The Generals took it to the Hornets early, notching three goals in the first two minutes of the game and went on to score the first five goals of the game. However, Lynchburg answered back with three consecutive tallies to make it a 5-3 game with 5:01 left in the firsthalf. W&L tallied a momentum changing goal with just seven seconds left to go into the half up 6-3 as Lynchburg would never get within less than three goals. Patty Sheahan (Lutherville, MD/St. Timothy’s) posted two goals while Lindsay Gengras (Avon, CT/Avon), Lesley Buckingham (Herndon, VA/Herndon), and Meredith Stuart (Chapel Hill, NC/Pomfret School) each found the back of the net once. Wilton Megargel paced W&L with give goals while Britten Mathews posted three scores and Emmy Mathews punched in two goals. Katharine Farrar played all 60 minutes at goalie and posted nine saves to earn the win. Washington & Lee only outshot the Hornets 22-21 and held an 11-8 edge in groundballs, but major advantages in draw controls, clears, and free position shots proved to be a difference maker. The Generals took 13 of 18 draw controls, was 9-11 clearing compared to 6-10 for LC, and was 4-6 on free-position shots while LC was just 1-5. Lynchburg will host cross town foe Randolph College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference tilt. ###
