Pettis County’s economic climate is improving, with businesses large and small expanding facilities and adding new jobs through the past year. Linda Christle, executive director of Economic Development Sedalia-Pettis County, said she expects “slow but steady growth” to continue throughout the remainder of the year. “I think we have been fortunate here in that many of our companies have been able to sustain themselves through a couple tough years, and some have even grown. I think we will see that accelerate through the year — I think all indicators point to that,” Christle said. During its annual board meeting in January, Christle said EDPSC submitted prospect proposals to four companies considering relocating or expanding into the county that were referred by the state Department of Economic Development and Missouri Partnership.

The quarterly report also highlighted recent growth in local businesses. Christle said Blue Demon Co., Orion Print Finishing, Honu Photography and Screen Printing and Black Dawn Armory each announced expansion projects in the last quarter of 2010. “We have a lot of small companies we’re working with that are growing. They are all important and adding to our economy,” Christle stated. According to the Missouri Economic Research and

Information Center (MERIC) website (missourieconomy.org), a wide array of businesses in the 13-county West Central Region, which includes Pettis, saw modest growth

in the third quarter of 2010. Manufacturing firms posted the biggest gains, with 7 percent growth over the previous year. February unemployment numbers remained high at

9.6 percent, falling from 9.8 percent in January as area employers reduced seasonal staff. Of the 20,093 who comprise the county’s civilian work force, 1,919 people were unemployed. Those numbers were slightly higher than the seasonally-adjusted rate of 9.4 percent statewide, but were a full percentage point lower than the 10.6 percent unemployment rate for the West Central Region. The regional average wage was $543 per week in the third quarter of 2010. The improving economy, buoyed by $21.79 million in Federal Recovery Zone bonds, helped fuel expansion at Sedalia-based ProEnergy Services, which began work on an industrial

turbine repair shop, office and warehouse, all located on 52 acres of property adjacent to its headquarters. Following the project’s announcement last June, Chris Stratton, ProEnergy chief financial officer, said the expansion would allow the company to create an “assembly-line” for work on commercial natural gas turbines used to generate electricity. Stratton said the turbines are heavy pieces of equipment and the company currently pays a considerable amount to transport the turbines between its maintenance facility in Sedalia and additional space the company leases near Kansas City International Airport. “This is a very ambitious expansion of the company’s

footprint in Sedalia,” Stratton said. The company expected the project to be completed in six to 12 months and estimates it will add at least 100 jobs at the Sedalia facility. Retiring baby boomers and increased demand for cancer and cardiovascular treatment also helped propel projects at Bothwell Regional Health Center. BRHC wrapped up its capital campaign in October with $3.35 million in contributions — just shy of its goal of $3.5 million. The donations will help fund the construction of the $14 million Canon Centers for Cancer and Cardiovascular Care, slated

to open in fall of 2011, which will provide expanded and advanced care for cancer and heart patients in Pettis and Benton counties. BRHC Marketing Director Lisa Church said work on the new center should be completed this fall, and will be followed by a renovation of the hospital’s existing cancer unit. The entire project should wrap up in early 2012. The hospital is also looking at a late-summer completion date for its $8.2 million, three-story Bothwell Healing Arts Center on Winchester Drive. The bank was established over 100 years ago in 1891, by a group of progressive Smithton citizens and named it The Smithton Bank. This bank was established on the principal that people mattered and service made the difference. This tradition was continued by Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Robinson when they purchased the bank in 1971. Bothwell Regional Health Center

Bothwell Regional Health Center began treating cancer patients on its new linear accelerator in mid-February. The $2.7 million linear accelerator, which provides radiation therapy, is one of the first steps in improving cancer treatment services for the

community. Another major step is the construction of the Canon Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Care on the east side of the hospital. The two-story, 15,000square-foot addition, which will be completed this fall, will include new chemotherapy treatment areas, new reception and exam areas, an outside therapy garden, and consolidation of cardiovascular services to a centralized location. Additional renovation to the space these programs currently occupy is expected to be complete in January 2012. Women’s health services also have been greatly enhanced with a $1.1 million renovation to Bothwell’s Women’s Health Unit.

Bothwell is in the final phase of the project, which includes two new and two renovated labor-delivery-recovery rooms and updates to the unit’s 18 private patient rooms. Construction is also expected to be complete this fall on the Bothwell Healing Arts Center, a medical office building in west Sedalia. The center will offer more comfortable and private space for patients of Dr. Abraham Azan, Dr. David Oberkrom, Dr. William Smith and Dr. Amy Thompson with Bothwell OB/GYN Associates. Missouri Heart Center, the practice of Dr. Henry Marquez, also will be located in the new building. The Healing Arts Center,

which adjoins the Bothwell Diagnostic Center, is an integral component in recruiting new physicians to the area. Another component of improving health-care for the community was Bothwell’s addition of a new 1.0 Tesla open MRI at the Diagnostic Center. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment, one of the most powerful open MRIs in the region, produces images with more clarity for better detection and diagnosis in half the time.

Coldwell Banker Monsees Realty

Coldwell Banker Monsees Realty was founded in June 1960 by my father Dick Monsees, who was one of the top farm salesmen in Pettis County for many years. My brother Hank Monsees joined the team in 1964 after graduation from Missouri University that same year. Finally I joined the firm in August 1969 and full time in January 1970 after graduation from the Missouri University School of Business. In October 1983, Monsees Realty joined the ERA national real estate franchise and in February 1995 became a member of Coldwell Banker, the premier real estate organization in the world. Based on the principles of honesty, integrity, and service, Coldwell Banker Monsees Realty is celebrating its 51st year in business and has been Sedalia’s #1 home seller since 1990. We attribute our success to our professional team of agents & staff, who give the best service in the industry. As always, if it’s real estate, it’s Coldwell Banker Monsees Realty. Advantage Metals Recycling (AMR) buys scrap metal from companies and individuals to be recycled by a steel mill, foundry or smelter for eventual use in another product. The AMR Sedalia recycling center buys common household ferrous and nonferrous scrap metals items like aluminum cans, appliances, lawn furniture, lawn mowers,

pots and pans, home siding, aluminum windows, stainless steel, and copper or brass plumbing fixtures, faucets and fittings. Customers are paid on site for their scrap metal. Check out our scrap metal facility and make money as you recycle, rather than having to pay a waste management fee for disposal at a local landfill. According to Scott Tuttle, AMR Sedalia Plant Manager, “We make it convenient to drop off any ferrous or nonferrous scrap, and we pay top dollar for scrap metal recycled at our facility. This is a great way for community members to make money, while helping to preserve and protect the environment.” Advantage Metals Recycling is the combination of several businesses that have been in operation from 30 – 60 years, with 14 locations in Kansas and Missouri. It’s easy to sell AMR your scrap. Drive in to our yard, we’ll weigh your scrap using our state of the art scales, unload, and get cash for your scrap quickly. Visit us on N. Iron, off W. From the first twowheeled utility trailer developed by William R. Parkhurst in a rented two car garage at Crown Hill in 1946, Parkhurst Manufacturing expanded to a multi million dollar sales volume company. It is now housed in a 151,000 square foot facility, operated by the grandson of its founder, Rob

Parkhurst and is celebrating 65 years in business. In addition to our Sedalia manufacturing location, Parkhurst has a warehouse in Spokane, Washington and in Indianapolis, Indiana. Parkhurst builds a full line of platform truck bodies, including grain, stakeless grain, contractor, landscape, stake rack, gooseneck and lumber. Also manufactured are conversion hoist and 2 thru 4 yard dump bodies. We continue to manufacture trailers marketed to the rental industry. These trailers are built to tough standards to withstand the abuse that comes from rental use. Locally, companies in the Sedalia and surrounding areas use our tool & die, fabrication and welding departments for their special needs and we are always pleased when we can provide fabrication and welding services to individuals in our community.
