His stories and videos will inspire and inform. Culture has always been an important mission for SCWA and Scott will stress how developing the right culture will set you apart from your competitors. 3 STEPS TO MAKE SURE 2026 IS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR EMPLOYERS LABOR As we approach the end of 2025 and prepare for a new

year, it is essential for employers to set themselves up for a compliant and successful 2026. Our three-step guide is designed to help employers enter the new year fully prepared and equipped with the right tools.

Step 1: Update and Organize Employment Documentation.

In 2025, ICE audits and I-9 inspections have been on the rise nationwide. Audit notices require all I-9 forms and documentation to be produced within just three business days of a Notice of Inspection (NOI).

As the new year begins, employers should be prepared by ensuring that all employment documents are current and properly maintained. Confirm that you have completed Form I-9’s on file for every employee and remember to use the most recent version of the form at the time of completion. Do NOT use the Spanish version. Employers should also reverify any employment authorization documents that have expired.

Key documents to review and update may include:

• Form I-9s • Employee handbooks and policies • Job descriptions • Required workplace postings • Consider Arbitration Agreement and Confidentiality Policies.

The most important documents for employers to review going into 2026 are I-9s, tax and compliance forms, payroll records, benefits documentation, and signed employment agreements/policies.

Step 2: Ensure your non-harassment policy also includes a clear anti-discrimination component and that it is available in both English and Spanish. This policy is critical for setting expectations, documenting that your business does not tolerate unlawful conduct, and demonstrating that employees have been properly informed.

AI SEARCH IS CHANGING EVERYTHING MARKETING Over the past year, something dramatic has been

happening on the internet—something every car wash owner needs to understand. Search engines are no longer simply showing a list of links when customers look for a car wash. Instead, Google, Apple, Bing, and even OpenAI’s tools are now using artificial intelligence to generate instant answers right at the top of the screen.

Customers search phrases like “car wash near me,” “best ceramic wash in town,” or “touchless wash open now,” and AI creates a summary that explains options, compares services, or highlights businesses it deems trustworthy.

Those summaries are built from website content—not from Facebook pages, not from Instagram posts, and not from advertisements. This shift means that having a modern, structured, information-rich website is no longer a luxury or a branding upgrade. It is now a fundamental requirement for being visible in the new world of AI-driven search.

Yet many operators still believe they can rely on a Facebook page alone. In their minds, customers already know the wash is there, or they assume people will simply drive by.

Others think that posting occasionally on social media is enough to build trust or communicate promotions. But a Facebook page is not a storefront. It doesn’t explain your packages clearly, it does nothing to help you show up in AI-generated results, and it cannot answer the practical questions customers search for every day. In addition to looking at the sales and memberships on site, they should also be looking at the online traffic, membership conversion rates, search visibility, online reputation, and whether the website reliably attracts and educates customers. Two nearly identical washes can sell for wildly different multiples based solely on their digital footprint. In today’s market, a strong website can increase a wash’s valuation by hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars. It signals stability, professionalism, and future revenue potential. Facebook does not do that.

There is also a direct financial impact. A professional website reduces the number of calls and customer service questions because it answers the basics automatically— hours, directions, wash options, safety information, vehicle restrictions, and membership details. It saves staff time, reduces frustration, and ensures customers receive consistent information. When you look at labor savings, increased membership conversion, and improved customer trust, a well-built car wash website pays for itself many times over. The idea that $100 a month is expensive becomes almost comical when a single extra customer a day covers that cost.

The bottom line is simple. AI search has redefined how customers discover car washes, and Facebook cannot fill the role of a true digital presence. A website is no longer optional—it is a core business asset. It shapes visibility, trust, revenue, membership growth, labor efficiency, and long-term valuation. It is the one digital tool a car wash fully owns and controls. And in 2026 and beyond, the operators who invest in modern, AI-ready websites will be the ones customers can find, trust, and choose again and again. Those who rely solely on social media will increasingly fade into the background of the internet, overshadowed by washes that built the digital foundation the new search landscape requires.

WHAT IS NONTAXABLE INCOME? FINANACE Who wouldn’t love to avoid paying tax on their income?

Well, in some cases, you can.

Here’s what you need to know about when you can receive income without having to pay the federal government—from our Bottom Line expert Abby Eisenkraft, EA, CEO of Choice Tax Solutions, Inc. What is nontaxable income?

All income is taxable unless there is an explicit provision in the Tax Code saying otherwise. In some cases, nontaxable status depends on the dollar amounts of the income and other specifics…and sometimes you’re required to report income even though it won’t be taxed.

It is always best to check with a tax professional before assuming you’re scot-free.

Here are some examples of nontaxable income…

Gifts and inheritances Most gifts and inheritances are nontaxable, but some must be reported to the IRS. If you receive a gift in excess of $100,000 from an overseas non-US citizen, both you and the giver must satisfy reporting requirements or face severe penalties. Domestic gifts above $19,000 per recipient (2025) require the giver to file a gift-tax return document as well.

$5,250 per employee per year in tax-free educational benefits.

Roth IRA distributions (usually) As long as you’re at least 59½ and have held the retirement account for at least five years, you can take out the money without paying tax.

Disaster relief grants They’re only tax-free if the emergency was part of a federally declared disaster. Check with your tax professional.

Employer-provided adoption assistance The adoption must have been done through a legal adoption, and there typically are rules and regulations specific to each program. Discuss this carefully with your employer and your tax professional.

Some home sale proceeds

Income from federal programs such as the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program…Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)…and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program are taxfree and have no reporting requirements.

To avoid tax, you must have owned and lived in the home for two of the past five years and your profit must not exceed $250,000 for a single taxpayer or $500,000 if married filing jointly…the home must also be your primary residence and you must not have sold a primary residence and claimed the same benefit within the past two years. You also may subtract costs associated with the sale—including closing costs, commissions, attorney fees, recording fees, title search fees, etc.—as well as the cost of any major improvements you made to the home. Even though these proceeds are not taxable, you must report all of this to the IRS.

Life insurance benefits

Social Security benefits

If you receive a payout as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you are not required to pay income tax on it.

If an individual’s earned income such wages and net earnings from self-employment is below $25,000, he/she pays tax on no portion of his Social Security income. But individuals with earned incomes from $25,000 to $34,000 must pay tax on half of their Social Security benefits.

People with higher incomes may have to pay tax on up to 85% of what they take in from Social Security.

Welfare benefits

Child support and (some) alimony Child support is not taxable and the payor cannot claim it as a deduction. The same is true for alimony but only for settlement agreements finalized in 2018 or later.

Education assistance

Interest on municipal bonds

This is nontaxable income as long as the assistance comes through a qualified fellowship or scholarship and is used for books, tuition and other expenses required by the educational institution. Employers can provide up to

NEW RULES ON CHARITABLE GIVING TAX DEDUCTIONS FINANACE T

hinking about donating to your favorite charities? The recently passed tax legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), provides an added incentive— you can use charitable donations to reduce your tax bill even if you take the standard deduction on your income taxes.

But the OBBBA limits some of the tax benefits of charitable giving for wealthy donors. Maryann Reyes, CPA, PFS, principal with the tax group at WithumSmith+Brown, PC, explains what you need to know…

The Federal government has long incentivized making charitable donations by allowing taxpayers a deduction on their federal income tax returns as long as they itemize rather than take the standard deduction. In 2017, during his first term, President Trump nearly doubled the standard tax deduction.

Result: Far fewer taxpayers itemized on their tax returns and were eligible to get a tax break for giving to charity.

Good news: Starting in tax year 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can claim charitable giving tax deductions for donations to qualifying 501(c)(3) public charities of up to $1,000 for single filers…or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.

But there are some caveats…

The deduction applies to cash donations only (not property, appreciated stock or other assets).

The provision is not indexed for future inflation.

Any gifts over $250 need to be supported by written acknowledgement from the charity that also states no goods or services were provided.

Gifts made to donor-advised funds do not qualify. A donoradvised fund is held by a public charity that allows donors to make tax-deductible contributions, receive immediate tax benefits and then recommend grants to other charities at a later time.

This universal charitable giving tax deduction will reduce your taxable income but not your adjusted gross income (AGI). This is a subtle but important distinction because many tax provisions are based on AGI such as IncomeRelated Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) premiums (the additional charge that individuals with higher incomes face on top of the standard Medicare Part B and Part D premiums)…the income limits for Roth IRA contributions… and the 3.8% investment-income surtax.

In other words, the total value of your itemized deductions cannot reduce your tax bill by more than 35% of the amount deducted. So high-income filers donating $10,000 will receive a maximum deduction of only $3,500 instead of the current $3,700.

Itemizers who make charitable contributions will be able to claim a tax deduction only to the extent that their contributions exceed 0.5% of their AGI. Example: If you’re a couple with an AGI of $300,000, the first $1,500 of charitable donations won’t reduce your taxable income.

Strategic Tax Moves to Consider Donors still have several months left to make their contributions for 2025 and beyond before changes from the OBBBA kick in. Consider these strategies…

If you are likely to take the standard deduction: Hold off on smaller cash donations until 2026. That way you will benefit from the new universal deduction for non-itemizers.

If you are older and taking required minimum distributions (RMDs): Donate by taking a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your traditional IRAs. Reason: These donations may save you substantially more tax than an itemized deduction for a charitable gift. Note that the QCDs do have limits—$108,000 in 2025 for eligible individuals—which could be increased in 2026. This distribution can be used to satisfy the RMD for the year as well. The transfer must be a direct transfer from the IRA to the charity…and you must be at least 70½. If you itemize: Accelerate contributions—giving more in 2025 and less in subsequent years—especially if you are considering large, multiyear charitable gifts…are funding a donor-advised fund…or think you will be close to or exceed the new 0.5% AGI floor in 2026. Frontloading planned donations could preserve more of your deduction under the current, more favorable rules.

At the same time, the OBBBA has introduced two new limits on charitable giving tax deductions for taxpayers who do itemize…

If you are deciding whether to itemize: Realize that while you face deduction limits for charitable contributions, the OBBBA provides new charitable giving tax deductions, some of which apply to tax year 2025. Example: The limit itemizers can take on deductions for state and local taxes (SALT) will be increased dramatically for the tax years 2025 through 2029. The ceiling on the deduction increases from $10,000 to $40,000 in 2025 for most joint filers (from $5,000 to $20,000 for most individual filers), then increases 1% each year from 2026 to 2029.

A Small Gesture, A Big Impact: How a Blaine Car Wash Employee Built an Unseen Tribute to Local Officers At the Blaine Police Department, reminders of community support often arrive during major events, planned outreach programs, or formal recognition ceremonies. But this fall, one of the most meaningful reminders of all came quietly from across the street — inside a small office at a Holiday gas station car wash.

For years, Blaine police officers have stopped at the Holiday station near department headquarters to wash their squad cars, a routine part of daily patrol. Those brief visits led to countless interactions with Raymond, a longtime staff member whose steady positivity and pride in his work have made him a familiar and well-loved figure among officers.

Raymond’s upbeat conversations, his interest in the officers’ work, and the simple kindness he shows during each encounter have, over time, built a genuine connection. Many officers say he has brightened difficult shifts without ever realizing it.

This fall, Police Chief Brian Podany decided to formally recognize that impact. He presented Raymond with a Blaine Police Department Outreach Challenge Coin — a token awarded sparingly to honor individuals who strengthen the city’s culture of respect, partnership, and community service.

The gesture meant a great deal to Raymond. But what happened next surprised even the Chief.

During a later visit, Raymond asked Chief Podany whether he had ever seen the small office behind the car wash. Franchise Equity Partners Buys IMO Car Wash from Driven Brands Driven Brands, an automotive services platform, has agreed to sell IMO, its international car wash business, to Franchise Equity Partners for €406 million (around $472 million).

The transaction, expected to close in Q1 2026 pending regulatory approvals, is part of Driven’s broader effort to streamline operations and focus on its core North American businesses. The company intends to use the proceeds to reduce debt and fund general corporate purposes.

Headquartered in the U.K., IMO operates an international car wash network, with over 750 locations across Europe.

The divestiture reflects Driven Brands’ strategic decision to exit non-core international operations and simplify its portfolio.

Medicare’s “prior authorization” requirements are

Starting in 2026, Medicare in Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington state will require medical providers to obtain authorization before covering 17 fraudprone and potentially unnecessary medical services. New Texas stock exchange launching in 2026, reports

It gives Texas greater control over capital-markets infrastructure. Texas is home to the most Fortune 500 companies in the US and has a $2.4 trillion economy. Increased competition with existing exchanges could bring lower costs, better technology and systems not burdened by legacy approaches.

rug-coverage denial rates are rising, we hear from patient advocate Caitlin Donovan. According to health-data company Komodo Health, prescription drug denials by private insurers increased 25% from 2016 to 2023. The nonprofit Patient Advocate Foundation says that requests for an appeal is one of the common reasons people con-tact them. Driving the increase: Rising drug costs...insurers’ use of Al to make coverage decisions...and other factors. Selfdefense: Appeal if your insurer declines a prescription-more than 40% of internal appeals are successful.
