The State of Seabeck

A Word From the President

Seabeck Conference Center is currently in the best shape of any time in our long history. We have a strong Board and staff, a committed and supportive guest base, we are almost caught up on deferred maintenance and have a clear vision of the future.

These next few year promise to make the last three look calm. By this time next year I expect to have Tamarack winterized and remodeled. That will leave just a couple of rooms in Reeser as the only untouched rooms on the campus. I also expect to have the new foot bridge and boardwalk in place. Those two projects are on the Master Plan, so you can see we will have a seamless transition into the next phase of Seabeck's history. With your continuing generous support, Seabeck will improve every year. Thank you for all your help through the years, we couldn’t do this without you!.

Seabeck in not only a very special place in our hearts, it is also quite remarkable as a business as well.  The national norm for repeat guests at a conference center is 40-50%. Seabeck enjoys the return of over 90% of its groups every year .  Seabeck carries no liens, mortgages or major debt.  Seabeck is independent. We do not have subsidies, sponsorships, partners or a parent organization, yet our budget breaks even every year with a surplus to carry through the leaner months of winter.  Our staff, per capita of guests served, is about half the size of the national norm. Why? Because, with our top three tenured executive staff members alone, there is a combined Seabeck experience of over seventy years.  Each year, the Board looks at our rates and we continue to approve a schedule that is below the national and regional norms. Why? Because we want to assure that Seabeck is accessible to everyone and, as well, it just feels good being the best deal around. In the past three years, the staff has retired a long list of deferred maintenance while upgrading facilities, often with the help of volunteers from our guests and the community. The grounds and buildings look better than ever, superior food management is improving quality while reducing cost and waste, and guests continue to compliment our services. Enjoying this positive force at Seabeck, the Board agrees that we are in the right place at the right time to preserve our history while assuring the future for generations to follow. Our Master Plan is a shared vision of making significant steps forward in the next ten years. We hope you will continue to support Seabeck in this exciting time.

-Chuck Kraining, Executive Director

-Ben Sherman, President, Seabeck Board of Trustees

I think these last few years have been pretty exciting. We have been more open to the community, reenergized a core group of volunteers with seemingly limitless talents and energy, we made major progress on the daunting list of deferred maintenance, and completed a Master Plan for Seabeck that I believe will serve us well into the future. Yet I think the best is still ahead of us.
