St David’s Hospice would like to thank each and every person who has supported the Hospice this year. Your ongoing support means that we can continue to care for our patients, their families and carers when they need us most. Your continuing support is invaluable.

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter edition of ‘Life’ available hospice care in the area, ending the postcode lottery that exists.

The first three quarters of the year have been very busy at St David’s Hospice. We held a packed season of fundraising events through the spring and summer. These included some of the traditional calendar favourites such as the Spring and Summer Fairs raising over £11,000 between them, and also some new events, including the Clay Pigeon Shoot held for the first time in July and raising over £35,000.

Having already spoken to patients, carers, families, local GPs and healthcare professionals, this has highlighted that there is a clear need for these facilities on Anglesey and in Dwyfor.

Our 13 retail shops, which already provide a significant income for the Hospice, continue to grow from strength to strength. We are now at the stage where we need to expand our goods distribution operation in order to continue to grow and open shops in new locations in the future. For this reason, we decided to add to our current Donation Centre on Builder Street, Llandudno by taking up a new warehouse in Mochdre. This bigger space will enable us to house more of your donated furniture, electrical goods and clothes, as well as rotate stock much more efficiently to the shops where they are more likely to sell.

As you know, St David’s Hospice already provides an excellent inpatient and day care service for patients with advanced illnesses and those in need of end of life care. However, the shocking fact is that the nearest inpatient hospice west of Llandudno is in Dublin! Some of our patients are currently faced with 90 minute journeys for inpatient hospice care, effectively removing the option for a significant proportion of vulnerable patients and their carers. This needs to change. When the time is right, I hope that I can share with you our final care model, and that we can rely on your continued support. With your help, we can make an ever bigger difference to the lives of those people who need us, their families and carers.

In terms of our clinical developments, you may have seen some publicity earlier in the summer about the Hafan Dewi Sant Project. Working in conjunction with “Hospice at Home Gwynedd and Anglesey”, together we plan to radically improve the current level of end of life care services in Gwynedd and Anglesey. Our aim is to provide satellite hospice units with beds, plus other services, at Holyhead and Pwllheli, alongside an enhanced community Hospice at Home service.

Finally, as we approach the festive season, I would like to wish you a peaceful Christmas. May I also take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. Trystan Pritchard Chief Executive trystan.pritchard@stdavidshospice.org.uk

I firmly believe that our exciting plans will offer choice at the end of life, and will address the current inequality of

Rotary Tree of Lights For each light purchased, a Tree of Lights card will be sent to you by post. Your loved ones’ names will also be entered into a special ‘Book of Lights’, which will be available to view in the Hospice chapel throughout 2018.

Remember your loved ones this Christmas time by dedicating a light on the Rotary Tree of Lights At St David’s Hospice, we understand the joys that Christmas can bring, as well as the challenges that families face at this time of year as we naturally reflect and think of those who are no longer with us.

The Tree of Lights service is kindly organised by the Rhos on Sea Rotary Club, and members have dedicated their time in organising this event for 18 years to date.

For a small donation to St David’s Hospice, you are invited to dedicate a light on the Hospice’s Rotary Tree of Lights, to remember a loved one and support the work of the Hospice at the same time.

Mr George Price, President of Rhos on Sea Rotary Club, said: “The Tree of Lights is a highlight of our calendar and we are very pleased again to support St David's Hospice and those people in our communities who are living through bereavement. We are mindful that Christmas can be a difficult time for many, and our joint efforts with the Hospice go a long way to support the commemoration of loved ones, which is so important. I will look forward to another successful event this year and thank you to everybody who continues to support us”.

The Tree of Lights switch-on ceremony will take place at 4:30pm on Sunday 26 November 2017, on Cayley Promenade, Rhos on Sea, when the lights will be lit for the first time this year. Each light will shine brightly throughout December and into the new year to commemorate those we have loved and lost.

This year it will cost more than £3 million to deliver our services. 86% of this comes from community fundraising and donations given by you, our loyal supporters. No costs are passed to the patients, their families or carers, because St David’s Hospice care is free to all.

that’s over £ 8 000 a day!

A special goodbye

Animals can bring warmth, happiness and reassurance for many they are part of the family. With the assistance of friends and family, St David’s helped to create a precious moment of happiness for inpatient Karen and her family by arranging a special visit from her favourite horse, Tippy.

Volunteer Awards As part of the Volunteers’ Week celebrations which took place in June this year, Community and Voluntary Support Conwy (CVSC) held a special celebratory Awards Evening, to recognise and reward the excellent contribution of volunteers in the local community.

So, when Tippy visited St David’s Hospice in the spring, naturally we welcomed him with open arms. Tippy lit up the room as he gently peered through Karen’s bedroom door, and she stroked his nose affectionately whilst saying a final goodbye. Karen’s daughter Clare said: “It was such a treat for Mum. The Hospice went out of their way to allow this unusual visitor, the horse that Mum had ridden in recent years, owned by one of Mum's best friends Jane, to visit her. “It was a very special moment for Mum, Jane and the family - to see Mum's smile and for her to say a special goodbye to Tippy.” “The care Mum received was excellent. Attending Day Care was a great support, the nursing staff listened and understood Mum's fears. They were also there for the family too. This carried on within the Inpatient Unit; the nurses were all caring and supportive to us all at such a difficult time.” “The doctor was always there to explain things to us and for us to ask questions of. They were a tremendous support to us as a family and cared so well for Mum during her last few days.” Friend Roy, who had helped to organise the visit, said: “Tippy has such a beautiful temperament and a very calming nature. We were very proud of how calm he behaved. It was so lovely to see them together.” Putting the patients and their needs first is at the heart of Hospice care. Moments like this are very special to all involved, and create memories for all that will live on forever. The holistic care at St David’s is tailored to the individual. It encompasses all areas of wellbeing, providing a clinical expertise alongside emotional, physical and spiritual support. The smaller things can really make a big difference.

Congratulations to our volunteer receptionist Sandra Tighe and volunteer fundraiser Carol Thorne, who were both awarded the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) Highly Commended certificate. Vicky MacDonald, Hospice Trustee said: “Well done. Both ladies are extremely enthusiastic and dedicated, contributing significantly to the work at the Hospice. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and all at the Hospice, may I offer you my heartfelt thanks and appreciation of your valuable help”. Sandra Tighe spoke about her award: “It was an honour to be nominated for the award, such a privilege to have won. It has always been great to be at the Hospice working with such lovely people.” Carol Thorne said: “I was overwhelmed by the recognition process and award and I am so grateful to be part of such a welcoming Hospice family”. We would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all our volunteers. You are a vital part of the team that makes St David’s Hospice what it is today.

“ Sometimes it is the little things we can achieve on a day-to-day basis that motivate us and give us self-worth” Sue Harrison, Hospice Physiotherapist

From Dream to Reality has lost the use of his upper limbs through the deterioration of his muscles. Rob told us: “If I was to go to a normal gym, I could cause myself severe harm, and possibly to others, so I have to exercise in a controlled environment such as St David’s Hospice. To be able to exercise would improve my quality of life, my self-worth, my motivation, health and well-being and self-esteem – I would be so happy to be able to do that.”

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Hospice Physiotherapist, Sue Harrison, has been granted her dream of building a purpose-built gym at the Hospice.

Sue continues: “The new gym will provide a private and safe area for patients to exercise, using brand new equipment which has been purpose built to suit individual needs. Sometimes, it is the little things we can achieve on a day-to-day basis that motivate us and give us self-worth. The gym will be pivotal in building people’s confidence and strength which will naturally enhance their quality of life.”

A dedicated gym will be based within the Day Care Centre in Llandudno and will be the perfect environment for patients to safely exercise, build mobility and boost well-being. Sue explains: “Within the Physiotherapy Department, the main challenge is to find ways of meeting our patients’ expectations of exercise, as well as setting realistic personal goals which can be achieved. In some cases, we might aim towards a patient being able to walk to the toilet independently at home and, in others, the dream of running a 5K again.”

It will cost £10,000 to equip the gym. The dream has been long awaited, but, thanks to the success of the Hospice’s first Clay Pigeon Shoot back in July, a donation from the local Cancer Chums group along with other single donations, sufficient funds have been raised to make Sue’s dream a reality.

Rob Spotswood, a patient at St David’s Hospice, tells us what a gym would mean to him.

Thank you so much to everybody who contributed towards equipping the new St David’s Hospice gym.

Will Month 2017

You are not obliged to leave a gift in your will to St David’s Hospice but anything you might consider, no matter how big or small, will make a lasting contribution to our work. More importantly, you will have security in knowing that the assets you have worked hard for all of your life are protected.

Did you know that one in three patients at St David’s Hospice is funded by people leaving a gift in their will? So much of the Hospice’s clinical development work over the past 17 years is due to the generosity of those who leave a gift to us in their will. A gift in your will won’t cost you a penny during your lifetime, but could make a lasting difference once you are gone by enabling the Hospice to provide the very best haven of care for local people, friends, family and neighbours in the future.

To have your FREE basic will written during November, please call David Jones Solicitors, Llandudno on 01492 874336 and quote “Free Will Month” or email: mail@davidjoneslaw.co.uk

Writing or amending your will shouldn't seem like a daunting process. It will simply ensure that your wishes and loved ones are protected should life take an unexpected turn.

Please note that that more complex wills will incur an additional fee payable by you. For more information about Will Month, you can call 01492 879058 or email k.morgan-jones@stdavidshospice.org.uk.
