Collins played college football at Western Oregon from 1993-97 as a linebacker, graduating with a degree in physical education (1998) and then a Master's in education in 2001. As the 35th head coach for the Hardrocker football program, Collins takes over the football program from Dan Kratzer, who retired at the end of the 2011 season. After back-to-back 1-9 seasons, Kratzer posted consecutive .500 marks (5-5) followed by the most successful campaign in over a decade during 2010 with a 7-3 showing, a slew of national rankings and an opportunity to play for a Dakota Athletic Conference championship and chance to advance to the NAIA playoffs. SD Mines finished 2011 with a 1-10 overall record. "I look forward to working with AD Kaiser to continue building the Hardrocker football program into a quality NCAA Div. II program --- one Coach Kratzer capably developed the foundation for over the past seven years," Collins said. Collins, a native of Sutherlin, Ore., has been married to his wife, Mandi since July 2002. The couple has three daughters, Kayla (8), Mackenzie (6), and newborn Kylee.
