Head Coach • 10th Season

I

n nine years at the helm of the UAA volleyball program, Chris Green has clearly established the Seawolves as a national contender year-in and year-out. In 2016, the AVCA National Coach of the Year led UAA to its first appearance in the NCAA Div. II National Title Match, its first West Region title, and the program's first back-to-back Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships. A four-time GNAC Coach of the Year (2009, '13, '15, '16) and three-time West Region Coach of the Year ('09, '15, '16), Green has now led UAA to NCAA Tournament berths in seven of the last eight seasons, capturing the program's highest-ever seeds the past three years with a No. 2 in 2014 and a No. 1 in 2015 and 2016. (In the 28 years before Green's arrival, the Seawolves made just two NCAAs). Currently riding programbest streaks of nine straight winning seasons and four straight NCAA appearances, UAA has won at an .824 clip over the last four campaigns, including a 63-9 (.875) mark in league play, finishing runner-up by just one match in both 2013 and '14, before capturing the GNAC crown in 2015 and 2016. The last three campaigns have seen Green's Seawolves establish school records for best winning percentage and fewest losses – 21-6, 27-3 & 34-3 – while producing two First Team All-Americans and two GNAC Players of the Year, plus the 2016 West Region player- and freshman-of-the-year honorees. Under Green's tutelage, the Seawolves have now produced four GNAC Players of the Year (Calli Scott, 2009; Jackie Matthisen, 2011; Katelynn Zanders, 2015; Morgan Hooe, 2016), eight All-Americans, five GNAC Newcomers of the Year, three GNAC Freshmen of the Year, 14 All-West Region performers and 26 All-GNAC Team honorees. Green's 2010 and 2011 squads recorded identical 18-9 marks and advanced to the NCAAs, with the 2011 team coming just one win shy of sharing the GNAC title. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 GNAC preseason coaches' poll, UAA wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coachof-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the then-best winning percentage (.742) and posted the second-most victories in program history (23). UAA capped its historic 2009 season by winning its first-ever NCAA match, upsetting Hawaii-Hilo in a 5-set thriller.

2017 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES VOLLEYBALL COACH GREEN, cont. from page 3

In 2008, Green took the reins of a Seawolf program that had gone 17-58 over the previous three campaigns and produced a solid 15-14 mark, along with UAA's first All-American in senior Rhea Cardwell. Following four straight NJCAA Final 4 appearances and the 2007 national title at Western Nebraska Community College, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Green built a powerhouse program in his nine seasons at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I championship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green's seasons. In his final three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green's tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC's players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. In 2011, Green was inducted into the NJCAA's Hall of Fame (encompassing all sports) for his accomplishments at WNCC. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991 and his master's degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

In four collegiate seasons at UOP (2011-14), she racked up 796 kills and 484 total blocks, leading the team in blocking her final three campaigns and finishing among the program’s career top 10 in attack percentage and all blocking categories. As a senior in 2014, Howard helped UOP to its best season in 10 years with a 24-7 record, and led the West Coast Conference in attack percentage at .394. Associate Head Coach 3rd Season

A

fter helping UAA to the best two seasons in program history since his arrival, Sheldon Carvalho is back as head coach Chris Green's top assistant again in 2017, and for the first time in the role of associate head coach. Last fall, Carvalho was chosen the 2016 AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year after helping the Seawolves to a program-best 34-3 record, its second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Div. II National Title Match. In his rookie campaign, UAA posted a then-program-best 27-3 record and produced a three AllAmericans. Under his tutelage, UAA has produced eight All-GNAC honorees, five All-Americans and captured the top seed for the NCAA West Regional Championships both times. Behind the scenes, Carvalho spearheads UAA's world-wide recruiting efforts, with his first class already producing the 2016 NCAA West Region and GNAC Freshman of the Year in Diana Fa'amausili. Carvalho came to UAA after serving two seasons as head coach of American Leadership Academy, a high school program in Spanish Fork, Utah, where his teams posted top-4 regional finishes and made the Class 2A State Tournament in 2013 and 2014. He also coached at ALA from 2008-09, leading the school to its first-ever appearance at State. In between those stints, Carvalho was the head coach at junior college program Western Texas College from 2010-12, collecting three consecutive 20-win seasons and a 67-40 overall record. At WTC, his 2011 and 2012 squads were the NJCAA Region V champions and made appearances at the national tournament. Carvalho coached two All-Americans, four all-conference players and helped WTC to its first-ever national ranking – reaching as high as No. 11. He was honored as the District E Junior College Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. Carvalho took his first head coaching job in 2007 at Kahuku High School in his home state of Hawaii, leading his team to an Oahu island championship and a 14-2 record. He broke into the coaching profession at Brigham Young-Hawaii University, where he served as a student assistant on the Seasiders' 1996 and 1997 NAIA national championship clubs, and helped legendary head coach Wilfred Navalta with the 2000, 2004 and 2005 teams that played at the NCAA Div. II level. As a player, Carvalho lettered four years at Kauai High School before spending one season on the men's club team at BYU-Hawaii. He earned a B.A. in secondary math education from Brigham Young (Utah) University in 2004 and a masters in counseling psychology from Chaminade University in 2008.

THE GNAC

ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 16-year history. Founded in July 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 95 NCAA Division II Top 10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The GNAC’s successes in 2016-17 were topped by the conference’s fourth team national championship. Western Washington’s women’s soccer program marched to an undefeated season and the Division II championship. The Vikings tied only their first match of the season before winning 24 straight and beating perennial power Grand Valley State in the national final. Meanwhile, Alaska Anchorage’s volleyball team finished a whisper from becoming the fifth GNAC national title team, winning a conference-record 34 matches and advancing to the Division II National Title Match. UAA has had 26 top-10 national finishes in GNAC sports, surpassing Seattle Pacific (25) last season for the most among member institutions. Western Washington is third with 22. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.
