Swords School Celebrates 25 Years In Style A

week of activities to mark the 25th anniversary of one of Swords’ most famous schools, St Colmcille’s Girls National School culminated with a reunion of the school’s first ever pupils. This unique gathering of the 1986 Junior Infants class provided the high point in a memorable week for the school. The reunion, which was held in the school, was the brainchild of school principal, Bernadette Murtagh and was attended by a large gathering of 30 year old ladies and some retired teachers. Great excitement was generated as old friendships were rekindled and existing ones reinforced. Many of those present had kept up contact throughout the years and remained good friends, while others had only met for the first time since leaving school. In some cases, after a few seconds of doubt, accompanying screams indicated that recognition had been achieved and a new friendship was about to be made. Many

retired teachers, including former principal, Anne McDonagh greeted the girls like old friends. This friendly atmosphere and easy mixing of pupils and teachers ensured that the night was an unqualified success.

By Patrick Finnegan The school had been transformed into a trip down memory lane, as various classrooms were revisited and old videos and DVDs of Holy Communions and other significant school occasions of yesteryear were viewed. One of the

girls, Deirdre Keaney gasped as she exclaimed, That’s my dad”, as she watched wide eyed as her class Communion Day was on video. She also spoke of her complete respect for Ms. McDonagh. “When she pointed her finger in the air, normally with a set of keys in her hand, you knew instantly that you were in trouble,” said Deirdre. Current principal, Bernadette Murtagh, was clearly delighted with the large turnout and she reminded the gathering of another notable female institution that is 25 years old. “While Oprah is ‘wimping away after

a quarter of a century, St Colmcille’s is going from strength to strength,” she said to rousing cheers from everyone. She praised the work ethic that has always been in evident in the school. The week of celebrations included the raising of the school’s fourth Green Flag for Transport, by County Mayor Ken Farrell and the opening of a special Silver Anniversary Sensory Garden. This garden was officially opened to mark the celebrations. It is the work of several pupils, parents and teachers who designed and created this unique gift to the school. Several late evenings and many hard working hours were spent getting this project off the ground. The school is grateful for all the support and enthusiasm of so many mums and dads. To mark the occasion, the school is very happy to announce the setting up of the School Orchestra Project. For years, it has been the school’s dream to have its very own orchestra and now that dream is a reality. See Picture on page 10

The Biggest Circulation Of Community Council said vital points had been brought up that the Council needed to act on. “We definitely feel that the county capital is somewhat lower down on their list of priorities. A lot of funding seems to go into Skerries and Malahide, but Swords seems to lose out.” “The Tidy Towns Competition is vital for the area so we’re really pushing the Council to get the park cleaned up as quick as possible,” she continued. “The Tidy Towns committee do recognise all the hard work being done by the County Council, but more of an effort needs to be made in maintaining the area.” In response to the complaints, Council administrative officer, Martin Sweeney said that he was confident there would be a “significant improvement” in the park before the judging commenced.

Council Forced To Clean Up Swords Park By Jennifer McShane Following our story on the rather unsightly state of Swords Park last week, it seems the Council will now be cleaning it up. The Council received complaints from the local Tidy Towns committee that the park was in a “terrible state.” Cllr Darragh Butler said the Council needed to make a strong effort to clean and maintain the park, especially when the judging for the Tidy Towns Competition was only weeks away. It was brought to their attention that there was a “huge imbalance of funding” and as a result of this, Swords had lost out big time. Speaking to the County Leader about the meeting, Lorraine Sutton from the Swords

Lusk Toddlers Show The Way

The Tiddle Toddlers, a group of children, mainly from the Lusk area took on a very important challenge recently. They took part in the Danone Big Toddle for Barnardos, a fun sponsored walk to help create a better start in life for vulnerable children in Ireland their own age. The team of 16 children and their parents met at Red Island in Skerries and started the toddle in a flurry of bubbles and as the toddle became a race to the playground the children seemed to flash by very quickly. Fionnuala Jones, local childminder and mother, who organised the event said she was “delighted the whole event went off so well and delighted to report that the children raised a wonderful amount of €731.00 in aid of the charity.” She is already looking forward to organising next year’s toddle. Pictured at Red Island in Skerries are the Tiddle Toddlers getting ready for their charity walk. Included are, Raina and Seán McFadden, Dáithi and Odhrán Girvin Fionnuala Jones (organiser), Daragh Keating, Conor Geraghty, Isabella Jameson, Sally Nolan Grassick, Savannah O’Shaughnessy, Hannah Farrell, Geraldine Dunne, Luan O’Connor and Casey O’Shaughnessy.

Malahide Shuttle Service Setback Malahide commuters are no closer to getting a much needed shuttle service in the town after the Department of Transport have turned down yet another licence application for the service. A spokesperson from the Malahide Shuttle Service has expressed disappointment about further delays to the service: “Our application has been refused yet again more or less because of the same reasons the Department of Transport refused it last year, namely the

protection of Dublin Bus. They do not appear to recognise that a local service, run reliably and always on time, will be extremely beneficial to the locals.” The spokesperson added that Dublin Bus “cannot be relied on by those who need to catch a train or otherwise be on time.” The Malahide Shuttle Group are still awaiting another appeal decision sent in March. “We have been expecting an answer since early May, so the decision is well overdue at this stage.”

Determined Balbriggan Tidy Towns Won’t Be Defeated By Jennifer McShane As we mentioned in last week’s edition of the County Leader, the Tidy Towns Committee in Balbriggan were hit with a serious setback. Essential equipment was stolen from the town’s storage shed. Speaking to the County Leader, Zoe Nelson from the committee says you can never be too careful when it comes to safely securing your equipment. “We’re just urging everyone in the area and indeed others in the Tidy Towns Competition to be extra Zoe Nelson careful,” she says. “We learnt the hard way and are only after discovering that we weren’t insured which we are devastated about.”

The Biggest Circulation Of The committee are making an appeal to residents to donate any equipment or other materials they have no use for to the committee. “If anyone has anything which they think we could spruce up and use ourselves we would be so grateful.” The committee are also looking for a new storage location after local Gardai advised them that it could happen again once the equipment was replaced. “So if anyone knows anywhere or has somewhere that we might use as storage facilities we’d love to hear from you.” She added. Despite the misfortune, Zoe says the committee will soldier on and are as determined as ever to win the Tidy Towns competition. “Everything is still going ahead and we’re putting our energies into new projects and concentrating on the competition. Balbriggan won’t be defeated,” a defiant Zoe concluded.

t the buzzing open air market at Skerries Mills on a Saturday morning, one of the first people I meet as I walk in to the courtyard of the iconic mill is organic farmer Paddy Byrne. His family farm in Strifelands, overlooking Skerries is close to the gates of Ardgillan Castle and has been in his family for four generations now. In the 1980s due to economic circumstances, Paddy moved out of farming establishing a very successful flooring business. “Small farmers like my family were squeezed out by bigger farmers who got contracts with the multiples like Tesco.” Yet as the new millennium dawned, despite having plenty of work laying floors, farming was in Paddy's blood and he decided to return to it. The Barretstown 5K Fun Run and Family Day which took place in Malahide Park recently was a huge success. Visitors flocked from all over the North County and further afield to participate and enjoy the day despite the unpredictable weather conditions. Over 400 runners took part in the 5K Fun Run, which was only one of the events on offer. Children were entertained all day in the children’s village; a large area of inflatable castles, slides and obstacle courses. There was also a children’s sports day with games such as the egg and spoon race and wheelbarrow race. Never deterred by the weather, even when the heavens opened, the children simply donned raincoats and carried on having fun. The PiratesCove

Express train and Clarkes Horse and Carriage were also on hand to give families rides’ around the park. Face painters, balloon modellers, medieval re-enactors and magicians as well as some familiar cartoon characters were at hand to entertain the children. For the adults, the Red Bull Road Show, the Dublin Fire Brigade Car Wash, NYPD, German Polizia and Mccarlen Formula 1 car along with some top of the line cars such as Porsche and Ferrari were parked on the castle lawn. A football tournament, Malahide’s Strongest Man Competition and an outdoor step class also took place on the day. The Artane Senior Band, a jazz band and a pipe band provided the musical entertainment and the day was run very smoothly by over 60 Barretstown volunteers. Approximately €50,000 was raised on the day, which will go to the Barretstown charity. Barretstown works to rebuild the lives of children affected by serious illnesses and their families, through a activity camp.

Innovative Fundraiser By Rush School A extremely successful and innovative fundraising drive took place in Rush National School recently. The school participated in the ‘Cash for Clobber’ programme, holding an annual clothes collection on the 3rd Thursday in May as part of their Green Schools initiative. The clothes are donated by the public and packed into bags for collection by ‘Cash for Clobber,’ who then recycle these clothes through Cookstown Textile Recyclers. They supply a large amount to Ms.Quin’s Charity shops, which are then sold to raise money for the National Council for the Blind in Ireland (NCBI). For every bag collected, ‘Cash for Clobber’ donates €1 to the school. This year over 1000 bags were collected. Rush National School, in fact, holds the record to the highest amount of bags collected in the nationwide ‘Cash for Clobber’ Pic: JR programme.

Swords School Marks 10th Anniversary The Old Borough National School in Swords marked its 10th Anniversary with a difference as the entire school got involved in building a mozaic. This mozaic, which is composed entirely of glass and mirrors, is a map of the centre of Swords. Renowned Irish glass artist, Deirdre Rogers was on hand to help and directed the children in the project. There was great excitement as the children got to work on the mozaic. Speaking to the County Leader, principal, Ann Murray Woods, said the project generated great excitement from everyone involved. “It’s a fantastic project. We’re not only marking the 10th Anniversary, we’re also marking the year of the craft as well. It’s the first time anything like this has been done in the area, so all the children are very excited to be involved. We can’t wait to see what the mozaic will look like once its finished.” The project, which started last Tuesday, will be finished in the coming weeks and unveiled in the last week of June.

Speaking to the County Leader, Skerries Transition Year co-ordinator, Katie Corbett couldn’t praise the students enough for all their hard work on the project: “The project was absolutely fantastic,” she said enthusiastically. “Because we are in a recession, we came up with the idea for the project. Our older generation gave our younger generation tips and taught them skills and vice versa. The project got the whole community active and involved and we could really see the community spirit from everyone. It was wonderful.”

The Transition Year students at Skerries Community College had every reason for celebration as they won an array of awards this year for their projects. Student, Isabel Cooke won two awards at the SciFest this year - she looked at a method of water testing to warn locals of the arrival of jellyfish on the Skerries coast. Students, Bronagh Moore and Emily Dawson invented and tested their own sun cream and won the PharmaChemical Ireland International Year of Chemistry 2011 Award. The teachers and students have been working hard for the last two years to encourage a sustainable transport approach to travelling to and from school. The ‘One Good Idea’ project is run every year by the Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI). Team Tree to One’s project focused on the area of climate change. The girls decided to raise awareness by educating local primary school children on the importance of trees as carbon sinks and the negative impact deforestation has on the world’s climate. The team visited local primary schools and taught the students through dance, drama, song and art workshops on the part trees play in reversing climate change. The girls carried out a huge amount of research for their project, developing an extensive website which they updated with information for use in the primary school sector and for general education purposes. The team featured on RTE Radio 1 show Mooney Goes Wild and got the opportunity to meet with former president Mary Robinson at the Mansion House. She was discussing the subject of climate change and its impact on the poorer societies in the world. The team were presented with their trophy by Pat Rabitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and Mr Brendan Halligan, Chairman of SEAI.

New Product Provides Solution To Moss Moss, like most lawn weeds, primarily take advantage of bare areas, but does not kill out existing grass as some people believe. Unsuitable grass varieties, poor drainage, drought, soil compaction, diseases, improper mowing are common reasons for turf failure leading to moss or other weed problems. Osmo Progreen Moss Remover is a new product to the Irish market and is available at White’s Agri, Blake’s Cross,

Ballough, Lusk. It is an organic based fertiliser for lawns, that on application, indirectly dehydrates the moss down to root level through its complex form of organic potash and additional micro-organisms. It simply turns the moss to dust over a three week period and disappears. After treating, the moss will turn black, as it dies back. This dead moss should be raked or scarified, and removed, to allow the grass to branch out and prevent the moss re-establishing. Call Whites at 018438521 for further information.

Plans For Malahide Festival Malahide Chamber are currently planning a Festival for the summer. The proposed dates are for the weekend of 23rd and 24th of July. Last year was a great success when the Chamber revived the old Malahide Festival and it proved to be a very positive catalyst for stimulating business in the town, not just during the Festival,

but also afterwards. It is hoped that the upcoming festival will encourage people into the village for a positive experience. This is an expensive and time consuming exercise and the local Chamber are looking for people to volunteer to help out, in any way they can. Businesses should consider what you can do to be part of the Festival and they are also looking for ideas and people to volunteer their time as Marshals etc.

dreary winter belongings. The simplest step is to get some storage boxes. They’re simple, tidy and you’ll have much more space to work with for your Summer re-vamp.

Garden Nothing says summer is here like your garden. It’s time to dig out those spades and shovels and really make your garden shine. For those who like DIY but without as much hassle, it’s best to go and buy your potted plants in your favourite summer colours and plant them as they are. You will find all the supplies and materials you need in your local hardware store so you won’t have to go miles to spruce up the garden. Even just cleaning up all the weeds and old plants will really make a difference. Summer means you will also get the chance to dust off that BBQ and spruce up that outdoor furniture.

Sunshine Bathroom The problem with having a lot of toiletries and cosmetics is storage. A lot of bathrooms will be small, so you need to make the most of your space. Once you have put any excess things into these storage boxes, hopefully you’re creating that feeling of minimalism and hygiene. Now try adding a plant and also some nice air fresheners, a new floor mat and voila you’re bathroom has just had a make-over.

Kitchen There are lots of simple and effective ways to cheer up your kitchen for the Summer months. This is probably your most used room in the house, so you’ll want it to look as nice as possible. Re-

house& home paint your surroundings with those bright and breezy colours, not only will it look great but these colours will have an uplifting

effect on your mood too. Adding some culinary gadgets like some quirky egg cup holders, teapots or place mats will do wonders for the

kitchen and it’s the little things like that that really make a difference and will make your kitchen stand out all summer long.

The Taoiseach has made a number of very important selections in his nominees and I welcome the inclusion of people from outside the general political arena. This will add to the quality of the debate we will have in the months and years ahead.” Party leader, Micheál Martin said: “Darragh has a proven track record both in business and politics. He will be an effective leader of the Fianna Fáil group and will work constructively with other parties and Independent Senators. The Fianna Fáil Seanad team comprises 14 talented individuals, all of whom I expect to play a leadership role in holding this Government to account and in the renewal of the Fianna Fáil party.”

Swords Historical Society Opens Well The Swords Historical Society will be opening St Colmcille's Well on Saturday June 11th from 3pm to 4pm. Bernadette Marks from the Historical Society said: “It’s just a small thing we do every year. Not a lot of people would be aware that June 9th is the Feast of St. Columcille, who is the Patron Saint of Swords, so it’s just a little tribute we do to honour that,” she said. All are welcome.

You told him up in Heaven Franny for you I have a place. So enjoy your time in Heaven Franny, You earned your eternal rest. For when you were upon this earth you were the very best. Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time, I ask you for a very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour and not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. S.C
