Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicle family

Jaguar Land Rover’s range of armoured vehicle solutions covers a spectrum of requirements that cannot be matched by any other original equipment manufacturer. They cover needs that range from head-of-state level to those of key workers operating in hostile environments. Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicle range comprises four models: the XJ Sentinel, Range Rover Sentinel, Discovery Sentinel and Defender. In their standard soft-skinned versions each has forged an enviable reputation for style, performance, refinement and reliability. Other OEMs may have luxury vehicles, or SUVs, or full off-roaders, but only Jaguar Land Rover has the expertise in all these areas to offer a seamless range of armoured vehicle solutions to match any requirement. Jaguar Land Rover has created these vehicles through exhaustive development to offer levels of protection equal to or exceeding those of the

2012

competition, and which are fully tested and certificated to internationally recognised standards. At the same time, the legendary comfort and driveability offered by Jaguar Land Rover’s soft-skinned vehicles has been maintained, while the armoured vehicles have been designed so that they are virtually indistinguishable from the standard models. XJ Sentinel Leading the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range is the XJ Sentinel limousine. Jaguar Land Rover leveraged its considerable experience in the armoured vehicle arena to produce a version of the long wheelbase XJ Portfolio that is tailored for use by heads-of-state and high-ranking ministers, in scenarios where it is the VVIP that drives the risk. XJ Sentinel is heavily armoured, offering certificated ballistic protection to the B7 level (B7- for the armoured glass), and blast protection against the equivalent of 15 kg TNT detonated close to the vehicle. The

suspension has been uprated to cater for the additional weight of the armour, and inside the vehicle retains the standard level of luxury that provides the rear-seat occupants with a full metre of legroom, and a range of options. One major advantage of the XJ Sentinel is that it offers an exceptional 500-kilogram payload, more than sufficient for four occupants and their luggage, and any additional security equipment that may be required. Range Rover Sentinel Based on the Vogue model, the Range Rover Sentinel SUV is aimed at a variety of customers, such as state government and ambassadors, and for VVIPs requiring a level of rough-road capability. In terms of protection the Range Rover is certificated to B6+ level against ballistic threats, offers side protection against 15-kg TNT blasts, and underfloor protection that can withstand grenade attacks. As with the other members of the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range, the Range Rover Sentinel has run-flat tyres complete with warning system (where local legislation allows) and incorporates many of the advanced systems of the soft-skinned vehicle. It has a number of security options available, also appli2.2-litre diesel powertrain for Defender

cable to other members of the range, such as anti-tamper exhaust, opening driver’s window, vision assist and intercom. An auxiliary battery is fitted to provide additional power for specialist equipment such as communications, and there are options for covert headlight flash, blue lights and sirens, and under-bonnet fire suppression. The vehicle was re-tested to EC whole vehicle type approved (ECWVTA) and has improved GVW which creates a payload increase of 455kg. Discovery Sentinel Jaguar Land Rover is the only OEM to offer a fully certificated armoured vehicle that has off-road capability in the shape of the Discovery Sentinel. Based on the Discovery SE, the armoured model provides the same B6 levels of protection as the Range Rover Sentinel. It is offered with both short and long armoured cells, the latter featuring armour that projects into the cargo bay at the rear. Armoured Discovery is aimed at two principal markets: VIP protection and as a support vehicle. In the former it offers a cost-effective vehicle for ambassadors or similar, while its offroad capability allows it to provide protected transport when VIPs visit areas where roads are in a poor state or are non-existent. In its second role the Armoured Discovery is proposed as a perfect platform for police and security organisations operating in the VIP support role, using the discreet Discovery to escort the primary vehicle. The cabin of the Discovery can be configured to meet a variety of needs, with options covering different seating options, additional power harnesses and the ability to mount special equipment. Combined with the 500-kilogram payload available in the short-cell version and additional battery option, this versatility allows it to carry a range of support equipment, such as communications and medical kit. In the short-cell version the vehicle can be fitted with an escape hatch in the rear of the cell, allowing occupants to

Armoured Defender With over two million vehicles produced and six decades of experience, nothing comes close to the legendary Defender when it comes to taking on, and beating, some of the toughest offroad terrain. Unlike many of its competitors, the Defender has permanent four-wheel drive with the centre differential distributing torque evenly between the front and rear axles to give optimum all-weather performance on and off-road. In conjunction with a Land Rover Approved Vehicle Modifier (AVM), Jaguar Land Rover has now introduced a fully factory-approved Armoured Defender, certificated to B6 standard and with underfloor grenade protection. The armour kit works within the normal payload parameters of the standard Defender, but still allows the vehicle to carry up to seven passengers, a capability unmatched by any competitor at its price level. The Armoured Defender is aimed mainly at organisations such as NGOs and oil/mining companies that operate in harsh environments with potential security risks. In 2011 the baseline Defender underwent a significant update, at the heart of which is the installation of a 2.2-litre Ford Puma diesel engine. Although the new engine is smaller in capacity than the previous 2.4-litre unit, it is able to maintain the power and torque attributes that are key to the Defender’s industry-leading performance, as well as boosting maximum speed from 132 to 145 km/h. Adoption of the new engine allows the Defender to fully comply with Euro Level 5 emission regulations for N1 class vehicles, which come into force in 2012. To meet these requirements the powertrain incorporates a diesel particulate filter, with both passive and active regeneration technology, to greatly reduce soot levels. Speed limiter options are now available (at 90, 113 and 120 km/h) that can be set in the factory but removed in service at a later date if required. This facility is aimed at fleets looking to control fuel economy and promote safety. Also new are further options for trim and interior.

Armoured protection

Comprehensive approach Jaguar Land Rover’s comprehensive design and development approach to its armoured vehicles offers significant benefits to the customers. By using a globally-renowned armour expert and clever design, the Jaguar Land Rover armoured cell provides better all-round protection than many of its rivals. The steel cell itself requires several welds that, if not executed properly, can compromise the overall protection offered. Jaguar Land Rover, Centigon and RMA employ advanced technologies and highly-skilled technicians to help ensure that every weld maintains the total integrity of the cell. Jaguar Land Rover has examined in detail every potential weak-spot of the armoured cell, and designed in elements to help overcome any possible degradation in protection. Any gaps in the cell envelope, such as those caused by doors, are carefully engineered to a minimum size, and protected by overlapping armoured segments to help maintain overall protection. Fuel tanks are self-sealing or armoured. In terms of certification this means

that Jaguar Land Rover armoured vehicles can be validated to protection levels as a vehicle in its entirety. Other vehicle armourers may be able to offer components that meet the stipulated requirements, but the vehicle as a whole may fail due to weakspots, and large and inadequately protected gaps, due to their inability to engineer to certification standard. Multi-threat protection Traditionally vehicle armourers have concerned themselves only with the ballistic threat posed by small arms, but in today’s world other threats have become more prevalent. As well as the ability to help protect occupants against standard rounds from pistols or rifles, Jaguar Land Rover vehicles offer protection against other weapons, including armour-piercing rounds. Additionally, in recognition of a growth in roadside IEDs and suicidetype attacks, the Jaguar Land Rover armoured range incorporates sideblast protection, and an armoured floorpan designed to resist grenade attacks. Together these features provide enhanced security and reassurance for the occupants.

Independent testing All of Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles are subjected to exhaustive tests by independent agencies, to provide internationally-recognised certification. In terms of protection the vehicles are certificated by QinetiQ, the UK defence technology and security company that grew out of the UK’s Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. As such, QinetiQ is globally respected as an organisation with unmatched experience in the testing and validation of products, systems and new technologies, and in verifying their compliance with standards and regulations. In order to gain international certification, vehiclesmust be subjected to a variety of ballistic and blast tests, including those aimed at any perceived weakspots. The results for Jaguar Land Rover vehicles meet the UK’s B6 level (roughly equivalent to the European VR7 standard) for the Range Rover, Discovery and Defender, and B7 level in the case of the XJ Sentinel. In addition to protection tests, Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles have also been scrutinised in terms of performance and driving dynamics by a number of government test agencies, and have met or exceeded the most stringent requirements.

Engineering without compromise

Jaguar Land Rover’s approach to the armouring of its range has produced a family of fully certificated, fully engineered vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover’s factoryapproved vehicles are considered as true armoured vehicles, whereas the products of some competitors could be described as vehicles that are armoured. In today’s uncertain world the protection of VVIPs and key personnel is increasingly important. Jaguar Land Rover recognises this with its armoured range, which has been engineered to meet not only the highest levels of security, but also to maintain the superior handling necessary to help avoid the vehicle itself becoming a danger to its occupants.

2012

A vehicle that is armoured… Imagine the scenario: an assassination attempt has been foiled by a vehicle’s armour protection. The driver’s first instinct is to whisk his important passengers away from the scene as fast as possible. As the car speeds away the driver turns the wheel to take a bend, but the car flips over and rolls. The VIPs may have

survived a potential assassin’s bullets, but not the crash that followed. Sadly, that scenario is all too possible when travelling in a car that has not been fully engineered to take into account the extra weight and effects of armouring. …or a true armoured vehicle By contrast, Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicles have been developed, recalibrated, tweaked and teased though hours of testing and retesting to ensure that they exhibit similar road-holding, agility and poise enjoyed by their soft-skinned counterparts. Jaguar Land Rover has engineered

Engineering without compromise

every last detail of its armoured vehicles to take into account the effects of armour. To offset the effect of the additional weight of armour protection on vehicle performance, air springs and anti-rollbars are uprated, and dampers are tuned to optimise ride and handling. Heavy-duty Alcon disc brakes with multi-pot callipers are also fitted, while stability control system software has been designed to help keep the driver protected under a multitude of driving conditions. The vehicle’s many electronic control units are optimised to take into account any extra burden placed on their functions by differing weights and systems. The application of these measures helps the vehicle to be as stable as its soft-skinned counterpart.

Stringent testing All aspects of the vehicles’s structure, dynamics and performance are thoroughly tested in its armoured configuration, particularly with regard to some of the occupational hazards that the vehicle may encounter, such as the need to ram other vehicles or obstructions that may hinder a safe escape from a hazardous situation. A full series of crash tests has been undertaken with the armoured vehicles to help ensure that such impacts can be absorbed adequately by the structure, especially with regard to the integrity of the armoured cell, and the adequacy of the front crumple zone to absorb impact forces. Vehicles are repeatedly driven at high speed into kerbs, and are subjected to a rigorous series of maximum-effort brake tests to ensure that there is no brake-fade through repeated violent application. Bespoke engineering All Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles are produced to match the exact specifications of the customer. These not only include operational requirements, such as the provision of various driving options or specialised communications equipment, but also reflect local regulations and infrastructure. For instance, radios can be calibrated to offer nationally-specific frequency bands, while some countries do not

allow tyre pressure monitoring systems as they interfere with other communications. Armoured Sales is a separate division within the Jaguar Land Rover business, and is dedicated to identifying such details, no matter how large or small, and fully meeting

such needs in a discreet manner. As well as its all-embracing range of fully tested vehicles, it brings to the table many years of experience gained in the provision of armoured vehicles to discerning customers around the world.

Comfort and technology

Sentinel and Discovery Sentinel. An extensive range of colour and trims are available. The Defender can also be fitted to various trim levels, including County and SE, and now has additional options, including Comfort Pack (air conditioning, CD player), Interior Pack (carpet flooring, high-line cubby, part-leather seats and leather steering wheel), Leather Pack (seats and steering wheel) and Exterior Pack (Brunel grille and headlamp surrounds, body-coloured roof and wheel arches, and side-runners).

While customers are buying an armoured vehicle for protection first and foremost, they are also buying a Jaguar or Land Rover, marques renowned for technical innovation and comfort. Although there are a small number of standard soft-skin options that are not available to the armoured range – by virtue of the cell configuration itself – the vehicles nevertheless come with a range of features that greatly enhance comfort for the occupants and the driving experience. For instance, the Discovery Sentinel has the full range of off-road assist features of the standard vehicle, such as the Terrain Response select function that alters the vehicle automatically to tackle a variety of surfaces, such as tarmac, ruts, grass, mud, snow or sand. Anti-stall and automatic hill descent features are also fitted to the off-roaders, allowing the vehicles to tackle very steep slopes in full safety. In terms of comfort the armoured range offers an interior space that is virtually indistinguishable from that of the soft-skin cars, with the accent on luxury in the XJ Sentinel, Range Rover

Supporting the customer at every step Jaguar Land Rover is fully committed to the support of its customers throughout the life of the vehicle, from the consultation process during ordering to a comprehensive after-sales package. When a customer chooses Jaguar Land Rover they can rest assured that every aspect of their ownership has been covered, and that their vehicle will not let them down when it matters most. A dedicated security consultant works closely with the customer during the sales process, to ensure that their full requirements are met. A wide range of specialised optional security and vehicle features are available, which can be tailored to meet individual requirements. Moreover, each vehicle is fully optimised for the country or region in which it is intended to be employed. Driver training While the physical protection of VIPs is important, it can also be greatly enhanced by fully-trained drivers, who can expertly handle the vehicle in the most tense of situations.

To provide a complete package of vehicle and driver, Jaguar Land Rover offers a comprehensive range of driver training programmes, which can be tailored to suit customer requirements. Experienced instructors not only provide training in a range of defensive driving skills, but also instruction in how to handle the armoured vehicles, which by their nature are heavier than their ‘softskinned’ counterparts. After-sales service Jaguar Land Rover’s armoured vehicles have been carefully designed so that the baseline vehicle can be serviced and repaired within the global Jaguar Land Rover dealership programme, using standard diagnostic equipment. Vehicles come with a full three-year, 50,000-mile warranty. Servicing and repair of the armour protection is carried out when required by a team of dedicated specialists, working on site. Jaguar Land Rover also provides a number of scheduled visits per year by a dedicated technician to assist with vehicle familiarisation and servicing. Protection without compromise Combined with the company’s expertise and long experience in offroad vehicles, armoured cars and luxury transport, the Jaguar Land Rover customer support programme provides a complete security solution for the protection of key personnel

against a range of threats. No other company offers the breadth of solutions available, and none can match the performance – both in terms of protection and driveability – offered by the Jaguar Land Rover armoured family across a wide spectrum of operational environments. By using the best technology, thoroughly tested and certificated to meet the most stringent standards, Jaguar Land Rover is dedicated to providing the best possible protection for key personnel, while ensuring that comfort is maintained and that cost is competitive.

Costing the Defence Cyber Threat This article, written by Paul Jones, Managing Director of Arke Ltd, contains views and opinions based on his experience in delivering an Open Systems Architectures Value for Money framework and Cost Modelling solution for evaluating high integrity Command, Control, Communications and Computer (C4) systems. This article examines the impact of Cyber Threat in a future Defence equipment arena. Cyber Threat and Defence Procurement As one of the outcomes of its Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2010 the Government put in place a £650 million, fouryear National Cyber Security Programme (NCSP). This funding, intended to transform the Government’s response to cyber threats, has been allocated to those departments and agencies that have key roles to play. Subsequently, in 2011 the UK Government published a white paper ‘The UK Cyber Security Strategy’ which set out the UK strategy for ‘Protecting and promoting the UK in a digital world’. The plans and programmes to deliver the objectives are ‘work in progress’ and some commentators are already beginning to question the wisdom of government sponsorship and leadership of a topic in which the politicians have only a marginal understanding of the long term technical and commercial implications; the allocation of only £650m is possibly the measure of this. Put simply, the cyber threat canvas may be too big, too diverse and too dynamic for individual UK Defence and Other Government Departments (OGD) to develop a unified long term UK strategy. For UK defence there are two major challenges, • Operational Security – how does Defence ensure its freedom to operate is not eroded by information and communications attack both now and in the future? • How does the defence supply chain prevent covert and on-going cyber invasion of its products and services?

2013

To deliver both of these factors requires a significant change both in the way that Defence specifies its requirements, and the manner in which defence industry procures and guarantees its hardware and software performance . Further, the corresponding requirement for UK industry to produce proven cyber-proof defence products will naturally lead to a greater attention focus from those nations and individuals that would benefit from defeating the capability. The Current Defence Position From a Defence Procurement perspective the increasing use of Commercial ‘Off the Shelf’ (COTS) hardware and software products, particularly those sourced from known cyber threat active nations may mean that existing ‘known- unknown’ threats may already be present. Given that most Defence equipment has an in-service life of around 25 years, future Cyber threat reduction must form part of the through life maintenance strategy; a long term commitment with no reversionary modes. A Change in the Commercial Landscape For new systems the incorporation of legally binding cyber proof information/communications security should become a necessary part of the User Requirement and the System Specification. This shift towards security based procurement is likely to drive the need for a new risk based business model, requiring MoD investment in industrial security processes that are flowed down the entire supply chain and potentially across international boundaries. From a future Defence Procurement standpoint a prescribed and auditable counter cyber capability in the supply chain will increase risk and hence costs.

These costs must be

understood by both the procurement agencies and government early to avoid future cost surprises and consequential adverse public scrutiny.

The Need for International Standards If the UK adopts a national strategy for addressing cyber-attack and its elimination how can it ensure the integrity and performance of a Defence system that is in part procured from allies and partner nations is not compromised? This problem is analogous to a manufacturing production quality assurance and control system. If you do not specify the performance of the material and set strict bounds in the way in which it is measured, accepted and used (fitness for purpose, materials specification, manufacturing tolerances, on-going control procedures and accreditation control) then the performance of the item and the system boundary in which it performs cannot be guaranteed. The Role of Research Defence and Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has been established as the visionary Centre for MoD Cyber and Influence Activities research; it is working across government to support the National Cyber-security Strategy to both exploit collaborative opportunities, and to avoid duplication of effort. With its links to government departments, academia and industry, Dstl is well placed to provide a central role in the development of a UK national cyber security portfolio of measures. However, it traditionally lacks the necessary core skills sets to develop a future commercial ‘risk based’ contracting model. Further the development of internationally accepted counter cyber quality standards is a challenge in which Dstl might have only a limited influence. The Role of Open Systems Current initiatives within the MoD such as Open Systems Architecture (OSA) may provide a contribution to a future countercyber framework by which a system’s lifecycle is assessed not just on current and future military capability grounds but by the degree in which they can resist or avoid future cyber threat. A recently

developed Dstl Whole Life Cost Model MOSAIC (Modular Open Systems Architecture Integrated Cost) has been designed to be expandable and could provide the ability to assess the advantages and disadvantages of not just embracing future changes in military threat and commercial reality but also cyber threat as part of a Whole Life investment approach. Conclusions The UK, through its defence research, engineering and manufacturing

communications organisations has the intellectual horsepower, facilities and methods and opportunity to develop, produce and sustain cyber-proof systems.

The introduction of standards

for measuring and controlling all aspects of the specification, engineering and production of ‘cyber resistant’ systems linked to risk based commercial contracting conditions will provide the glue by which industry, government and the UK population can mutually benefit. However, successful government support for the development of safe, secure and resilient systems has to be unequivocal. Costs must inevitably rise and it is this message that needs to be relayed to government to maintain an informed strategy and financial commitment. global scientific community for major pharmaceutical, industrial and chemical companies.

Energy production in the human body is a complex process. In simple terms, we require food and water in order to produce energy. Water is especially essential as the liver needs water to metabolise glycogen into usable energy. The slightest loss of water makes us feel lethargic and performance levels will ultimately drop.

As a company, Electrothermal have long recognised the importance of maintaining fluid and nutritional intakes of military personnel. With this in mind, the company have designed, manufactured and

Dehydration can have catastrophic effects. Roughly, 1% of bodyweight lost through dehydration can result in a corresponding 5% drop in performance; a 4-5% dehydration rate can result in performance dropping by 20-30%; and fluid loss of 9-12% can be fatal.

Whilst, the British Army MAN trucks are equipped with RAK 15/30 units, which have proved highly beneficial in the recent war in Afghanistan; allowing vehicles to stay on the move, consequently meaning that the onboard crew are less vulnerable to attacks from insurgent groups. Electrothermal’s latest innovation, the Chiller Crockpot C-VMV, launched in Spring 2013, is the first product in the world to both heat and cool water under combat conditions, keeping troops hydrated with safe water in the harshest terrains. Utilising the company’s RAK 15H/C technology, the unit features all the benefits of the RAK 15/30 coupled with the additional benefit of cooling. The Chiller Crockpot was trialled on military vehicles in 2012 with great success. The new portable RAK 15H/C technology is the world’s first commercially available water ration heater that also provides cooled water on demand. A product which is robust and unique in design, the RAK 15 H/C provides hot or cold water for a five person crew of an armoured vehicle, which can be used for washing or heating drinks and ration packs within twenty minutes of switching on. The unit then has the capability to keep its contents warm for over four hours after switch-off. For heating properties, the RAK 15H/C features low and high temperature settings, as well as built-in controls. The unit heats at

66-71°Cm on LO setting and 82-88°C on HI. The robust, stainless steel outer casing is water-tight resulting in steam produced being retained within the RAK’s interior. Electrothermal’s range of RAK ration heaters/coolers are designed to withstand the rigours of modern conflict and meet Military standard specifications such as MIL-PRF-444660. The units are also individually certified for food heating. Each of the revolutionary RAK units can connect via standard military connectors to auxiliary power supplies of up to 24 volts DC in armoured and soft-skinned vehicles. When in use, the outside of the RAK unit remains cool to touch and features a non-spill relief system ensuring safe transit. Another innovative feature of the RAK units is the unique low voltage capability that they possess. Thus creating a low thermal signature, which is critically important for maintaining discretion during military operations. Quality is not just a concept of Electrothermal, the forwardthinking company live and work by the values of integrity, focus, commitment and innovation. It, therefore comes as no surprise that the company is today, the approved supplier for the US, UK and many other armies across the world. Airnesco is a group of companies formed in 1947 that specialises in the design and manufacture of a complete range of unique compressed air operated products to cover most tube and plant cleaning applications.

to be combining our efforts at upcoming trade shows such as DSEi 13, where we will have a combined presence and exhibition booth.”

In the late 1990’s owing to Airnesco’s industrial presence as one of the leading manufacturers of tube cleaning equipment, the company was approached by the Royal Navy and the British Army in order to look at rationalising the cleaning of Artillery and Shipborne weapon systems. As the concept developed it eventually spawned the Airnesco Bore Cleaning System (BCS) for all large calibre weapon systems ranging from 25mm up to and including 203mm.

The Otis cleaning system – Ripcord® - a convenient tool which cleans from Breech-to-Muzzle® in one quick and easy process. Ripcord® is heat resistant of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit and equipped with 8-32 threaded ends to fit all Otis cleaning components.

Commenting on the evolution of the company, Business Development Manager for Defence and Aerospace, Timothy Moore, said: “Airnesco’s initial successes were naturally with the Royal Navy and the British Army and since then the business model has developed into a thriving multinational business servicing customers all over the globe. The Defence side of Airnesco is now the most profitable side of the business and ensures that Airnesco is firmly rooted within the sector as the globe’s number one choice of Large Calibre Weapon Cleaning products.” “Despite these successes the product line has not stood still and we at Airnesco are constantly striving to make a necessary yet tedious task much easier to achieve with less manpower, less time and less impact on the ever constrained defence budget.” Tim explained. In addition to developing new product lines, it is imperative that an organisation such as Airnesco thinks from a strategic perspective and DSEi 2013 sees the announcement of a Global Strategic Alliance with Otis Technologies Inc. Otis Technology is the world leader in small arms and weapons maintenance, while Airnesco supplies the most advanced large bore weapons cleaning systems available. The Otis Technology Breech-to-Muzzle® Cleaning System is widely regarded by experts as the most advanced gun cleaning system in the world. It offers many gun cleaning advancements and refinements developed for the military and competitive marksmen and hunters. The aim of this Global Strategic Alliance is to cement both organisations reputations within the Defence Sector but more importantly add value in becoming a single source provider for an all arms maintenance solution. Large or small is now not a consideration. “Our strategic alliance with Airnesco represents the coming together of two companies that are leaders in our field,” remarks Ed Collins, General Manager - Foreign Military Sales at Otis Technology. He continues, “With our different areas of expertise, Otis and Airnesco can now offer a single source for military maintenance solutions ranging from .17 caliber to 155mm weapons and everything in between.” Timothy Moore comments, “We are truly pleased to partner with Otis Technology. This strategic alliance will benefit our customers by providing a single point of contact in weapons cleaning. Airnesco and Otis are proud

B.O.N.E.® MSR/AR owners know the importance of a clean bolt and bolt carrier group where carbon and fouling can build up, causing jams and malfunctions. The B.O.N.E.® tool has been specifically designed to clean the bolt carrier assembly area of .223 cal/5.56mm rifles. During the DSEi event in 2013, Airnesco will also be presenting their new range of expanding brushes, which have been specifically designed for maintaining the chamber of a weapon system. Airnesco is a ISO9001 organisation and continues to test and develop their products in conjunction with the British Army and Royal Navy. However, in addition the company still test equipment and develop a lot of our equipment in conjunction with the British Army and Royal Navy. The genesis of the equipment is fundamentally the same; the unique selling point is that Airnesco have the ability to tailor maintenance systems to the exact requirements expressed by the customer at a relatively low price point. Airnesco see the globe as the marketplace, what differentiates specific markets is the pace at which they move.

“The Airnesco Product range is unique in respect to the fact that even in the downturn customers with ever shrinking budgets will always have to use maintenance equipment in order to ensure that their capital intensive equipment is kept serviceable and capable of delivering the effect required of it. This is reflected not only in the Defence and Aerospace market but within our Commercial and Industrial division” Timothy explained. “The key to our Global Strategy is that of establishing partnerships across the globe, this strategy has seen ever increasing productivity and output in the last 5 years and as markets recover these partnerships set the conditions for stable growth for Airnesco. One of our key efforts with regard to this one of our key efforts is to give the procurement manager a straightforward clear way of purchasing and getting the procured equipment to those who require it. This concept is already enshrined within our existing partnerships but Airnesco are constantly striving to add value at every level.” “Couple this with the combined belief that the Airnesco product line and service has to constantly evolve in tune with the needs of the customer” Timothy continued, “in recognising this fact and in order to cement our credibility within an ever competitive marketplace we need to offer innovative thinking as well as ingenious and outstanding equipment. A great example of this is our Strategic Partnership with Otis Technologies Ltd.” “The pillars of this relationship are still focused on providing the best equipment capable of completing the task at the right price point, but to make life easier for the procurement manager, they can now come to us for all their weapon maintenance needs, therefore giving the customer the “One Stop” solution.” Asked how Airnesco would be moving forward as a company further into the future, Tim Moore explained: “Airnesco’s has carved up our global market into 7 distinct territories North America and Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Far East and finally South America and Africa.”

“The first 5 years of my tenure with the company has seen a distinct focus on North America, the Middle East and Far East, it is my belief that we are starting to hit critical mass in all those areas despite the slow growth within the North American economy. This has been achieved by a lot of hard work by all concerned, however the obstacles of Sequestration will undoubtedly pose some serious challenges but with the work that has been applied will hopefully see Airnesco taking increasing market share of this region.” “With that being said there is a constant desire to strive and we are finding ourselves actively seeking business across the globe.” From investing in Airnesco’s products, Military Organisations can effectively seek to stretch their tightened budgets and reductions in manpower, whilst still projecting global reach and influence. “The consistent message that we receive from all Militaries is how can we make the most of a smaller manpower pool and a tighter budget as well as achieving the effect demanded by our Government” Tim explained. “It is my belief that with the Airnesco product we can achieve these factors with a very small capital expenditure.” “This is demonstrated across the International Market, we can clearly demonstrate a reduction in manpower & time, which ultimately gives commanders on the ground increased flexibility with their resources. Within Junior Command, the one resource that he/she is always short of is time and, if a Commander can win back that time through a rationalisation of maintenance; the soldier and commander benefit in numerous ways; be it in rest, training or preparation for Mission Specific activity.” “It is my belief that Militaries across the globe have to rely on technology and equipment that was traditionally the preserve of manpower in order to realise the intent of their civilian masters” he concluded. 2013

Cutting-edge Digital Intelligence & Evidence Gathering Equipment Secures Top Award for RADIO TACTICS Throughout the year, the Directors at the Security Industry E-Mag select organisations that have best demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of their clients. Therefore, in line with this philosophy, it gives us pleasure to announce RADIO TACTICS has been selected to receive the PRODUCT INNOVATION AWARD 2013, a totally independent Award Programme that is recognised both in this country and abroad. Radio Tactics were chosen for their commitment to solutions supporting the fight against crime and terrorist threats. The Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their particular field. Security Industry E-Mag is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its readers, but also by a wider audience. Not every organisation can walk away with one of these accolades, that have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all

emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace. The market for high tech digital intelligence and evidence gathering equipment has evolved considerably due to the proliferation of communications-based mobile applications and standardised operating systems. This places greater strain on crime prevention and government agencies as they battle with this increased complexity and the need to adapt to new digital devices, applications and systems. With the rapid growth in the use of smartphones and associated ‘Apps’ Radio Tactics have developed a leading position in the provision of dedicated decoders for the most popular ‘Apps’. The decoders can acquire important data that is often stored in proprietary formats within the phone, including user details, passwords, contact details as well as conversational chat messages and other data. The ACESO and ATHENA implementations ensure that this data can be extracted and viewed in a systematic and evidentially secure manner.

Southampton-based Radio Tactics knows only too well the challenges facing organisations operating in forensic security. Established in 2004, the company is a specialist innovator of high tech digital intelligence and evidence gathering equipment for customers worldwide. Operating from head quarters in the UK, with further satellite branches in America and Australia, the company provides high tech, reliable solutions to the security industry, including those operating in military, law enforcement, governments and intelligence agencies. By drawing on the skill and expertise of a dedicated team, the company is also able to provide bespoke exploitation solutions that allow organisations to interrogate and interface with mobile phones, GPS and portable digital devices. These solutions enable authorised users to retrospectively gather evidence, as well as capture useful intelligence information. As advancements in technology make mobile communications more fluid, those operating in the forensic security industry face greater challenges. According to Mike Rose, Head of Marketing at Award-winning Radio Tactics, the mobile market has seen the biggest increase in demand in the last couple of years, based on rapid technological advancements. He revealed that the company is working to develop its current product range to keep up with the challenges facing its customer base, whilst also focusing on how future developments will influence new innovations: “The challenges for our customers are now much greater than they were when the company was first established, at a time when mobile technology was still very much in its infancy. In particular, advanced device capabilities and faster connectivity has seen technology-based crime become more of a threat than it was ten years ago. This has led to heightened demand for high tech digital

2013

intelligence and evidence gathering equipment, which is now at the forefront of crime prevention.” He added: “We work in a very fluid industry, where technology is undergoing a revolution and rapid connectivity and wider mobile usage is resulting in the emergence of more acute challenges for our customers. As a result, we have to react quickly and work proactively to develop solutions for the next generation.” Key to securing this Award is the company’s commitment to focus on the development of innovative crime prevention, evidence and intelligence gathering solutions, to meet the growing requirements of a rapidly changing market. With R&D a vital part of Radio Tactics’ future strategic vision, it comes as no surprise to learn that around two thirds of the staff are engaged in R&D functions. “A huge challenge facing authorities and organisations is ensuring technology develops at pace with the evolution of operating systems. As a company, we need to provide solutions that are efficient and effective to trace and store information securely. We also need to maintain operational excellence when dealing with existing technology so that we cater for as broader range of devices and applications as possible. This is particularly true when faced with different operating systems, such as Apple’s iOS, the Microsoft range of systems, Android and the Linux-based operating system to name just a few.” “We’re committed to providing the best possible solution to our customers, based on specific requirements. And, as mobile device storage is increasing exponentially, it means we have to develop solutions that work faster and more efficiently to capture this data and support our customer base with their objectives.” The ATHENA platform which has been developed in partnership with the US, Australian and UK military, is designed for frontline military and intelligence users. It addresses the need for

an acquisition tool which can be deployed to Special Forces to support operators making real-time decisions on the ground when ATHENA is a unique total intelligence gathering solution offering more than just mobile device data acquisition; it includes an integrated camera capability to take still images and motion videos as well as GPS location capture to record positional information, thereby delivering a complete intelligence overview. Rapid acquisition allows users to decide what types of data are of value during time critical operations reducing the time taken to acquire data from the target device. The solution is fully interruptible and can be disconnected at any point during an acquisition but will still retain the data already acquired.

Receiving this Award is a milestone for RADIO TACTICS and forms the final piece of the jigsaw that confirms the Company’s success, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective clients. Commenting on receiving this accolade, Mike went on to say: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as winners of this prestigious Award which recognises the uniqueness of Radio Tactics’ solutions. Behind these Best-in Class products is a dedicated team of highly creative and talented professionals who have successfully combined technology and customer insight to craft products that are deployed for use by non-expert law enforcement personnel”.

Actionable intelligence can be placed into watch lists deployed on the ATHENA terminal and have been proven in operations globally to imrpove tactical decision making.

Andy Gill, Managing Director at Radio Tactics commented that it was gratifying to receive the Award at this time as the Company prepares to celebrate its milestone 10th anniversary in January 2014.

Mission commanders have found the watch list capabilities to be invaluable in action an now rely on it.

2013

Most manufacturers deliver their products in large manufacturing runs, very few of the existing plastic card manufacturers provide a security card printing service for smaller order quantities. Company Cards set about changing the face of the industry in the UK and developed a cost effective solution for clients requiring short production runs and short turnaround times for their security cards. The company today offer a range of photo identity cards, generic security cards and access control cards. AEI Systems Ltd ‘...offering logistic support to a niche market’

M39

AEI Systems are a highly focused, world-leading defence organisation specialising in the logistic support of medium calibre Air, Land, Naval weapons and weapons systems and dismounted soldier applications . From the company’s base in Ascot, Berkshire, AEI utilise modern Computer Aided Design (CAD), Simulation, Project Data Management (PDM) and Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems, to respond promptly and effectively to customer demands for new and innovative solutions and delivers new and off the shelf products in a timely manner. The company strive to offer price competitive quality products that perform reliably through proven quality, precision and innovation. The company’s flat management structure and ‘open door’ policy benefits staff, suppliers and customers alike.

2013

Founded in 1961 as Aircraft Equipment International Ltd.; (hence AEI) began supplying surplus British military aircraft spares to what was then already a worldwide market. It specialised in spares for the Hunter aircraft but focus switched to the Hunter 4 x ADEN gun pack system in the mid 1960s when the company became the sole supplier to Hawker Siddeley Aviation for refurbished ADEN guns after Hawker-Siddeley won the contract to supply Switzerland with refurbished Hunter aircraft. In the late 1980s, AEI were recruited key Royal Ordnance (RO) design staff after closure of RO Enfield and quickly established themselves as a specialist design house for aircraft revolver cannon systems. This team developed the 25mm ADEN gun for the Harrier Mk.7/9 aircraft but the project was cancelled for aircraft operational reasons before the gun went into service.

Olight SR92

Olight M Series

Olight SR90 Intimidator

Olight X6 Marauder

2013

Industry-leading Olight flashlight technology Olight is a relatively new development to be launched in the UK but has a vast global portfolio to back its claims as the industry’s leading, cutting-edge flashlight technology.

The SR Series is widely used in search and rescue organisations. Featuring four super powerful LED torches, the flashlights are rugged in design and ideal for rescue operations and exploration.

Sourced and manufactured in the Far East, the Olight brand is a top quality, durable, drop tested product with signature performance levels. Utilising unique engineering methods, Olight flashlights monitor their own self contained heat levels and feature massive outputs of between 500, 600 and 950 luminance on standard ranges.

The SR and Marauder have been implemented into the Hertfordshire Police Force for the search and rescue capabilities. The flashlight can illuminate an area of up 700 metres and acts as a deterrent or detection resource. In many cases, the suspect has stopped, ending the officers pursuit and handed themselves in with no ‘darkened’ area to run into.

The Olight brand was established in 2006. Since this time, the high end, high quality illumination equipment has been launched with great success into the US, European and Asian illumination industries, covering a range of applications. Using aviation grade aluminium, Olight designs offer durable lightweight strength and reliable thermal properties. Olight flashlights use ceramic substrata printed-circuit-boards. Ceramic is proven as the best heat conduction material and can rapidly transfer the LEDs heat sink fins. In conjunction with the ceramic design of the Olight, the flashlights also feature Active Thermal Management (ATM) - internal temperature sensors detect ambient temperature and MCU controls output accordingly, therefore enabling the system to avoid overheating and keep components away from burning during continuous usage. In 2009 Olight launched the SR90 – the first 2000+ lumens single core flashlight. 2010 saw the launch of the M3X – the first high power and long throw flashlight to use CREE XM-L technology. And most recently, in 2011, Olight launched the SR92 flashlight which has raised output luminous flux to a new level. Committed to utilising the latest in LEDs, the designer of the Olight brand have devised a series of revolutionary flashlights which have changed the face of many industry applications. The Olight M Series can be used in military and tactical scenarios. Specially designed for tactical applications, the M Series has proved a huge success worldwide. With cutting-edge developments such as the M22 – the brightest flashlight of its kind and the M10, M20 and M18 which are used across many military applications – the M Series is Olight’s leading range.

Setting new levels of lighting and industry standards, Olight have recently launched the X6 Marauder – the brightest hand held torch on the market with 9,500 luminance capability. Although, relatively new to the marketplace, the flashlight has been instilled in many research and rescue organisations in the UK. Olight also develop the S Series – a flashlight for professional and industrial use, with the S10, S20 magnetic base flashlights being very popular. As UK distributors, Deben also stock Olight flashlights which suit extreme performance, travel, camping and everyday use applications, as well as a range of Olight accessories including filters, mounts and switches. With innovative designs utilising the latest technological advancements, Olight are committed to keeping their range of flashlights up-to-date and competitive. Deben Group Industries based in Suffolk are the distributors for Olight products as well as a range of other military, search & rescue and outdoor pursuit equipment. Richard Carr, UK Sales Manager for Deben promotes the Olight range in the UK and Ireland. A brand that is already sought after in many professional fields, Richard has already received increased interest due to Olight being featured at the Counter Terror Expo event which took place from 24th - 25th April 2013 as Olympia, London and was visited by over 9,000 attendees. For further information, please call Deben Group Industries on 01394 387 762 or visit www.deben.com and follow the link to the range of Olight products.

SECURITY INDUSTRY E-MAG AWARD WINNER

Public building treated with Selectaglaze’s Hinged Casements

2013

Selectaglaze awarded for bespoke solutions The Directors and Senior Management of the Security Industry E Magazine are delighted to introduce St Albansbased company, Selectaglaze as the recipients of the much coveted Blast Mitigation Product Provider of the Year 2013. The Award reflects the bespoke secondary glazing solutions that the company provide to a range of clients across a broad customer base. Formed in 1966, Selectaglaze is a family run company and has been recognised as a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004. The UK’s leading secondary glazing provider has worked on projects within Government Departments, Police stations, MoD, Court buildings and Universities up and down the country. The new, fully independent secondary windows and frames manufactured by Selectaglaze are conveniently fitted on to the ‘room side’ of the existing window to increase protection against intruders and localised blasts, reduce noise pollution, and save on energy bills. On receiving the Security Industry E Magazine’s Award, Selectaglaze Chairman and Managing Director, Meredith Childerstone commented: “It is very pleasing to receive sector recognition in this way. It is equally as pleasing that our work with older, traditional and listed public buildings have been recognised as improvements to this sector can be very sensitive and protecting them has to be acceptable to conservation and English heritage requirements among others. We aim to bring modern standards to well established structures; securing the initial buildings whilst maintaining a sympathetic approach to their aesthetic qualities and place in society.

We bring customers many advantages in terms of reducing noise levels and energy performance but other benefits include creating a more usable, refreshed building and something that both the client and developer can be proud of; ultimately improving the working and living conditions for future generations.” Window systems are an integral part of prominent and iconic buildings in many city centres across the world, in venues including hotels, Government buildings, museums, offices, Universities, clubs and of course, residential homes. Electronic security will warn but not resist attacks on these buildings, so physical security measures are an important part of any plan for their protection. However, windows can also be a very vulnerable part of a building and most are viewed as soft targets by terrorists and criminals, impacting on people’s safety and the protection of property. Glass offers very little resistance to attack and can be shattered by a bomb blast just 100 metres away, as well as being easily broken by an intruder or opportunist. Building owners owe a certain duty of care to the protection of personnel and equipment inside a building; whether it protecting occupants residing there or the infrastructure of a corporation ensuring business continuity. The risks of attack are obviously greater in modern day cities. City centre buildings fall under three categories of low, medium and high risk vulnerability. Buildings at low risk of attack from opportunist thieves generally require simple toughened glass and locks; while medium risk developments are required to protect against a more determined attack and may also feature reinforced frames; whereas high risk areas are under regular threat and require the most robust of solutions. Selectaglaze’s systems include robust frames, secure locking systems and strengthened glass which can be hinged, sliding or

fixed depending on the aesthetic specifications and requirements of the building. All of the award winning company’s systems are fabricated in-house and supplied ready-to-install. Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing is subjected to rigorous testing before certification. The glass systems are live blast tested against standard ISO:16933 and physically attacked with a wide range of tools prior to installation and can fit discreetly and sympathetically into contemporary or period buildings. The company manufacture and supply 400 bespoke secondary glazing systems per week. Selectaglaze have in depth knowledge of the industry and the high standards that customers come to expect. Couple this with competitive prices and it is obvious to see why Selectaglaze is the industry’s first choice when it comes to secondary glazing.

2013

The services that Selectaglaze provide are proven to payback a generation both in terms of the money that people can save on future energy bills and the quality of working and social life that they can experience in terms of noise reduction, security and even increased UV protection. City centres are renowned for staying constantly busy around the clock. Therefore it is imperative for businesses and residential properties alike to provide privacy and reduce noise pollution as well as enable the occupants to enjoy the utmost comfort. Selctaglaze’s secondary glazing systems possess all of these benefits. Couple with improving energy performance and reducing fuel bills, installation is a ‘no-brainer’. Secondary glazing can also be used in line with listed traditional buildings without compromising their aesthetic qualities. Selectaglaze can manufacture and install anything from one

Monumental sash windows treated with Selectaglaze’s Vertical Sliding Units

window to a whole floor or multi floor system. The secondary glazing solutions do not require planning permission and can also be used as adaptations to tenant occupied buildings. Although London is the company’s predominant marketplace, Selectaglaze have embarked on successful projects all over the UK and Ireland. Selectaglaze’s products have been very well received and even endorsed by the Home Office to help the defence of property. “Selectaglaze worked on numerous projects within the boundaries of the 2012 London Olympics making required improvements to the acoustics, thermal performance and security of buildings in and around London,” Meredith explained. “As a company, we achieved great success in 2012, largely due to the Olympics. Although many of the new-build Olympic buildings has

accounted for secondary glazing, Selectaglaze worked to provide retro-fitted glazing in older more traditional buildings - hardening their capabilities through secondary systems. The Olympics also created a great deal of ‘spin off’ work, preparing hotels and other city buildings in readiness of the Games.” “2013 has seen a steady demand for secondary glazing systems and the future looks bright for us.” He concluded. For further information about the award winning company, please call Selectaglaze on 01727 837 271, email enquiries@ selectaglaze.co.uk or visit the company’s website at www. selectaglaze.co.uk

System Set-up utility which is supplied with a reader through to comprehensive dose management databases suitable for recording and managing the dose records of unlimited individuals. The Dosifast software is particularly designed for the requirements of emergency response teams. For example, it has a feature which has enables a group of dosimeters to be set up so they require a single button press to instantaneously activate according to the pre-set settings. In the event of an emergency, the dosimeters can be activated and handed straight to the individuals responding. At the end of the incident, when the responders return their dosimeters the data can be transferred to their individual dose records when the dosimeter is read. Detection, Identification and Measurement JFIMS offer ruggedised PC systems with built in GPS capability. Using revolutionary Radiamap software, the systems display trajectory, level indications and location as as well as having the capability to replay a mission. The PDS 100 series of locators are rugged compact and user–friendly and complies with and exceeds the requirements of the ITRAP and ANSI 43-32 standards. The PDS 100G and PDS 100GN are respectively a gamma and a gamma plus neutron search meter with high sensitivity and fast response times. The CsI detector for gamma radiation with a range of 45keV to 1.8Mev and 6Li detector for neutrons with a range of 25eV to 10 MeV allow for the rapid location of sources and the classification of the source type (medical, industrial material, SNM‌). The spectrum of the source can be stored and downloaded with either an IRDA or a Bluetooth link for further study or archiving.

2013

Some cases require great sensitivity; in these circumstances JFIMS’ SPIR identification mobile can be applied. The rugged, movable search and identify system covertly fits into cars, boats, helicopters and air planes. The versatile system allows 1 to 4 detectors to be connected and has the capability to identify simultaneously up to 4 isotopes – rapidly locating and characterising areas with high radiation levels. The SPIR identification mobile device features simplified displays to present the key parameters under analysis but also offers an expert mode where spectra and trend information is also displayed.

The PDS 100G ID and PDS 100GN ID have in addition the facility to identify and display the isotope as well as its class. The advanced algorithm allows for the identification of mixtures of up to four isotopes including screening of SNM by medical sources and exceeds the requirements of ANSI 42-48. Identification of sources is rapid, typically less than 1 minute at 1 μSv/h. The spectrum of the source can be stored and downloaded with either an IRDA or a Bluetooth link for further study or archiving. The HDS 100 is a high sensitivity hand held search and identification monitor delivering rapid identification and classification of nuclear materials. The HDS 100 uses the same detectors and detection algorithms as the PDS 100 ID monitors, but with a significantly larger detector volume, the HDS 100 series has an improved sensitivity and speed of identification and classification. Vehicle and Pedestrian Monitoring It is a common task within the security industry to locate and identify a source; JFIMS’ monitoring vehicle and pedestrian solutions facilitate the pinpointing of a threat location, rapidly alerting the operator if an isotope is approaching too close to a large source.

JFIMS work to exceptionally high standards and as company, understand the importance of safety, quality and the impact that their products have on the environment. JFIMS radiation protection monitors were widely used during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The revolutionary monitoring equipment was used to directly scan individuals entering Olympic venues, many of whom didn’t realise that they were being scanned. The systems uses made no difference to queuing times and did not slow down access to any venue where the system was used. The process, thankfully did not find any ‘dirty bombs’ or threats to the safety of athletes and individuals visiting the Games but did pick up on medical treatments and surgical instruments that had been placed within the human body as a means of treating an injury; thus highlighting the vital need for such systems and their capability to detect threats. For further information about the company’s award winning developments, please call James Fisher Inspection & Measurement Services on 01946 828 400, email enquiries to contact@jfims.co.uk or visit the company’s website at www.jfnl.co.uk

SECURITY INDUSTRY E-MAG AWARD WINNER

2012

Gains Recognition with Prestigious Award Under the umbrella of parent company Herbert Engineering Group, Cambridgeshire-based HERBERT SYSTEMS has achieved an impressive reputation over the past 40 years for the design and manufacture of a wide range of superbly engineered airport and logistic baggage and parcel handling systems, designed around the evolving operational needs of its’ customers. Thanks to a continual commitment to research and development of innovative handling and logistic technology, the Company is able to provide a fresh approach to existing cabin baggage handling challenges, as well as developing systems for the fast changing future of baggage handling and security checkpoints. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn Herbert Systems has been singled out as this year’s recipient of the coveted AIRPORT HANDLING SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013, which was recently presented by a representative of Security Industry E-Mag at a ceremony held at Herbert Systems’ premises. A totally independent Award Programme recognised both in this country and abroad, this Award Scheme was created in order to recognise those businesses and individuals that have made an outstanding

contribution to their particular field. Security Industry E-Mag is always keen to bring attention to those who are providing a product or service that stands out from the crowd and deserves to be appreciated not only by its’ readers, but also by a wider audience. Not every company can walk away with one of these accolades, that have become the hallmark of success, but those that do all emerge from the process more successful; with many having gone on to become acknowledged leaders in the marketplace. An established family business, Herbert Systems takes pride in adhering to traditional values such as reliability, integrity and excellence, as part of the truly customer-orientated service it provides, as Jo Herbert the company’s General Manager outlined in a recent interview: “Key to our success has been our philosophy to provide individually tailored solutions that will not only meet, but in many cases, exceed the customer’s expectations. Coupled with this, we aim to ensure the client reaps the maximum benefit from their investment in our innovative handling technology which enables sustainability, together with improved efficiencies and minimum maintenance costs.”

Last year marked the Company’s 40th anniversary and the launch of a number of innovative new products across all sectors:

keep clean and has improved the look of the machine in these highly visible areas.

Key to securing this Award was the launch of the Company’s revolutionary TRS (Automatic Tray Return System), which is certainly causing a stir within the marketplace:

A new hard wearing and easily cleaned PVC capping has also been added to the customer facing edges of the TRS; with the divestment area now benefiting from a solid top, with rollers protruding, to help alleviate items falling through rollers reducing anxiety for the passengers.

Specifically designed for Airport Security check points, modular and fixed Conveyer Systems, Baggage orientation equipment, together with simulation and de–scrambling systems, the Herbert Systems’ TRS speeds up airport security checks, significantly reduces capital cost, removes manual handling of trays by staff and has a very positive impact on passenger queuing and stress levels. Since its’ launch, a number of enhancements have been made to the TRS Tray Return System to improve aesthetics, functionality, ease of use and installation. A new modular control system has enabled a true “Plug and Play” concept to speed up installation, also making it a simple process onto which you can add further modules to change the configuration in the future. The tray dispenser and reclaimer have both been remodelled and now feature a very hard wearing laminate top, which is much easier to

2012

Partnering TRS is the company’s eVelocity which brings new, unparalleled value-added capabilities to screening operations, reshaping the checkpoint process to address present and future challenges and requirements. Streamlining Security Screening with eVelocity is an outstanding new concept now being marketed by Herbert Systems to compliment the TRS. The partnership brings together a unique system to enhance security activities whilst providing a platform for ‘real-time’ management information. The system can be configured to allow screening staff to be located remotely away from the security area allowing them to concentrate fully. All the x-ray data from any number of checkpoints is fed into a single network, where the images can be analysed by security screeners and any suspect baggage immediately identified.

Following its launch at London Stansted the innovative TRS Tray Return System, has now been installed at Stavanger Sola Airport in Norway and Dubai Airports. John Farrow, Head of Terminal at Stansted Airport, said: “The innovative Automatic Tray Return System (Herbert TRS) we’ve introduced here at London Stansted utilises technology more effectively to reduce the manual handling of passengers’ bags and supersedes the previous labour-intensive system with an efficient automatic one. On-going feedback from passengers and staff has helped modify the prototype and deliver the system that’s now in operation.” Six TRS have been installed to replace Stavanger Sola’s manual system for handling cabin baggage at the security checkpoint, which involved the time consuming and labour intensive transfer of trays by trolley. Stavanger Airport’s operator, Avinor plan to use the TRS to improve throughput, enhance passenger and staff experience and reduce costs. Meanwhile, Dubai International Airport is having 116 TRS installed, through distribution partners I. O. Systems, to speed passenger throughput, reduce queuing and enable security staff to work more efficiently. They were faced with the challenge of growing passenger numbers and queues forming around the security checkpoint area. Having seen the Stansted operation, Dubai was targeting 300 passengers per hour throughput minimum, but the Herbert TRS has averaged 400 passengers per hour, during an extended trial period running on live passengers, well above expectations and with minimum maintenance and downtime. Andy Dowe, Herbert Systems’ Business Development Manager added: “By replacing a manual system with the TRS automatic system, we can eliminate the need for staff to lift stacks of trays. Each tray, as it reaches the end of the line, is automatically returned to the start of the line and is presented to the passenger as he or she arrives at the checkpoint. This means staff don’t need to handle trays, they arrive as required for passengers and the staff can concentrate on the security elements of their role – and are not beset with manual handling issues.”

Other innovations recently launched by the company include its’ Pathfinda Vision a new baggage and parcel alignment system specifically developed to enable increased throughput by providing the more accurate baggage and parcel alignment needed for smaller screening tunnels. “Whether you are looking for purpose-made Conveyors, DeScrambling Systems, Separation Systems & Sorters, Pick & Place, Metal Detecting & Vision Systems, Tray Handling and De-Nesting/ Restacking systems, we have the capability to design and manufacture a solution to meet your specific needs that will perform faultlessly and efficiently.“ Receiving the AIRPORT HANDLING SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013 is a milestone for HERBERT SYSTEMS and forms the final piece of the jigsaw that confirms the Company’s success, as well as acting as a seal of approval to prospective clients. Commenting on receiving this Award Jo went on to say: “We are delighted to be recognised in the security industry with this award, it means a great deal to us. We are extremely proud of our products and the solutions they provide for our customers needs. This award reflects all the hard work and commitment from our highly skilled team throughout the year”. Accuracy International

‘No place for second best’

Accuracy International (AI) are unique in their approach to designing long range sniper rifles. Based on user feedback and analysis of their particular specifications, which can differ, AI have developed an optimal balance between traditional engineering skills and cutting edge design. Through computer aided design, all AI’s weapons and suppressors are designed electronically using CAD focused software, Solidworks, which enables the company to visualise new prototypes much quicker than previously possible. Designs for components and entire weapon systems can be fed into the Rapid Prototyping Machine (RPM), which then decodes the CAD designs and lays down physical layers of liquid

2013

plastic in a series of cross-sections. These layers gradually build up to create a physical version of the CAD schematic ready for handling in the real world. CAD and RPM technology enables Accuracy International to quickly prototype new items without the huge cost and time constraints of constructing it out of metal. As soon as finalised, the system is constructed identically each and every time and sent to AI’s the machine shop for manufacturing where the creation of core components such as the chassis, action, magazines, bolt and firing mechanism takes place. The elements are

created in CNC milling machines, hydraulic presses, spark erosion cutters and components are covered with anti-corrosion coatings providing extra durability and longevity. AI have spent a good deal of time maximising the assembly flow of all its rifles. When manufactured, each weapon is partnered with it’s own identity tag and paperwork specifying it’s build stage and bespoke options. The next stage sees the completed weapon sent to Accuracy International’s dedicated in-house testing facility where the long range rifles are tested for mechanical operation, and component/full weapon quality. When they meet the company’s exacting standards, they are then sentout to end users or distributors. The ability to proof all models in-house is a unique feature of Accuracy International, meaning that the company is able to cut down on transport, ultimately reducing costs and improving security. A Portsmouth-based company, Accuracy International was established in 1978 by a team of international and national target shooters initially, to improve the full military ruggedness of the long range rifle utilising the performance enhancing features learned in Olympic and national target shooting. Since this time, Accuracy International have built impeccable pedigree amongst operators and precision shooters and the Special Forces. With a dedicated network of agents and distributors in the UK, US and the rest of the world, AI’s concept-driven product range has evolved solely by the needs of users, highly trained military and police units in over 60 countries worldwide. In 2008, AI were awarded the 3.7 million pound contract to supply almost 600 sniper weapons to the UK Ministry of Defence. AI’s weapons are now an integral part of long range sniping lore and are widely deployed in the ongoing Afghanistan conflict. The .338 Lapua

Magnum calibre sniper rifle system made by Accuracy International is standard issue for today’s British Army. “The fact that such a small company can be a world-beater in the manufacture of quality weapon systems in a market dominated by huge American and European companies is a huge achievement,” says Color Sergeant Lee Chevenix, a British Army sniping-team instructor. “I know from first-hand experience how revered the AI product is, even in the States, where traditionally U.S. producers are favoured.” The AX-338 one of the most recent evolutions of AI’s design and is arguably best long range rifle in the world. The AW338 long range rifle holds the Guinness World Record for the longest recorded sniper kill in history; at 2,474 metres/2.47 kilometres, fired in Helmand Provence, Afghanistan. The model used was AI’s prestigious L115A3 in.338 with a mounted Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 scope, firing 8.6x70mm cartridge with pin-point precision and amazing consistency. The highly advanced, new generation AX series bolt action sniper rifle is based upon the DNA of the battle proven AW series. It inherits the same toughness, reliability, superb accuracy and ease of maintenance. The configuration of the rifle allows the operator to fit most of the existing in line night vision devices without modification. The rifle is designed to be extremely versatile supporting both Counter Terrorist (CT) and convention sniping. Accuracy International is based on the principles of world class manufacturing, teamwork, mutual respect and trust with the objective of maintaining our reputation as producers of the “Best Sniper Rifle in the World”. Cintec International A globally recognised leader in engineering research and development; Cintec is based in Newport, South Wales. Originally trading as Cavity Lock Systems, Cintec International Ltd has formed valuable partnerships and established a global presence through a network of agents with independent companies in Wales, Canada, USA, Australia and India. In the past, the company have focused on military problems, however, Cintec are expanding the use of the products to other commercial applications for example water storage using air walls and have tested their products in most regions of the world. Although Cintec have found a strategy that works, the company are always looking at new markets and consolidating advances that they have made to date. The company’s extensive portfolio of clients includes individuals, Local Authorities, Government departments, corporations and Transport Authorities among others. Providing a complete range of turnkey packages in engineering and contracting, Cintec’s work is evident in three primary areas of expertise: Waterwall Blast Suppression & Isolation providing rapid protection against improvised explosive devices including mitigation of the effect of dirty bombs and a range of products developed for fire and emergency services Cintec’s revolutionary Waterwall product provides a protective surround which can be used in the controlled explosion of devices and CBRN threats. The design of Waterwall changes the characteristics of water from being a continuum and a free flowing fluid into a solid wall of water that can be engineered and used as a free standing wall. This use has been patented and Cintec’s clients can be offered water filled structures that are unavailable by any of the company’s competitors. Equally, the unique design and build quality of all Cintec products is second to none. Utilising this, Waterwall refracts the impact of blast, fragmentation and increased pressure to withstand high volumes. Showcased at the G8 in Japan, utilising the Waterwall and its state-of-the-art properties results in limited fragmentation and low blast wave levels when carrying out controlled explosions. Waterwall has undertaken stringent tests within the industry including operation at the FPEG meeting which takes place biannually. The product which can be conveniently transported in a range of vehicles, has also been tested in Jordan under the scrutiny of security agencies and even the King’s private Bodyguards. Cintec offer a range of bespoke adaptations to Waterwall and can tailor the product to meet the specification of various industry uses. For example, a decontaminate can be added for the safe mitigation of CBRN bombs. Waterwall can be used in a number of ways. The product can encase the wheel of a vehicle carrying a potential CBRN threat or used as an A-frame for larger dirty bombs. The product, which is designed, manufactured and supplied by Cintec has been tested and implemented in many of the world’s aircraft, battlefield situations and in partnership with the Royal Navy, in vessels where

ammunition is carried. Waterwall can also be placed by a robot and removed from the site; therefore further reducing the risk to the operator. Another project saw Cintec provide a Terminal at Heathrow International Airport with a variation of Waterwall for use with CBRN threats - utilising robotic technology, the Waterwall could be placed, filled and deployed in smooth operation ensuring minimal disruption. Waterwall has also been used in Afghanistan where non-metal CBRN devices are in place. Waterwall has been used in the controlled explosion of these devices, safeguarding the troops against dirty bombs in the battlefield. Waterwall has recently been used in Munich, Germany for the safe explosion of UXOs with late fuses dating back to World War II. The device was discovered between 4 and 5 metres underground and the decision was taken to commission a Waterwall tank of water, 4 metres high to smother the bomb on its explosion to avoid fragmentation and keep disruption to a minimum. Fire Brigades in the UK have also invested in Waterwall for its flood defence capabilities. The standard Water tank used by Emergency Services features 1.75 metres of water; a lightweight solution which possesses improved constriction properties than traditional sandbags. The inflatable tanks also feature compression fitted joints to avoid leaks. Waterwall can be used within Emergency Services in conjunction with a stateof-the-art fire fighting robot. Waterwall is secured with a quick release coupling to a robot which then deploys, saving time and allowing personnel to carry on with their every day tasks. Cintec also supplied Waterwall tanks to Fire, Search and Rescue agencies in the UK. The 10,000 litre tanks which connect to the main bowser, recycle the water which is used for training and filling purposes meaning no redundancy while fighting a fire. The tank can also be used for fracking processes with a filtration tray set inside the tank’s wall for hard products, dirt etcetera, contained within the recycled water. Anchor & reinforcement of bridges, railway structures and the strengthening of structures to resist earthquakes Cintec stands for Controlled Injection Technology and was formed in 1984 to promote a unique retrofitted anchoring and reinforcement system in the construction industry.

Having successfully anchored over 265 bridges worldwide, Cintec’s reinforcement operations have no detrimental impact on the natural environment and offer 120 year durability. Utilising TRL research and development software, the company strengthen bridges to hold loads of up to 45 tonnes to +/- 15% accuracy. For this valuable work, Cintec have received many environmental awards. The system’s biggest success has been to strengthen existing masonry and brick arches for which Cintec International were awarded the Queens Award for Innovation and Renovation to Historic Structures such as Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, numerous castles and Cathedrals. Other projects where Cintec have utilised their specialist ARCHTEC maintenance software include the restoration of a railway bridge over the River Ganges in India, and the reinforcement of a bridge in the heart of Deli in time for the country’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games. The use of the system has been developed initially to strengthen structures to resist seismic forces but it was soon realised the synergy between this type of

loading particularly the improvised explosive devices used by terrorists with vehicle bombs. A bridge in Denbighshire suffered extensive debris damage due to extensive patterns, divert future flood water and withstand future debris influx. The company’s work here was recognised by an Historic Bridge Award. The company was also commissioned to repair the burial chamber of the Step Pyramid in Cairo following the catastrophic earthquake which hit the city in1992. The Step Pyramid is the oldest over land structure in the world. It’s burial chamber partially collapsed during the earthquake; Cintec used Waterwall technology to provide pneumatic support – protecting the stone work with foam surrounds – whilst re-pointing and implementing anchor support systems in the historic structure. Utilising ARCHTEC software to monitor cracking patterns, Cintec worked to prevent further brick falls to +/-15%accuracy and provided further seismic solutions for fifteen other mosques in and around Cairo. Blastec Blast Mitigation to resist bomb and blast explosion In today’s high security climate and the ever-increasing risk of CBRN attacks, masonry reinforcement is of paramount importance. Cintec uses ARCHTEC software to prevent structural collapse, obtaining valuable information from the mathematical analysis of cracking patterns and fall motions.

The new product range which encompasses Cintec’s anchoring and ARCHTEC software is called Blastec; an extensive testing regime was undertaken into various types of material and wall type of construction to determine the strengthening qualities of the system which included support by the British and United States security forces.

Clients can expect to gain value from Cintec’s experience working in this very special environment with multi applications and knowledge of numerous at risk situations. This coupled with a product that is developed in-house under the total control of highly skilled engineers using the industry best practices and standards, places Cintec at the very forefront of industry.

The first trial of the Blastec range was based on water inside PVC sausage’s 2 metres long and 450mm wide in the form of ovals. This wall needed two days to erect and contained 30 bags that were stacked in rows on on top of the other to produce a wall 2 metres wide and 2 metres high. The test was to prove the effectiveness of water.

“Our products are designed to mitigate the risk that the client anticipates. They are extremely effective against blast waves and fragmentation usually found in an IED and can assist in reducing the foot print of a CBRN device with the correct countermeasures added to the water” explained Cintec’s Managing Director, Peter James.

The test was very successful in that we learnt that water was excellent at absorbing the energy of the blast wave and also to defeat fragmentation but that we needed to be able to harness its deployment and extend its range of possible uses.

Peter directs operations and spent eighteen years in the Naval Reserve specialising in mine countermeasures in the executive branch and retired as a Lieutenant Commander.

Blastec anchoring systems can also be used in conjunction with window systems, resulting in modern day buildings not looking out of date whilst reducing the dangers or blast waves and fragmentation. The product has been used successfully on existing buildings around the world including power stations in the UK as well as on structures managed by Basildon and Watford Housing Associations. Each of Cintec’s products are examined and certified at test licensed or military test sites throughout the world.

“Obviously, as a company, we need to expand progressively using products that are fit for purpose with the correct financial return that allows further research and development to be matched with on-going sales” Peter concluded. TRAKA How intelligent access management systems are helping organizations, including uk prisons, stay safe & secure

Since its inception in 1995 Traka has remained at the forefront of Key Management Solutions; with its’ customers now spanning a considerable range of industries from commercial to military and Government. First conceived in 1990 when British Airways needed assistance in the management of keys for its’ ground support vehicles, Traka quickly realised that hardware, as well as relevant software, would be required to both secure and account for vehicles and their keys and this was to be the catalyst that led to the development and installation of a prototype cabinet in 1993. Never one to rest on its laurels, Traka has continued to grow and gather momentum over the years, building on its initial success, gaining many major accounts and opening up extensive overseas markets; with over 50% of Traka’s annual turnover coming from international trade to 40 countries throughout Europe and beyond. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that Traka has been singled out to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise on no less than three separate occasions. Last year Traka announced its biggest strategic development which saw the company being acquired by ASSA ABLOY, the world leader in door locking solutions.

4Secure Ltd was established in 2003 with the aim to provide cyber security solutions to a niche market of customers. Employing people with good credentials that will understand all the aspects of both the security and technology was a key priority, and it still is. The target market for 4Secure is companies or organisations that have any sort of confidential data that they wish to keep secure, for example, Government departments, financial institutions and schools.

4Secure can advise on, prevent and solve most data problems. For more than a decade, the highly qualified team of IT Systems Engineering Consultants have worked to create secure systems from end-to-end. These numerous assignments often taking place within the UK as well as overseas, within organisations both large and small. Along with the high security products supplied, 4Secure also undertakes incident response tasks; this includes identifying and containing a possible threat to a company’s information. This is one of the main aspects of the company, alongside the information assurance consultancy. In addition, Forensic recovery is another service provided by 4Secure.

They will conduct a risk assessment to identify all of your assets, find out what is most vulnerable and how these particular files are stored. They will assess how likely it is that these could be exploited and the cost to you and your company if they were. 4Secure will create a plan for you that will guide you through about how you could prevent, detect and respond to threats as well as suggest ways to reduce or even eliminate the risks, this will be in a simple language that you will be able to understand, not just computer jargon!
