Spiritual Pilgrimage And God said, “I will be with you” Exodus 3:12 I did not grow up going to church. Although I believed in God and the story of Jesus, I did not feel adequate to be in church. I did not know bible stories, how to read the bible, or even how to share my faith. I simply felt inadequate. As I grew up and questioned my beliefs I felt a call from Jesus to follow Him. I did not know what that would entail or even how drastic it would change my plans. I just knew that I believed in Him and that I could not believe in Him without pursuing him whole heartedly. As I began feeling called to participate in God’s global mission, I also felt my old insecurities in the church rise up. I began asking God, “Who am I that you are calling me to go?” just as Moses

was questioning his identity. It was then I realized that God answered Moses’ question by just saying that He would be with Moses. I realized that God just needed me to trust him. I knew that I was not saved by my “great” qualities and I am also not called to serve by those qualities. I am saved and called because of the loving Father God is. I have come to a point of understanding who I am and who God has called me to be. It is intimidating to look at my “goals” that I feel God has called me to. However I go with the faith that God will guide me, lead me, and protect me. I now leave with confidence and authority through the relationship that God has offered to me with him.

“Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, selfcontrolled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.”

PRAY Values

There are a few important values that I see as non-negotiable in my everyday life.

Peace I value peace in my heart, soul, household, city, nation, and world. If I am not seeking peace in every aspect of life, then I am not seeking God. I need to seek peace within my own heart and soul by asking the Lord to search my heart and reveal anything that is unclean so that I can repent. I need to seek peace in my family by loving with the gentleness, grace, forgiveness, compassion, and faithfulness that God has loved me with. I need to seek peace in my city by loving my neighbor with hospitality, humility, and by considering others better than myself.

Relationships I value relationship in my everyday life with family, friends, neighbors, mentors, and God. Relationships are non-negotiable in my life because they provide accountability, encouragement, and love. As I journey in life that will place me in locations that are distant from people who constantly provide accountability, encouragement, and love, I will need to be extremely intentional about communicating via email, phone call, or Skype. I will need to be intentional about sharing needs, pains, and celebrations.

Application of Scriptures I believe that the scriptures are not meant to just be read, but to transform and become flesh. This is non-negotiable because Jesus resurrected and ascended so that the Holy Spirit can come and empower us to carry out God’s mission that is communicated through the scriptures. This requires me to read, memorize, teach, and live out my convictions. James 2:26 “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”

Yahweh Most importantly I value my relationship with God –Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Without God I would simply remain a broken person in a broken world without love. I live this value through prayer, reading scripture, solitude, and community. I have conversations with God throughout my day and ask for his guidance and compassion in the community. I express all of my worries, frustrations, uncertainties, happiness, joys, and celebrations. More than anything it is the anointing of God that gives me the power to proclaim His good news in my life and my community.

Lifestyle

There are a few important lifestyle issues that I see as non-negotiable and plan to live out.

Rest I begin with rest as the first important lifestyle because I recognize my nature to work without rest if there is a need (which there always is). I am beginning to see the necessity for rest in order to avoid burn out, maintain peace and nourish healthy relationships. I will do this by taking a Sabbath once a week.

Stewardship I hope to live a life that represents good stewardship of wealth, knowledge, wisdom, resources, time, gifts, relationships, energy, environment and opportunity. Stewardship is non-negotiable because I cannot love God, my neighbor or seek justice without being a good steward of what God has entrusted to me. I will live this out by asking God the purpose of what he has entrusted to me or placed in my life. I will live simply. “Earn much, consume little, hoard nothing, give generously and celebrate living.” Dr. Viv Grigg

Learner I will always be a learner in life despite accomplishments, social status, or economic status. We are called to love the Lord, our God, with our mind. In order to love God with my mind I will constantly learn about the person in front of me to know how to love him or her. I will constantly learn about the current issues of my community so that I can discover how to respond as a man of God. I will always search to learn so that I can continue to transform my own life and transform my community all to bring glory to God.

Justice Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” God is in constant battle to build his kingdom here on Earth as it is in heaven and a large battlefield of the war is against injustice. This requires me to be aware of the direct and indirect result of my choices. I also need to be sensitive to how to respond to the injustices that are in my life.

Appendix: Goals Goal Discipleship Movements

Present I have begun a discipleship-focused ministry among the homeless of Whittier. I have ran trainings at House of Grace with the knowledge that I have received thus far.

2-Year Progression I will learn from Pastors in India about discipleship and learn from anyone who is currently creating movements in India.

Mobilize first generation missionaries

I am currently learning how to fundraise as a missionary as well as learn how to prepare to enter the mission field.

Overseer

I am currently overseeing a ministry that I have planted in Whittier. I am also praying to be transformed into the man described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. I have been reading my bible and asking God for guidance to who I am in the church. I will continue to encourage those around me as they also are spiritually growing. I am constantly praying for discernment. I am trying to simplify my life by being a good steward.

I will be a missionary in training for these next two years in India. I will see how I can prepare and take a team back to India after these two years. I will continue to pray for transformation. I will also seek advisement from mentors from the MATUL program/ experience.

Edify the Church

Be a Good and Faithful Servant

I will learn from Pastors of how they are edifying the church body. I will continue to pray for my home church as well as encourage the church via email and videos. I will meet the twothirds world to see what ordinary life looks like. I will pray for how I am to respond as a servant of God.

Future I will focus on making disciples who will make disciples among the poor. I will train others on how I have learned to create discipleship movements among the poor to lead movements themselves. I will encourage, equip, and create structures in order to help send out first generation missionaries like myself. I will have a family and be part of a community in which I will hold to the description of an overseer in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. I will be a leader in the church who will encourage people in their giftings, I will equip people for their callings, and I will model how to love and manage one’s family. I do not know what this will look like for the entirety of my life. I do know that it will require me to be an obedient servant with ears that are sensitive to what the Holy Spirit is saying.
