It ’s M ay o r ’s P r a y e r B r e ak f a s t , bu t s t u d en t s get spot l ight By Bob Satnan

The Sedalia Kiwanis Club will continue its tradition of honoring local high school students who exhibit strong faith and leadership qualities during its Fourth Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. The breakfast, set for 9 a.m. May 21 at the Christ and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3201 Southwest Blvd., “gives us an opportunity to recognize youth who are not afraid to put their faith on the forefront with their leadership, Mayor Elaine Horn said. Bob Milner, president of the Sedalia Kiwanis Club, said the event was launched four years ago when then-Mayor Bob Wasson had just gotten through his first round of cancer surgeries. “We wanted to honor him and his faith, Milner said. After Wasson died in April 2009, the club decided to continue the breakfast as an annual event “to showcase the youth of our community, Milner said. Chuches nominate a youth member of their congregation who has exhibited leadership, Christian values and community service. Four churches have nominated youth so far, but, “We hope to get the word out so other churches will nominate youth, as well, Milner said.

The club also will present the 2011 William A. Schein Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a local high school senior. This year’s recipient of the $500 award is Hannah Wilson, a senior at Sacred Heart School. Milner said there were 10 “very good applicants for scholarship this year, and that applications for the 2012 scholarship will be available early next year. The event is open to the public and Milner said that attendance has increased every year. Horn said the event’s keynote speaker typically provides inspiration for the youth to help them as they grow into community leaders. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Peter M. Kurowski, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in California, Mo. Kurowski has been a pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod for nearly 33 years and has written a number of books, including “The Seduction of Extremes, “The Cure For Racism, “The Lifelines of Love and “The Real Magic. He also has been a Kiwanis member for 17 years. The breakfast “is an opportunity for the community to join in and help us thank our youth for what they do, Horn said.

• On May 7, 1896, Dr. H.H. Holmes, one of America's first well-known serial killers, is hanged to death in Philadelphia. Although not as well known as Jack the Ripper, authorities discovered the remains of more than 200 victims on Holmes' property. • On May 6, 1937, the airship Hindenburg, the largest dirigible ever built and the pride of Nazi Germany, bursts into flames upon touching its mooring mast in Lakehurst, N.J., killing 36 passengers and crewmembers. The lighter-than-air craft was lifted by highly flammable hydrogen gas.

• On May 5, 1945, in Lakeview, Ore., Mrs. Elsie Mitchell and five neighborhood children are killed while attempting to drag a Japanese balloon out of the woods. Unbeknownst to Mitchell and the children, the balloon was armed, and it exploded soon after they began tampering with it.

• On May 3, 1952, a ski-modified U.S. Air Force C-47 piloted by Lt. Col. Joseph O. Fletcher of Oklahoma and Lt. Col. William P. Benedict of California becomes the first aircraft to land on the North Pole. A moment later, Fletcher climbed out of the plane and walked to the exact geographic North Pole, probably the first person in history to do so.

• On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run to break Mel Ott's National League record for home runs. Mays would finish his career with 660 home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time of his retirement. • On May 2, 1972, after nearly five decades as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, J. Edgar Hoover dies just as the Watergate affair is about to explode onto the national stage. An inquiry later revealed that the FBI had illegally protected President Richard Nixon from investigation. Volunteer makes sure Old Education Tips Glory flies in good shape What Students Need To Know By Latisha Koetting

The military organization that brought the American flags to downtown Sedalia is not about to let those star-spangled banners become tattered, tangled or soiled on their watch. “We’re not going to let them get tattered — it’s just not going to happen. And there’s going to be somebody down there every day making sure they aren’t wrapped, said Larry Stevenson, a member of the 40 & 8. Don Barbour, treasurer of the 40 & 8, and Stevenson are in charge of getting volunteers to unfurl the flags each day. Bill Neff, 79, of Sedalia, is the one of them. Every Thursday afternoon, he stops by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 to pick up a 24-foot-long paint roller which he uses it to unfurl any of 70-plus flags that line Ohio Avenue. Neff started volunteering a couple of months ago because he felt it was something he could do to help. Several of the older members aren’t able to hold their arms over their head for an extended period of time. Neff learned two valuable lessons the first time he did it — bring gloves and wear sunglasses. “First time I did it, I got in the truck and I could hardly drive home. I felt like I had gooseberry briars in my hands. I took hold of the steering wheel and felt stuff sticking me, he said. It turns out little pieces of fiberglass had come off the pole and were all over the palms of his hands. He starts his shift at Main Street and works his way south on Ohio. Then he makes his way back. He said there is a learning curve to controlling the roller, especially when the winds kick up. Sometimes he has to extend the roller 20 feet so it can reach the flag. Then, while holding his arms overhead, it can take numerous attempts to get the flag to start unwrapping. Some are wound so tight, it can take up to 12 attempts to get them unfurled. “We’ve got to keep them old flags aflying, he said. Neff is a Korean War veteran who was

stationed in the Punchbowl area. He was an Army wheel-and-track mechanic who worked on tanks. “I was there when the cease-fire was signed, he said. He remembers the Koreans coming out and throwing their hands up in the air to surrender. “I was glad to get out of there, he said. Sometimes on his route he reflects about his service and what the flag means to him — freedom. He also remembers the men who gave their lives for this country. “I’m sure all those guys overseas are proud every time they see a flag flying, he said. 40 & 8, Voiture 333, wanted to show the patriotism Sedalia has for its country and servicemen and women by bringing the American flags to the downtown. They hope out-of-town visitors will stop to look at them while shopping and dining at local businesses. “The flag means everything to a man that has been in service and we’re (the 40 & 8) all service people, Barbour said. “Not all of us have been in combat, but all of us have served. We believe in the flag. We all know the sacrifices that were put in for that flag. Voiture 333 is very appreciative of city workers who used a cherry picker to raise the flags and remove damaged ones in their spare time. “We could not get the flags up on the poles, if it was not for the men in the cherry pickers, said Tony Gallagher, commander of the 40 & 8. The 40 & 8 appreciates the public for their monetary donations. A separate fund has been created to replace tattered flags, which cost about $18 a piece. Right now they are in the process of changing the connectors on the poles to prevent the flags from wrapping so badly. “Anything we can take care of, we do, said Stevenson. Eventually, there will be 106 flags flying. Neff plans to continue on his Thursday shift for as long as he is able to.

Fishing for bait at grocery store Fresh always better than frozen

I don’t know if it’s the economy, coincidence or a blatantly transparent plot, but in less than a month, I’ve received three e-mails requesting that I revisit the topic of grocery store fish bait. Most grocers don’t advertise that their store shelves and coolers are stocked with an impressive variety of catfish baits. I find this confusing. After all, what purveyor of food fit for human consumption wouldn’t agree that the overall ambiance of his emporium would be improved by the presence of a few good old boys wearing mud-caked gum boots and bib overalls stained with don’t-ask-what? Most catfish anglers enter grocery stores in search of fresh chicken livers. Fresh — not frozen — chicken liver is not only a top choice for channel cats and a better-than-fair bait for blue cats, it may well be the No. 1 bait for hybrid stripers. Some catfish anglers prefer turkey, pork or beef liver, probably in that order. None of these livers are quite as effective as chicken, but they’re much easier to keep on the hook, which may be a deciding factor in heavy current. Many grocery stores carry frozen shrimp labeled as fish bait. This shrimp will catch fish, but they don’t hold a candle to the fresh shrimp carried by some large supermarkets. Human-quality shrimp has another distinct advantage over bait shrimp — it’s a lot less expensive. How well does shrimp work as bait? The North Dakota state record channel cat, which weighed more than 31 pounds, was caught by an angler using fresh shrimp for bait. Liver and shrimp aren’t exactly secret baits, but grocery stores also stock a variety of less known fish baits disguised as people food. The All-American hot dog, for example, is among the top 10 channel cat baits. Hot dogs work well either raw or cooked, so they can be shared with Mr. Whiskers either before or after you pause for shore lunch. Down Truman way, Little Smokie minisausages have become a preferred jug-line bait during the summer months and not just for channel cats. Blue cats have also developed a taste for these spicy morsels. I can’t see why any similar sausage wouldn’t work as well, but that’s a minority opinion. Canned whole kernel corn is almost as universal a fish bait as the more famous angle worm. Putting a kernel or two of corn on a small, short-shanked hook is anything but a secret technique for many anglers who like to catch trout or carp, but corn’s also a good choice for anyone who wants to fill a stringer with channel cats or bluegill. Fish prefer the bargain brands of corn, probably because the kernels tend to be larger and tougher. If you’ll be fishing in still water, buy a couple of cans of corn. Scatter the contents of one

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

in the area you intend to fish. This will attract large numbers of fish to the area, and, sooner or later, one of them will find the kernel of corn with your hook in it. Every serious carp angler has several supersecret dough-bait recipes. Some of these concoctions give the angler an edge when the fishing’s super tough. However, a simple bait made by moistening corn or bran flakes with a tablespoon or two of honey or corn syrup and just enough milk to make a stiff, moldable dough will work every bit as well. Some dough-bait chefs insist on boiling their creations to toughen them, but I seldom bother. Dough baits aren’t just carp-getters. Catfish, trout and bluegill will gobble them up just as eagerly. As long as there are trout to be caught, there will be a market for Velveeta cheese. Any soft cheese would work as well, and those with added herbs and spices probably would be the best of all. As is the case with most grocery store baits, cheese appeals to several species of fish. It’s another of the top 10 choices for channel cats. Most anglers aren’t aware that bluegill are quite fond of pasta. Hollow pasta shapes like elbow macaroni are the easiest to use. Cook them until they’re soft enough to thread onto a hook but not until they’re as tender as recommended for most recipes. Don’t tell the artificial lure-only purists I told you this, but crappie and bass will bite pasta, too. Visit the spice isle before you leave the store. Adding either garlic or anis will greatly improve the fish-attracting ability of any bait, whether that bait came from the grocery store or a more conventional bait shop. Anglers with active imaginations will find many more sources of bait in grocery stores. Here’s the most fantastic example of the potential rewards for not being afraid to experiment I know. The Missouri Alternative Methods record rainbow trout, a 15-pound, 6-ounce lunker, was tempted by a French fry. The ultimate reason grocery stores are such good sources of fish bait is irony in its most classic form. It’s possible to find an open grocery store 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You certainly can’t say that about bait and tackle shops, many of which operate on “banker’s hours.

About The SAT And ACT

(NAPS)—For most high school juniors, the SAT or ACT represents one of the most important stepping-stones between them and admission to the colleges of their choice. Many students consider only one test—either the SAT or ACT— and as a result of geographical predominance and lack of information, they might be missing an opportunity to achieve their optimal score by taking the test best suited to their academic strengths. The Difference Historically, the SAT is the standard test on the West and East Coasts, while the ACT dominates the Midwest and South, but things are beginning to shift as more students realize they have the option of taking both tests. The main difference between the SAT and the ACT is that the latter measures the student’s knowledge learned in high Students should consider both colschool, whereas the SAT tries lege admission tests before taking to determine “innate abili- either. ties. “Most schools accept both the SAT or ACT, except in rare cases, so the test a student decides to take shouldn’t be a deal breaker in admissions, says Jake Becker, academic director at, a collaborative and social learning platform. “When trying to decide which test is right for you, I suggest taking a practice test in each and exploring the requirements of each school that you’re considering applying to. The ACT has four sections (English, Math, Science and Reading) and the SAT has three (Reading, Writing and Math). The SAT recently added Writing to the main exam after the majority of colleges started requiring the SAT Subject Test in Writing (SAT II) as part of the application. The ACT does not require an essay as part of the main test but offers an optional one and it’s suggested that all students take it. The College Board also has SAT II Subject Tests that let students showcase their classroom-based knowledge in subjects such as Physics, Calculus or History, which the ACT does not offer. “Students should consider their strengths and weaknesses in the different subjects available for the SAT II and compare them with the ACT to help decide which would be a better supplement to their application, Becker added. “If a student has taken AP courses that align with one of the SAT Subject Tests, he or she might feel more confident taking that test. If these SAT II tests are daunting and won’t provide great scores, the ACT may be a better choice.

Oxygen Hose Is No Chew Toy By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a 2year-old cat, "Annie," who loves to chew on anything plastic -- particularly my wife's oxygen hose. How can I stop her from doing this? It gets costly. -Dave F., via email

DEAR DAVE: It's not just costly in terms of replacing medical equipment, there's also the risk of Annie having to endure a costly surgery to remove bits of plastic lodged in her digestive tract. However, it can be tough to break a cat of certain habits, and many cats love to gnaw at certain textures and shapes. If possible, you or your wife should come up with ways to move the oxygen hose (or hoses) out of Annie's reach, either by attaching to the chair with a strip or two of medical tape or, if carrying oxygen around, by looping the excess

length of hose around the top of the tank or over one's shoulder. Another method to consider is spraying the exposed length of hose with a cat repellent. Several types are available at pet stores and are used to deter cats from clawing or gnawing things like furniture or other fascinating protuberances. In either case, constant vigilance is still required, as Annie will continue to try to bite the hose if she can get close enough (despite the presence of any stinky spray). When she makes a move toward the hose, distract her with a toy or by calling her. Or, by gently picking her up and placing her in another part of the room, ideally facing a favorite toy or scratching post on which she can take out her energy. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
