Scott Harris Lynchburg College Sports Information 1501 Lakeside Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501 434-544-8495 For immediate release - 11/23/2009 - #148 Ricky Flynn Named NCAA South/Southeast Region and National Athlete of the Year LYNCHBURG, VA - After cruising to victories in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), NCAA South/Southeast Region Championship, and the NCAA National Championship meets, Ricky Flynn (Lynchburg, VA/Damascus) was recently tabbed as the USTFCCCA National and Regional Athlete of the Year. This marks the first time that a Lynchburg College cross country athlete has been selected as the National Athlete of the Year. Flynn won the National Championship on Saturday with a time of 25:09 and defeated the runner-up by 23 seconds. His time set the course record and was also the second largest margin of victory in Division III National Championship history. Flynn also won the Regional Athlete of the Year award after cruising to a 16-second victory at the South/Southeast Regional meet and rolling to a 44-second win at the ODAC Championship. Flynn participated in just five meets this fall, but he won four of them and was the top collegiate runner in the other event. He started the season by setting a school-record time of 24:43 in the Paul Short Invitational then posted a time of 24:53 and was the top collegiate runner in the Gold meet of the Blue Ridge Invitational. Flynn concludes his cross country career as a three-time ODAC Champion and a Regional and National Champion. ###
