This Week’s Feature Story

Reggae Stars Dominate Festival Lineups Priest's most successful effort, the album titled Bonifid e included the smash hit Close to You which sent him straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B charts. Continuing to blend reggae roots with R&B and soul, Maxi Priest has recorded ten albums to date and performs worldwide. His international success has earned him the ability to record with other stars including Roberta Flack, Shaggy, and Caribbean star Shurwayne Winchester, who will play Carrot Bay on Saturday, August 8, opening for Tyrese. Road Town will see the likes of Ky-Mani Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and brother to stars Ziggy, Stephen and Damien, as well as Tarrus Riley, who’s hit She’s Royal has enjoyed radio airplay for much of the last year. International Reggae Night will be tomorrow, Friday, July 31 at Festival Grounds, with Destra and Duane Stephenson opening. With his 2008 hit Push Ya Bumper, Machel Montano will undoubtedly keep the crowd in East End dancing on Tuesday, August 4, with other stellar performances by BVI home grown favorites Jamesy P and Ritical. — Melissa Wood ley

Capping off two weeks of exciting Festival music performances, acclaimed R&B and reggae sensation Maxi Priest will grace the stage in Carrot Bay on Friday, August 7. Born to Jamaican parents living in London, Maxi Priest's musical influences are as varied as the cultural center he was raised in. Nuances of pop, gospel, and most notably, R&B, pepper the reggae songs that sent him to the top of the charts in the UK, US and Caribbean. Priest even holds the unique distinction of having the first UK reggae hit to reach the number one spot in Jamaica. Often labeled as a singer of "lovers rock," Maxi Priest made a name for himself by Some Guys Have All the Luck .

Coney Island – a Rite of Passage the Cyclone. That was, until I was in college and my date persuaded me to go on. The experience was just as I had expected. Terrifying! I still don’t understand the adrenalin rush and suicidal tendency that goes with today’s rides – strapping oneself into an open car and zooming at sonic speed along a narrow track . . . in the dark. By contrast, the Coney Island rides at Festival Village are a tame affair. They are generally meant for small children and it is what my kids were weaned on. We went most years, and when they were very young, I would accompany them. The rides were not scary, but often they would spin. And fast. This never sat well with the hot dog I had inevitably eaten right before I got on. The kids loved it though, the more spinning, the better. As they got older, they graduated to bumper cars. You had to be a certain height to operate one, so once again, I would ride with them. Bumper Cars are neither scary nor do they spin, which is a plus. But prepubescent boys, setting the groundwork for later life, are maniacs behind a wheel and whiplash was always a danger. Now my kids are too big for Coney Island, but someday I expect I’ll accompany another generation there – and I’ll enjoy watching my sons spin out of control on the Flying Saucer with their own children. It’s a rite of passage.

Coney Island is a mainstay of August Festival. A conglomerate of rides that look as if they’ve been subjected to one too many years of salt air, and neglect, are nonetheless an essential part of BVI childhood. The real Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York is also a bit seedy and rundown, but it still hangs onto life in an era where Disney World type rides of virtual reality and technical prowess prevail. When I was growing up in New Jersey, my family took me each summer to Palisades Park, an amusement park immortalized in the 1960s song of the same name. It was large, had innumerable rides, both scary and placid, and it was the highlight of my summer. For years I managed to avoid the roller coaster, known aptly as

Coraline In the same vein as fairytales from the Brothers Grimm, the stop-motion animated tale Coraline will instill a valuable lesson in children, by scaring them half to death. The dark movie is a cautionary tale that things aren’t always what they seem, and that sometimes, things really are too good to be true. Coraline and her parents move into a new home and Coraline quickly becomes bored while her parents are immersed in work. To placate the rambunctious Coraline, her mother gives her an assortment of keys to see if any unlock a mysteriously tiny door, but unfortunately she finds nothing but a brick wall once the lock is open. But later that night, she was woken from sleep by a mouse, who leads her through the house to the tiny door. This time when she opens it, a magical tunnel appears and of course, curious Coraline crawls through. At the other end, she finds a replica of her new home, except everything is, in some way, better. The home is brighter, more cheerful, and her parents seems like perfected versions of their actual selves – centered solely on Coraline – except for one small detail, they have black buttons where their eyes should be. Coraline truly enjoys her new home, where her “Other Mother” spends all day cooking a wonderful dinner, her “Other Father” has time to entertain her with the piano, and the backyard garden looks just like her’s when seen from above. But then she goes to bed that night and wakes up the following morning in her real home, with her distant parents and nothing to do. She returns to the other world, and eventually Other Mother forces her to choose between homes, and Coraline’s world suddenly turns upside down. Embodying the childhood warning “Be careful what you wish for,” Coraline is a film better suited for older children, who can handle a bit of a fright, and is perfectly suited for the child in every adult, as well.

Culture Abounds at August Festival Organizers insist that this year’s August Monday parade will be better than ever, and are even assuring that it will start on time! Approximately 60 troupes are expected to march the parade route down Waterfront Drive. Among those participating are BVI residents from a host of countries including the USVI, St. Kitts & Nevis, Guyana, and the Philippines. On August 6, the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta will open with a torch light procession from Lower Carrot Bay at 7:30 with fungi music. Everyone is also encouraged to check out plantation ruins located just across the road from the Fiesta Grounds. On Friday, August 7, donkey races, games for children, and tug of war will wrap up the cultural events for Festival 2009. By Melissa Wood ley

A favorite Festival feature of many, this year’s Food Fair will be held tomorrow, Friday, August 31, at Noel Lloyd Park. Aside from being an ideal place to pick up a hearty lunch, the Fair showcases some of the best parts of the BVI culture aside from food – craft making and musical performances also play a role in creating a fun, yet educational, atmosphere in the park. Nearly everything you could wish to eat will be found at the Food Fair, including main dishes of chicken, pork and fish, sweet deserts like cakes and tarts, and fresh, locally grown produce. As for drink, your possibilities are endless, with passionfruit, mango, tamarind, and sour sop juices (to name just a few) and home-brewed drinks like ginger beer, sorrel, maubi, made from recipes that are often closely-guarded family secrets. On Sunday, the traditional Sunrise Service at the Administration Building, and following Freedom March and Emancipation Service at the Sunday Morning Well will be made extra special on this landmark 175th anniversary year. Love, Peace, Unity & Community Show performances by IMO and Ritical. The music will be interspersed with poetry and motivational speeches by politicians and other community leaders, and Cane Garden Bay’s most famous musician, Quito Rhymer, will have a special segment on stage. Instead of a traditional performance, Quito will assume the role of storyteller, mixing wisdom and music in a must-see feature of the show. As an added special, in honor of the world’s number one pop star, the BVI artists will collaborate on a tribute to Michael Jackson. Capital Productions has identified the Family Support Network as the beneficiary of this event, which has an entry fee of just $7 for adults and $5 for children.
