Mindy Stepp says she started working with Sedalia Habitat for Humanity four years ago as a means of learning property maintenance and building trade skills to help her keep up her own rental properties. “Someone suggested it would be a good way to work with contractors and seasoned construction guys,” Stepp said. A former president of the Sedalia Landlord’s Association, she now serves as the president of the board for Sedalia Habitat, a Christian-based volunteer organization which builds affordable homes for qualified lowincome families and individuals. While learning a few trade skills may have motivated Stepp in the beginning, the feeling of “building something that lasts for someone” soon took over. “I was hooked after my first build. It is such an emotional thing, just to see the look on the faces of people when you turn over the keys to their own home. It is a feeling like nothing else,” Stepp said. Since the Sedalia chapter of the organization opened in 1988, volunteers have built 25 homes and are currently completing work on their next project at a home along East Tower Street. After that, the group will be rehabbing a home donated to the organization by the estate of its late owner. “This is my first rehab and I am excited to see how it turns out,” Stepp said. In addition to her role as president, Stepp also serves as the chairwoman of the group’s fundraising committee. She said bake sales, financial and inkind donations and other fundraisers help the group secure the roughly

$60,000 it takes to complete a project. As part of that role, Stepp oversees an ongoing garage sale the group launched this spring, which is held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday at the Peddler’s Post, at 24587 state Route O about one mile north of U.S. Highway 50, east of Sedalia. Sale items, which include plumbing and painting supplies, door hardware, caulk, silicone, light fixtures and ceiling fans, all come as donated items left over from construction projects. Stepp said items are priced lower than their retail value “so we can use the donated items to help people that don’t necessarily qualify for a home.” “Everything costs less than it would in the store, and if someone really needs an item I am willing to negotiate,” Stepp said. Space for the sale at Peddler’s Post was donated by the business’ owner and Stepp’s friend, Brenda Sprinkle. “I have just been associated with it through her for the last couple of years. I haven’t been out to help build, but I care about what they are doing and this seemed like a way to help,” Sprinkle said. Stepp said community support like that of Sprinkle is essential to helping Sedalia Habitat continue its mission. “What Habitat does would be impossible without volunteers and community support,” Stepp said. “You can give to other charities, but Habitat makes something tangible. People can see the home going up. I think that makes a difference.”

It’s Christmas in July as D & T Quilt Shop hosts their annual sale July 14, 15 & 16

Area quilters will want to mark their calendars as Theresa Gerber is gearing up for her Christmas in July Sale. This annual event is Theresa’s biggest sale of the year and will feature sales on fabrics & quilting supplies. Theresa opened D & T Quilt Shop in 1988; but her love for quilting and sewing started many years prior to that when her mother began teaching her how to sew and quilt. Since opening her business, Theresa has helped many people create quilts that are works of art. Theresa and her husband Doyle moved to Sedalia in 1988, after Doyle retired from the Air Force. They then opened Gerber Small Engine in 1988, and in 1991 built the quilt shop. Since that time they have added on to the building and now have approximately 1,200 square feet of space. Theresa says that everyone knows she loves fabrics and that’s why her shop is full of many beautiful ones to choose from. Theresa helps her customers select the best fabrics for their sewing projects and sells a variety of them with over 7,000 bolts of fabric in stock. In addition, Theresa sells patterns, books, embroidery blocks, DMC floss, notions, YLI quilting thread, a full line of Sulky thread, Mettler thread, ISAcord Thread for machine Enby, OESD Stabalizers, and more. Theresa has worked with many quilting guilds. “All quilting guilds are welcome and we have a good time,” Theresa said. She will also sew tops together as well as hand quilts and machine quilts. “I have friends that help me with this. My best friend, who lives in Peculiar, MO, comes down to the shop and helps me. I also have two ladies that machine quilt and two ladies that hand quilt. Also, if you have a quilt that someone left you or just one you started yourself and don’t know how to finish, we can do that for you.” For convenience, orders can be shipped and customers can sign on for email flyers and sale specials. D & T Quilt Shop is located at 3620 So. Marshall Avenue in Sedalia and is open 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturday. For more information call 660-826-4788.

Theresa Gerber invites sewing enthusiasts of all levels to her “Christmas in July Sale” for fantastic savings throughout the shop. She will be open the 14th and 15th from 9am to 5pm and open the 16th from 9am to 4pm.

Q: I am so happy "Hardcore Pawn" has returned for a fourth season. Will it be back for a fifth, or is it too early to tell? -- Dirk S., via e-mail A: TruTV's breakout hit, which centers on one of the world's largest pawn shops, had such terrific premiere ratings for Season Four that the network has already renewed it for another 13-episode season, which is slated to begin later this year. *** Q: I was sad when Thad Luckinbill left "The Young and The Restless" last year, so you can imagine how happy I was to see him on the CW's "Nikita." Will his character be back for Season Two? -- Charlene, via email A: Thad, who you also can see this month in Hallmark Channel's "Keeping Up With the Randalls," gave me the scoop: "I think that's yet to be determined. They were honest about it and told me that they weren't sure exactly what to do with it, so that is why they left it open. It's like anything, I think if the story's right and it matches up to bring him back, then that would be great. I would love it. If it does-

n't, it doesn't. "I think it would be a good twist if they decided to bring him back. It was really a fun group to work with and a really cool show. I love how stylized that show is. I think that was what I was most impressed with. Not just the way they shoot, but the way it looks. It's just a really pretty show." *** Q: I recently found out that Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were dating, and now I hear they've married! Is that true? -Hannah D., Detroit A: That sound you just heard was the collective sigh of millions of women worldwide who wouldn't have minded becoming Mrs. James Bond themselves one day. It is true: Daniel and Rachel married in a super-secret ceremony (befitting a superspy and his lady love) in New York on June 22. A source close to the couple told "News of the World": "They are madly in love, and couldn't wait to be husband and wife -- but they wanted minimum fuss. They had a couple of friends as witnesses and their children from previous relationships, and that was it." *** Q: I can't wait for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" to hit the

• On July 18, AD 64, the great fire of Rome breaks out and destroys much of the city. Despite the well-known stories, there is no evidence that Roman emperor Nero either started the fire or played the fiddle while it burned. The fiddle did not even exist at the time. Nero was actually 35 miles away in Antium when the fire broke out. • On July 21, AD 365, a powerful earthquake off the coast of Greece causes a tsunami that devastates the city of Alexandria, Egypt. It was not until 1995 that archaeologists discovered the ruins of the old city off the coast of present-day Alexandria.

theaters, especially after seeing some first-look pictures in "Entertainment Weekly." Can you tell me which actors from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy will be back for "The Hobbit"? -Patrick L., Akron, Ohio A: So far, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellan, Christopher Lee, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm and Hugo Weaving are set to return to Middle Earth. Liv Tyler, who played Arwen in the trilogy, is keen to make a cameo in the latest films, however, as of this writing, there are no plans to resurrect her character. • On July 19, 1879, Doc Holliday commits his first murder, killing a man for shooting up his New Mexico saloon. Despite his formidable reputation as a deadly gunslinger, Doc Holliday only engaged in eight shootouts during his life, and it has only been verified that he killed two men. • On July 24, 1901, William Sydney Porter, otherwise known as O. Henry, is released from prison after serving three years in jail for embezzlement from a bank in Austin, Texas. He began writing stories to support his young daughter while he was in prison.

Crappie tactics you can try today

Welcome to my corner of the new weekend edition of the Sedalia Democrat. I could think of no better way to inaugurate my new look — check out the photo — than to give you some news you can use to catch a mess of crappie today or tomorrow. Depth. Of all the factors that can spell the difference between having fried fish or a bologna sandwich for supper, none is as important as depth. Determining the range of depths to fish is a matter of pure science. During the summer months in the Continental United States, the water in almost all large reservoirs and natural lakes — as well as many smaller ones — stratifies into three distinct layers. The uppermost layer (the epilimnion) is seldom more than six to eight feet thick. It’s too warm for crappie to remain in for any length of time, despite the fact that it’s rich in oxygen and nutrients. The bottom layer (the hypolimnion), may begin as little as 15 feet or as much as 50 feet beneath the surface on different lakes or at different times on the same lake. It’s not only colder than crappie will tolerate if given a choice, but it’s also virtually devoid of oxygen in virtually all lakes with maximum depths of less than 100 feet and in many deeper lakes as well. In between these two extremes lies a 10- to 30-foot thick layer of water called the thermocline. It features plenty of oxygen and a fairly rapid temperature gradient that allows many species of fish to find their individual preferred comfort zone. I hope it’s obvious that you’ll want to keep your bait or lure somewhere within the thermocline, but where? The easiest way to answer that question is to ask successful anglers how deep they’ve been finding crappie. Note that I didn’t say to ask how deep the water was. That’s because, to a crappie, how much water is above his head is far more important than how much water is under his belly. If there’s no one around to ask, either start fishing about eight feet beneath the surface and slowly work your way down or start at about 20 feet and slowly work your bait or lure back up. Structure. When the outdoor media invented the term “structure, to help explain where bass tournament angler were finding fish, it met natural or manmade irregularities in the bottom of a lake. Wood, weeds and other qualifiers were called “objects. These days what most people call structure includes anything and everything that distinguishes a particular location, so that’s the way I’ll use it here. On some lakes — north central Missouri’s Thomas Hill Lake is a prime example — schools of summer crappie ignore structure in favor of roaming the main lake basin suspended beneath schools of shad. These fish are a potential bonanza to be sure, but they can be frustratingly hard to locate.

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

Fortunately for those of us with less than infinite patience, the habitat in most Midwestern reservoirs includes enough crappie-attracting structures like flooded standing timber on creek channel flats or along bluffs to keep us happily jerking perch all summer long. Or at least it would if all flooded timber were created equal in a crappie’s eyes. Alas, they aren’t. I do most of my summer crappie fishing on Truman, and — you can mark my word for it on this one — every crappie more than 9 inches long in the entire lake has a master’s degree in forestry. I know of no other way to explain why, on any given day, only a single species or, at most, genus of tree will be hosting 90 percent of the lake’s crappie. I might as well admit it, I’m not as good as I should be at identifying live trees, let alone dead, almost entirely submerged ones. But I do know an Osage orange (hedge) tree when I see one, and I can tell the difference between the large branching limbs of a white oak and the straight trunk of a black oak. That — and a willingness to concentrate on the trees the crappie are using that day — is all you or I need to know. Live bait or jigs. By far the best fatherand-sons crappie-catching team I know uses nothing but jigs the year round. Experienced — and I do mean experienced — crappie anglers will catch a higher percentage of keepers on jigs than anyone will on minnows. That said, anyone who doesn’t mind catching 50 crappie in order to go home with 15 keepers should chose minnows. As for me, I wouldn’t think of going crappie fishing during the summer months without a couple of rods rigged for minnows and at least one rigged for jigging. Many crappie anglers who prefer jigs agonize over choosing the color of the plastic tube or curly tail they use. Not me. I always start with a 1/32-ounce jig tipped with a 1-inch tube with a dark green body and chartreuse tails. That’s also what I most often end up with, but I carry a box full of bodies in a wide variety of colors just in case. Here’s a final suggestion that guaranteed to make the crappie you catch taste better. Leave your boat’s live well dry, and put your fish on ice as soon as they’re caught. This storage method has the additional advantage of allowing you time for a short break after you get home before you have to clean fish.
