WELCOME Welcome to the first bimonthly edition of the FOCUS. After a discussion with staff and volunteers, it has been decided to produce this bulletin every two months. The next edition will be Nov/Dec 2012 (Deadline will be 21st November). Please remember that this is your communication tool to find out what is happening in and around the Hospice organisation. STAFF NEWS Welcome to Catrin Jones (top left) and Lindsay Ward (bottom left) who are joining the ward as the new Health Care Support Workers. Well done to Sister Jenny Maxwell (top right) who has passed her degree Module (Level 6) in Palliative Care in Chester University. Staff Nurse Helen Hughes has been accepted on a MSc Advanced Clinical Practice course at Bangor University. She commences in October for three years (part-time). Sister Kirsten Foster-Alexander (middle right) has been accepted on to the Leadership MSc in Bangor University starting in October. Happy Birthday to Staff Nurse Sue Evans (bottom right) who has turned 60. She recently enjoyed a surprise trip away to Rome, thanks to her daughters. Also birthday wishes to Llinos Hughes, Assistant Chef who will be celebrating her 21 st at the end of September.

THE FIGURES Heating costs It cost £18,400 just to heat the hospice last year. In addition to this the electric costs were £20,940. Therefore in total £107 per day, every day. As the nights are drawing in, and we head for the chillier days of the winter, please help us to keep the costs down. Remember to close doors, shut windows, turn down the radiators and switch the lights off in any rooms that are not in use.
COMMUNICATIONS Annual Report 2011 – Thank you to staff and volunteers for all your help and cooperation in the production of this document. A special thanks to those of you who has reluctantly said ‘cheese’ when asked for a photograph. The publication will be available at the start of October and will be primarily used as a marketing tool for potential funders.
FUNDRAISING - Diary
Our Great Orme Memory Walk will be held on Sunday 30th September at 1pm. Please join us in memory of a loved one or perhaps merely to enjoy the beautiful scenery. OTHER NEWS Donations of paperback books needed – Our small book shop at the hospice is very low on stock. Please browse at your bookshelves at home and bring along any unwanted books for us to sell. Donations can be dropped off at the Hospice Reception (Monday – Friday 9am -5pm). In 2011, £1130 was raised through the sale of books at the hospice. Many thanks to volunteer Pat Ruscoe for tidying and keeping them stocked up.
AND FINALLY… In the August edition we asked you ‘who is this bouncing baby boy’? If you guessed Andrew Humphreys, then give yourself a pat on the back – you’re correct! Interview with Andrew: What is your job title? Finance Officer What are you responsible for? There are two main areas of my role:i) Finance Ensuring that all bills are paid on time, all monies due to the hospice is correctly accounted for, and that any requests for information are provided. Working with the hospice auditor’s I ensure that the annual accounts are completed and filled on time, I complete the annual returns to the Charity Commission and Companies House. I work closely with solicitors on the hospice legacy campaign and chase outstanding amounts due to us. Oh yes, I also pay people on a monthly basis. ii) IT Liaising with our external contractors I ensure that the Hospice network runs as smoothly as possible and try to resolve any problems, secondly I work with IT specialists from the NHS to facilitate the CANISC system (an online computer system holding patient Who is the little girl, not information) for the hospice. very keen on having her photo taken? How long have you been in the current role? Since December 2000 What is the average day like for you? Whilst there are the daily tasks which have to be seen to such as banking and bill payments, there could be any amounts of IT problems which need to be addressed so that can have an impact on the “routine”. What do you enjoy most about your job? I know that this answer will probably sound like a politician but it is both an honour & privilege to be associated with St David’s and I enjoy the fact that we are all highly respected within the local community regardless of role. That is the most enjoyable thing for me. If you were to win the lottery how would you treat yourself? Having provided for family & friends I would splash out on a Ferrari Belinetta F12 its only £275,000
