FOCUS Staff and Volunteer Bulletin March/April 2013 HEALTH MINISTER’S VISIT At the end of February, the Hospice welcomed Health Minister Lesley Griffiths AM. The visit was to announce that the Hospice had recently been awarded the £250,000 of capital funding by the Welsh Government to assist in the Helping Hands Appeal. The money is the final instalment of the £1.2m redevelopment, which has been successfully completed and has provided an environment of privacy and comfort for patients and families who have requested the expert care that the Hospice provides. Mrs Griffiths said “I am delighted that the Welsh Government could assist St David’s Hospice to complete the redevelopment of the building, which will undoubtedly improve the experiences of both patients and their families.” Chairman Gladys Harrison and Chief Executive Alun Davies again wishes to express a huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers for all the hard work that was put in last year and to date with the redevelopment and for putting up with some difficult occasions that arose during that time. We are always very grateful for all the support that is given by everyone. Since the Health Minister’s visit, Mrs Griffiths has now moved onto a new role after a reshuffle of the Welsh Assembly Government. We are very fortunate to have secured the capital funding grant whilst Mrs Griffiths was Health Minister as she is such a supporter of the Hospice and all its work within the local communities. Further Photographs from the Health Minister’s visit can be found at:

THANK YOU Please can we have some more wool and safety pins? Drop into fundraising with Agnes. Thank you.

A huge THANK YOU goes to Val Whittington and Joan Bailey and their team of knitters who have been really busy knitting the Easter Chicks that are on sale across the Hospice. I’m sure you’ll agree that they make wonderful Easter gifts for friends and family and at only £1.50 each.

VOLUNTEERS Without our volunteers, St David’s Hospice would not be able to carry out its vital work free of charge to the communities. We value our team of kind and loyal volunteers and it’s their gift of time, experience and energy that really helps others. In each edition we are going to meet a different volunteer who is going to share those experiences and give us an insight into the Voluntary role that they undertake at the Hospice. VOLUNTEER IN PROFILE Name: Muriel Dowell Department: Tea Room at Llandudno Magistrates Court How long have you volunteered at St David’s Hospice? I have been volunteering at the court cafe since 2003. Why did you decide to volunteer at St David’s Hospice? It is something to do, to help occupy my time. As I got older I didn’t feel as needed or wanted and this gave me that. What is your favourite aspect of your volunteer work? I like being with people, mixing and chatting to them. What difference has your volunteering made to you? It gives me something to look forward to, and a reason to go out. What has been the highlight of your time here so far? Being in the environment of the court has provided some memorable moments! The highlight for me is to know that I am able to be of use to someone. Can you sum up the Hospice in five words? Wouldn’t be without the hospice.

By renting a neighbouring unit (Unit 6) in Builder Street, Llandudno and the addition of a new van, we are now able to sell a wider range of items such as good quality furniture. With parking outside the units, they are an ideal location to drop off any donations and view the furniture we have for sale. LOTTERY A New Hand on the Steering Wheel Julie Hughes is now in post as Lottery Manager and has for the past few weeks been working with Tom Williams in the Lottery Office ready to take over when Tom retires from his role at the end of March. This is not the last that we will see of Tom as he will continue to support the Hospice by going out on a regular basis to collect Lottery Subscriptions from members in and around the area. We are considering the possibility of staff playing the lottery by having subscriptions deducted from Salary payments at source – you will never miss another Lottery game!! Further details of this will be circulated in the near future.

Many of you will have already met our latest Dewi Bear who, for 2013 has decided to dress up as a Pirate. Dewi is given free to anyone that subscribes to the lottery and pays for a full year in advance. Come and see us for details if you are interested.

I have come to the Hospice after working nearly 17 years for Barclays Bank as an Assistant Manager. I live in Penrhyn Bay with my husband Richard and my daughter Jessica. I am really looking forward to being part of the Hospice team and I’m really hoping to make a difference. The Hospice DVD is now available to view online at or you can borrow a copy from the Hospice.
