When Jim Monroe retired from State Fair Community College after teaching chemistry from 1992 to 2005, his wife, Joyce, “was concerned that he would need something to do.” She noted that he doesn’t go fishing, or do woodworking; “He doesn’t have any hobbies,” she said. So when Monroe decided to commit to volunteer work, his wife, now president of the Bothwell Regional Health Center Auxiliary, told him he would have to look elsewhere. “I wouldn’t let him join,” Joyce said. Monroe latched on with the American Red Cross, and has devoted himself to the cause. “He’s just a great person and anything we ask of him, he’ll do it,” said Valarie Swanson, executive director of the Pettis County chapter of the American Red Cross. She said Monroe logs 500 to 600 volunteer hours per year for the Red Cross, mainly working the front desk at Bothwell Regional Health Center. Monroe works at the desk every Wednesday, admitting patients, transporting patients to and from their rooms via wheelchair, and delivering flowers and mail. But that is only part of his duties at the hospital. The work that Monroe calls “the most satisfying” is serving as a volunteer chaplain from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every Tuesday. He said it has been gratifying to see “how many people need the Lord,” and he is grateful that he can bring comfort to patients and families at a time when they need it. Monroe is not a trained member of the clergy, but he

does serve as an elder at Parkview Christian Church. A couple of years ago Tony Chapman, Bothwell’s chaplain, initiated a program to bring in a corps of volunteers to help address as many spiritual needs at the hospital as possible. Monroe is one of nine people filling that role. “Some are pastors, some are elders, some just Christians who desire to serve in that capacity,” Monroe said. Chapman said Monroe is a natural for the role. “People absolutely love him,” Chapman said. “His sincerity comes through strongly.” Monroe, who has been to China twice and to Cambodia once on church mission trips, also is focused on adding new, and younger, volunteers to the Red Cross and BRHC Auxiliary. “There are so many ways to serve at Bothwell,” he said, citing the work volunteers do in the joint replacement center, emergency room, gift shop and concern desk, among others. “More volunteers are needed; ours is an aging population. We are just now starting to get some younger volunteers, and what we really need are people who can push the wheelchairs.” He and his wife have started speaking to local groups, trying to recruit more volunteers. Joyce Monroe said she is glad Jim is doing something he truly enjoys and cares about. “He’s a blessing to the people he serves,” she said. Chapman said: “There is a sophistication about him, an inner strength. He is a great representative of the hospital, and he adds quality to the time that people spend here (at Bothwell).”

Dale Malone, owner of Daisy Dukes & Cowboy Boots, presents a check for $10,000 to Valarie Swanson, executive director of the Pettis County chapter of the American Red Cross. Malone recently held fundraisers at the barrestaurant to help tornado victims in Joplin and Sedalia.

For those who haven't seen the show, "DDD" is a one-hour comedic drama that tells the story of a shallow wannabe model who dies in a sudden accident, only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney, Jane. This season's guest stars include Paula Abdul, Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, Clay Aiken, Lance Bass, Amanda Bearse, Tony Goldwyn, Howard Hesseman, Sharon Lawrence, Jennifer Tilly, Quinton Aaron and more. *** Q: I was watching a new sitcom on ABC called "Happy Endings," and the actor who plays Dave looks very familiar. What else might I have seen him in? -- Jerry G., via email A: Well, I remember Zachary Knighton best as Bryce from the shouldn't-have-been-canceled show "FlashForward." I also rewatched "The Prince and Me" recently, and realized that he plays one of Julia Stiles' brothers in that movie. He's also had guest roles on "House, M.D." and "Bones," as well as "Law and Order" and "Law and Order: SVU." Stop me when something sounds familiar .... *** Q: I was so happy to hear that FX's "Justified" has been renewed for a third season; however, I was

sad to see Joseph Lyle Taylor's character, Doyle, get killed in the secondseason finale. Now that his run on "Justified" is over, where can I catch this talented actor next? -Fanny R., Tulsa, Okla. A: Joseph's next role is that of Martin Chisholm in the feature film "Seven Days in Utopia," which also stars Melissa Leo, Robert Duvall and Lucas Black. Joseph told me a bit about the film: "It's really a heartfelt

Joseph Lyle Taylor

movie about this kid, played by Lucas Black, finding himself. I play his father. It's such a pretty script. "My character rides his son hard to do his best in golf and makes him practice and this and that. He ends up giving him some bad advice, and his son ends up not winning the tournament, takes off and that is where he meets Robert Duvall (who plays Johnny Crawford) out in Utopia. He learns some life lessons out there, and he comes back and tries to make amends with his father. It's really touching." *** Q: What has my favorite actress, Meryl Streep, been up to lately? -David R. in Alabama A: Meryl is busy filming "The Iron Lady," where she plays the U.K.'s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Word from the set is that her portrayal is astonishing, and her transformation is absolutely stunning. Look for "The Iron Lady" in late 2011, just in time to be considered for the Oscars. Your Safety

(NAPS)-Make safety a priority in your home when you clean. Here are tips to help: Living Room/Dining Room • Secure all bookcases, shelving and heavy furniture. Place heavier items on lower shelves and in bottom drawers. • Many houseplants are poisonous and pots are heavy, so keep them out of reach of little hands. • Use plug protectors for all unused wall outlets. Bathroom • To prevent bathwater scalds, set the thermostat of your hot water heater no higher than 120 degrees F. It takes just three seconds for a child to sustain a third degree burn at 140 degrees F. • Always request childresistant packaging for medicine, but go a step further by making sure medicine cabinets are locked at all times. Even items that may seem harmless can be dangerous to Protect your children and pets by using a child. only cordless window products. Kitchen • Keep sharp knives and other utensils well out of reach and make sure that knife blades are pointing down when placed in a dishwasher’s cutlery basket. • When cooking, always use the back burners, turn pot handles toward the back of the stove and keep hot foods and liquids away from young children. • And make sure microwaves are out of reach of children as well; the vast majority of microwave burns among children are serious scald burns. Bedroom • Make sure cribs are properly assembled and meet current safety standards, and that crib mattresses fit snugly. • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, infants and young children can die from accidentally strangling in window cords. The Window Covering Safety Council reminds parents and caregivers of potential window-cord dangers and urges them to make the right choice and use only cordless window products in homes with young children. Owners and renters should replace all corded window coverings made before 2001 with today’s safer products. Visit for a free retrofit kit or call (800) 506-4636.

A Shepherd’s Confrontation “Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 13:9 Part 4 of 7 Series

Hatred, Wars, A b o r t i o n , Social Services, Jobs, Pharisees

A b o r t i o n - Let’s talk about men this time. Let’s see…we have philanderer John Edwards facing criminal charges, DNA matches to Strauss-Kahn on a rape attack, Arnold seducing his maid, Senator Ensign disgraced over the affair with the wife of his closest friend. Sex, lies and privilege…a good time for powerful men to keep quiet about abortion…who knows how many they are responsible for… The Clergy are silent (except to condemn women) but looks like the Lord is making a few moves. The more we demand “holiness” the more chances for hypocrisy. Jesus labels “lust” as adultery and without adultery abortions would be few. Where has YOUR mind been lately? Which one of us are not guilty? “Thou shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14 Why haven’t Men made laws to make abortion murder? (They’ve had 30+ years since Roe vs Wade.) Could it be because making laws against abortion would mean BOTH men AND women would be held accountable. Perhaps prison time…can you imagine 50 million men in prison???? What Republican Congressmen are leaving out as they attempt to pass new Abortion laws is the “penalty” for breaking the new law. Is it the Death Penalty as it is with other murder convictions? Keeping company with the wrong kind of people was Jesus forte. When asked about it Jesus responds with “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick…go and learn.” Luke 5:30-32 Jesus came for the despised and disgusting elements of society. It was His Central Ministry. Is it Yours? The Bible tells us there is no forgiveness for the one who does not forgive. It is God’s approval alone which is of ultimate importance, not Congress. Genesis 2:15 tells us Men were given ultimate responsibility for our World. On Judgment Day it just may be Men who will be held accountable for abortion.

Spring Fork Lake moving up list June 8-9, 2011

Location, plenty of fish make it a great spot for anglers

A frustrating — to say nothing of disastrous — meltdown on my mainframe computer’s hard drive made determining the exact date more trouble than it’s worth to you or to me, but it must have been at least a decade ago when I first made mention of Spring Fork Lake in this column. As I recall, my purpose was to speak out in favor of the Missouri Department of Conservation assuming management control of the lake’s fishery — which was already good — and of its public access facilities — which were horrid. Putting the MDC’s plan into action turned out to be a far harder political nut to crack than anyone on the pro side of the issue could have dreamed, but Sedalia’s Public Works Board finally relented, allowing work on a new boat ramp, fishing dock, parking lot and restroom to begin. Meanwhile, I was counting the days until I could begin enjoying the fruits of the MDC’s labors. Work at the lake was completed several years ago, but somehow Spring Fork couldn’t find its way off my “one-of-these-days list. Or at least it couldn’t until one evening earlier this week when a friend of mine and I pulled into the lake’s new parking lot with my boat in tow. A pre-launch checklist at Spring Fork — tiedowns off, drain plug in, tackle and life vests onboard — is standard fare with one important exception. Boats with gasoline motors attached may be used at Spring Fork, but the gas motor must be secured in the out-of-the-water position. Only electric motors can be used for propulsion. Not being able to use the boat’s outboard to launch didn’t present any real problem for me, because I often launch my boat by myself by securing the boat to the trailer by a 20-foot rope and then popping it off the trailer by stopping suddenly when the boat begins to float. Putting the boat back on the trailer, on the other hand, was more of a challenge. I’m sure Spring Fork regulars have walkways bolted to the center beam of their trailers, but I don’t since I ordinarily drive the boat onto the trailer. Fortunately, I have slick trailer bunks and a partner I could trust to keep the winch strap taut while I tight-roped my way back and forth on a slick two-inch beam. But it was what happened between the launch and the recovery that elevated Spring Fork’s status on my fishing location list. In a little more than an hour, we landed a channel cat that threatened the 10-pound mark, a six-pound largemouth bass and several smaller bass and crappie. Add the fact that we were using light-spinning tackle to fish one-sixteenth-ounce jigs beneath floats, and you’ve got the makings for a fun evening. The experience peaked my curiosity, so I decided to learn more about Spring Fork Lake. Much to my surprise, I discovered that Spring Fork, which was first impounded in 1926, is approximately the same age as the Lake of the Ozarks. Various sources give the lake’s surface acreage as

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

93 acres, 115 acres and 124 acres. The acreage of an irregularly shaped body of water is difficult to guess, but based on my country boy acreage-estimating heritage, I believe one of the larger figures is the most likely. Spring Fork Lake’s watershed is estimated at 7,000 acres, which is large for a lake its size. Its watershed-to-acreage ratio helps to keep it supplied with fresh water in everything but the driest of times, but it also makes the lake unusually susceptible to non-point pollution from agricultural chemicals and animal waste. Given that it doesn’t become extreme, this type of pollution can improve a body of water’s ability to support aquatic life. The problem is Spring Fork’s primary purpose is to provide drinking water to Sedalia. Nutrient-rich water is algae-rich water, and algae can create foul tastes and odors that are difficult to remove. As a result, the city of Sedalia and the Department of Natural Resources are working to develop a watershed management plan that the various entities within the watershed can live with. Meanwhile, Spring Fork Lake, which is located only 10 miles south of town, is a recreational resource worthy of any angler’s time. Boats are essential for accessing an overwhelming majority of the lake. There’s hike-in access to some of the shoreline, and the fishing dock is surprisingly productive. The lake is plagued by an overabundance of crappie. Anglers are encouraged to keep their full 30-fish limit regardless of size, but far too few anglers do so. The quality of the crappie fishing won’t get better until they — we — do. The lake’s bass fishery, on the other hand, is being managed to produce trophy-quality angling. The daily limit on all species of black bass is two in the aggregate with an 18-inch minimum length restriction. The overall health of the lake’s catfish population is reflected in the fact that the daily limit on all three species of large catfish (blues, flatheads and channels) is four in the aggregate with no size limit. The aggregate limit for all other fish species is 20 in the aggregate with no minimum size limit. Bluegill are by far the most popular “other fish species, and angling for them can be good. I bought my boat so I could move from place to place without wasting an inordinate amount of time, and trolling from one end of the lake to the other is hard on my nerves. On the other hand, I can make three trips to Spring Fork for what it costs me to make one trip to Truman. That’s a hard fact to ignore.

“My ad representative is concerned about my business...

“Advertising in the Sedalia Democrat publications for the past 12 years has been a key factor in branding Bodyworks Day Spa. Advertising in the Whiteman Warrior has really drawn clients from the base to our business and other businesses in Sedalia. I appreciate the Democrat's revised pricing structure for color advertising, as it is very affordable and invaluable to my business. My ad representative is concerned about my business, not just a commission, and provides me with ads that reflect my personal taste. -Pam Vaught Bodyworks Day Spa & Boutique

In today’s tough economic times, you need every advertising dollar to work harder than ever. With a diverse portfolio of newspaper, online, direct mail and digital marketing products, The Sedalia Democrat can customize a solution with measurable results for your business, just like we do for Bodyworks Day Spa & Boutique.
