For immediate release - 10/22/2008 - #084 LC Volleyball Posts Important ODAC Win Over EMU 3-1

HARRISONBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College volleyball team posted an important win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Eastern Mennonite University 3-1 Thursday night.

LC led in the first set 19-14, but EMU would call a timeout and stage a comeback, proceeding to score seven of the next nine points to notch the score at 21-21. LC would take command of the lead at 23-21, but EMU went on a 5-1 run to win the first set 26-24. Lynchburg came out on fire in the second set, taking an impressive 12-2 lead, but EMU would gradually chip into the lead, cutting it to only a five point deficit at 18-13, but LC closed out the set strong and came away with a 25-19 win. The third set proved to be a back-and-forth set, including six lead changes and and 10 ties. The set was tied at 18-18, but LC finished the set strong once again to win it 25-22.

The fourth set was tightly contested, but LC led for all but three points as EMU held the lead only once and the score was tied twice. The Hornets were leading just 20-19 down the stretch, however, LC took control of the game, holding EMU to no points for the remainder of the match to secure the fourth set victory 25-19.

LC (14-13/4-5 ODAC) was led by Savannah Tinsley (Lynchburg, VA/EC Glass) who posted 40 assists, third highest total of the season for the Hornets, and eight digs. Michelle Boucher (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) had a tremendous game for the Hornets, tallying 16 kills on just 30 attempts with a .400 hitting percentage and also two blocks. Boucher’s 16 kills tied her season high and is also the highest number of kills in a four set match and the second highest for the Hornets this fall. Elena Kritter (Culpeper, VA/Rappahannock) turned in another all-around game, tacking on 12 kills on a .265 hitting percentage along with 10 digs, giving Kritter her eighth double-double of the season. Erin Heffelfinger (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) had nine kills and five service aces for LC while Ashley Stokes (Lynchburg, VA/ Heritage) added on seven kills. Tiffany Goodman (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) contributed with 22 digs, Kara Matthews (Richmond, VA/Freeman) had seven digs and three service aces, and Chelsea Jones (Richmond, VA/Monocan) gave the Hornets five kills and three service aces. Eastern Mennonite (4-19/0-8 ODAC) was led by Christine Bottles who provided the Royals with 26 assists and 12 digs. Nicole Ropp posted eight kills and four service aces, Monika Burkholder added on nine kills, and Jenny Blosser collected 16 digs. The Hornets travel to Mary Washington on Saturday for a match at 2 p.m.
