E

ver wondered how you might cope with a medical emergency? This becomes even more critical when you live in a foreign country since even the best linguists might struggle when in a panic. The obvious solution is to undertake a first aid course with either the Red Cross (www.croix-rouge.fr) , the Civil Protection organisation (www.protection-civile.org), or the Croix Blanche (www.croixblanche.org). Perhaps you could go one step further and sign up as a volunteer fireman as they are all trained to treat a variety of medical emergencies (www.pompiersdefrance.org).

Even if your French is not perfect, it is well worth attending one of these courses because as well as learning the skills that could help you save a life, you will have the chance to meet local people and improve your French at the same time.

If you live somewhere quite remote, it may also help if you keep a note, written in French, that gives clear directions to your house.

To assist you in the event of a medical emergency, here are some handy phrases : English I need... a doctor an ambulance to have asthma to have a heart attack to have a stroke I broke my...

If you think your language skills are really not up to attending a First Aid course in French, there may soon be another option.

Beckie Roques is an English woman living in the Tarn et Garonne region and she is in the process of qualifying as a First Aid instructor in conjunction with the Croix Blanche.

Beckie is hoping to hold courses for English speakers in groups of 8-10 people. The basic first aid course (PSC1) takes around 1012 hours over a 2 day period and will cost about 50-70 euros, a small price to pay if it helps you deal with a medical emergency.

However, we will have to update you on Beckie's availability in a future edition as she has just had the happy news that she is expecting her fourth child, so she is otherwise engaged for a few months! Shirley 15

Relaxation Therapy and Sleep Problems

S

leep is essential for our physical and mental well being. The body rests while the brain sifts and sorts all the facts that it has recorded during the previous day. But sometimes our “hard disc” rebels and refuses to be cleaned. Then we encounter problems sleeping or we wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep again.

Of course this happens to most of us from time to time but unfortunately there are those who suffer like this for longer periods leading to more problems. Tiredness sets in straight away and then little by little our bodies and brains begin to suffer resulting in irritation, forgetfulness, bad temper, stress, hypertension, depression and lack of concentration. Little by little the joy of living disappears.

You find yourself suffering in a vicious circle, insomnia is brought on by the belief that you won't be able to sleep. The doctor prescribes sleeping pills and you think you will be able to sleep peacefully.

However pills treat the symptoms of the problem and not the cause.

After an artificially induced sleep you wake even more tired than before…

So what can you do about it?

To begin with you need to look at how you live life day to day, develop a regular day and night routine. Don't watch television in bed – or if you have to, watch comedy or nature programs (the brain finds it difficult to cope with images of war or anything stimulating).

Don't eat a meal after 8pm, do some sort of sport – better than taking an antidepressant. Air the bedroom and sleep with the window open, let go of the day's problems. But how do you do that?

You can learn to leave the day behind you by doing simple exercises. A few sessions from a relaxation therapist and/or by listening to a training CD can teach you how to relax before you go to bed.

Instead of taking a sleeping pill, take Passiflora (passionflower, passiflore in French), or a few drops of Bach Flower Rescue Remedy or Bach Rescue Night Spray (Fleurs de Bach). St John's Wort (Millepertuis in French) can help if you are very stressed but better still consult a relaxation therapist and learn to manage your stress.

HEALTH EDITORIAL When I am with my Anglophone friends, we regularly get to chat about health in France : social security, insurance, doctors and all these subjects which I believe are essential when living permanently in a foreign country.

In this issue, I did not want to talk about such serious topics because there is already lots of such information available on the web and in newspapers. Instead, I thought it would be helpful to suggest ways of living that prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place : taking first aid classes could be a good start, not to mention the fact that it is a great opportunity to spend time with French people. After all, we all have the same body if not the same language !

ith all the debates about Genetically Modified crops, many people are becoming more interested in buying food and other products that have been produced as naturally as possible.

This consumer interest prompted the creation of the Biocoop organisation in France some twenty years ago. Biocoop is a network of over 300 shops across France, dedicated to supplying organic products and to the development of organic farming, encouraging farmers who respect animals and use natural methods for producing food.

Typically their outlets stock a wide range of organic foods but also other items such as organically produced cosmetics, cleaning materials, baby products and wines.

Because of the levels of interest in organic products, more of these are also appearing in the bigger supermarkets, a sure sign that the wider public is demanding their availability. However, the range of goods offered still tends to be more limited than in specialist outlets such as the Biocoop members.

You may also have seen the logo AB (Agriculture Biologique) on some products. This is France's national sign for organic food products and means that the product must contain over 95% organic components, it must have been produced in the EU and been certified by one of the accredited inspection bodies.

So, if you care about how animals are treated and how your food is produced then think Bio when you next go shopping. After all, as consumers, we have the power to change which products are stocked on the shelves.

AMAP “Association for the Maintenance of Country Agriculture”

I

n the UK, we were encouraged to buy products with a little red tractor symbol to signify its origins. Here in France, the system is much more locally based and involves direct contact between consumer and producer, rather than relying upon a supermarket chain to stock these products.

The basis of AMAP is a contract between producers and consumers.

This contract is a mutual obligation - the producer cultivates his produce ecologically, without chemicals or pesticides and the consumer commits to buy this produce throughout the year in the form of a weekly “basket”.

Vegetables and fruits are chosen from what is seasonally available and bought directly from the producer.

Founded in 2001, AMAP has been developed successively in Provence Riviera, Midi-Pyrenees, Ile de France, Rhône Alpes, Aquitaine, etc. Today, AMAP is present in the majority of the areas of France, counting today between 1000 and 1200 producers and representing more than 50.000 families, nearly 200.000 consumers.

The cost of the average basket varies according to the number of members and what they buy, but is typically between 20 and 25 euros per week for a family of 5 people.

Each week, at a pre-arranged time, the consumers replenish their baskets. This is a key time in the operation of AMAP. It is when information is exchanged about what produce is available and consumers can give feedback as to what they are seeking. In general, the consumer contacts AMAP and the produce to be cultivated is determined by the farmer in agreement with the consumers, according to season, demand and local specialities.

Thus AMAP functions in your locality, directly between producer and consumer to ensure good relations and production in accordance with the demand for ecologically healthy produce for a healthy diet.

The AMAP system is also a good way for us to stimulate the local economy.

SOUPE DE POTIMARON by Mimie, Les Dodus en Ville in Puy L'Evêque Ingredients : - One onion - Garlic - Potimaron (pumpkin) - Curry - Cinnamon - Butter - Crème fraîche liquide In a pressure-cooker, put a peeled onion, 3 cloves of garlic, a potimaron cut in large chunks with its skin but remove the seeds.

Cover with water, add a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of curry.

Close the pressure-cooker and leave it to cook for 15 minutes. Once cooked, mix everything, add some butter, salt & pepper, and fresh cream. Add some grated cheese (parmiggiano, Gouda, or Mimolette, etc.) and serve with croutons. Bon appétit !

Ingrédients : - Un oignon - Aïl - Potimaron - Curry - Cannelle - Beurre - Crème fraîche liquide Dans un cuiseur vapeur : mettre un oignon épluché, 3 gousses d'ail, un potimaron avec sa peau, vidé de ses graines, et coupé grossièrement en gros cubes. Couvrir à peine d'eau. Ajouter une pincée de cannelle et une pincée de curry. Fermer la cocotte et cuire 15 minutes. Une fois cuit, mixer le tout dans la cocotte, rajouter un bon morceau de beurre et de la crème fraîche liquide, saler et poivrer à votre goût. Saupoudrer de fromage râpé au choix, parmesan, mimolette, Gouda... et servir avec de petits croûtons.

A

Hammam is the Moroccan version of a Swedish sauna but, in my opinion, offers a more relaxing experience. Whereas a sauna is more of a dry heat, a Hammam is based on warm water and steam. Both saunas and Hammams are believed to offer relief from tired and strained muscles, to stimulate the immune system, cleanse toxins from the body and reduce stress. In addition, the treatments involved in a Hammam will exfoliate and moisturise your skin.

For a truly genuine Hammam (meaning 'spreader of warmth' in Arabic) you need to visit Morocco, but many luxury hotels and spas around France offer the chance to enjoy it a bit closer to home.

In Morocco the setting for a Hammam is usually a marble-decked room where you recline on a hot marble bench and warm water is poured over you and your surroundings creating a steamy atmosphere. You are then massaged with black soap made from oil and crushed black olives which exfoliates and moisturises the skin. After this you are rinsed with warm water and the soap is reapplied, this time a bit more vigorously with a coarse mitt that removes dead skin cells and stimulates the circulation, reducing

the build-up of cellulite. Once again you are rinsed all over before your body and hair is coated with Rhassoul clay. This clay is found deep under the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and it has been used for over 1400 years as a cleansing and detoxifying material.

Once fully coated, you relax in the warmth for several minutes before being rinsed again with warm water. You then step into a large marble bath of cool water, emerging a few minutes later to have warm water and delicately scented rose water poured all over you before being wrapped in a fluffy towelling robe and served some delicious mint tea.

Whilst the types of Hammam offered by various spas may differ from the genuine Moroccan experience, the general process should be similar and will leave you feeling pampered, rejuvenated and refreshed. e all enjoy our luxuries from the cosmetic counters, but in the current economic climate a few ideas for saving money might be welcome, especially if they are good for you as well as your pocket! So, shut the bathroom cabinet, open up your store cupboard and fridge, as here are some suggestions for everyday toiletries that can be made from ingredients mostly found in your kitchen or nearby Pharmacie.

Face Mask - 1 tblspn Natural Yogurt (live is best) - 1 tblspn of roughly chopped peeled cucumber - 1 tlbspn of chopped parsley (parsley has natural antiseptic qualities) Puree the cucumber, parsley and yogurt in a blender till smooth.

Cleanse your face and cover with the mask. Leave on for 15-20 mins and then rinse off with tepid water. Moisturise afterwards. Any leftovers must be kept in the fridge and used within 24 hours or eaten as a delicious 'dip' or served as a sauce for fish!

The Morning after the Night Before!!

Sliced cucumber, sliced raw potato or COLD used tea bags are all individually, excellent remedies for dark circles and puffy eyes.

And talking of eyes, if you feel a stye coming, gently rub the affected area at least five times a day and before you go to bed, with something made of smooth gold. As wedding, or signet rings are perfect, it's easy to do and non messy! This is not an 'old wives' tale, it works brilliantly...

Bathtime Treat These bath salts can be made using any favourite essential oil, I prefer lavender oil as it is local and does help me sleep.

- 3 teacups of coarse Sea Salt - 1 teacup of powdered milk - 1 teacup of fine oatmeal (optional) - 20 drops of lavender oil In a large bowl, carefully mix the above ingredients and then store in a suitable jar with a close fitting lid. Throw a couple of handfuls into the bath under running taps – lie back, luxuriate and plan how to spend all the money you've saved!

I have made and used all of the above at various times and suffered no allergies whatsoever, but please be aware that people can experience different reactions, so use these recipes at your own risk.

BRIVE TAKES OFF

W

hen I spotted an advert on the Air France website in June for a new flight from London City to Brive I was delighted, being a Londoner with a second home in the Lot. I booked, not realising it was for the inaugural flight.

A champagne reception at the gate and on time departure was a good start, though arrival at Brive was very slightly delayed. My theory is that we flew round twice and admired the view because the ducks were not lined up for our arrival. The ducks were assorted dignitaries required for the welcome and photo-opportunity.

It was worth the wait when two fire trucks sprayed their hoses over the plane to welcome us. It's also the first time I've been met on the runway by hulking great rugby players offering free tickets.

On the plane I talked to the City Jet representative. This is only a summer/weekend route, and its success will depend on the predictable - bums on seats/revenue. They were selling tickets at low prices for a full service scheduled airline. City Jet is an Irish airline, based in Dublin but 100% owned by Air France/KLM. The City Jet for Air France network was first initiated in 2007 and serves a number of cities out of London City Airport.

There wasn't a bar, restaurant or shop at Brive airport or even a drinks machine. A visit to the ladies required hopping over the detritus left behind by the builders and checking that the paint was dry. But this isn't an airport requiring lots of facilities because there's no need to be there long.

Car hire, if you need it, is quick and easy. AVIS were efficient and it takes just three minutes to get to the A20. City airport being the smallest and most central of London's airports, it's also quick in and out at the other end.

This is a great option for a Friday/Sunday night getaway. Air France has changed its pricing policy so you can also now get one-way tickets without breaking the bank. And remember that there's no extra charge for a bag, a drink or a sandwich; and unlike some airlines, I can't see them thinking about charging to use the loo.

Since that first weekend, I've used the route again and can happily report that the airport toilets are now fully functional, the paint dry and a drinks machine and extra seating have appeared. Not sure if I'll ever make it to a Brive rugby match, but I will be using the airport again soon. Karen

veryone who has moved to France over the past 10 years will be aware of how the influx of étrangers has influenced many of the rural villages. This has been a huge change for the locals but they have welcomed and supported us and helped to resolve day to day problems that have arisen. In response to the kindness shown, three local ladies decided that they could help raise funds for community projects and the idea for a Marché de Noël was formed.

However, nothing is ever simple and it soon became clear that we would have to put our intentions on a formal basis by forming an association. "Aurora Borealis" was registered in March 2009. That done, we entered into discussions with the local school (which is in the heart of the village) to enlist support from the children and their parents to raise money for the two Plateau schools .The Maire was enthusiastic and promised a Christmas tree, lights and decorations around the village.

The plans for the Marché gradually began to take shape with offers of help, home produce and gifts for the Tombola. We were delighted with the range and diversity of the 36 stalls. The event was attended by about 350 people ! The book stall that had books in French, Dutch and English was busy throughout as was Chateau La Tuc selling vin chaud. But the Tombola was a runaway success with many winners returning again and again. One elderly lady who emptied her pockets and handbag of all her change managed a win with every one Euro ticket she bought and told us she was able to buy all her Christmas presents for her family with just nine Euros!

Father Christmas made several appearances throughout the afternoon dispensing sweeties to the children and the fishing game proved very popular with everyone winning a prize. Face painting and pottery decoration have been added to the extra attractions this year.

Fibres & Colours Festival Labastide-Murat Sunday, October 24th 2010 10am to 6pm Salle multimedia (below the Mairie) This new festival is going to be a celebration of natural fibres, including all aspects of wool, and arts and crafts in wool, flax or even hemp. It is organised by members of the association “Fils et Cordes”, enthusiasts of weaving, spinning, dying, knitting and bobbin lace activities.

The day includes demonstrations and crafts for sale sure to please a fibre artist from a novice to an expert !

You will be able to see and learn about : - The different stages from the fleece to the wool craft techniques and creations - Other natural fibres (like hemp, flax) - All aspects of wool and different sheep breeds and fleeces - The local sheep breed called the “Caussenarde” - Techniques of dyeing (from plants, food colouring, or chemical pigments…)

- Demonstrations of carding, spinning, dyeing, weaving, felting, bobbin lace and other fibre related skills.

- Workshop of how fibres were used during the Neolithic age - Exhibit of photographs and artistic crafts combining fibres and colours Our association is trying to promote the wool from the local sheep breed as well as regional fibres (flax, hemp) and to show the artistic, historic and economic richness of these fibres.

This event is a delightful agricultural and learning experience for the general public as well as shepherds and fibre enthusiasts.

Crafts for sale from various artists like handspun yarns, roving wool, lace, fibre crafts, knitted and felted clothes, etc. Kids workshop available all day : collage, felting, etc. For adults : dyeing, spinning, weaving from recycled fabric, or using a giant knitting bobbin. Free entrance. Food and drink available at the “knitters café” !

Is your Wood Good?

P

robably the most important factor affecting your fire or stove is the quality of the wood you burn. Wood should be well seasoned. Burning firewood that isn't seasoned uses all the heat from the fire to "cook" out the excess moisture and doesn't produce heat for your home. Seasoned wood will ignite and burn much easier and cause fewer problems with condensation and creosote.

Burning badly seasoned firewood will also result in a lot of deposits in your chimney which can be dangerous and can also reduce the life of your stove, flue pipe and chimney.

Good seasoned firewood should be a minimum of two years cut with one year stored outside open to the elements and one year covered. The most desirable wood for calorific value is oak (chêne) and is widely available, but chestnut (chataigner) is also a close second.

A good thing to look out for is to look at the end grain of the firewood - if there are a lot of little splits in the wood, then this is generally a good sign. If wood is cut and split, this will also assist in the drying process.

Signs of wet wood are smoking, blackened glass and a build up of residue in the chimney resulting in a reduction of draw.

Drying Herbs

G

ather your herbs early in the morning, after the dew has dried off, and preferably during a spell of dry weather. The ideal time is just before the herbs flower. The volatile oil content is then at its highest.

Herbs can be dried on their stems but this requires more air circulation than when leaves are dried on their own. If you are drying only leaves, try not to bruise them when taking them off their stalks. Herbs can be dried in a dark room. A fan heater may help. In hot dry weather, a garden shed or shaded greenhouse should be satisfactory.

The temperature in the drying area should ideally be around 30 degrees for 24 hours. Thereafter, 25 degrees is sufficient. Make sure there is sufficient ventilation to take moisture away – the moisture content of herbs is around 70% !

Rapid drying is necessary to change the condition of the leaves. They should be crisp, not leathery. It is best to dry herbs in single layers, on kitchen paper, net or muslin. Drying takes anything from 36 hours to several days, depending on the type of leaf and drying conditions.

Test by cracking or crumbling a sample – it should snap or powder quite easily. If it is leathery, continue drying. Herbs stored damp go musty.

To store, it is best to remove the stalks. If you prefer powdered herbs, crush with a rolling pin and rub through a non metal sieve. It is easier to judge the quantities of powered, dried herbs given in recipes if they are ready prepared and stored in tightly closed dark bottles or jars. Care must be taken when using wild herbs to ensure that they have not been contaminated by animals or crop sprays.

Remember that it is far safer to grow herbs in one's own garden! Tony
