2017-18 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2017-18 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2

W

ith a 97-7 record and three Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles to its credit, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team faces a new challenge as it approaches the 2017-18 season, attempting to blend seven newcomers with its five accomplished veteran returners. Despite returning just one starter in Preseason All-GNAC junior guard Tara Thompson, the Seawolves face high expectations again, earning the favorite’s nod in the GNAC preseason coaches’ poll and premiering at No. 4 in the initial WBCA Div. II Top 25 poll. “It’s never easy to play as the favorite, but I think our returners have grown accustomed to that role, and our new players would not have chosen UAA if they did not enjoy that kind of challenge,” said 6thyear head coach Ryan McCarthy, who has captured three straight NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year awards. “Our staff is excited to see what we can accomplish with this group as we try to teach them what ‘Mayhem’ is all about.” One of two players remaining from UAA’s 2016 NCAA Runner-up squad, Thompson was the team’s second-leading scorer last year at 8.9 ppg, while leading the GNAC and ranking sixth nationally with a .436 three-point percentage. Senior forward Shelby Cloninger, another Preseason All-GNAC honoree, averaged 8.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in 2016-17, while junior center Hannah Wandersee put up 7.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg and shot .506 from the field, along with a team-high 24 blocks. The Seawolves’ two backcourt returners are senior shooting guard Kaitlyn Hurley and sophomore point guard Yazmeen Goo. Hurley averaged 6.4 points and shot 39 percent from long range in 16 games last year, while Goo finished among the nation’s freshman leaders in both assists (4.1) and steals (1.7) per game. Alongside the veterans, all seven active newcomers are expected to play significant roles, including impact transfers Rainey Kuykendall (Trinity Valley [Texas] CC) Kian McNair (Portland State), Sydni Stallworth (two-time JC All-American at Pima [Ariz.] CC) and Rodericka Ware (Academy of Art). The three-woman freshman class is comprised of former Bay Area prep star Sala Langi (Pacific, Calif./Oceana HS) and local All-Cook Inlet Conference performers Nicole Pinckney (Chugiak) and Tennae Voliva (East Anchorage).

LEFT: Junior Tara Thompson was the second-leading scorer on last year’s Seawolf team that finished 30-2 overall and 20-0 in the Great Northwest AthleƟc Conference. Head Coach RYAN McCARTHY

O

ne of the brightest coaching talents in the NCAA ranks, Ryan McCarthy is in his sixth year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage program in 201718, having already taken the Seawolves to unprecedented heights. An Anchorage native, McCarthy has led his hometown program to a NCAA Div. II-best 97-7 record over the past three campaigns, capturing three Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles, ascending to No. 1 in the national poll for eight weeks, and reaching the 2016 NCAA National Title Game. Following a 29-2 campaign in 2014-15, UAA recorded a 38-3 mark in 2015-16 to set a new NCAA Div. II standard for victories in a season – among five NCAA records broken by that year’s club. In 201617, McCarthy repeated as the NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year and was the GNAC Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons, piloting UAA to a 30-2 overall record and the first 20-0 GNAC campaign in league history. Playing his program’s signature uptempo ‘Mayhem’ style, the Seawolves led NCAA Div. II in steals per game for the fourth straight season in 2016-17, along with top-5 ranks in scoring margin, scoring offense, scoring defense, assists, turnovers forced and turnover margin. The past three UAA teams have also each earned top-10 national ranks in scoring offense and turnover margin, while producing three GNAC Newcomers of the Year, three GNAC Tournament MVPs, a two-time GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, two AllAmericans, and the 2015-16 GNAC Player of the Year. Since taking the reins in 2012, McCarthy’s teams improved their overall victory total in his four campaigns (17, 19, 29, 38) and their GNAC victory total in every season thus far (11, 12, 17, 18, 20) -- figures that don’t even include a 67-61 exhibition road win over Pacific-12 Conference foe Utah in Nov. 2014.

THE McCARTHY FILE Educa on: B.S., Social Science Educa on, Northwest Nazarene, 2006 Record at UAA: 133-26, 5 seasons Overall Record: 147-97, 6 seasons NCAA Tournaments: 4 (2014, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17) NCAA Elite 8/Na onal Runner-Up: 2016 Conference Titles: 3 reg. season/3 tourney West Region Coach of the Year: 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 GNAC Coach of the Year: 2014-15, 2016-17

In 2013-14, McCarthy’s Seawolves finished 19-9 overall and made the NCAA playoffs for the first time under his leadership. UAA led the nation with 14.3 steals per game and was the highest-scoring team in the GNAC at nearly 80 points per contest. Despite a shortened roster, McCarthy’s first Seawolf squad rallied for a seven-game win streak to close the 2012-13 regular season at 17-10 overall and a 3rd-place tie in the final GNAC standings at 11-7. In five seasons under McCarthy, the Seawolves have produced 11 1st- or 2ndteam All-GNAC honorees, 17 Academic All-GNAC performers, and seen five players ascend to the professional ranks. Teamwise, UAA has posted victories over four NCAA Div. I teams, eight NCAA Div. II nationally ranked teams, and an unbeaten combined mark (35-0) against league rivals Seattle Pacific, Alaska Fairbanks, Western

Oregon and Concordia. Prior to UAA, McCarthy spent five seasons at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene from 2007-12. At NNU, he served as an assistant, interim head coach and associate head coach, helping the Crusaders to two NCAA Tournament berths and a .633 winning percentage during that stretch. After helping NNU to a 56-27 record as assistant coach from 2007-10, McCarthy stepped up as acting head coach in 2010-11 and led the Crusaders to a 14-13 record and a bid to the inaugural GNAC Tournament. In 2011-12, McCarthy was named associate head coach and helped pilot NNU to an 18-10 season. McCarthy played professionally for Tus Bramsche in Bramsche, Germany, in 2006-07, where he led the league in three-pointers and free throw percentage. He spent 2006 with the Central Oregon Hotshots of the International Basketball League, averaging 16 points, four assists and four rebounds per game. A 4-year starter and 3-year captain for the Crusaders from 2002-06, McCarthy was NNU’s Orrin Hills Male Athlete of the Year for 2005-06. He ranks third in program history with 256 treys over his career, setting the then-GNAC single-season record with 102 three pointers in 2005-06. Overall he posted 1,161 career points for the Crusaders. McCarthy graduated from NNU in 2006 with a B.S. in social science education. He is the father of two young children, Donovan and Aurora.

A

ssociate head coach Shaina Afoa returns to the Seawolf coaching staff for her sixth season in 2017-18, including her third as the program’s top assistant. Since joining Ryan McCarthy’s staff, the Anchorage native has helped the Seawolves to a 133-26 overall record, four NCAA Tournamanet berths, and three straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles. In Afoa’s first year as the lead assistant coach, UAA captured the NCAA West Region title and earned its first-ever berth in the National Title Game, while in 2016-17 she contributed to a record-breaking Seawolf squad that finished 30-2 and earned the first 20-0 league record in GNAC history. In March 2017 she was named to the prestigious Thirty Under 30 list of up-and-coming coaches by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. In addition to administrative and recruiting duties, Afoa has been a key to the development and success of UAA’s post players, working with such recent allleague standouts as Alysa Horn, KeKe Wright and All-American Megan Mullings. Afoa was a three-sport athlete at GNAC rival Central Washington from 200611, lettering four times in both basketball and track & field, plus once in volleyball. A three-year starter at center, she finished No. 2 on the Wildcats’ career list for blocks with 126, plus fourth in rebounds (599), sixth in games started (79) and 10th in field-goal percentage (.461). ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 16-year history. Founded in July 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 95 NCAA Division II Top 10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The GNAC’s successes in 2016-17 were topped by the conference’s fourth team national championship. Western Washington’s women’s soccer program marched to an undefeated season and the Division II championship. The Vikings tied only their first match of the season before winning 24 straight and beating perennial power Grand Valley State in the national final. Meanwhile, Alaska Anchorage’s volleyball team finished a whisper from becoming the fifth GNAC national title team, winning a conference-record 34 matches and advancing to the Division II National Title Match. UAA has had 26 top-10 national finishes in GNAC sports, surpassing Seattle Pacific (25) last season for the most among member institutions. Western Washington is third with 22. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

The Municipality of Anchorage A

laska’s most populous city is home to more than a few surprises. Aside from the human population of nearly 300,000, it is home to 1,500 moose and copious other wildlife. More than 50 glaciers stand in the nearby Chugach Mountains, one of the largest state parks in the nation. It’s the best mix of iconic Alaska and urban amenities. More than 135 miles of paved trails wind through the city, and salmon can be caught within the city limits. But Anchorage

also has a bustling downtown – complete with high-rises, nightlife and one of the nation’s fastest-growing culinary scenes. Anchorage is at the center of road, rail and air travel inside the state, making it a natural fit for visitors hoping to experience Alaska. Activities from the city range from bear viewing to glacier trekking, kayaking to gold panning. Pair adventure opportunities with Anchorage’s outstanding hotels, restaurants,

local breweries, and homegrown arts, and it’s a perfect place to explore no matter the season. Thanksgiving weekend is a special time for Anchorage. The GCI Great Alaska Shootout headlines a holiday weekend packed with events. The Town Square tree lighting, the Anchorage Museums craft fair and seasonal exhibits, and other big sporting events all combine to keep Anchorage jumping.

The State of Alaska A

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second-largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than 3 million lakes. Alaska also boasts 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage, and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Previously known as Mt. McKinley, the colossal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days.

Surrounded by an environment both urban and wild, the University of Alaska Anchorage offers a gateway to innovative thinking, learning and exploration. With nearly 18,000 students, UAA is the state’s largest university, situated in the heart of Alaska’s largest city, with community campuses in Homer, Kodiak, Soldotna, Valdez and Mat-Su. UAA students experience a hands-on education, in and out of the classroom, with unique opportunities in academics, research and leadership, both locally and globally. UAA’s students and faculty come from diverse backgrounds, yet the university community is firmly rooted in Alaska. Together, we celebrate the cultural richness of our Southcentral Alaska location, the ancestral homelands of the Dena’ina Athabascan, Ahtna Athabascan, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq and Eyak peoples.

UAA competes in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. True student-athletes, the Seawolves have achieved a plus-3.20 combined GPA each of the past two years. They have produced 14 conference titles, 18 NCAA team finishes—including national runner-up efforts for women’s basketball and volleyball—and 53 All-Americans in that span. UAA also placed in the top 20 (of 300+ schools) of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings the last two years, with a program-record rank of No. 8 in 2015-16. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a stateof-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community.
