FIRST WORDS

Dear Members In January this year, we had a Town Hall meeting to gather members’ feedback on the proposed changes to the Constitution. Thanks to all who came to the Town Hall meeting; we were heartened by your enthusiasm and efforts taken to study the Constitution. It was a healthy engagement and some of your input have been incorporated in the revised Constitution which was circulated with the Notice of Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM). We look forward to receiving your mandate in the coming EOGM to adopt the new Constitution, so that our Club can transit to a fully-elected Management Committee model come this July 2019 Annual General Meeting.

lending your support to the Club. Whether it be golf, the recreational facilities or the dining outlets – your continued patronage is valued and will keep the Club’s vibrancy alive. Coming up, we have fun workshops such as easter egg candle making and soap making, as well as ongoing food promotions catered for you to entertain your family and friends. Sports programmes like swimming, pool kayaking and tennis lessons are also available. Several overseas golf trips are also in the pipeline, such as the Ladies’ trip to Japan in May and an Inter-club friendly to Perth in June. Our Reading Room also got a refreshed look in January and is now ready to welcome members with cosy new furniture and draperies.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

NEW FISCAL YEAR As we wrap up the accounts for FY2018/2019 this March, we are pleased to report that full payment for the land lease renewal has been made. Hence our lease has now been officially extended to 2040. Moving forward, as we navigate the golf course renovation till Q1 of next year and expect reduced revenue for this period, we urge members to continue

The Management Committee is grateful for your support and we are committed to upholding members’ interests in all our decisions. We look forward to your continuous support.

A quiet space away from the hustle & bustle of city life

Our reading room underwent a facelift in January! Members can now enjoy an even more comfortable space to read and work in cool comfort. The armchairs and sofas were replaced with new ones and the existing tables re-varnished. The seating capacity was also increased, with more powerpoints to allow members to work on their laptops and electronic devices. In the day, the new day curtains allowed for natural light to shine through, providing a meditative space to read, work, or simply enjoy a quiet moment in air-conditioned comfort. When the sun sets, the warm lighting and cushy sofa is a cosy haven to relax and unwind.

SELETAR BUZZ 5

To gather members’ feedback and thoughts on the Amended Constitution, a Town Hall was convened on 9 January. About 160 members attended, and it was heartening to see the enthusiasm they showed in coming forth with their feedback and suggestions. In line with our Founding Member, Sport Singapore’s directive for our Club to operate on a fully memberselected model, a total of nine Management Committee positions (i.e. Chairman, ViceChairman, Honorary Secretary, Treasurer, Captain & 4 Management Committee members) will be elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July. We thank everyone once again for your support and look forward to seeing everyone at the EOGM to vote on the Amended Constitution.

FESTIVE CELEBRATION

Sharing festive cheer with cancer patients

In December last year, the Saturday Group of golfers raised $1,650 to sponsor 20 hospice patients from Singapore Cancer Society for a night of fine dining at Dignity Kitchen, a social enterprise that hires people with disabilities and the socially disadvantaged. It was indeed a meaningful collaboration for everyone involved!

A BIG THANK Y U TO OUR MEMBERS Thanks to your generosity, all the wishes have been adopted. FESTIVE CELEBRATION

A Magical Christmas at Seletar

Candies, presents, lightsticks, and all things bright and colourful! The season of joy truly came alive at Seletar on 22 December 2018 as the little ones brightened up the Children’s Christmas party at Eagle's View with their infectious laughter and unbridled enthusiasm. The children had fun unleashing their creativity and working together to decorate their Gingerbread man. Santa also made a special appearance and even went around the Club distributing candies. The bouncy castle at the Terrace fountain area had the kids jumping for joy and sliding to their hearts’ content, and the Victoria Chorale lifted everyone’s spirits at the end of a long day with their medley of Christmas songs. FESTIVE CELEBRATION

Great party! My missus and I enjoyed ourselves very much and kudos to you guys for making this party a success! Wishing everyone at Seletar Country Club all the best in 2019! – Charles Chui

It should come as no surprise that Seletarians know how to a have a good time, and that we certainly did at Seletar’s Black & White Countdown Party on 31 December 2018! Comedian and emcee, Rishi Budhrani, kept the crowd entertained through the night. There were table games, a mini dance competition and even best dressed awards to be given out. With the party in full swing before the clock struck twelve, guests lit up the dance floor, while others mingled around and soaked in the good cheer over drinks, all waiting for the countdown and iconic balloon drop at the stroke of midnight. Indeed, it truly felt like a new year had descended as hundreds of balloons fell, at once signifying the end of a year and the anticipation of a new year that is yet to come! After a swelling chorus of Auld Lang Syne, traditionally played at midnight on New Year’s Eve as an expression of nostalgia, hope and friendship, the guests trooped back to Seletar Room for a light supper and final lucky draw.

Striking for Fortune at Seletar Bowl

Can you spot the lion head?

Tossing up good fortune

It was a sea of red at Seletar Bowl on 16 February as our bowlers came all dressed to strike for luck and fortune at the Hong Bao Bowl 2019! The day started with a prosperity Lo Hei and sumptuous buffet spread, and MC member Alvin Khoo opened the event with a roll-off. It was as much a competition of luck that day, as members who scored over 100 and ending with the auspicious digit 8 were entered into a lucky dip to win cash prizes! For members who had scores over 200 and ending with the digit 8, they were entitled to a special dip with cash prizes as high as $888. Though no one took home the top prize that day, everyone had fun and went home with winning smiles and the warm glow of camaraderie!

A Roaring Start To The New Year!

Huat ah!

The Club was buzzing with thrill and excitement on the Saturday evening of 16 February as we welcomed the spectacular Lion dance performance. The awardwinning Qing Wei Lion & Dragon Cultural Troupe wowed everyone with their acrobatic stunts and gravity defying feats, displaying strength and agility. The pivotal plucking of the green was a heart-stopping affair as the lion plucked, ‘ate’ and spit out the suspended lettuce to shower the crowd with good luck. Here’s wishing all Seletarians an auspicious New Year!

with Seletar’s Golden Girl, Hailey We checked in with Hailey Loh, Champion of the 27th SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Golf Championship’s (Girl’s Division), on how she celebrates the New Year with her family! This is the first time that the Girl’s Division was won by a Singaporean, and we couldn’t be prouder of her. The 15 year old also won the Eagles Cup for being the best girl Singapore performer. Because New Year is a time for family, we ask her for her favourite family traditions and memories at Seletar!

1. Your favourite Chinese New Year activity is… visiting my cousins! Especially my distant relatives whom I don't get to meet as often. Chinese New Year reunions serves as a good time for us to catch up with one another.

2. One thing that your family will do every Lunar New Year is… to have a steamboat dinner with my cousins. We all look forward to it every year!

3. Your favourite food at the Club is… I haven't eaten at the club for a very long time but I would have to say that the food that is served at the halfway house is definitely very nice!

4. Your fondest memories at Seletar… Having played golf at Seletar since I was four years old, Seletar Country Club can definitely be called "my second home". From the four-hour training sessions at the range to playing ping pong with my friends after golf, I have definitely made many fond memories at Seletar.

READY GOLF: MAJOR RULE CHANGES FOR 2019 In this issue and the next few issues of Seletar Buzz, we bring you some of the major changes expected to have the most impact on your game. More information can also be found at http://www.usga.org.

Summary of the Major Rule Changes: When Things Happen to Your Ball in Play (1) Ball at Rest Accidentally Moves • Accidentally moving your ball while searching for it: There is no longer a penalty. • Accidentally moving your ball or ball-marker when it is on the putting green: There is no longer a penalty. • New standard for deciding if you caused your ball to move: You will be found to have caused your ball to move only if that is known or virtually certain (that is, it is at least 95% likely that you were the cause).

(2) Replacing a Moved or Lifted Ball • New procedure when you don’t know the exact spot where your ball was at rest: You must replace the ball on its estimated original spot (rather than drop the ball at that spot); and if the estimated spot was on, under or against growing, attached or fixed objects (such as grass), you must replace the ball on, under or against those objects. (3) Ball in Motion Accidentally Deflected • Your ball in motion accidentally hits you, your equipment, your caddie, someone attending the flagstick for you or a removed or attended flagstick: There is no longer a penalty (such as when your ball bounces off a bunker face and hits you). (4) Ball is Struck More Than Once • Accidentally hitting your ball more than once during a stroke: There is no longer a penalty.

GOLF'S NEW RULES: KEY CHANGES The R&A and the USGA have released golf's new Rules, which took effect on January 1, 2019. Here are some of the most significant changes. How to Drop a Ball You will drop your ball from knee height into the relief area.

Leaving Flagstick in the Hole If you make a stroke from on the green and your ball hits the flagstick in the hole, there will be no penalty.

Time for Ball Search

Repairing Spike Marks

Three minutes will be the maximum allotted time to search for a ball, rather than the current five minutes.

You will be allowed to repair spike marks and any other damage on the putting green caused by a person, an animal or maintenance practices.

Relaxed Rules in Penalty Area

Player Conduct & Integrity

You will be allowed to ground your club and move loose impediments in a penalty area (an expanded concept of water hazards that does not include bunkers).

The new rules directly address the high standards of conduct expected from players.

15 Minutes

with Coach Nelson As the resident swimming coach at Seletar, Nelson has been teaching for over 30 years! Specialised in creating swimming and aquatic/fitness classes for babies to adults and even those with special needs, Nelson is also a certified Lifesaving instructor. Q. Are there certain swim strokes that are good for different age groups? A. Yes, the freestyle and back stroke are good for older people and those with back injury. Young people with good physique can do all the 4 different strokes. Q. How old is your oldest student and how young is your youngest? A. I taught one who was 68 years old, and the youngest was 18 months old. Swimming is good for both the young and old. It is a life skill, plus it is low-impact and less likely for one to incur injuries while working out. Q. Why should everyone learn to swim? A. We’re surrounded by water! There are pools everywhere, and you never know when it could save your life. It is also good exercise in Singapore’s hot weather.
