Advanced Learning Loans

Adults over the age of 24 looking to study at Sussex Downs College are entitled to an ‘Advanced Learning Loan’ to help support their learning. The Government has introduced the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans which provides a means for anybody aged 24 and over to improve their qualifications through access to further education. If you are aged 24 and above, studying level 3 and 4 qualifications including A Levels, Access to Higher Education diplomas and certificates, you can apply for the loan to help pay fees. For courses branded throughout this brochure as 24+ Advanced Learning Loans you may be able to apply for a loan even if your course has already started, though you must apply before it finishes. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history. Professional Development We offer a choice of short courses aimed at keeping your staff up to date in the latest practices from appraisal training to time management and food safety to marketing. All courses are ideal for a range of staff, sectors and roles and are paced in such a way to allow you to enhance your knowledge, ask questions and enjoy your learning experience with our friendly, and highly experienced trainers. Our courses are delivered at our Newhaven, Lewes or Eastbourne campuses, all of which are located in close proximity to public transport, including frequently running buses and trains. Understanding the benefits of appraisals can help managers and supervisors to make the best use of them.This dynamic one-day course is aimed at new appraisers (or those looking to brush up their skills) and is especially useful for organisations introducing a new scheme for appraisal or performance review. A lot of customer and supplier documentation is required in day to day business - this practical one-day course helps you understand the purpose of everything from invoices through to bank reconciliations. It shows you how to keep records to work effectively, and keep your accountant and the VAT inspector happy.

The availability of cash enables a business to survive and prosper and is the primary indicator of business health. Through exercises using worked examples, this course will help improve your effectiveness at managing the inflow and outflow of cash, thus helping to protect the financial security of your business. This course is suited to those who work as an office supervisor or want to progress to an office supervisor or manager and you are looking to develop your knowledge surrounding these areas. The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage) (QCF) is a technical level qualification that provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a massage therapist either as an employee or in a selfemployed capacity.

This is a substantial qualification for those seeking a career as an employed and/or selfemployed cosmetic make-up and beauty consultant. It contains all the required elements to work effectively in this sector including: applying make-up and instruction on make-up, client care and health and safety. Your skills will be further developed through the specialist unit: ‘provide eyelash and brow treatments’.

This qualification has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in how to provide the relaxing and stress relieving treatment of Indian Head Massage and to develop treatments for your own services for clients. You will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety, anatomy and physiology, client care and communication to underpin the development of your practical skills will be delivered throughout this programme of study.

The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a massage therapist including health and safety, client care and communication and body massage incorporating anatomy and physiology and client consultation skills. The aim of the qualification is to provide you with an introduction to book-keeping practices and to process source documents that underpin accurate record keeping.

The aim of the qualification is to further develop the introductory book-keeping practices and processes studied at Level 1 to enable you to adjust ledger accounts to take account of activities at the trial balance date which affect the production of an accurate trading, profit and loss account and balance sheet.

The aim of the qualification is to enable you to operate computerised accounts software to carry out routine accounting tasks. This course is for practising and experienced electricians. The qualification is also suitable for those with limited experience of initial inspection of electrical installations. It is advised that candidates have obtained the current City and Guilds 17th Edition Wiring Regulations Certificate. One of two courses that have replaced the City and Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing qualification. The cost given is for a single course only but if you take both courses 2394/95 together it costs just £850 in total.

This course is for practising and experienced electricians and is also suitable for those with limited experience of Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical installations. It is advised that candidates have obtained the current CandG 17th Edition Wiring Regulations Certificate. The second of two courses that have replaced the City and Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing qualification. The cost given is for a single course only but if you take both courses 2394/95 together it costs just £850 in total.

Suitable for practising electricians, domestic installers and other allied professionals requiring an understanding of the BS 7671 (17th Edition regs including amendment 3). The course covers scope, object and fundamental principles for safety; definitions; assessments of general characteristics; protection for safety; selection and erection of equipment; special installations, inspection and testing; and use of appendices.

This course is suitable for those without previous electrical training and will include additional teaching to help you understand the underpinning principles involved. However, basic knowledge of electrical science, e.g. units of measurement, voltage, resistance and current etc. would be beneficial. Successful completion of this course will enable you to carry out portable appliance testing.

This course is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and testing process. It addresses, in particular, the implications of the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installations. This CIEH accredited one-day course is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks, where a nominated person is required to take charge of first aid in the event of an accident or illness. In larger organisations where there is a fully qualified First Aider, an emergency first aider with First Aid training could offer additional support, especially where there may be a number of floors or buildings, or where work is operated in shifts. The course will include an insight into relevant legislation and the duties as required by such legislation, such as a first aid kit and simple record keeping.

This Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved 3-day course provides a First Aid at Work certificate that is valid for 3 years. Please note a first-aider can attend a First Aid at Work Refresher course up to three months before the expiry date on their certificate. Paediatric First Aid (CIEH Level 2) / ÂŁ180 This two-day course, supported by the Paediatric First Aid Association, covers all topics required by Ofsted, child minders, nursery workers and teachers and is a mandatory requirement for those working with babies and under school age children. The course is conducted over two six hour sessions. Students need to be fit and able to undertake the practical aspects of the course without risk of harm. The course content is designed to cover conditions and emergencies that are paediatric related. It has on-going assessment of the students over the two days with no formal final assessment.
