FULL BOARDING 13-18

OUR HOUSES Arguably, boarding is what Sedbergh does better than any other school in the country. We take the view that everyone performs best when they feel cared for, confident and relaxed; therefore we make sure our pastoral care is second to none, and have established a successful House system to foster a caring environment, and create smaller, tight-knit, cross-year communities within the School. Sedbergh has nine senior Houses in total: six for boys and three for girls. Each House has its own library (in addition to the School Library), common rooms, computer suite and dining room, enabling pupils to study, socialise and dine in their House as well as sleep. Uniquely, we also have an in-house health centre with our own doctor, nurses and physiotherapist. The Houses have a relaxed and homely feel and this is encouraged by the resident Housemaster or Housemistress. There are also resident Matrons and House Tutors associated with each House, who are supported by a strong team of non-resident Tutors. Together, they closely monior pupils' welfare as well as their academic progress and social development. Senior pupils also offer positive support for the younger ones, whether by helping them to find their way around, playing games with them or assisting them with 'Prep'. Each House offers an exciting array of activities - ranging from pure fun to the more serious inter-House competitions, which cover almost every facet of School life, be it chess, rugby, sailing or netball, academic challenge, music or drama. This range is deliberate to encourage every pupil to feel they have something worthwhile to contribute, and also to help expand each pupil's horizons so that they truly gain an all-round education. With their own colours, flag, motto and emblem, House members develop a strong sense of loyalty to their House and pride in its achievements, which cultivates important qualities such as a sense of belonging, team work and self-confidence.
