Michael Symon’s award winning Roast restaurant played host to a special broadcast of News/Talk 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith Show. This invite-only young professional networking event and broadcast included a special one hour “Big Four” Roundtable with Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Paul Gieleghem, chairman, Macomb County Board of Commissioners, and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

Food, glorious food… Circle your calendar for Saturday, August 28 and head for Eastern Market for the continuing Taste of Eastern Market Series featuring metro Detroit chefs. Book Cadillac Executive Chef Jim Barnett will be on deck from 10 AM to Noon. Taste of Eastern Market series spectators through the preparation of seasonal recipes and introduces shoppers to the rich bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables Michigan has to offer. Featured chefs and nutrition experts instruct and perform demonstrations related to the preparation, storage, preservation, and health benefits of food products found at the Market. Curious cooks watch chefs as they turn the Market’s seasonal produce into simple and delectable dishes. The focus during the season is on healthy and nutritious food. Recipes are distributed during the demonstrations and the week’s featured dish is sampled on the spot.

from our tables to yours A Taste of 24grille Roasted Heirloom Beets & Goat Cheese Salad

A Taste of Roast Scallops and Creamed Corn with Bacon - serves 6 appetizer portions 5 ears of corn 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil 1/4 pound thick-cut bacon, cut into 1 inch strips

2 ounces goat cheese

1 medium onion, diced

1 teaspoon of chives

1 garlic clove, minced

1/8 teaspoon of truffle oil Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup arugula 1 tablespoon candied walnuts 1 teaspoon of balsamic reduction (home made is preferred, otherwise bottled) 3 tablespoons of roasted heirloom beets cut into cubes 1 teaspoon walnut vinaigrette 1/4 teaspoon infused Tahitian vanilla bean truffle oil to garnish Whip goat cheese, chives, truffle oil, and salt and pepper until smooth. Allow mix to rest to soften and mix until blend is evenly mixed. Add to pipping pastry bag, or take a coffee filter and cut a small hole at the pointed tip. Toss washed arugula in a vinaigrette dressing, lightly dress all leaves and pile high in the center of a salad plate. Dress beet with balsamic reduction and vinaigrette. Place beets and walnuts on-top of arugula. “Zig-Zag� drizzle with a hint of balsamic reduction and garnish with Tahitian Vanilla Bean Infused oil. 

1 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste 2 cups corn stock or chicken stock 1/2 cup creme fraiche 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro Grated zest of 1 lime 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 12 large (U-10) dry packed sea scallops Salt and black pepper To make the creamed corn: Cut the kernels from the cobs and set the kernels aside. (Use the cobs to make the corn stock.) Heat a large saucepan over medium heat and glaze the bottom with olive oil. Add bacon and cook, stirring as needed, to render the fat and brown the pieces, 5 minutes. Add onion and sweat it for about 45 seconds. Add garlic and continue to cook, stirring, for another 30 seconds. Add reserved corn, salt and cook for two minutes. Pour in corn stock (or chicken stock if using) and bring to a simmer. Cook until the liquid reduces to approximately one cup (about 10 minutes). Add creme fraiche and simmer until mixture begins to thicken, about 3 minutes. Stir in butter. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in cilantro and lime zest. Check for seasoning and keep warm. Heat a large saute pan over medium high heat. Season the scallops with salt and ground black pepper. Add vegetable oil and place scallops in pan. You may need to cook the scallops in two batches, do not overcrowd. Cook until golden brown, about two minutes. Turn scallops and finish for about 1 more minute. To plate, divide the creamed corn and place 2 scallops atop corn on each plate and serve.

WESTIN WEDDINGS Wedding bells will ring all summer long at the Book Cadillac with more than 25 wedding celebrations booked for June, July and August brides. This summer weddings went beyond our historic hotel to the infield of Comerica Park. How accommodating are we to our guests? When a newlywed couple asked for a special late night buffet we made it happen just as they requested – direct from d ow n tow n D e t ro i t ’s famous Lafayette Coney Island.

From Tailgate Party to the Italian Garden Kara Pinto and Mike Norkus met ten years ago at a University of Michigan football tailgate party. And the rest of the story is does not have an ending, but a new beginning when the couple marries this summer at the historic Most Holy Trinity Church in Corktown. The reception will be held at the Italian Garden – a far cry from a tailgate party to be sure. However, the couple expects to have just as much fun on their wedding day. Loyal to Starwood properties, Kara and Mike will head to Bali and the St. Regis for honeymoon bliss. 4

Take me out to the ballgame June 19 was a big day for Andrew and Whitney Hess of Livonia. The couple was the grand prize winner of the WWJ AM 90th anniversary Wedding on the Diamond

celebration at Comerica Park. They submitted the winning essay entry telling why they should get married at Comerica Park. This winning duo traded an umpire for a minister and said their vows in front of post-game baseball fans at the Tigers and Diamondbacks night game. The Book Cadillac rolled out the red carpet for the newlyweds for their two evening visit that was a part of their grand prize. Andrew and Whitney also enjoyed a couple’s massage at spa19, dinner at 24grille and another dinner at Roast. The honeymoon suite included a special welcome amenity and two monogrammed Westin robes. Friends of the newly married couple also booked rooms to add to the celebration. A Mystical and Memorable Wedding The wedding of Saira and Shariq Kahn was a traditional East Indian celebration. Thanks to the creative work of Emerald City Designs the staging set a magical tone for all. Book Cadillac Executive Chef Jim Barnett worked with the couple to secure a special catering company to prepare traditional meals in keeping with the couple’s cultural and spiritual requirements. Tradition made room for a lively reception with a DJ for hours of dancing.

I looked around Detroit for several years trying to find the right condo/loft and didn’t find anything that was just right. When I saw the Book Cadillac materials, I could tell that it would be a unique and beautiful place. I thought that living above a hotel was a neat idea and wanted to be part of the excitement. I meet lots of new friends every day. They all want to pet me, but I insist on playing hard to get especially with Book Cadillac Luggage Attendant Sylvester. It’s very comfortable here and you gotta love those Heavenly Dog beds. What’s your favorite thing about your new home? Ashley (Book Front Desk), Andrea (Book Concierge), Michael (Book door attendant), Sylvester, and Steven (both Book luggage attendants) are my favorites. I get really excited when I see them. Steven likes me so much that he wrote a children’s book about me. Maybe someday he will let me read it. If I am lucky, Mr. Freisen (Book General Manager) might even let Steven distribute the book during the holiday season (nudge…nudge). I also enjoy playing in the hallways. Best way to enjoy downtown Detroit? Running around Lafayette Park!

What is your advice to other dogs contemplating a move to Westin Residences? Be nice to the concierges, and they will give you endless treats.

Kevin Morin is part of a joint venture team for the new Fountain Bistro restaurant in Campus Martius Park, just a short walk from the Book Cadillac. The park offers a great place to relax and catch some sun and in the winter it’s the best place for outdoor ice skating. What’s on the menu Kevin? We are serving breakfast and lunch. We want to start serving dinner in the near future. We are currently waiting on the liquor license that we expect will take around six months for the licensing process to be complete. The restaurant will be very unique because of how much it will need to change season to season. The restaurant is very small. So, using the outside areas of the park will be

essential. During the summer, we imagine people spread out throughout the park enjoying our food, drinks and the view. We are confident that the summer business will be very successful. The winter business may be more challenging as we will be limited to our small space, but will have all the extra traffic that the ice skating rink will create. We will be running the concession tent next to the ice skating rink and may use that tent as an additional way to serve customers. continued on page 7

Breakfast will be a combination of Lavazza Italian coffee products, muffins, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and quiches. We are going to be serving gourmet sandwiches for lunch. We are planning to have a full dinner menu once the liquor license is in place. Certain menu items will change based on the time of year, but the most popular items will be available year round.

RENEWING CAPITOL PARK Plans are underway to bring renewal to the Book Cadillac neighborhood. Detroit’s Capitol Park, formally the city’s bus transportation hub, will get a new look and purpose. The Downtown Detroit Development Authority is overseeing a $1.1 million redevelopment program to redesign the triangular property and encourage new business to move to surrounding buildings. The park is bounded by Shelby, Griswold and State Streets. Capitol Park was the former site of Michigan’s government from 1823 to 1847. After state government moved to Lansing the remaining courthouse on Capitol Park became a high school until a fire destroyed it 1893. Another note of the park’s history involves the Underground Railroad when Seymour Finney built a barn

there and used it to hide slaves en route to Canada. A State of Michigan historical marker can be found at Capitol Park that commemorates Finney’s Barn. Capitol Park is a historic district and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
