SOLAR NEWS #1 OCTOBER 2013
SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE 2014 a ‘must’ for all players and industries in sustainable housing and renewable energies.
INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH President of Qualibat, Alain Maugard leads the Scientific Counsel of Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. In your opinion, what makes the Solar Decathlon so different from other competitions? Alain Maugard : The Solar Decathlon is an original competition. First of all, the teams’ first mission is to manage the building operations from A to Z: conception, construction, functioning, including disassembly. Multidisciplinary teams are composed of young international students: architects, engineers, communication and marketing specialists. This Competition is the fruit of applied research and features real conditions and innovations. This positioning is quite original; like concept-cars, it leads us to concept-buildings!
What are the significant facts of this 2014 edition? Versailles’ choice as host city for Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 is no coincidence. Beyond the obvious reference to the Sun King, it is important to point out that the Castle was a very innovative building, with completely innovative architecture for its time, and it used revolutionary techniques such as water treatment. One must not forget that the Competition takes place within La Cité du Soleil®, a transitory yet sustainable site built within new alleys which were originally designed by Le Nôtre. Have the Competition rules changed or evolved? Indeed, 2014 is quite different from other Competitions. The Competition is no longer focused solely on individual solar houses but also on collective housing solutions as applied to dense urban areas. The objective is to respond to local demands by contextualizing prototypes accordingly with the country of

origin – we are speaking here of climate and affordability. The stakes of retrofitting and mobility are core in this 2014 edition. What lessons can be learned from such a Competition? Once the Competition is over, we are planning to capitalize on all previous editions. We would like point out the trends, innovative ideas, and any leads that might help develop the future of energy transition. BBC, Bepos or positive energy housing – all of these points are viable; we still need to observe the public’s reaction to the ergonomics and viability of these houses, understand their expectations and fears… this is paramount in order for us to move forward. In the end, the human being is at the heart of our preoccupations - the everyday citizen, the city dweller or the citizen of the world - we are all responsible for our planet’s future.
Alain Maugard, president of Qualibat.

Info BATIMAT The Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 Workshop # 2 took place at the same time as the BATIMAT International Fair. At the heart of BATIMAT 2013: the stakes of energy efficiency and low consumption buildings. To learn more, please go here www.batimat.com #2 Workshop 6-8 November 2013 For three days, the Solar Decathlon crew welcomed 200 Decathletes from the 20 official Teams. The workshop took place at La Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris and then in Versailles, next to the Competition site. A forum for energetic interaction & exchange, it was a great opportunity for the Teams to meet other participants, appreciate the exhibition of models and ask crucial questions to the SD crew – this helped to propel Teams with their projects. Press conference – Wednesday November 6th 2013 A significant moment to rev up the Competition, this press conference was the first time where all the 20 official models were exhibited along with explanatory posters.
SOLAR DECATHLON ABROAD Chinese Solar Decathlon in Datong The Solar Decathlon China 2013 is the new offspring of Solar Decathlon Competitions and the first in Asia. Located 350 miles west of Beijing, Datong has 1.2M inhabitants and is known for its coal industries. There is much pollution in the area and Datong is struggling with an energy and ecological transition, aiming towards less pollution and more sustainable activities. With these visions in mind, Datong was selected to host the Competition last August.

The 6th American Solar Decathlon took place in October 2013 at the Orange Country Great Park, in Irvine, California. A French delegation, including Pascal Rollet, Bruno Mesureur, Louise Holloway and Etienne Crépon, visited the Competition with a clear objective: to learn as much as possible about the American way! The delegation met with Richard King, the father of the Solar Decathlon Competition, who guided them through US Podium 2013 1/ University of Vienna (Austria) 2/ Las Vegas (US) 3/ University of Prague (Czech Republic)

The city and the castle of Versailles are essential partners of the Competition, and both are closely linked in the retrofitting of the Mortemets site. “ […] Since July 1st, the Versailles Grand Parc, along with the General Council and the Parisian Agency for Green Spaces, has been retrofitting a 2-mile alley designed by Le Nôtre which had been previously closed to the public. This plot of land, next to the famous Pièce d’Eau des Suisses, will host the Solar Decathlon. This is quite symbolic: the event is dedicated to international universities with a focus on solar energy and positive energy houses. A reference to the sun, emblematic of the
Retrofitting of the site In the days of Louis XIV and Le Nôtre, the Mortemets site was fully integrated in the gardens of Versailles. After more than 300 years of successive developments that led to severe deterioration, a recovery program was initiated to restore the Mortemets site to its initial glory. The first phase of works started in 2012 with the retrofitting of primary Alleys such as Tilleuls Alley and Mortemets Alley. These alleys were unveiled in July 2013. The second phase was led last autumn, with the excavation and shaping of the field that will host the Competition. Lastly, in January 2014, the foundations of the
Decathletes’ Quarters will be built in order to make the site fully operational by June 2014. At the end of the Competition, the Mortemets site will be returned to its original green field.
