CRUISING FOR ART Welcome to the Seen Magazine Homotopia feature. We are proudly partnering the festival for the secound year and wait till you see what they have instore.

omotopia goes from strength to strength and the good news is that the art festival will now receive some funding for the next three years from Arts Council England. The festival was one of 1,300 organisations which applied for the funding. Director Gary Everett says: “With this support and the continuing support of Liverpool City Council we can engage with more artists, writers, producers, dancers and performers to reach new communities.” Homotopia started in November 2004 with a handful of arts events. Until last year, it was Liverpool’s only LGBT celebration. Previous participating artists have included

Sarah Waters, Nigel Charnock, Sadie Lee, David Hoyle, Gary Clarke and Armistead Maupin. This year’s line up brings even more to the city and is a refreshing alternative to the usual pub and club scene associated with the LGBT community. We are treated to plays films and art exhibitions covering the whole of Liverpool and this year we are promised more interactivity than ever before – so what are you waiting for, grab a coffee and peruse through our pages of what’s on this year and get your tickets now! This one will be bigger, better, sexier and more vibrant than ever.

Lavender Girls

local girls Keddy and Gill are performing Scotty Road the musical The Homotopia comedy club Lavender Girls returns following the success of 2010’s show. With live music from experimental, visual indie-band Zorras and acoustic indie outfit The Spinster (featuring Homotopia 2011 campaign artist Sadie Lee on electric ukelele) , comedy from local girl Rosie Wilby, comedian, actress and singer Keddy Sutton. How it all began…. I was performing with Gillian Hardie in Stags n Hens The Remix at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool, [Directed by Willy Russell and Bob Eaton] when the idea for our show emerged… I was playing a dippy Scouser called Maureen and Gill was playing a loudmouthed Scouser called Bernie. I’m a big fan of The Musical ‘Chicago’ and one day we were all leaning over a balcony on stage. I turned to Gill and said, ’can you imagine if the story of ‘Chicago was set in Liverpool Scotty Road.... How funny would it be if ‘The Cell Block Tango’ were just a load of Scouse women kicking off about really mundane things? Before we knew it we were in hysterics and devising it there and then. Then we were both cast in Slappers n Slapheads in very similar roles that we loved playing and we thought wouldn’t it be fun to develop these two type of

characters and devise and write our own full length show. So.. That’s what we’ve been doing … We work really well together as a team, writing songs together in various venues in Liverpool and even over the phone. Gill wrote a verse of ‘My mate Caz’ on the stairs as we were both waiting to go in for a casting. And on our journey to writing ‘Scotty road The Musical’, we’ve been performing the songs in cabaret comedy format to develop our material. Our first gig was at the kazimier for Spike Theatre. We had one written song and we improvised the other to a backing track. It went down a storm and our motto became ‘Run before you can walk’ and our characters were christened ‘Caz n Britney Present’ [I do like to be in things with a ‘N’ in the middle].. We’ve gone on to perform and host at Liverpool pride, The Everyman Theatres farewell Cabaret, ‘Come on girls’ At Studio Liverpool, Bar Circo, Dollman’s Disco, Here Come The Girls, Modo, Platts Chapel Manchester, Frog n bucket Manchester and we have got down to the final of ‘L Talent’ in London at the Summer Glitter ball on The HMS President. “Scotty Road the Musical The inimitable Caz and Britney, aka Keddy Sutton and Gill Hardie, who are making waves with their sublimely ridiculous scally pastiche of Chicago....” MADE UP - LIVERPOOL Review from ‘COME ON GIRLS’ by Scotty Road the Musical.

Underclass Hero

A show created and performed by Joseph Mercier Produced by Clara Giraud

La John Joseph

Transdrogynous, globe-trotting performance-starlet La JohnJoseph, returns to Liverpool this November to present “Underclass Hero”, the frank and almost charming tale of his formative years on the most glamorous council estates of the Thatcher era. A true tale, told with warm wit, this is the memoir of an oversexed, underage Catholic from Kirkby. Part JT LeRoy, part Evelyn Waugh, part Penny Arcade, the show is morbidly funny and genuinely raw, combining outspoken monologues

After the success of Giselle, or I’m Too Horny to be a Prince, a solo show in which Joseph Mercier blended ballet, kink and S&M, the choreographer comes back to Liverpool to premiere his latest dance performance. Cruising, Clubbing, F****** is a dance theatre show exploring how gay men have met and seduced each other, from the 60’s to the present day. Blending bodies with beats and contemporary dance styles with gesture,
