veryone has the ability to heal themselves and to help others in their healing process. Universal energy flows through all of us. But this flow of energy
can become blocked during periods of stress and illness. Reiki is an immensely simple yet powerful method of healing using the hands, which can remove these blockages and restore the flow of energy around the body. This energizing force can empower us to feel an emotional wellbeing, to respond to situations creatively, and to act throughout our life as a channel for good. The concept of life force has been recognized in many cultures for thousands of years, and similar concepts are used in many other complementary therapies, such as acupuncture and shiatsu, as well as in physical and spiritual practices, such as Tai Chi and yoga. In China this life force is known as Qi, in Hinduism as prana, and by the ancient Egyptians as ka. The beliefs and practice of Reiki emerged in 19th century Japan and from there were taken to Hawaii, California, and the western world. The Japanese characters “

consist of “Rei” meaning “universal”, and “Ki” meaning “life force”. Reiki’s arrival in the Western world was largely the result of the activities and dedication of Dr. Mikao Usui, a Christian Professor of Theology at Japan’s Doshina University in the 19th century. He spent much time healing the sick and troubled and taught them the healing system that he dubbed “Reiki”. After some years, he came to believe that people needed to play an active part in their own healing if the effects were to be long lasting. He therefore also began teaching the “Five Precepts of Reiki”. These aimed to help people develop faster a positive mental and spiritual attitude to complement the healing. 1.
