joomla! on your local computers, as explained in the Quick Start Guide. You are welcome to try this, but I cannot offer any assistance. Furthermore, you will need to get a joomla site live on a web server in order for me to view it anyway. Therefore, I will provide instructions for installing Joomla! of the graph-art.matc.edu web server. Some of the steps may vary if you are using a different web hosting company. You can skip to page 10 of the Quick Start Guide and proceed with the steps regarding Sections, Categories, and Articles. The installation process works just fine whether you are working on a MAC or a PC - I have tested both on the graph-art.matc.edu server. 1. Create a folder on your computer to serve as your local root folder for this class, if one does not already exist - I usually call mine wwwroot - inside of that, create a vicom124 folder: /wwwroot/vicom124 2. Set up Dreamweaver or FileZilla to connect to the graph-art.matc.edu student web server (see the Resources link in Blackboard for more information) 3. Refer to the bottom of page 72 in your book, the section on setting up Joomla! 4. Visit www.Joomla.org 5. Click one of the Download Joomla! links 6. Click the ZIP link next to the English (UK) 1.5.15 Full Package line to download the file and save it to your computer 7. Extract (unarchive if on a Mac) the files from the Joomla_1.5.15-Stable-Full_Package.zip file 8. Rename the Joomla_1.5.15-Stable-Full_Package folder that was created when you extracted the files to joomla and move this joomla folder to your /wwwroot/vicom124 folder on your computer: /wwwroot/vicom124/Joomla 9. Upload the new joomla folder from your computer to your vicom124 directory (folder) on the graph-art.matc.edu web server - note that this will take some time (potentially 10-15 minutes or more depending on your connection speed) due to the amount of files 10. I have already created a MySQL database for each student, as explained in step 3 on page 72

11. Navigate to your Joomla folder, but it won't be http://localhost/joomla/ as shown in step 4 on page 72, rather it will be: http://graph-art.matc.edu/username/vicom124/joomla - if you have follow the directions properly (remember to substitute your actual username instead of the word username) 12. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen

13. When you get to the Pre-installation check screen, you should only see one red warning (next to the Display Errors line) - that is okay because of the server settings on the graphart.matc.edu web server

16. When you get to the Main Configuration screen: • Site name: give your site a site name (I used Jonathan's VICOM-124 Demo) • Your E-mail: use your studentid@gmatc.matc.edu email address • Admin Password: whatever you'd like • You have the option to Install Sample Data - if you wish to (I did), you must actually click the Install Sample Data button on the middle of the page before clicking Next

18. You can now proceed to graph-art.matc.edu/username/vicom124/joomla/administrator to manage your new Joomla! site (note, Joomla! creates the admin username as admin) or graph-art.matc.edu/username/vicom124/joomla to view it as a visitor would see it

If you receive an error that says "No configuration file found and no installation code available. Exiting..." you may need to follow a few additional steps (some in the classroom section did, some did not):

1. Rename the configuration.php-dist file to configuration.php (remove -dist) 2. Open configuration.php in code view in Dreamweaver (or another text editor) 3. Change the php code in lines 44-47 as follows: o var $host = ' graph-art.matc.edu'; o var $user = ' USERNAME'; o var $password = ' studentID'; o var $db = ' username'; o Note: USERNAME for the $user should be in UPPERCASE! 4. Save the configuration.php file with your changes 5. Upload the configuration.php file back to your /username/wwwroot/vicom124/joomla directory on the graph-art.matc.edu web server 6. Proceed with step 17 above
