FIRST WORDS

Dear Members AN EXCITING NEW START Thank you for your strong show of support at the recent Annual General Meeting in July. I would like to thank the past Management Committee and sub-committee members for their contributions and welcome the new committees for 2018-2019. The Management Committee for this term remains largely unchanged, and we welcome the return of Phua Hua Seng as our Club Captain to ensure continuity for our upgrading projects. Moving forward, major changes are expected to take place on several fronts within the next year, which

DIGITAL REVOLUTION We started digitising aspects of the Club’s operations a few years ago, from do-it-yourself update of golf scorecards to more efficient feedback management systems. In the last term, we have also implemented cashless payment. Moving forward, members can expect even greater convenience in the form of self-ordering at our F&B outlets, hassle-free golf registration and self-printing of course tickets, amongst others.

TOWARDS SERVICE EXCELLENCE

On 26 May, I had dinner with my family at Terrace and we were served by LO KAR XIONG. The service staff and food are excellent. We are happy with the service shown by the staff, especially by MUGU. Thank you for accommodating!

We had forgotten to inform Kar Xiong that my son wanted extra cheese with his order but were pleasantly surprised when the food was served. He remembered my son’s order from a previous occasion and had brought along the extra cheese without prompting! He had shown initiative and was pleasant throughout. When we complimented him, he simply smiled and said he was just doing his job – And it’s a job truly well done indeed! Keep it up Kar Xiong! NEW FACE

We are 5-Star Ranked!

Suresh S/O S Vengadasan Executive, Security Suresh was previously from the police force, having worked in the Special Operations Command, K-9 unit for 14 years. He never realised that he had a special bond with dogs until he handled and trained them over the years. Although he does not currently own a dog, he certainly does not rule out adopting one in the future! Taking the leap to the security sector was the next step for Suresh, who has since worked at various clubs and resorts before moving to Seletar Country Club. He loves the outdoors and will bring his children to parks or play football and cycle with friends whenever he has the free time.

We strive to make your comfort our responsibility – and this includes maintaining hygiene standards at the highest level. Recently, we were awarded the Certificate of Accreditation from The Restroom Association (Singapore) for having met the 5-star standard of a premium restroom that is also equipped with user friendly and eco-friendly facilities. We are proud of this achievement and we will definitely continue to keep up the good work!

Happy Retirement!

Suresh lives by this motto, “Life has no remote, so get up and change it yourself!”

We thank our Finance & Membership Manager, Henry Lye, for his years of dedicated service to the club and wish him all the very best as he enjoys his golden years. You’ll be missed, Henry! Henry will be replaced by Ms Goh Yong Cheng who will be joining the Club on 1 September.

Chairman Cheah Kim Teck addressing members

30th Annual General Meeting The Club held its 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 19 July to an overwhelming turnout of more than 400 members. Chairman Cheah Kim Teck brought the meeting to order at 6.30pm by thanking members for showing their support.

Candid moments during registration

In his address, Chairman updated members on the progress of the Club’s renovation project and explained the work that went on behind the scenes of the land lease renewal. Chairman then took a moment to thank the General Manager and his team for their efforts in bringing the renewal fee down, and Vice-Chairman and his team for ensuring the golf course renovation project is on schedule for closure on 1 October. Members can look forward to a new course in about 18 months, followed by a refreshing new Terrace, Tavern and Seletar Room. Citing the Seletar Spirit which encapsulates the Club’s friendly environment, Chairman shared how the Club is now at a crossroad of several changes. The renovation of the golf course and F&B facilities will undoubtedly lead towards improved facilities for members. However, on the preservation of the Club’s friendly culture, Chairman posed two questions for members moving forward: “What kind of club would you want for the future?” and “Who would we like to lead the Club?” Chairman updated members on the upcoming Constitutional change as required by our founding member Sport SG, which is to take effect from the AGM of 2019. Chairman further explained that with this, the term of the incoming committees will only be for a period of one year till the next AGM and elections. CLUB NEWS Taking a closer look at the figures

Moving on, Chairman touched on several important matters for members to think about which includes rebuilding the Club’s future financial health post renewal expenses, updating the Club’s payment and other systems in line with advancing technological conveniences and rethinking certain facilities such as the Jackpot Room, which suffered severely due to changes in governmental regulations. Finally, as Chairman announced his key management committee line-up for the next year, he paid tribute to the contribution and work of Captain Ismail Taha, to appreciative applause from members. The meeting then proceeded with the elections for the position of the Vice-Captain and four Ordinary Management Committee Members taking centre stage. We would like to thank members for their understanding and support in ensuring that the manual voting which ensued was done in as much order as possible, and congratulate our elected Vice-Captain and MC members who have returned for the next term. Going Ahead with Zoysia Zeon Turf On 27 April, members of the Golf Course Re-Design Project Committee made a trip to Jakarta. They were there to evaluate the suitability of the Zoysia Zeon turf to be planted on our new course. They also did a site inspection on the development method and its overall benefits. The turf was to be used for wall-to-wall planting, meaning that the same turf will be planted on the tees, fairways, roughs, shade areas and bunker faces. After the inspection, it was found that there will be very minimal use of pesticides and fungicides on the turf throughout the one year that it will be planted. This will lead to huge savings on fertilisers as there is only a need to use them once every three months. After taking into account the benefits of the Zoysia Zeon Turf, the team would be considering it for our new golf course. Now you can look forward to good quality turf conditions upon the completion of our golf course renovation works!

Seletar Tops Premier Division All raring to go!

Following a series of resounding wins in all the round-robin match plays, we are proud that Team Seletar came out as first runner-up and overall champion of the Premier Division in the grueling five-month long SGA Inter-Club League. Congratulations Team Seletar! In the final knockout round held at Sentosa Golf Club on 8 July, Team Seletar gave their all in defending our title championship against National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC) and emerged as the First Runner-up. All was not lost however as our Premier Division players packed extra power and emerged victorious at the end of the season, bagging home the Overall Champion title for the Premier Division. After an intensive string of competitions between twelve golf clubs, the SGA Inter-Club League drew to a close on a bittersweet note.

Regardless of team, the golfers cheer each other on.

Team Captain Andy Pang shared his appreciation for Team Seletar’s hard work and the Club’s support in their training, “I’m grateful to all the players for their teamwork, commitment and sacrifices made. They had to take time away from their families and personal commitments to train and build rapport with one another in order to prepare for the tournament.” Well done Seletarians and congratulations once again Team Seletar!

cheers to 30 Years of Wong Kan Seng Trophy The Wong Kan Seng Trophy celebrated its 30-year milestone on the bright Sunday morning of 5 August 2018. Since the first tournament held on 28 February 1988 to commemorate the opening of our new clubhouse at Seletar Airbase, the annual event has provided opportunities for golfers from Seletar Country Club and Sport Singapore to bond and engage in some friendly competition. The game ended early due to the weather, but that did not dampen the spirit of our golfers who continued to enjoy one another’s company over a sumptuous lunch at the Eagle’s View. Mr Wong Kan Seng shared, “I always look forward to the annual golf game as it gives me great pleasure to meet old friends and make new ones. Every time I step into the Club, it brings back fond memories to the days when the Seletar Country Club was at the old Seletar Air Base. I thank the Seletar Country Club management committee and staff for tirelessly organising the event for the last 30 years.” Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the game

Best of Seletar Water Sports Centre

Through The Years

Seletar Water Sports Centre has come a long way since it first opened its doors as the Seletar Sailing Centre in 2004. Offering activities such as sailing, kayaking, and dinghy rowing, the Water Sports Centre made Seletar Country Club unique amongst clubs in Singapore by being the only 18-hole golf club with water sports facilities. Surrounded by rolling acres of lush greenery and the serenity of the reservoir, golfers were often treated to thrilling views of paddlers in action while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the landscape.

11

Families bonded over the myriad of activities and festive celebrations held, from prawning and fishing to lantern walks and BBQ dinners, making the centre a one-stop haven for members and the general public alike. The Water Sports Centre also contributed to the sports education of student groups such as the Seletar Lapwing Sea Scouts Troop and underprivileged youths under the Seletar Voyagers Kayaking Programme, amongst others. As we close the chapter on the iconic Seletar Water Sports Centre, here is a throwback of some of the momentous milestones and memories over the years.

CLOSING WITH A

BIG BANG After 13 years of fond memories steeped in the club’s history, our iconic Seletar Water Sports Centre ceased operations in June 2018 as we returned the space to NParks for Singapore’s 150km round-island green corridor. To bid adieu to an important part of our heritage, a big bang celebration was held on 7 July 2018. The participants enjoyed free sailing and kayaking sessions, and other activities such as face painting, inflatable bouncy castle, and laser tag.

11

In the evening, a lowering of the sail ceremony was held to mark the official closing of the centre. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to our caretaker of the centre, Ramlee, as well as longstanding partners like SplashAxis, Explora Pte Ltd, and the Seletar Lapwing Sea Scouts Troop to thank them for their partnership and support. Thanks for all the cherished memories, and we look forward to creating new ones with all our members!

Seletar Got Talent

They came, they sang and they conquered… Who would have thought that we have so much talent amongst us! On 30 June 2018, a record of 27 participants competed in our very first 'Seletar Got Talent' singing competition. The singers performed in front of our celebrity judge panel which included Chen Tian Wen, Darren Lim and Francis Yap, who had a very difficult task that night. Results were very close, particularly amongst the top three. Andy Choo eventually emerged as the champion with his soulful rendition of ‘Lady’ that blew the audience away. We thank all singers for their stunning performances and the incredibly supportive audience. We can’t wait for the next round of Seletar Got Talent in 2019!

Expedition

at Sea

Led by TV celebrity, Darren Lim, some of our members went for a short getaway and spent some time bonding onboard Gracefully - a 40ft Lagoon sailing catamaran yacht on 17 July. Just look at all the excited faces before they set off! The recommended itinerary included a 90-minute tour around the Southern Islands (Sisters’ Island, St John’s Island & Kusu Island) before anchoring at Lazarus Island for some swimming, kayaking, sun-tanning and more. Suitable for groups of up to 18 guests, the upper deck of Gracefully provides a spacious lounging space to enjoy the breathtaking views of Singapore’s skyline and Southern Islands while they sailed. Another favourite spot was the front deck net where one is free to sit or lie to soak up the sun or savour the cool, refreshing breeze! Our members had an absolute blast during the 4-hour charter and can’t wait for the next time!
