For immediate release - 5/12/2010 - #396 Ricky Flynn Earns NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Lynchburg College track & field and cross country star Ricky Flynn (Lynchburg, VA/Damascus) was awarded a $7,500 scholarship this summer by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee for part-time or full-time postgraduate study to continue his studies for a Master of Business Administration at Lynchburg College. The NCAA awarded 174 (87 male/87 female) $7,500 scholarships for student-athletes that competed throughout the school year. The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have an overall undergraduate minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.200 (based on a 4.000 scale), including all undergraduate hour earned at all undergraduate institutions attended. Other requirements include: • Performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team • The degree of the student-athlete’s athletics achievement will be weighed in conjunction with academic performance, university involvement and volunteer community service • Intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree and enroll in a graduate degree program on a part- or full-time basis at an academically accredited graduate or degree-granting professional school. • Are outstanding citizens and excellent role models for the institution and intercollegiate athletics as a whole. Flynn’s athletic accomplishments are vast and varied. Most notably, he won the 2009-10 National Championship in cross country this fall, is a five-time All-American in cross country and track & field, a 13-time ODAC Champion and 2009 ODAC Track Athlete of the Year, was named the 2008-09 USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year, the 2009-10 USTFCCCA Regional and National Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Academically, Flynn was tabbed as the 2009-2010 USTFCCCA Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year, the 2010 ODAC Indoor Scholar Athlete of the Year, and was a 2008 and 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team member. “He is the model student-athlete - great in the classroom and on the track. He certainly is deserving of this honor,” said Dr. Jack Toms, LC Director of Athletics and head indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country coach. “To receive an NCAA post graduate scholarship is a really big deal.” ###
