RESEARCH REVIEW

SITE STUDIES WERE MADE AT THE PLOT WE WERE GIVEN, AND THE VARYING CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL ASPECTS WERE INVESTIGATED.

ANALYSING LOCAL AND OVERSEAS BULDINGS, WE GATHERED THE STRATEGIES THAT WE COULD LEARN THROUGH OUR CASE STUDY AS A GROUP.

INFORMATION WAS GATHERED FROM WATERWAY TERRACES IN SINGAPORE AND PARKRAND FROM THE NETHERLANDS.

THROUGH THIS GROUPWORK, IT HAS ALLOWED US TO GAIN A MORE IN DEPTH UNDERSTANDING ON THE ISSUES AND NEEDS FOR HOUSING OF THE FUTURE FOR URBAN LIVING.


DIFFERING FACTORS OF THE SITE WERE INVESTIGATED, SUCH AS THE GREENERY, NODES, DENSITY OF HUMAN TRAFFIC AND NOISE LEVEL. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SITES NEAR THE AREA WERE ALSO VISITED AND STUDIED IN GREATER DETAIL, WHICH WERE POSSIBLE ISSUES THAT WOULD AFFECT OUR INDIVIDUAL DESIGN PROCESS.

BUILDING HEIGHT OF SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AFFECTS THE HOUSING DESIGN, AND GIVES US A BETTER SENSE OF SCALE AS WELL. THIS ALSO ALLOWS US TO HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF THE SURROUNDING SPACE.


THE TWO PROJECTS MADE USE OF DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES. ALLOWING US TO GAIN A GREATER INSIGHT ON HOW THEY BALANCE OUT THE ASPECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND AESTHETICS.


02 INDIVIDUAL DESIGN


VENTURING ALONG THE RICH HISTORICAL AREAS AROUND THE SITE, WHAT CAPTURED THE MAIN EXPERIENCE OF THE SHOPHOUSES TO ME WAS HOW ITS LOW DENSITY COULD ALWAYS BRING NEIGHBOURING RESIDENTS TOGETHER, FRAMING UP A HIGH DENSITY VIEW OF THE URBAN CITY. THE ROWS OF SHOPHOUSES AIDING THE VISION OF THE PEOPLE, PROPELLING THE SIGHT. THIS SCENE OF INTERACTION WAS GREATLY ABSENT IN THE LIVING SPACES OF SINGAPORE NOW, AS COMPARED TO THE PAST.


THE THIEVES’ MARKET ALTHOUGH NO LONGER PRESENT, WILL STILL BE A SIGNIFICANT DESIGN DRIVER IN MY PROJECT.

INTEGRATING THE JUXTAPOSITION OF BRIDGES AND FLOOR PLATES, IT CREATES A MORE DYNAMIC VISUAL CONNECTION BETWEEN RESIDENTS, ALLOWING FOR DOUBLE VOLUME COMMUNAL AREAS TO OCCUR THROUGHOUT THE HOUSING. THIS GAVE RISE TO AN OPPORTUNITY WHEREBY THE PUBLIC AREAS WIL BE EXPOSED TO THE SURROUNDING SITE, ATTEMPTING TO BRING IN THE MASSES INTO THE HOUSING, ENHACING THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF LIVING.


LINEAR LANES OF THE THEN BUSTLING THIEVES’MARKET WAS A MAJOR INTERACTION AREA, THUS I WANTED TO RECREATE THE SCENARIO UP INTO THE PUBLIC HOUSING.


03 SCHEMATIC DESIGN


GREENERY IS ALSO PRESENT, COMPENSATING FOR THE LACK OF NATURE IN THE SITE. THEY ARE ALSO STRATEGICALLY PLACED TO ENHANCE THE LIVING EXPERIENCE WHILE THEY ARE TRANSPORTING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER.

OVERLOOKING COMMUNAL SPACES ENHANCES THE COHESION BETWEEN NEIGHBOURS NOT JUST FROM A LEVEL, BUT FROM DIFFERENT LEVELS AND DIFFERENT UNITS.


NODES OF DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS ARE IN EACH LEVEL, WEAVING IN MACRO AND MICRO FORMS OF INTERACTION. THIS ALLOWS ME TO CONTINOUSLY BREAK THE MONOTONY AND SILHOUETTE OF THE HOUSING.

THE GROUND LEVEL IS ALSO DESIGNED TO AIM FOR THE MASSES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITES, ATTEMPTING TO BRING TOGETHER THE CYCLISTS WHICH I OBSEREVED FROM THE THIEVES’ MARKET AND ROCHOR CANAL WITH THE WALKING PATH. CURVES ARE BEING INTEGRATED TO CREATE A MORE FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, BRINGING IN GREENERY AS WELL TO ELEVATE THE EXPERIENCE.


THE LOUVRES ALLOW THE VERTICALITY OF THE BULDING TO BE EXPRESSED TOGETHER WITH THE COLUMNS. THIS BALANCES OUT THE CHAOS IN THE FLOOR PLATES THAT ARE BEING JUXTAPOSED THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE RENDER, THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF COMMUNAL SPACES THAT ARE EXPOSED, UNLIKE THE USUAL PUBLIC HOUSING WHEREBY ONLY LIVING SPACES ARE SHOWN, THIS BUILDING AIMS TO REACH OUT TO SURROUNDING MASSES FROM ALL AGES, CREATING HOUSING NOT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF LIVING.


03 DETAIL DESIGN


THE PART PLAN DISPLAYS HOW THE UNITS ARE BEING PLACED STRATEGICALLY. INSPIRED BY THE LANES OF NODAL AREAS ALONG THE THIEVES’ MARKET, THE AREA WAS FILLED WITH INTERACTION, THUS RESULTING ME TO RECREATE THAT CONCEPT UP INTO THE PUBLIC HOUSING. INSTILLING INTERACTION AREAS OF VARYING FORMS AND SIZES, DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES AND INTERACTION CAN TAKE PLACE. THIS WILL IN TURN CREATE A LIVELY ATMOSPHERE EVEN DURING THE JOURNEY BACK HOME. ONE BEDROOM UNITS WILL BE EITHER PAIRED WITH A TWO BEDROOM UNIT OR A FOUR BEDROOM UNIT TO ALLOW FOR CROSS GENERATIONAL BONDING.

PERSPECTIVE SECTION WHICH CUTS THROUGH DRY AND WET AREAS, DISPLAYING THE HALF AND FULL SLABS. THE SECTION CUTS THROUGH THE ABUNDANCE OF GREENERY AND COMMUNAL SPACES WHICH SURROUNDS THE FACADES, WHILE SHOWING HOW THE RESIDENTS ARE ABLE TO OVERLOOK FROM ONE SPACE TO ANOTHER.


DETAILING WHICH DISPLAYS THE LAYERS IN THE PLANTER BOXES, FLOOR SLAB OF THE LIVING AND DINING ROOM, TIMBER DECKING, FALSE CEILING, AS WELL AS THE VERTICAL FINS. THE CONCEPT IS BEING CARRIED TOWARDS THE UNIT LAYOUT, AS SEEN FROM HOW THE USER IS EXPOSED TO THE PUBLIC SPACE, AND ALSO THE VIEW FOR THE FULL HEIGHT WINDOWS.


COMMUNAL SPACE RENDER WHICH AIMS TO SHOW THE FUNCTIONALITY OF A DOUBLE VOLUME SPACE, NOT ONLY ENGAGING THE NEIGHBOURS FROM ONE FLOOR, BUT FROM BOTH STOREYS. RECREATING THE FAMILIARITY OF A SHOPHOUSE SCENARIO, INTO THE URBAN HOUSING, WHEREBY SMALLER SCALE COMMUNITIES ARE FORMED AND RESIDENTS ARE BETTER INFORMED OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS. THIS ALSO ALLOWS THEM TO HAVE A BETTER SENSE OF BELONGING. IN ADDITION, IT FRAMES UP A VIEW WHICH ALSO DIFFERS FROM DIFFERENT STOREYS, ENCOURAGING THEM TO INTERACT WITH PEOEPLE.


THE SELECTION AND SIZE OF MATERIALS ARE PICKED TO CREATE A MORE RAW AND SIMPLE FINISH, ALLOWING THE BATHROOM FIXTURES TO STAND OUT IN A SIMPLISTIC MANNER. TEXTURE OF MATERIALS, SUCH AS GRANITE, STONE AND CEMENT SCREED CREATES A MORE INTERESTING TOUCH TO THE BATHROOM, UNLIKE THE USUAL WHITE POLISHED TILES. THE TOILET CONTRASTS THE WALL AND FLOOR THROUGH COLOUR AND SIZE OF TILES, AND AIMS TO ACHIEVE A WARM AND EARTHY TOUCH.


05 FINAL DESIGN


RAINWATER HARVESTING THAT IS AIMED TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY, ALLOWING THE GREAT AMOUNT OF PLANTER BOXES TO BE WATERED, AND THE CORRIDORS CAN BE IRRIGATED. SINCE THERE ARE SEVERAL LANDSCAPING AREAS ON THE FIRST STOREY, I DECIDED TO GO WITH THE IDEA OF BIO RETENTION, WHEREBY A PUMP AND FILTER WILL BE STORED UNDERNEATH. AS IT RAINS, THE RAINWATER WILL BE FILTERED AND PUMPED UP THE ROOF LEVEL TO THE WATER TANK. IT WILL IN TURN SLOWLY DISTRIBUTE TO THE LEVELS, TO WATER AND IRRIGATE.


ZOOMED IN PERSPECTIVE OF THE BIOSWALE PIPES WHICH WILL BE LOCATED AT THE PERIMETER OF THE PLANTER BOXES, WITH SMALL DRIP TUBES TO DISTRIBUTE THE WATER. THE WATER IS BEING COLLECTED AT THE SKY TERRACES.


06 VERTICAL STUDIO ELECTIVE


VERTICAL STUDIO ELECTIVE

AS AN ADDITIONAL MODULE, WE WERE TASKED TO CREATE A SHELF, MADE UP OF MODULES, ALLOWING FOR EASY ASSEMBLY AND EXPANDABILITY.

IT WAS A CHALLENGING PROCESS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DERIVE A SUITABLE FORM WHICH COULD FIT INTO OUR IDEA.

MY GROUP MEMBERS AND I EXPLORED ON NATURE AND HOW SHELVINGS SHOULD NOT BE RESTRAINED BASED ON FORM AND THE INTEGRATION OF NATURE


FUNCTIONING AS AN ENTRANCE, TORUS SLICEFORM IS DESIGNED TO BE WELCOMING AND CEREMONIAL THROUGH ITS RESEMBLANCE OF A FLOWER. THE FORM IS ACHEIVED THROUGH THE USE OF SLITS ON THE CRESCENT LIKE MODULES, CREATING SHELVES THAT HOLDS UP BROCHURES. STARTING OUR DESIGN PROCESS, WE BRAINSTORMED THE POSSIBLE LOCATION AND KEYWORDS TO ATTAIN THE FINAL FORM WHICH IS PARALLEL TO A FLOWER THROUGH EXPLORATION. HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH THE CIRCULAR STRUCTURE CREATED AN ABUNDANCE OF SHELVES ON ALL SIDES, IT DID NOT ALLOW FOR AN OPENING NECESSARY FOR ITS FUNCTION. HENCE, WE CUT THE TORUS INTO HALVES, WHICH DID NOT COMPROMISE ITS FORM AS A FLOWER AND CREATED A FLOW WITHIN THE INSTALLATION.
