SEAN DOUGLAS FALCONER SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE PORTFOLIO

SEAN DOUGLAS FALCONER One of my favorite aspects of architecture is working with a team to see an idea come to fruition, and in the process myself and the team learning something new. This could be called learning through design. It is something I’ve come to love about architecture. This portfolio displays projects in which I learned through design during my Master of Architecture at Syracuse University. Thank you for your time and consideration

Without empathy, that subconscious in-feeling, no architectplanner can produce anything but a stillborn environment for his clients, however logically and carefully worked out and consistently constructed. Without such in-feeling the listener or reader can hardly partake in the collective, baked together memories of another human being, who inevitably must tell of them in the outwardly disordered way that life is really live. Empathy must be hoped for, cherished. - Richard Neutra (Life and Shape)

brad lynch visiting critic studio fall 2013 vacation residential — 2743 widewater lane skaneateles lake, ny

The goal of the studio was to create a client and design to their programmatic needs: The clients, an older family of four, wanted a year round small cabin on Skaneateles Lake with room for guests. The cabin was sited to leverage sun exposure and frame the best views of the lake. By angling the main axis southwest and pitching the roof overhang sun exposure was maximized during the winter and minimized in summer months. This angle also framed the best view of the southern glacial gorge meeting the lake. The cabin itself reacted to the dichotomy of the site, the forest and lake. The guest wing was embedded beneath the forest floor. It becomes part of the forest with a tree invading its space. The kitchen and living area open to the lake with glass that can be slid open to create a seamless transition outside. Splitting these two spheres are the service spaces. This includes the stairway up to the master suite. The master suite is a floating volume, which hovers between the lake and forest with a view of each. Material took precedent from the traditional Upstate New York stone farmhouse; slate and reclaimed barn wood with modern additions of plywood, finished concrete floors, and black ionized steel hardware. From the forest entrance to the leveraged views of the lake the cabin works with the site to fulfill the needs of the client.

comprehensive studio spring 2013 mixed-use gamze kahya (aydÄąn, turkey) 212 E. fayette street syracuse, ny

212 E. Fayette street is 50,000 SF of mixed use live/work housing on the site of an underappreciated park in downtown Syracuse. The site is strategically situated along one of the city’s main transportation lines. An intervention of densification along this route will further augment the current trend of downtown repopulation and revitalization. At the loss of the park, the ground floor is designed as an urban piazza with square footage for shops and a restaurant. In addition, two elevated courtyards and a green roof terrace rise above the piazza. All residences and offices are formed around these outdoor leisure spaces to create outdoor courtyards. This openness is reflected in the building facade. The facade presents a series of gaps to facilitate the flow of air and sun exposure into the interior of the project. The COR-TEN steel facade, strong corner form, and low height blend the project into the city.

pedestrian bridge spring 2012 infrastructure — onondaga creek, syracuse

The project’s goal was to create a structurally optimized connection between a foot path at water level and the city above at street level. Through structure optimization modelling a form of forces could be visualized and components calculated and sized. Compressional and tensile forces are on display as separate structural systems; steel tubing and steel cable. The result is a pedestrian ramp-bridge which provides the Creekwalk a connection to the downtown of Syracuse.
