The Season of

Lent

From Associate Pastor Dr. David Hull

I like these words from Marlene Kropf, a professor at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary: In the daily round of life, dust and cobwebs accumulate in our souls. The hidden corners of our hearts become encrusted with grime or filled with forgotten debris. During the weeks of Lent, God’s Spirit is given opportunity to clear away the clutter, sweep away the dust and wash us clean. We are invited to prepare ourselves—heart, soul, mind and body—for the new life of Easter. Do you have any dust and cobwebs in your soul? Is there grime encrusted in the hidden corners of your heart? If so, the season of Lent offers a concentrated time for some spring cleaning. Lent marks the season in the Christian Year when we make the journey with our Lord to the cross. It is a time when we focus on the suffering, sacrifice, passion and redemption that Jesus offered through the cross. The Season of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 14. We will mark the beginning of Lent with an Ash Wednesday worship service that night. I invite you to join us in the Chapel at 6:15 following our Fellowship Supper for a time of worship that will include an opportunity for the imposition of ashes as a mark of our faith in Christ. The emphasis of Lent continues with our morning worship services. For six Sundays, beginning February 18, we will focus our hearts and minds on “The Journey to Jerusalem in the Gospel of John.” Words from this great Fourth Gospel will point us to the cross. To complement what happens on Sunday morning in worship, Dock Hollingsworth and I will teach a Bible Study on Wednesday nights which examines “Signs that Point the Way: Miracles in the Gospel of John.” Finally, on the Wednesday night of Holy Week (March 28) we will return to the Chapel for a Holy Week worship service to conclude our Lenten observance. I hope that you will join us for this holy journey that leads to Easter. Gloria Patino December 29
