hen he finally collapsed into his assigned bunk on the m/v O.Nelson Jones, reknowned maritime photographer Gregory Thorp felt the thrum of the engines through his pillow. Thirty-six years ago he rode on the same towboat, then named the m/v L. Fiore, while on commission to photograph operations for the Ohio River Company. Now, Gregory is back on board creating a commemorative book for the Seamen’s Church Institute honoring the contributions of the late O. Nelson Jones. The rechristened workboat has never looked better; the rhythm of the proudly maintained 5,600 horses, the restored galley, what the Rev. David Rider, Executive Director of SCI, calls “the intense professionalism and love of work” of the crew, and now this sumptuous collection of photographs are an ongoing tribute to the man for whom this boat is renamed.
