2017-18 SEASON PREVIEW

2017-18 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES MEN’S BASKETBALL

2

A

fter consecutive 21-win seasons, the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team will take on a decidedly new look in 2017-18, featuring 12 newcomers and no starters among its lone three returning veterans. Luckily for 14th-year head coach Rusty Osborne – the winningest coach in program history – the Seawolves have reloaded with proven talent. Among the dozen new faces are four Div. I transfers and two junior-college standouts who will be instantly thrust into major roles. Joining the Seawolves from Div. I University of the Pacific is the senior trio of 5-10 guard Maleke Haynes, 6-9 forward Jacob Lampkin and 6-4 guard D.J. Ursery. Lampkin averaged 6.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game for the Tigers last year, while Ursery has joined him as a Preseason All-GNAC selection after averaging 6.0 points and 1.3 assists. An LA native like Ursery, Haynes played in 52 career games at UOP, averaging 2.5 points and 1.9 assists. Meanwhile, former North Dakota State guard Malik Clements joins the fray after posting 6.3 ppg and 2.5 rpg for the Bison last year, notching six double-figure scoring efforts. From the JC ranks, the Seawolves have added swingman Josiah Wood and combo guard Jack Macdonald. Wood was a two -time all-conference selection at Butte (Calif.) College and the Sierra League player of the year as a senior at Reno’s Galena High School, while Macdonald averaged 10.8 points and earned First Team All-North Coast Conference honors in his lone season at Ohlone (Calif.) College. The most veteran player in the Seawolf program is junior forward Brian Pearson, who appeared in 40 games his first two seasons prior to redshirting in 2016-17. Pearson’s redshirt partner last year was senior guard Drew Peterson, who showed impressive flashes as a reserve during the 2015-16 campaign when he shot a team-best 50 percent (23-46) from long range. Sophomore Curtis Ryan is the lone returning active player from last year. One of three Australians on the team, the 6-9 forward should see an increased role after playing intermittently as a rookie. Among the team’s six true freshmen, five hail from The Last Frontier, while Sydney native Brennan Rymer completes the trio from Down Under. Alongside Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year Austin White of Ninilchik, the other homebred talent includes Eric Jenkins and Kylan Osborne of Dimond’s 2017 ASAA state-title squad, South Anchorage’s Alex Adams, and Bartlett’s Ryan Trailer.

Senior guard D.J. Ursery was tabbed an All-GNAC Preseason Team honoree a er transferring from D-I program Pacific.

One of three Pacific trans er, guard Maleke Haynes was an LA prep star and avearged 1.9 assists in 52 games at UOP.

Senior guard Drew Peterson had three doublefigure scoring efforts as a key reserve and led the 2015-16 squad with 50 percent three-point shoo ng.

Junior forward Brian Pearson made strides during last year’s redshirt campaign and should provide a steady defensive presence in the low post.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to 12 straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tourney appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 239-122 (.662) over the past 12 years, including victories over 11 Division I teams and 15 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the secondbest winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2016-17 campaign was Osborne’s fifth with 21 or more victories. During his head coaching tenure, Osborne’s squads have also produced four All-Americans (including 2012 Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY Taylor Rohde), three CoSIDA/ Capital One Academic All-Americans, 10 All-West Region performers and 22 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first- or second-team honorees, while 18 Seawolves have moved on to play professionally. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the GNAC Coach of the Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6),

In Orton’s final season of 2011-12, former recruit Taylor Rohde was the GNAC Player of the Year and Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year for the Seawolves. He earned a B.S. in health and physical education from Eastern Oregon and his masters in physical education from Eastern Washington in 2001. ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 16-year history. Founded in July 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 95 NCAA Division II Top 10 national team finishes in 15 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The GNAC’s successes in 2016-17 were topped by the conference’s fourth team national championship. Western Washington’s women’s soccer program marched to an undefeated season and the Division II championship. The Vikings tied only their first match of the season before winning 24 straight and beating perennial power Grand Valley State in the national final. Meanwhile, Alaska Anchorage’s volleyball team finished a whisper from becoming the fifth GNAC national title team, winning a conference-record 34 matches and advancing to the Div. II National Title Match. UAA has had 26 top-10 national finishes in GNAC sports, surpassing Seattle Pacific (25) last season for the most among member institutions. Western Washington is third with 22. UAA sponsors nine of the GNAC’s 16 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Surrounded by an environment both urban and wild, the University of Alaska Anchorage offers a gateway to innovative thinking, learning and exploration. With nearly 18,000 students, UAA is the state’s largest university, situated in the heart of Alaska’s largest city, with community campuses in Homer, Kodiak, Soldotna, Valdez and Mat-Su. UAA students experience a hands-on education, in and out of the classroom, with unique opportunities in academics, research and leadership, both locally and globally. UAA’s students and faculty come from diverse backgrounds, yet the university community is firmly rooted in Alaska. Together, we celebrate the cultural richness of our Southcentral Alaska location, the ancestral homelands of the Dena’ina Athabascan, Ahtna Athabascan, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq and Eyak peoples.

UAA competes in 13 NCAA collegiate sports. True student-athletes, the Seawolves have achieved a plus-3.20 combined GPA each of the past two years. They have produced 14 conference titles, 18 NCAA team finishes—including national runner-up efforts for women’s basketball and volleyball—and 53 All-Americans in that span. UAA also placed in the top 20 (of 300+ schools) of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings the last two years, with a program-record rank of No. 8 in 2015-16. In September 2014, Seawolf Athletics cut the ribbon on its new home, the Alaska Airlines Center, a stateof-the-art 196,000-square-foot sporting event, training, sports medicine, special event and performance venue that is shared by the Anchorage community.
