Following the success of a Wet Leisure profile and continuing conversations with major swimming pool and spa authorities, such as SPATA and the BSPF, Pro-Mark has found there is NO dedicated publication focused on the swimming pool industry targeting the construction and architectural sector. SWIMCONSTRUCT magazine is the only dedicated publication highlighting the direct link between the two industries. The first issue was released in January to coincide with the two major industry events, UK Pool & Spa Expo (24-26 January 2013) & SPATEX (3-5 February 2013) and was well received by the industry. The issue was full of industry news including expo previews and

The magic of hydromassage Golden Coast’s luxury Sundance Spa makes a wish come true Golden Coast is delighted to announce that the very first order to be filled under its exclusive UK distribution deal with Sundance Spas is for a luxury Marin 880 hot tub for Make-A-Wish Foundation UK. The charity, which grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions, has long been a favourite of Golden Coast and its staff. Their continuing support is to be extended by Sales Manager Adam Clark this April when he runs the London Marathon to raise funds. Devoted to improving health and well being through the benefits of superior hydrotherapy, Sundance Spas are engineered to deliver customers with an experience of the highest quality. Like every Sundance product, the Marin 880 benefits from the Company’s heritage of innovative features, which have been specially developed to improve peace of mind and ease of body. Featuring five individual Accu-Ssage therapy seats – each

equipped with its own supportive head rest – the model includes an array of Fluidix hot tub jets to work on the arms, legs and back. The unique Fluidix design employs low pressure over traditional ball bearings, ensuring that there are no wearing parts – for low maintenance and a long life. The model also utilises innovative CLEARRAY water purification technology, which neutralises waterborne pathogens and maintains water quality without using gas or chemicals. Available for retrofit to any spa, including older Sundance models, it combines with other convenient features, such as the MicroClean Ultra Filter, to make Sundance hot tubs easier to maintain than any other on the market. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams says: “MakeA-Wish wanted to order a spa for a particular wish child, and family, and we were very pleased to be able to help. We hope they will enjoy many happy hours using it.”

New completions and contracts for FT Leisure Ltd

FT Leisure Ltd has recently completed the design, supply, installation and commissioned the water treatment systems for the refurbishment of Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock, Staffordshire. The 1960’s facility contains a 33m pool and a learner pool. Both filtration systems have been replaced and the 33m pool has been split into a 25m competition pool and separate baby friendly Accredited Teaching Pool, using a static boom. A moveable floor was also retrofitted to the deep end of the main pool. The competition-standard pool is the crowning glory of the Stafford Road leisure centre’s £6.5M refurbishment that opened in March 2013. The whole project also encompasses an eight court sports hall, air conditioned dance studio, café, bowling alley and 18 hole golf course. FT Leisure Ltd has also been appointed to design, supply, install and commission the water treatment systems for two pools at Witham Leisure Centre, which will start on site at the end of May and on the De Vere Gardens development. Witham Leisure Centre will replace the ageing Bramston Sports Centre in Bridge Street, Witham; it will be built on

land that was previously part of Maltings Academy in Spinks Lane. Bramston Sports Centre was built in the 1970s and its facilities are now dated and fail to meet modern standards. The £9.5M project will include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, a separate 13m x 13m, 3.4m deep learning/diving pool with moveable floor, a fitness suite, two dance studios, two treatment rooms, sauna and steam room and two squash courts. De Vere Gardens, in the prestigious Kensington district of London, will provide 97 luxury apartments together with a private hotel with fitness and leisure amenities including a 25m three-lane lap pool and spa, family rooms and entertainment facilities. FT Leisure Ltd will design, supply, install and commission the two water treatment and filtration systems, all water/ air features associated with the spa pool and the LED pool lighting systems. The water treatment system incorporates a full BEWA IV Ozone system. FT Leisure will be working for Main Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd. Located on the site of the former Kensington Park and Kensington Palace Thistle hotels, the scheme will provide two new seven-storey buildings and one five-storey block incorporating retained façades. FT Leisure specialises in the provision of innovative products and professional technical services to the commercial, municipal and private swimming pool industries. Their range of services includes the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and/or refurbishment and maintenance of water treatment and filtration systems, moveable floors, booms and disabled access platforms, ozone and UV sterilisation, wave machines and leisure water features.

Something for everyone at SPATEX 2013 Internet celebrity helps Golden Coast celebrate 20th SPATEX Over the years, Golden Coast, the UK’s largest independent distributor of wet leisure products, has developed a reputation for bringing something special to SPATEX and their 20th appearance certainly didn’t disappoint. From the results of the annual State of the Wet Leisure Industry survey to a showcase of 12 of the UK’s most innovative new products, the Golden Coast stand had something for everyone.... even a celebrity! Andy James, the star of “Andy’s Answers”, a popular series of 40 short YouTube tutorials, was on hand throughout SPATEX, meeting visitors and signing autographs. With more than 40 years experience in the electro-mechanical trade, Golden Coast’s in-house engineer’s relaxed presentation style and ability to explain issues clearly – with humour where appropriate – have made him an internet hit. Visitors to the Golden Coast stand were introduced to a selection of Golden Coast’s latest innovations for the pool, spa and sauna: from pool cleaners and chemical controllers to state-of-the-art saunas and bespoke lighting solutions. Some of the new and exclusive products Golden Coast brought to SPATEX 2013 were:

spas – all requiring control of standard equipment and enhanced with specialist features and applications. A number of specialist options can be incorporated, including: automatic chemical control using the Etatron AG-Select R module and remote control of the booster pump and blower using a LED or touchpad. For complete customisation, Golden Coast allows installers the unique opportunity to brand the front of the control panel with their company logo and details – reinforcing their professional image.

Reinforcing its position at the industry’s leading innovator, DEL of France – through its exclusive UK distributor Golden Coast – has waved goodbye to the traditional white endpiece with the introduction of two new products. Bringing together the latest technology and design styles, MOON and DUNE provide customers with fully customisable cover solutions to ensure that DEL – and Golden Coast – can meet the needs of even the most demanding pool project. DUNE

The new eOne range of solenoid metering pumps from Etatron has been specially developed for energy efficiency and longlasting performance. Able to detect interruptions or failures to suction or discharge, the pump offers protection against under and overloading issues, such as blocked pipework and empty tanks. Additionally, energy consumption changes in relation to discharge pressure result in minimal power consumption.

For the domestic pool market, Etatron has developed the ePool dosing system, which features a no-nonsense intuitive controller. This energy-efficient dosing system automatically controls pH or redox and is supplied with a filter pump interlock as standard – ensuring long life. Priced under £600, it is an affordable dosing solution which can be retrofitted.

Developed for use with both the ePool and eOne, eControl is the latest addition to the Etatron monitoring range. Suitable for use with pH, redox, chlorine or conductivity, it is particularly well-suited for use with the ePool pH, where an erosion feeder is required for water sanitation and full control is required

PoolMaster and SpaMaster control panels

Developed over a number of years, Golden Coast’s PoolMaster and SpaMaster control panels deliver a high level of control that is simple to install and easy to operate. Golden Coast can cater to any need: from a domestic pool right through to a large commercial facility with multiple pools and

Electric and solar versions of MOON and DUNE are available. For customers looking for something a bit special, MOON electric is available in a look which is sure to meet their needs. Managing Director of Golden Coast, Jamie Adams said, “Every year we aim to bring the most exciting developments to SPATEX. We are always on the lookout for innovative new products and, as this year’s 40 new additions to our product offerings has proven – we have been spoiled for choice. “We hope that everyone attending the show had the opportunity to drop by and discover a few exciting ideas from us that will help enhance their businesses in the weeks, months and years ahead.”

25m competition swimming pool completed using new approach to swimming pool design and build A new approach to the building of swimming pools and dry sports facilities by Competition Pool Solutions (CPS) is set to change the procurement process for designing and building new sports facilities in the UK market. The approach adopted by CPS enables organisations to procure swimming pools and sports facilities using a turnkey solution, reducing significantly the cost and project times involved in such schemes. One such project has just been completed at Woodhouse Grove School, in Bradford. CPS were invited to construct a 25m six-lane county standard competition pool, after the initial tender estimates, by other providers, of £3.9M meant the school could not afford the project. CPS provided a bespoke design and build solution (1,300sq m) for Woodhouse Grove School, which cost £1.99M and the whole project took 40 weeks to complete. The cost was all-inclusive, comprising bespoke design, construction, all professional fees and competition equipment. David Humphreys, the Headmaster of the School, said “Without the involvement of CPS and the expertise of their management team, we would never have been able to get the competition pool and the building constructed for a price we could afford. The process from start to finish was expertly managed, and having only to deal with CPS, rather than a number of contractors, was a real plus” Jim Gordon, a Partner at CPS, said “There are solutions on the market but they are standardised off-the-shelf solutions, with no flexibility in terms of design and construction methods. The process we follow at CPS means we can offer a fully bespoke

design and build solution to the clients’ exact requirements every time at a price they can afford and delivered on time. “Using our approach to the design and build of sports facilities, our clients can get up and running sooner and at a cost they can afford. For example we can produce a 50m eight-lane competition pool, with all equipment and ancillary services (to ASA & Sport England Requirements), at a cost of £4.5M, which equates to £1,700 per sq m. If you look at some recent 50m pools that have been completed, the cost can be any where between £7.5M and £9M, which is significantly more expensive than ours” The team at CPS, researched the market and looked at the various offerings together with the processes that were involved in getting a project finished and decided there was a better way in executing sports facility projects. Gary Wake, the lead architect at CPS, said, “A lot of sports facility schemes tend to be very complicated and drawn out and follow an approach that hasn’t changed for years. What we wanted to do was offer a quality service and product, but one that enabled the client to only have to deal with one organisation throughout the process. The process we now have minimises costs and overall project times. “The team is involved at every stage of the process to ensure we can value engineer every project at the outset and reduce costs without compromising on quality. All of our skills and expertise are applied from day one of the process, whether that be the bespoke design, M & E or construction, hence the efficiencies in cost and timings. With the squeeze on finances and the lack of facilities in all sectors, we can offer local councils and other organisations a viable and extremely competitive timely alternative”

Josef Craig opens new £4M pool Paralympic swimmer Josef Craig made a real splash when he opened the new Jarrow Community Pool. The gold medal winner performed the official opening and took the first public swim in the £4M facility. Josef, who was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2012 and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, was joined by the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Eileen Leask, at the launch event. The pool, which was built using a combination of funds from the former Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Building Schools for the Future programme, is on the site of Jarrow School. The 25 metre, four-lane pool has a hydraulic floor meaning the depth of the water can be adjusted, and a deep end to allow competitive swimmers to dive. Schools will have use of the pool during school hours in term-time. Outside these hours the pool will be available for swimming

lessons and regular bookings from swimming clubs as well as community groups such as Scouts and Guides. There will also be a schedule of activities and group sessions such as family and adult only swims which people can book onto in advance. The Mayor said: “Providing the very best in community leisure facilities is part of our commitment to regenerating the Borough. “The pool will be a real focal point for the whole community and we want to see all sorts of local clubs and groups as well as our schools making the most of it. “We’ve already had one international swimming star come out of Jarrow, and who knows how many more will swim their way to success in this new pool. “I hope that by providing first class facilities such as this swimming pool, we can continue to nurture the young talent we have here in the Borough. “A great deal of careful planning and hard work has gone into this project and it’s fantastic to see it come to fruition.”

PWTAG The UK’s authoritative guidance on swimming pools and spas The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) was established in 1984 as an independent organisation dedicated to raising standards in swimming pool water treatment. PWTAG has a membership drawn from a wide range of relevant statutory, voluntary and professional organisations with an interest in pool water treatment and pool users. It is also able to pursue work without any commercial or other influence. The Group is a focus for debate and improvement in operational and management standards in an area that comes under significant financial and political, as well as technical pressure. The Group has a major role in the treatment and quality of public and private swimming pool water by: ••monitoring and advising on important issues and developments ••infections, pool management, pre-swim hygiene, and new processes ••reviewing existing advice and publications – on design, spa pools, cryptosporidiosis, filtration, and asthma ••publishing books, reports, guidance notes and press releases on pool atmospheres, and interactive water features, including PWTAG’s definitive book, Swimming Pool Water ••research projects ••developing formal guidelines such as a Code of Practice based on the Group’s book. This work covers water in all swimming and spa pools, whether under public or private ownership and management.

Swimming Pool Water was first published in 1999 and its unchallenged reputation has earned it steady sales. 14 years on, the principles of pool water treatment have barely changed, but there are new developments, new ideas, research and new concerns. Some of the issues addressed by PWTAG arise from within the Group. Many come from outside, either as specific requests and suggestions or as a consequence of PWTAG’s advisory role. In general, PWTAG acts as a focus for debate and improvement in management and operational standards. The current Chair of PWTAG is Janice Calvert. She is assisted by Vice Chair, John V Lee. The Treasurer is Steve Carder and part-time Secretary, Brian Guthrie, is the only paid officer. These four, plus Howard Gosling ( of SPATA) and Ralph Riley (representing the interests of swimmers) make up the executive committee. PWTAG is a direct source of advice and help for pool managers and operators, local authorities and industry. The Group is also active behind the scenes, working with governmental and other agencies. Each year, hundreds of formal and informal contacts are made. Some of this work consists of allaying fears raised by press accounts of academic work, and PWTAG is able to call on professional and technical expertise within and beyond its membership. Aimed at anybody planning or running a pool, the Group has enjoyed steady growth and influence over the years thanks to its reputation. In the last few months PWTAG has been rolling out a new, online code of practice and a syllabus and arrangements for accredited pool operator training.

PWTAG’s brief includes

research, work on guidelines and standards, product assessment, advice to pool managers and operators as well as to local authorities such as environmental health.

Alba Pools has an award-winning reputation for providing the best facilities to its customers. Offering a quality assured design, supply and installation service to match individual requirements, the Company is skilled in working with commercial and domestic clients all across the UK. Alba Pools excellent reputation is due to the Company’s track record of providing a consistent, quality and comprehensive service, with the aim of being second to none within the swimming pool industry. As a leading swimming pool and associated equipment supplier in the industry, the Company provides a whole range of different products. Suppliers include; Aquaflex, Astral, Biolab, Certikin, Fluvo, Golden Coast, Harvia, Original Style, Plastica, SCP, Waxman Ceramics, and Waterco. Formed in 1985 as SB Pools by Stephen Booth, the Company traded very successfully as a small domestic pool contracting business for ten years and then amalgamated with Alpha Leisure (Scotland) Ltd.

During that time, the Company was heavily involved in the building of private and small/medium commercial pools, as well as the service and maintenance of these pools. A loyal workforce that always provided a leading edge over competitors of the time undertook this work. The amalgamation with Alpha Leisure (Scotland) Ltd in 1995 allowed the Company to increase its client base and offer new services to clients of both SB Pools and Alpha Leisure (Scotland) Ltd. After five reasonably successful years, the amalgamation ended and 2000 saw the formation of Alba Pools. In December of that year, SB Pools Ltd was reacquired, which resulted in the current full company name - Alba/SB Pools Ltd. With its formation, the Company’s goals were set higher than ever before, and included developing larger projects as well as widening the area of work. The growth of Alba Pools continued at such a pace that in March 2003, the Company moved to a new, purpose-built head office incorporating extensive office, showroom and warehouse CONTINUED PAGE 10 >

AstralPool UK Ltd – “bringing added value to the supply chain” As one of the leading designers, manufacturers & distributors of all wet related equipment and services for both the commercial and residential swimming pool markets, AstralPool UK Ltd are proud to be named as one of Alba/SB Pools Ltd leading suppliers within this specialist market sector. To further compliment this relationship, AstralPool Uk Ltd are able to draw upon the expertise and technological support of its parent company, Fluidra, the multinational Spanish group who specialise in the application development for sustainable use of water in pool and wellness facilities. Both the manufacturing/design (Fluidra) and the distribution (AstralPool UK Ltd) capabilities are intrinsically linked, thus offering a significant selling point to pool builders such as Alba/SB Pools Ltd who are tasked with satisfying employers requirements via a contracting route. Architects and specifiers who may be involved with these types of projects can take advantage of this service by drawing on this added value at the relevant stages of design.

Principal contractors can enjoy the reassurance that they are receiving a solution based on a joint approach between their pool builder and the pool equipment manufacturer/distributor, alongside all the relevant service providers. This results in all the required members of the design team ensuring that they are “round the table” as early as possible. The client, be it a local authority or private developer, can rest assured that the end product is achieved through full collaboration between all members of the supply chain and the employers requirements are fully realised. Alba/SB Pools Ltd of Brechin, Scotland recently handed over a 7m x 3.7m stainless steel pool for the new St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge, Scotland. The new facility will double up as a sports hub, opening its doors to the public at evenings and weekends. Again, the client’s requirements were stringent and the new pool formed an integral part of the overall sports facilities. AstralPool UK Ltd worked closely alongside the team at Alba/SB Pools Ltd and the principal contractor, Balfour Beatty, to help realise this aim.

The project portfolio of Alba Pools is wide ranging, and all showcase the technical expertise of the Company. Work at Avenue End Primary School in Glasgow resulted in the installation of a hydrotherapy swimming pool for this special needs school. Installation provided a level deck hydrotherapy pool with air handling unit, chemical control, heating systems, a sensory LED colour change underwater lighting system, and multiple water features - all controllable from within the pool hall area thanks to manual selection and auto program. An emergency shutdown facility was also provided. Woodend Hospital also benefited from a hydrotherapy swimming pool installation by Alba Pools. Located in Aberdeen, the pool helps to take care of rehabilitation of sport and accident injuries. The development comprised of refurbishment of pool filtration, chemical dosing and upgrade of control systems to modern standards and reliability. All were designed, installed and are maintained by the Company. Also in Aberdeen, Alba Pools worked at Raeden Centre, providing a hydrotherapy swimming pool within a special needs school and residential facility. This provided installation of a traditional hydrotherapy pool, with an air handling unit, chemical controls and heating systems. The Company’s portfolio is not limited to Scotland, however, and stretches throughout the UK. The Alveston Manor Hotel in Warwickshire is a Swimming Pools & Allied Trade Association

(SPATA) Gold Award winning pool and illustrates the Company’s commitment to quality and value further south of the country. Also in England, Alba Pools provided a hydrotherapy pool at Newfield Primary School in Blackburn, which will benefit pupils of this special needs school. Work included the installation of a large deck hydrotherapy pool with an air handling unit, chemical control, heating systems, underwater lighting and speakers, and large ramp access to the pool. The development included design and installation, and the Company also maintains the pool. Along with its reputation for the very best work, Alba Pools is registered to many bodies within the industry. It is an ISO 9002 company, as well as a member of the Chartered Institute of Sport & Physical Activity (CIMSPA). It is also an approved Constructionline contractor. One of the first companies on the SPATA approved listing of swimming pool contractors for domestic and commercial pools, the Company has won many awards over the years, including in 2004 the prestigious Peter Geekie Pool Business of the Year Award. Over the years many of the Company’s projects have been successful at the SPATA pool industry awards. This year, the Company has been awarded Silver in the Commercial Pools category, while last year saw Alba Pools win three awards, including Gold in the Commercial Spas & Health Pools category, Silver in the Special Requirement Pools category, and Bronze in the Residential Indoor Pools category. With a promise of quality without compromise on every project, Alba Pools is certain to provide more first class installations of swimming pools, therefore increasing an already sky-high reputation within the industry.

Hanovia’s SwimLine™ UV System for professional pool quality Hanovia UV technology guarantees reliable and efficient chloramine removal and disinfection technology is included as standard, and allows facilities to cut power consumption by limiting operation to only what is needed to maintain the required de-chloramination level. The system’s controller provides continuous UV monitoring to alert for low UV, power failures or other changes.

Hanovia’s SwimLine™ UV range provides safe and efficient removal of chloramines from pool water, while also acting as a disinfectant and providing you with standards the professionals demand in swimming. The SwimLine also incurs lower capital and operating costs than comparable UV systems.

The Hanovia UVLux™ broad spectrum UV lamps used in the SwimLine range feature the latest technology in medium pressure lamps and optimal efficiency. The system also incorporates an automatic quartz sleeve wiping system that reduces maintenance and extends lamp life. The compact SwimLine is available in a range of U-shape, S-shape and In-Line configurations for easy installation in new-builds or incorporation into existing water treatment systems.

Water passing through the system is exposed to UV light, which destroys chloramines, the harmful by- product of chlorine disinfection, responsible for strong odours, skin and eye irritation as well as damage to pool equipment. UV light also inactivates microorganisms on a cellular level and, when coupled with chlorine treatment, the SwimLine provides a highly effective second barrier against infection by chlorine-resistant microorganisms such as cryptosporidium.

Hanovia’s UV systems are already widely used in pools and spas around the globe, from the UK to Australia. One of the most prominent UK installations is Nirvana Spa in Berkshire. Widely regarded as one of the UK’s most prestigious spa facilities, Nirvana has nine pools, each filled with pure spring water drawn from over 200 metres beneath the ground. Each pool is treated with a Hanovia UV system, including the “Celestial” floatation pool, the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pool containing salt imported from Israel’s Dead Sea.

The SwimLine contains features designed to reduce operating costs by eliminating wasted power and materials. Power Stepping™

Another celebrated UK installation is the Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter, the first leisure centre in the UK to install a UV system.

That was back in 1994, when the centre had just undergone a complete refurbishment and a Hanovia UV system was chosen to replace ozone. The Hanovia system performed so well for the subsequent 16 years that when the time came for an upgrade in 2010, the centre didn’t think twice about replacing it with another Hanovia system. Other users of Hanovia’s UV system include global five star hotel chains, private schools and a number of English Premiership football clubs, including 2012 European Champions.

About Hanovia

Unless this evaporated water is not properly removed from the pool atmosphere, it will turn to condensation and settle on surfaces such as walls and windows, and lead to costly maintenance issues.

the pool heating and ventilation alone. This means that Munters’ systems must not only create the optimal climate, but reduce running and maintenance costs. By preventing condensation, costs associated with repairing or restoring building fabric are significantly reduced.

As a global leader in energy efficient air treatment, Munters is committed to developing solutions to combat the effects of high humidity in a wide range of applications. For swimming pools, Munters have created a total ventilation system that uses an intelligent controller running Munters’ proprietary controls software with our proven desiccant dehumidification technology. Unlike other technologies, the Munters solution enables humidity and temperature to be precisely controlled independently from each other. This means the need for fresh air ventilation is minimised and conditions are maintained to their optimal level all year round despite fluctuating external conditions.

When Oldham Community Leisure (OCL) built the Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, they selected Munters to create the perfect indoor climate. Since its installation, the system has significantly reduced condensation and maintenance costs while prolonging the life of the pool building. “Munters [pool systems] means the climate is always warm and refreshing” says Chadderton Wellbeing Centre. The pool system has also reduced ventilation energy costs by 30%, as well as reducing CO2 emissions. Full case study available upon request.

FETA Importer beware

Swimming pool importers and installers could find themselves in deep water if they do not conform to new EU regulations affecting electric motors and fan efficiency that came into effect in the New Year. The first phase of new regulations requires all equipment that contains a fan with an input power of more than 125W being imported into Europe to comply with minimum fan efficiencies. While old stock can be used up, newly imported stock that does not meet the appropriate fan efficiency is not entitled to carry the CE label and cannot be legally sold in the EU. “Imported heat pumps will struggle to comply as many fan manufacturers outside the EU have made no provision for this regulation in their product ranges,” comments Richard Carrington, Calorex Managing Director. “We know this because we’ve contacted a number of major Asian fan manufacturers,” he reveals. “These regulations highlight the technical gap between European and many overseas manufacturers,” says Carrington, who is also the President of the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association and a member of the SPATA technical committee. “Many are still totally focused on bottom line price and copying elementary design without putting any investment in research and development including regulatory compliance,” he adds. “Importers should be aware that they will be liable for any issues that arise through non compliance with CE.” This regulation is just one of several recently issued EU directives that affect heat pumps and dehumidifiers. Low cost imported product is struggling to keep up with the changes, causing the technical gap between high quality regulated EU produced product and low cost imports to grow. Phase I started on 1 January 2013 with further restrictions to be introduced with Phase II on 1 January 2015.

Carrington said there was a worrying glut of heat pumps on display at the recent Lyon Pool Show many of which simply did not stand up to close inspection. “This should be of concern to importers as they can be responsible for product compliance within the territories that they are selling into” he says. Carrington concludes: “Some of those heat pumps do not stand up to close scrutiny with physical features that, despite first impressions, are not CE compliant. These are fundamental issues concerning health and safety and we have to show due diligence. “Don’t be fooled by appearances and don’t be seduced by price,” he added. “Beware of short cuts because if it sounds too good to be probably is.” A UK based manufacturer, Calorex has been researching, designing and supplying its comprehensive range of environmentally friendly heat pumps and dehumidifiers designed for swimming pools for more than 35 years. The Calorex range is distributed in the UK by Certikin International Tel. 01993 778855

A new level of safety and efficiency in pool water disinfection the regular cleaning and dismantling of chemical injection points. By completely eliminating this task, and any contact with hazardous substances, we can greatly improve the safety of a pools technical operation and the plant room environment”.

Taking into account the cost of salt, water, energy and maintenance, the Hyprolyser system can typically reduce the cost of chlorination and associated system maintenance by 30% or more compared to using traditional chemicals.

Tony Hill, Maintenance Manager at Trafford Community Leisure Trust comments on the installation of a 3-pool Hyprolyser system at Sale Leisure Centre; “The site engineer and staff have found the new Hyprolyser system extremely beneficial to their day-to-day running of the pool plant. Along with a generally cleaner environment, the handling of salt rather than dry chlorine has proved a much more friendly approach to maintenance. The savings in chemical expenditure has also proved positive as well.”

Darlaston Leisure Centre in the West Midlands opted for a 2-pool system installation in February 2012 after visiting a similar site using the Hyprolyser. Senior Duty Manager, David Brisbourne commented “The system is very easy to use and with the reduction of health and safety issues it makes perfect sense. We no longer have to deal with injector blockages and the pool chemical levels are more consistent. Operational costs are no more than with the previous system and, long term, we expect them to be less due to lower maintenance – and the water quality is just as good as before”.

There are also environmental benefits to using salt as the raw ingredient for chlorine production - it’s produced in the UK, inexpensive to buy and packed in lightweight recyclable bags, reducing transport/shipping emissions and avoiding the need for the rinsing, return and recycling of heavier plastic drums.

Manufactured in the UK by Gaffey Technical Services Ltd, the HYPROLYSER™ electrochlorination system is proving highly beneficial to commercial pool operators looking to reduce health and safety risks and lower the carbon footprint of their pool water disinfection regime.

Staff involvement in the operation of the equipment is simply limited to topping up the Hyprolyser system with salt. Dosing of the solution can be carried out using traditional dosing pump, or by using the new low maintenance Motive Vacuum Dosing System, developed by Gaffey to eliminate the use of pressurised chemical feed lines.

The Hyprolyser system is produced in a range of models to suit any size of single or multi-pool facility and is available through a network of trained and approved installation and service partners throughout the UK.

Using only salt, water and electricity, the Hyprolyser system automatically generates a clean, non-scale forming 0.7% sodium hypochlorite solution (below hazardous classification), which is then transferred to a day-tank ready for automatic dosing to the pool/s in the normal way. The Hyprolyser system therefore avoids the need for the delivery, handling or mixing of commercial chlorine chemicals on-site, eliminating risks for the pool staff and the on-site auditing responsibilities that COSHH regulations entail. Andrew Gaffey, Sales Director at Gaffey comments; “One of the single most hazardous tasks for pool plant operators is 3-pool Hyprolyser installation complete with Motive Vacuum Dosing systems.

Stretch Ceilings

A world leader in stretch ceiling installations Stretch ceilings have been around since the time when a wet cloth was stretched and dried to create a false ceiling. While the technique is very similar, today’s stretch ceilings consist of a suspended ceiling system that uses a lightweight PVC membrane and a perimeter track. These stretch and clip into the track. In addition to ceilings, the system can be used for wall coverings, light diffusers, floating panels, exhibitions and creative shapes. Stretch ceilings allow the incorporation of all types of light fixtures, grilles, and fixing points by the use of a proprietary background support. The technology was invented in Europe as an interior enhancement technology. The essence of the product is the use of a thin plastic film to envelope a firm frame. The shape of such installation is defined by the hidden profile, while the beauty comes from the film, which can be of any colour, finish and transparency. This technology is an essential component of both construction and decorative line of business. Fabric material is a 0.2mm thick PVC based fully recyclable stretch membrane. The material comes in a vast array of colours and finishes including matt, satin, lacquer, metallic, perforated, and translucent for lighting diffusers, backlighting and projection. The material can be printed or painted for additional effects, is entirely waterproof, washable and impermeable to vapour. It is maintenance-free, hygienic, non-toxic and is fire rated to new euroclass standard B-s1 d0 in accordance with the EN 13501.1, equivalent in the UK to Class ‘O’. Lightweight sheets are purpose made from roll material to form any shape and size typically up to 50sq m in one piece. Each panel incorporates an ultrasonically welded ‘Harpoon Edge’, which clips into the track. Typically the aluminium or PVC semi-concealed track is the preferred choice for most architects and designers, enabling curves, domes, vaults and many other shapes to be formed with ease. Indoor pools are popular nowadays, and making sure they have a suitable ceiling is a great benefit to them. Stretch ceilings are absolutely ideal for pool environments because the stretch material is unaffected by chlorine, moisture, sulphur and any other caustic atmospheres. The membrane of the material is waterproof, prefinished and provides each pool with a complete vapour barrier that certainly ensures that no corrosive vapours pass through the ceiling and above it. Hotel owners choosing to have an indoor swimming pool don’t have to end it there. They can have a beautiful ceiling for the swimmers to be amazed at when they look up and are relaxing in the pool. Ceilings are now an important part of any domestic or private premises catering for the hospitality service, it ensures that the best service is given for customers so that future business

is a possibility thanks to reputation and quality of work. Stretch fabric ceilings also provide energy saving benefits by forming a thin layer of thermal isolation over the structural elements of the house, thereby reducing heating and cooling needs. Such contemporary technology will also improve the air quality in a room by containing the emission of dust and bacteria that accumulates over the years from drywall, a feature that has placed them in high demand by medical facilities. Another benefit that comes with this material is that it improves the acoustics of a room, office, concert hall or even an industrial facility.

Creative Ceilings are manufacturers and installers of Extenzo stretch ceilings and fabric walls, we are the only major UK manufacturer of stretch ceilings Creative Ceilings (UK) Ltd has embraced all of the changes and expansion over the last ten years to evolve as the UK’s leading stretch ceiling company. Due to its leading position in the stretch ceiling market, Creative Ceilings offers a 15-year guarantee, which is the longest guarantee of any stretch ceiling company in the industry. The Company has been installing stretch ceilings since the late 1990s and formed Creative Ceilings Ltd in 2003 to continue the dedicated installation and distribution of these ceilings. Due to the continued success and expansion, the Company moved premises in 2008, opening a dedicated training centre and showroom. In 2009, Creative Ceilings joined Extenzo AFC as an official partner and opened the first UK manufacturing facility, using Extenzo’s 30 years of knowledge and expertise, adopting their ISO 9001:2000 standard. A stretch ceiling is a suspended ceiling that is stretched and secured to the perimeter of a room or space, and the areas it can span can be as large as 80sq m before a joining track needs to be fitted.

The ceiling can be perfectly flat or shapes can be used to form arches, curves and domes. The membrane can be used to assist in the acoustic treatment of a room, it can be used to diffuse lighting to enhance natural daylight or create stunning light effects. Other benefits include helping to assist in prevention of the spread of bacteria and disease, distributes conditioned air, can be used as a radiant heated ceiling. The membrane can be printed on or graphics adhered to it to create a personalised ceiling, and it can act as the vapour barrier in the swimming pool environment. The installation of stretch ceilings is done by highly trained professionals and is advantageous because they can be fit in a few hours, no drying time is required, the worksite is dry with no smells or dust, and the rooms are immediately available for use. Creative Ceilings offer a range of ceilings and walls for different purposes, including aesthetics, to provide beautiful fabric walls in a wide choice of design, traditional ceilings with over 100 colours and ten textures, printed ceilings that are completely personalised, translucent ceilings with several grades to create distinct luminous
