SEDBERGH SCHOOL

LEADING COACHING FOR CHILDREN Founded by the Provost of Eton in 1525, Sedbergh is one of the oldest and most prestigious boarding schools in the UK. Set between the idyllic Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, our magnificent location and our dedicated staff create a safe, healthy and dynamic environment in which our pupils and young people joining us for our Easter and Summer courses, flourish. In addition to our established courses, this year we are adding the option of extending a two-course stay with an activity weekend, creating a 10 night stay with us. Our Coaching and Pastoral staff know that everyone can perform to the best of their ability when feeling inspired, confident and cared for, and are second to none in their dedication and commitment. Where courses are run in conjunction with other hand-picked venues, transport will be on Sedbergh buses with our own drivers, and everyone will return to school to enjoy a full programme of evening activities with our pastoral staff. For children travelling to Sedbergh unaccompanied, we provide a mini-bus service to and from Oxenholme train station. For families wishing to holiday near their children, our website offers advice on “where to stay” and “what to do” to make the most of one of the most beautiful areas of the country. We look forward to meeting new friends, welcoming those returning, learning new skills and joining in with our extravaganza party night on Wednesdays! For further information or to book, please do call Nicky or David on 015396 22616 or visit: www.sedberghschool.org/summercourses SEDBERGH SCHOOL

CRICKET WITH MARTIN SPEIGHT COURSE DATES 3-6 APRIL 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 Martin Speight is a professional cricket coach and full-time coach at Sedbergh, and is a truly inspirational teacher. Martin represented Sussex CCC and Durham CCC playing nearly two hundred matches during his professional career and scoring over 9,000 first class runs, effecting nearly 300 dismissals and over 5,000 one day runs. “This course is not just about developing the technical skills of batting, bowling, keeping and fielding. It is also about making decisions and creating positive learning experiences, allowing players to develop their own knowledge and confidence, and helping to build on their enjoyment of the game.”

Martin delivers a highly structured course covering all disciplines of the game with great passion. Players are individually supported throughout the course, encouraged to drive their game forward to the very best of their ability, and are inevitably inspired to build on their new level of confidence. Each player leaves with a detailed personal profile to take away with them for future development. Young players return year after year to learn with Martin, and we are delighted to be welcoming a growing number of girls to play cricket at Sedbergh.

RUGBY 7S WITH NICK ROYLE COURSE DATES 3-6 ARIL 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 Ex England International and 7s specialist Nick Royle is returning to lead our Rugby Sevens course at Easter, and is again supported by Jason Duffy, Sedbergh Development Coach and England U16 coach. Nick is a highly-respected RFU development coach and, as well as delivering an exciting skills-based course on the pitch, will have a strategic focus on ‘child development’ with the spotlight on encouraging resilience, confidence and leadership. Rugby 7s has hit the headlines many times since being included in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and is seen as a serious route of talent development for aspiring full England internationals. This course will give all participants a chance to further develop the tactical and technical awareness needed for the modern game of 7s, split-second decision making, imaginative distribution skills and evasive attacking, all of which are equally important for and transferable to XV side.

SEDBERGH SCHOOL

“I am really looking forward to returning to Sedbergh to deliver some more exciting 7s rugby coaching in the Easter holidays. Through a lot of hard work and determination, I fulfilled my childhood dream of representing my country, and really enjoy sharing my experiences with, and helping develop, our next generation of players.”

ATHLETICS WITH DEAN MACEY COURSE DATES 24-27 JULY & 7-10 AUGUST 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 This will be Dean’s fourth year at Sedbergh and we are very much looking forward to welcoming him back again. Dean is undoubtedly one of the biggest personalities in British sport and spends much of his time developing young athletes and encouraging them to be the best that they can be – giving back to the sport that gave him so much. “Over the four days at Sedbergh, we not only help improve performance, but we will help build the single most important attribute any athlete needs…Confidence!”

Dean’s passion and enthusiasm are mirrored in the achievements of the young athletes he works with. He is a keen advocate of multi-skills training in track and field and the benefits that can also transfer to many other sports. Dean and his coaches develop running, jumping and throwing skills, alongside co-ordination and balance, all of which are pre-requisites to being successful in any chosen sport. Communication, team work and working independently are highly valued life-skills that he also encourages and develops with his young athletes.

HOCKEY WITH CRISTA CULLEN MBE COURSE DATES 31 JULY-3 AUGUST AND 7-10 AUGUST 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 From Rio to Sedbergh! We are thrilled that Crista Cullen will be leading our hockey courses in 2017, hot on the heels of having won Gold at the Rio Olympics and receiving her MBE! In addition to fabulous success in Rio, Crista has over 185 Great Britain and England combined caps, Olympic Bronze from London 2012 and Commonwealth Bronze from 2006 – the year in which she was also awarded GB’s Player of the Year and named in the Hockey Federation’s World All Stars Team (as she was again in 2007 & 2010). In addition to playing small-sided games and executing drills to improve coordination, strength, reflexes and agility, players learn to work as a team, develop strong communication and listening skills and build on self-esteem and sportsmanship. By creating open game environments, players actively participate in their own learning, and take away new skills that will be valuable in all areas of their future lives.

“I am really looking forward to leading the Sedbergh Summer Camps 2017. I started at the same age as these young players, have enjoyed an amazing career and many friendships born out of hockey, and I know we are going to have a fantastic fortnight.”

HORSE RIDING AND TREKKING WITH STONETRAIL COURSE DATES 3-6 APRIL, 24-27 JULY & 31 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2017

AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 We are delighted to offer our Horse Riding and Trekking courses again for 2017 with Alison and her amazing team. Stonetrail is a BHS “Highly Acclaimed” riding centre which specialises in open hacking and long distance trail riding. For the past 10 years Stonetrail has carefully led hundreds of riders across some of the most remote and beautiful parts of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales, experiencing “real riding” and helping make horse riding adventures come true. This course is unique in offering riders the opportunity to improve their skills and confidence out in open countryside which is accessed directly from the stable gates. Riders will be grouped by ability so that everyone enjoys every minute of their time with the ponies. In addition to the trekking, horse-mad children will be able to take part in mounted games, learn about horse care and stable management, and do some jumping. In the evenings the riders return to Sedbergh to be looked after by our own dedicated pastoral staff. 19

SEDBERGH SCHOOL

“I am thrilled that we are heading into our third year of courses, and all of us here at Stonetrail (on two and four legs!) are already planning some great new adventures for 2017. It has been fabulous to watch the young riders grow in skill and confidence, to see strong friendships develop within the groups, and to welcome so many back for their second or third visits.”

MODERN PENTATHLON WITH BERNIE MOSS COURSE DATES 31 JULY-3 AUGUST 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 For a second year under the expert tutelage of former Great Britain Olympic and National Coach, Bernie Moss, we are offering young athletes the opportunity to experience and train in all five of the individual disciplines of Pistol Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Running and Horse-Riding. This course will be tailored and adapted to ensure that, however experienced in any one or all of the Modern Pentathlon events already, all athletes will improve their all-round fitness, courage and confidence, as well as having an enormous amount of fun! This is a fabulous chance for young people to experience and develop new areas of expertise and to work with an inspirational coach. Founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced Modern Pentathlon into the 1912 Games believed that this event, above all others, “tests an athlete’s moral qualities as much as their physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed being at Sedbergh last year, working with a great group of children, of all ages and ability and experience of the disciplines. As well as improving physical skills, shooting helps tune mental skills and fencing the co-ordination skills. I was really impressed by the hard work and enthusiasm, and, on top of that, we all had a lot of fun and laughter!”

NETBALL WITH KAREN GREIG COURSE DATES 24-27 JULY AND 31 JULY-3 AUGUST 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 We are thrilled that Karen Greig is leading our netball courses again in 2017. In addition to her having won 31 caps for England, Karen was Goal Shooter for Thunder, captaining her team to the Superleague title in 2012 and is now their Head Coach. Karen has worked with England’s north-west youngsters since 2008 as a Performance Pathway Coach, encouraging and helping many talented regional athletes reach the pinnacle of their careers playing for England across different age groups. Over and above their improvement in flexibility, reaction time and stamina, core stability and balance, the players will learn to read the game and problem-solve quickly in a team situation and be enthused by Karen’s incredible passion for netball, all of which will result in another fantastic experience here in Sedbergh.

“I can’t wait to return to Sedbergh. Last year the girls not only improved their gaming and team skills, but also their life skills and I watched them becoming better all-round athletes and making great friendships in their time here.”

RUGBY WITH NEIL BACK MBE COURSE DATES 24-27 JULY, 31 JULY-3 AUGUST & 7-10 AUGUST 2017

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 We are delighted to announce that our new Lead Coach for Rugby 2017 is Neil Back MBE.

“This course is not just about professional rugby and playing for the county, or for England. It is also about enjoyment. It’s about delivering environments which create the right behaviour and team ethic.”

During an illustrious, first class playing career, Neil Back played in 3 World Cups, notably in the 2003 Winning side, and went on 3 British and Irish Lions tours. He has 66 England caps, he captained England to victory 4 times, scored 16 tries, and is the only England Forward to have scored a test match drop goal! On top of an amazing playing career, Neil now has more than 10 years coaching experience. He will break the game down into core skills and, within this course, will provide opportunities to develop independence, self-organisation and creative thinking, in addition to improvements in technical and tactical playing skills. THEATRE WORKSHOP WITH GEORGE WANT COURSE DATES 24-27 JULY 2016

FOR AGES 10-15 FULLY RESIDENTIAL – £449 At Sedbergh we believe that Drama is about much more than putting on plays. By introducing the limitless opportunities for creativity and collaboration synonymous with performance, we help young people build confidence and empathy and learn how to express themselves more articulately. “We have lots of new ideas for 2017 that will build on the amazing week we had last year, and we are counting the weeks! The input from all of the children last year was a real joy and inspiration.”

Led by George Want, a National Youth Theatre Director and our very own Cathy Want, Director of Drama, this an exciting opportunity for everyone to develop their skills in characterisation and movement, leading up to a performance of an original, devised piece of theatre at the end of the course. George and Cathy promise to stimulate creativity and imagination in bringing this course to life, the final performance of which will be decided on with the participants themselves, making the most of natural and inherent talents in combination with those newly acquired.
