RED SEA Here, in the cradle of civilisation, divers are blessed with incredible treasures above and below water.

tretching 2,250km from Suez to Djibouti, the Red Sea divides Africa from Asia and is one of the richest and most diverse marine environments in the world. Excellent water visibility, sumptuous coral gardens, world-class wrecks, stunning wall dives… the Red Sea offers underwater visitors a tremendously diverse experience coupled with stunning marine life encounters on every dive. Seven countries border the Red Sea but it is Egypt that has

captured diver’s hearts over the decades. Many European divers take their first breaths underwater in the Egyptian Red Sea, only to be seduced by its incredible beauty and the local, legendary hospitality, to return again and again. Egypt offers consistently great diving and its proximity to Europe and ease to travel to, means it remains enduringly popular amongst divers of every level. Whatever you’re looking for underwater, Egypt is sure to surpass your expectations. Dive in!

“Our 8th trip here and they just get better and better!! A trip scuba diving at Roots Red Sea has become an annual occasion for us - in fact this was our 8th trip there - Roots has become a bit of a home from home for us!” RICHARD STEVENS – BLACK MANTA PHOTOGRAPHY

Take a step back in time to before the commercialisation and development of the Red Sea, with pristine reefs, abundant marine life and only a few ardent divers cruising the reefs. Welcome to Roots Red Sea! With an ideal location set in the desert mountains away from all development, Roots Red Sea provides the perfect balance of comfort, service and idyllic isolation. Over the past 10 years, Clare and Steve have had the simple mantra to provide divers with exactly what they always look for when they travel the world diving. The whole resort resolves around the diving activities. This clearly works, as witnessed by the ever-growing number of regular clients and the outstanding reviews which include inclusion in to the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame for consistent achievement of Certificate of Excellence and Travellers’ Choice awards. It’s not just recreational diving at Roots. The Open Ocean Science Centres operate a Marine Biology programme from their lab on site offering both Citizen Science activities and courses, plus facilities for education with several regular universities completing projects and courses. There is also a solid volunteering programme that works with the local community providing education and organising environmental clean-ups; everyone is welcome to get involved. Roots Red Sea is ideal for every diver from complete novice to vastly experienced, and the range of dive sites is exceptional. Whether it’s individuals, clubs or schools, your stay will be tailored to your needs. There simply isn’t a better alternative for your next Red Sea dive trip. BIG ENOUGH TO DELIVER AND SMALL ENOUGH TO CARE. Elite Diving with Divers United is a British owned and managed family business that has won many awards with different Dive publications. It was formed by husband and wife team Alun and Moyra Evans, who are divers themselves and have been diving since 1984. They settled on the shores of the Red Sea in 2002, to pursue their dream of making a career of the activity they both love so much. In 2005 they formed Elite Diving which in turn took ownership of Divers United in early 2008.  With Elite, every guest becomes a friend, and most come back every year - some, twice or three times a year, to dive with Alun, Moyra, G & V and the rest of the team in the sub tropical waters and world class reefs of Sharm el Sheikh; also diving the world famous World War 2 shipwreck S.S.Thistlegorm. As safety has always been a priority, together with high quality and standards of service, they became in a short time a 5 star PADI Resort. Now a PADI Instructor Development Centre (IDC), they also offer BSAC Technical Courses. Their dive boat regularly takes divers to the famous diving area of Ras Mohamed National Park where they can dive Shark and Yolanda Reefs, Jackfish Alley, Ras Gahzlani and many more. The boat also alternates its daily destination with The Straits of Tiran, where you can dive other world-class coral reefs such as Jackson Reef, Gordon and Woodhouse Reefs. There are more and more sightings of Mantas and Whale Sharks on a regular basis, which gives us great satisfaction knowing that the reefs in this area are in a very good condition. Also in Sharm, dreams come true. Gwyn met his wife Valeria, an Italian diving instructor who loves the Red Sea and who has the same passion for the deep blue. Elite Diving with Divers United has now become even more of a family business with the addition of ‘G’ and ‘V’ (Gwyn and Valeria) to the team. You can expect high safety standards and service, with British humour and Italian hospitality, where everyone feels at home and a part of the extended family.  Valeria has already become very popular with Elite’s regular divers, when socialising with them by ‘G’s side in the evenings after diving. We cater for solo divers, couples, and groups - no matter how large. Read about Elite Diving on TripAdvisor, Girls that SCUBA and also Come and be part of the family. Come and have fun!

“Without any doubt, the best dive centre that I’ve used. It is more like diving with a club rather than a centre. A British family run business, with family values.” DAVID JONES: TELFORD, ENGLAND.

CARIBBEAN An exceptional variety of underwater experiences coupled with vibrant culture means divers visiting the Caribbean are truly spoilt for choice.

t’s hard to imagine a more picture-perfect holiday destination than a Caribbean island with sunny, sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, a glass or two of a rum cocktail and the famously laidback local hospitality. But place your head under that perfectly clear blue water and a whole new world of adventure awaits… The Caribbean Sea has attracted adventurous travellers since time began and the sheer number of sunken wrecks – historical and manmade - is a testament to the area’s colourful maritime past. Each island in the Caribbean has its own particular charm but most

P??_DTC1_OPENERS.indd 19

share an exciting duality of both an Atlantic and Caribbean coastline. Strong ocean currents typify the Atlantic side, bringing nutrient-rich waters that attract an impressive array of marine life such as sharks, rays, mantas and turtles. Impressive drift diving opportunities abound. The Caribbean Sea boasts beautiful coral walls and pinnacles, pretty reefs packed with interesting fish life and all the better visibility to see them with. The islands of the Caribbean offer one of the widest ranges of diving anywhere on the planet. Here, variety is quite literally the spice of life.

Dive Dominica

and let your heart race with surprise OMINICA, ALSO KNOWN as ‘The Nature Island’, is a paradise for scuba diving lovers. Unspoiled and unforgettable, the seascape surrounding the island is a breath-taking as its towering mountains bathed in tropical mists. The water is clear, the marine life varied and the weather warm enough to spend an entire day in the sea. The waters here are so good in fact that Dominica is the only country in the world where a pod of the mighty sperm whale resides year-round! On dedicated whale-watching

trips, sightings of these majestic creatures are common, along with dolphin pods, humpback and killer whales. There are dive sites all along Dominica’s west coast, many of which reflect the steep and dramatic topography topside, with steep drop-offs, walls, and volcanic pinnacles. Colourful and healthy coral reefs teem with marine creatures of all kinds, including frogfish, seahorses, passing hawksbill turtles and eagle rays. With the incredible abundance of wildlife, Dominica will truly be one of your most enjoyable dives in the Caribbean.

IMAGES Above: Scotts Head. Below: Champagne Reef.

It is, undoubtedly, the most famous dive site of Dominica. This spot takes its name from the thousands of bubbles escaping from the ground, just like swimming in a glass of champagne. Easily accessible from the shore, this reef has also become a reference for snorkelers and free divers. Divers are most likely to see sea turtles, seahorses, scorpion fish, squid, lobsters and crabs. This dive site is accessible to all levels, from beginners to experienced divers.

A tiny village on the southwest coast of Dominica, Scotts Head overlooks Soufrière Bay — one of the most popular diving and snorkelling destinations in the world. Divers usually begin on Swiss Cheese, a large rock formation home to the well-known Soldierfish Cave. Not actually a cave, this swimthrough is usually packed with soldier fish and grunts that form a curtain in front of you, briefly parting to swallow you into the school as you pass through. At a depth of only 35 ft, a picturesque swim-through bisects the pinnacle, bringing you to the “other side” -- a steep wall on the inside of the volcanic crater that falls off to more than 120 ft.

18/10/2019 13:07

This dive site takes you to a steep underwater cliff diving 500 meters deep. During your immersion, you will fly over a vertiginous wall covered with corals, gorgonians, anemones and sponges. L’abym is one of the most famous in Dominica for underwater photography because of its colourful environment and its rich macro life. If you are a good spotter, you will probably find seahorses, crabs, shrimps and even nudibranchs. You can also dive with stingrays, sea turtles, barracudas, parrot fish or scorpion fish. DISCOVER DOMINICA AND COME ALIVE! There is so much more to explore on land too - whether

AD DOC DTC 2019.indd 21

you’re looking for the best diving in the Caribbean, a hiking trip through the rainforest, relaxing afternoons in bubbling mud pools, or simply to soak up the sun and breathe in the fresh rainforest air, Dominica welcomes you! The Nature Island has everything from extreme sports to eco tours, from spas to whale watching, plus the Morne Trois Pitons National Park—the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Caribbean. No matter what you choose to do, Dominica offers an authentic adventure amid the unforgettable magic of nature unspoiled. n MORE INFORMATION or call 020 3217 7060

“Tobago’s reefs are some of the best in the Caribbean and Derek is undoubtedly the most experienced and knowledgeable dive operator on the island. Brilliant customer service, guaranteed satisfaction.” DR. OWEN DAY, MARINE BIOLOGIST

Tobago’s southerly location provides the ingredients for a wonderful combination of rich coral and sponge coverage, together with a density and diversity of marine life surpassing most in the Caribbean. A range of diving opportunities abound with lush coral reefs, rocky reefs with colourful encrusting sponges and coral or fascinating shipwrecks, all of which harbour an abundance of marine life. Tobago’s diving is much more than pretty reef fish, it’s about turtles, sharks, cobias, moray eels, stingrays, eagle rays and mantas; it’s about short nosed baitfish, octopi, cornet fish and garden eels; it’s about sharing stories on the dive boat, making friends and enjoying a cold beverage at day’s end. Undersea Tobago, “where personal attention meets adventure” is located on the Coco Reef Resort’s private beach, and in recognition of service quality is also the preferred dive centre for the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, the Mount Irvine Bay Resort and Starfish Tobago, along with other properties. A PADI Dive Resort, Undersea Tobago has been providing dive charters and tuition since 1997, introduced nitrox and kids programs to the island, and is the recipient of multiple awards inclusive of TripAdvisor’s Hall of Fame. “I have visited Phil and Helen many times now and am always welcomed with the same warm welcome and friendly smile I received my very first visit - they make you feel so comfortable it’s almost like coming home!” CHARLOTTE

DIVE GRENADA run by Phil, Helen and the dogs ‘Jack & Jerry’ are a professional and friendly dive shop in Grenada. Their inclusion into the ‘TripAdvisor Hall of Fame’ in 2019 on achieving five consecutive ‘Certificates of Excellence’ was a well-deserved accolade for their highly organised, safe and service-focused dive operation in Grenada. Dive Grenada perfectly meets the needs of divers traveling alone or in small groups who seek to avoid the crowds of larger operators. They actively limit numbers to ensure a relaxed and un-crowded experience, and with a maximum of 6 to 8 divers per trip you are guaranteed the personal attention of their Divemasters. There is no better way to enjoy the great diving that Grenada has to offer. Their new purpose-built dive shop is a worldclass facility. Located on the beautiful golden sands of Grand Anse Beach just feet away from the warm clear Caribbean Sea, the location is idyllic. Their central location is perfect, affording short and easy boat rides. With a simple 10 to 15 minutes’ ride in their custom dive boat guests can enjoy more than 30 outstanding reef, wreck and drift sites. Dive Grenada has a vibrant staff of home grown Grenadian Divemasters and Instructors who have clearly been nurtured and well trained. Their passion for Grenada’s outstanding marine environment and pride in the culture and history of the island is infectious. Phil, Helen and all their staff clearly work hard to ensure guests enjoy a relaxed ‘boutique’ diving experience; your equipment is assembled for you prior to your arrival and carried to the boat, all you do is slip into your wetsuit and go diving. Helen’s homemade cookies are a highlight of the surface interval, as is the team sharing stories as they switch over tanks and set up your gear for you. If you like dogs, then Jack & Jerry will be waiting for you on your return for a much-needed tummy rub. You really do feel like family when diving with Dive Grenada. Dive Grenada are building Grenada’s first artificial reef as a philanthropic project, constructing ‘pyramids’ from concrete blocks and then placing them together to form the ‘Grand Anse Artificial Reef Project’ (GAARP). The project is working well with nearly 30 pyramids in place and a remarkable amount of species of fish and marine life already inhabit the area. The project is also being used as an education tool for the local school children to learn about marine conservation.

INDIAN OCEAN The third largest ocean in the world… but within its vastness, lie tiny island pearls feted by divers as some of the finest dive spots on the planet.

he most well known destination within the Indian Ocean is the Maldives: 1,192 coral islands grouped in a double loop of 26 atolls making a chain from north to south. Travellers are seduced by the islands’ incredible beauty with their white sandy beaches lapped by clear azure waters. But each island is really the tip of an oceanic volcanic mountain range, and it is only when you put your head underwater that the excitement unfolds. Oceanic currents flow through the deep channels surrounding the atolls of the Maldives bringing with them sharks and mantas galore. These tidal waters, packed with 0 3 2 | D I V E T R AV E L CO M PA N I O N

marine life, provide some of the world’s best drift dives. Meanwhile, sheltered reefs and lagoons allow for a more relaxed style of diving with time to explore. Almost in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a less discovered diver’s paradise with over 100 sites around its coral coastline. The island is a nature lover’s dream with its huge variety of underwater species complimented by a lush, tropical interior. Sri Lanka is also an upcoming destination for European divers: spectacular wildlife, Blue Whales, adventurous shipwrecks and more… just waiting to be explored by you.

“I would give 6 stars if this were possible, for everything I have experienced onboard the Carpe Novo. Everything was perfect from the cabin, to meals and the diving.” FRANCISCO WU

Seize The Day with Carpe Diem Cruises to experience the thrill and natural beauty of the Indian Ocean in one of the world’s best scuba diving and surfing destinations. With our three boats, The Carpe Diem, The Carpe Vita and The Carpe Novo, we connect the modern traveller to nature, with memories that will long be remembered. Safari cruise adventures in the Maldives with Carpe Diem Cruises are remote, exotic and exciting. From our routes to the far north, the central atolls or the deep south, there is an itinerary to suit everybody. Whale sharks and mantas are the top two on every diver’s bucket list and these can be found year round in the Maldives. The Maldives is thought to have the largest population of Alfredi Mantas and for the chance to snorkel with these majestic mantas, we offer itineraries in the summer to Baa to visit the world famous UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay. In South Ari we offer the chance to snorkel with the gentle giants of the ocean, the whale sharks year round. For non-stop adrenalin filled action, choose one of our far south itineraries, during January – March where strong currents attract sharks in their hundreds. These itineraries are best suited to more advanced divers due to the stronger current. Each year we also offer specially scheduled “Dive With A Purpose” trips with visiting scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Marine biologists also join us on some scheduled trips where guests can learn more about marine conservation, new research techniques and conduct reef surveys to ensure our underwater world remains resilient to threats from global warming. The Carpe Diem, meaning “Seize The Day” started operations in 2008 and has 10 cabins divided over 3 decks, catering for 20 people. The Carpe Vita, meaning “Seize Life” started operating in 2011 and has 10 cabins, catering for 20 people and the Carpe Novo, started operations in 2016 and caters for 21 divers in 11 cabins. Our brand has been voted in “The Top Ten Liveaboards In The World.” Find us on Facebook at Carpe Diem Maldives Pvt Ltd and on Instagram @carpediemmaldives. OCEAN SPIRIT SCUBA DIVING - MAURITIUS “One of the best diving centres I’ve been to! Had a great four days diving with Ocean Spirit, including two shark safari dives.” FRANCESCA PEREIRA, LONDON, UK

“Knowledgeable, safe & fun diving!” ANNA, BERLIN, GERMANY

Ocean Spirit is a PADI 5 Star Diving Centre in Pereybere, Mauritius. We are proud to be the only Project Aware Conservation Green Star centre and we take our conservation credentials very seriously indeed. Ocean Spirit offers shark diving, wreck diving, dramatic drop offs and drifts, exquisite corals, rare macro and abundant marine life in a pollution-free, pristine environment. Sharks circle year round in the caverns under the Northern Islands and we dive in crystal clear, clean water with 80m viz. In winter seasonal up-wellings bring plankton, the viz can drop to 20m and the ocean is full of shoaling fish, whales and dolphins. Endangered Hawksbill and Green Turtles are here year round. Diving is all about socializing and making new friends, and at Ocean Spirit we make sure you will do exactly that. Our dive masters and instructors love diving, they know their fish and they share their passion. Beach barbecues, lunches and de-briefs mean that you will make new friends from all over the world. It’s a lot of fun. We offer GROUP SPECIALS to BSAC dive clubs, so please contact Jill Holloway at info@osdiving to book. An independent previously British colony, Mauritius is an English, French and Creole speaking Island renowned for its British efficiency, elegant French flair and Creole exuberance, tempered with gentle Hindu harmony. Modern, well managed and with great restaurants, bars and entertainment. Abundant ATMs, zero crime. It’s an irresistible combination. In the centre of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is on the largely unexplored Mascarene plateau; just 9 percent of this paradise has been charted by divers so far. The Indian Ocean temperature is below the coral bleaching median; our corals are growing and everything thrives. There’s no jet lag, we’re in the same time zone as the UK, and the climate is tropical yet temperate and benign; land temperatures drop to 19*C in the winter and rise to 30°C in the summer. Accommodation choices are abundant, excellent and vary from ultra-luxury resorts to 4-star hotels and exquisite French boutique apartments and B&Bs. Sri Lanka is home to an incredible range of marine life including the largest mammal on earth, the Blue Whale. On reef dives you can find moray eels, rays, barracuda and sea turtles to name but a few. For wreck diving, Colombo is best where there are many wrecks for both recreational and technical divers, ranging from a WW1 Armed Merchant Ship to a brand new ship recently sunk in 2009. Taprobane Divers, a PADI Dive Resort, opened in April 2016 and is run by Sri Lankan and British couple Rohan and Emma, offering tailored diving packages, courses and accommodation – both in Trincomalee on the East Coast and our new location on the West Coast to open in 2020. All equipment is high specification and is maintained to British standards to ensure constant high standards. Taprobane Divers is one of the few centres to offer Nitrox diving and has Sri Lanka’s only resident Tec deep instructor trained in the United Kingdom. Taprobane Divers also offers snorkeling activities for non-divers, a whole range of PADI recreational courses and PADI TecRec courses, as well as dolphin and whale watching at its Trincomalee location. Hence, fish life, especially pelagic, is plentiful around the reef. The resort’s house reef is there for all guests to enjoy, from beginners learning how to snorkel for the first time, to expert divers and those wishing to night dive. The resort has a team of multilingual professionals on site with TGI Maldives, who are veterans of Maldives diving and form a core part of the OBLU Helengeli guest experience. OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli is currently one out of the five operating resorts by Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts. The dynamic Indian Ocean based hospitality brand firmly believes in all guests having a uniquely localized experience within their tailor-made Holiday Plans. EUROPE Often the best things are those closest to us. Europe offers some amazing and unexpected underwater experiences if you know where to go!

ost European divers learn to dive in their own backyard and wherever you are located in the second smallest continent, there is a multitude of destinations just a road trip or a short flight away. Malta offers some of the Mediterranean’s best diving and it is justifiably popular with recreational and technical divers alike. The rugged topography of the Maltese Islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - makes for an underwater playground of caverns, swim-throughs and striking scenery amidst spectacularly photogenic clear waters. Malta also offers some of the finest wreck diving opportunities in the world, with an amazing collection of ship, plane and 0 4 4 | D I V E T R AV E L CO M PA N I O N

submarine wrecks that attract history buffs and deep divers. The Canary Islands are well known as a popular beach holiday spot but divers are attracted by the year-round warmth and fascinating underwater landscape. It’s a short hop to Lanzarote from the UK and the Island makes a perfect winter diving destination. Cyprus offers a tempting combination of year-round warm waters, sunshine and sandy beaches. Head underwater for an amazing mix of diving including the renowned wreck of the Zenobia. Finally, take a look at Croatia. The Adriatic is one of the cleanest and most beautiful seas in the world. Still mostly unexplored by divers, Croatia offers plentiful marine life in a stunning setting.

ASIA Asia offers the visiting diver the greatest diversity of marine life on the planet. From the tiniest critter to the biggest fish in the sea, Asian dive spots offer adventure, excitement and new discoveries.

t the heart of Asian diving lies the renowned Coral Triangle, a true utopia for divers. Here, in a marine area that covers a large part of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste, is found the greatest concentration of marine species worldwide. The chance to encounter unique and unusual species attracts legions of underwater photographers, marine biologists and curious divers every year. It is said that the world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia, offers the greatest marine diversity of all and it offers an incredible variety of underwater environments and dive styles. With 18,000 islands, two oceans and six different seas to explore you could spend a lifetime

checking off the species in your reef id guide. The Philippines is fast catching up its neighbour. Forming the northern apex of the Coral Triangle, these 7,107 islands are sandwiched between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean and have long been a favourite of well-travelled divers. Rich reefs, an accessible mix of macro and pelagic life, historical wrecks and renowned hospitality make these islands ever more popular. Don’t miss out on Malaysia and the legendary diving off Borneo. Sipadan’s deep walls and its turtles, barracuda and sharks are world-renowned, plus incredible macro diving in Mabul and Kapalai.

Located directly in the resort, the dive centre offers generous space for the guests’ own equipment and rental equipment. Photographers enjoy an air-conditioned camera room with airguns and battery charging stations. Guided dives are offered several times a day, often starting directly from the beach – guests love the house reef in front of the resort. The resort recently introduced a PADI Ghost Pipefish Distinctive Specialty, exploring and understanding this shy and well-camouflaged creature. Those who love wide-angle-photography and big schools of fish will also be delighted. Excursions to nearby Apo Island cater to divers looking for fantastic wall diving with healthy corals and large schools of fish. Free divers will find shallow reef slopes and few currents, offering perfect conditions for free diving. On land, Salaya Beach Houses offers yoga classes and numerous excursions to choose from. “A big thankyou to everyone who works here. We just got back from a trip where we took a big group and they were so well organised and everyone had a blast. We will be back!” KATE SCOLLARY

The triangle between Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines is one of the most biodiverse marine habitats in the world. Strong ocean currents, deep sea trenches and sea mounts, combined with active volcanic islands, have created a complex oceanographic environment that is a paradise for divers. The beauty of this region lies in its diversity. At Scuba Junkie we offer four award-winning eco dive resorts which all have a large focus on marine conservation. Each is situated in some of the best dive locations in the world.

The world-famous Sipadan Island is home to thousands of turtles, schooling sharks (including Hammerheads), swirling barracuda, and awe-inspiring coral walls dropping more than 2,000ft straight down to the sea floor. Sipadan is frequently voted as the world’s number one dive destination but the diving doesn’t stop there - we also offer amazing diving at Mabul and Kapalai Island.

Komodo is a destination that is stunning both above and below the water. On land, it’s the only place on the planet where you can see Komodo Dragons in the wild! Whilst below water, it is common to see lots of Manta Rays, sharks, tuna, barracuda, turtles, Dugongs, as well as some amazing macro.

This destination is a well kept secret and one you must visit before it becomes a massive tourism attraction. Stunning wall dives with Hammerheads, resident Thresher sharks, Guitar sharks, White tips and Black tips, and so many turtles and pristine coral and that’s at the “other” islands! Sangalaki island is famous for its resident, all-year Manta Rays, which offer an experience you won’t forget. Then whilst you’re not diving, there is the jellyfish lake (one of only a few in the world). Don’t worry, they don’t sting! Plus, we have Whaleshark Point where it’s very common to snorkel with Whalesharks.

Our brand new resort is situated on Nusa Penida Island, just a short boat ride away from mainland Bali.   Away from the crowds and in the centre of the Nusa Penida diving area, the resort is very close to the dive sites offering amazing coral, year round Manta Rays and sharks - Wobblegong, Bamboo, Thresher and White tips - plus seasonal Mola Mola. THE AMERICAS The Americas contain many of the world’s most exhilarating dives. Here, diving is all about BIG experiences.

he Americas are full of bucket-list dive opportunities. From close-up Great White Shark encounters in Guadalupe to the world’s largest Blue Hole in Belize, wherever you dive on the two continents of North and South America, excitement is pretty much guaranteed. Mexico offers the best of two worlds. Divers flock to the sunny Caribbean coast for incredible reef diving and the mystical Cenotes. Whilst the deep blue waters of the Pacific are known for spectacular pelagic encounters. Belize’s Blue Hole was lauded a ‘must-dive’ by Cousteau, but there is a whole lot more to this unspoilt dive destination including the second longest barrier reef in the world. 070 | D I V E T R AV E L CO M PA N I O N

World class reef diving can be found on the 400 islands and coastline of Belize, which is also well known for its whale shark sightings. Costa Rica attracts true nature lovers and is an incredibly diverse and exciting destination for a dive travel adventure. Diving with hundreds of Hammerheads at Cocos Island is one of the world’s best liveaboard experiences but be sure to set feet on dry land to explore the breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Somewhat cooler, but no less adventurous, Alaska offers some of the best cold water diving in the world and amazing animal encounters. At the other end of North America, head to Florida for manatees, shipwrecks and spring water caverns.

North 60 Adventures ALASKA

“Sharks, Bears, Orcas, Sea Lions, Otters, Grey Whales, Eagles and Salmon. Who could ask for more? Thanks for a great trip!” JEFF KURR, DISCOVERY CHANNEL SHARK WEEK PRODUCER

We are the only operation in the world offering free divers the chance to swim with Salmon Sharks. We are also the authority on Salmon Shark migration, behaviors and feeding patterns. With nearly a decade of research and learning how to interact with these animals, Boone and his wife Gina Hodgin have become experts on what makes these incredible animals tick. Trip leaders, production companies and divers around the world have used us to gain unparalleled access to a pelagic fish that had previously been extremely hard to find and even harder to swim with. Come see how Ravencroft has opened the door for new shark adventures in the great Alaskan wilderness! Not only are there sharks to see, we’ve also added new and exciting expeditions for eagle predation from the waterline, swimming into massive jellyfish blooms, and jumping in with calved icebergs at Columbia Glacier. Boone and Gina have combined their wealth of knowledge from years of interactions while living and operating Ravencroft Lodge to bring you an expedition experience in the last frontier that’s like no other! OCEANIA The other end of the planet for European divers but the quality and range of diving in Oceania makes it more than worth the air miles to get there!

he diving in Australasia and the South Pacific is renowned as some of the finest worldwide. Whatever kind of diver you are, a trip to this part of the world should be top of your wish list. And the area is so vast and so varied, once in a lifetime is never going to be enough. With 2,300km to explore, divers will find everything along the Great Barrier Reef from shallow lagoons and lush coral gardens, to the exciting offshore reefs of the Coral Sea that promise jaw-dropping shark encounters and more. At the top of the Coral Sea, lie the incredible islands of Papua New Guinea, one of diving’s last frontiers. This is pristine diving country; remote, mostly unexplored reefs, jam-packed with every marine creature

imaginable. PNG also offers incredible above water scenery and an amazing collection of World War II shipwrecks. Wreck fans are spoilt for choice in Micronesia, but wildlife lovers head to Yap, which is known as the Manta Ray capital of the world. Meanwhile, Kosrae offers untouched reefs in a rare, remote paradise. The archipelago of Palau’s walls and channels are famous for exhilarating currents and world-class pelagic sightings; it also boasts more incredible wrecks to explore. Finally, no adventure down under would be complete without a ‘kia ora’ to New Zealand. A land of adventurous beauty where the spectacular topside scenery is more than matched underwater with stunning fjords, historical wrecks, plentiful reefs and kelp forests.

RELAXED… REFRESHING Established in 1994, Kosrae Nautilus Resort is the only NAUI dive resort on Kosrae, Micronesia and offers a remote diving experience in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Kosrae is truly a remote traditional island with less than 6,000 people. Here, you will experience diving on incredible reefs and be amazed that you are the only divers, not only diving on a particular site but on the island as a whole. One of Kosrae’s greatest attractions is the clear, clean ocean and its extraordinary living coral reefs that completely surround it. Offshore, the coral reefs slope steeply into the clear blue depths. Both vertical drop-offs and undulating profiles of cascading corals appear before you, as underwater visibility averages 100 to 200 feet. The reefs comprise hundreds of densely packed coral species, both hard and soft, attracting an abundance of marine life. A diver could easily observe 50 species of fish in a single dive. Turtles and rays inhabit the waters of this island paradise, and if you enjoy finding nudibranchs and other macro subjects, you’ll be delighted. Surrounded by fringing reef, Kosrae has some of the most pristine hard coral formations, with natural creations so spectacular they resemble underwater wonderlands or castles. Kosrae Nautilus Resort made world headlines in 2016 when it was raffled off by the previous owners, with the new owner picking up the hotel and dive resort for $150! Kosrae remains an immaculate garden of flowers, citrus trees, and rich, verdant greenery; a place for divers and non divers to experience its beauty. When not diving, explore Mt. Oma to visit multiple cascading waterfalls, or WWII Japanese caves hidden in the lush jungles of this island paradise. Kosrae is also home to the world’s last Ka forest, a protected sanctuary of Terminalia Carolinensis trees. It offers visitors spectacular scenery of the 100-foot-high canopy formed by densely leafed branches that only grow from the very top of these massive trunks. Rich in historical sites and ruins, this jewel of Micronesia was a favourite haven of pirate Bully Hayes. Pirate or not, you’ll find adventures aplenty in spectacular Kosrae.

DIVE! TUTUKAKA NEW ZEALAND Washed by warm currents sweeping down from the Coral Sea, the Poor Knights Islands are ever-present on the horizon of most of the northeast coast of Northland, and the easiest harbour from which to access them is Tutukaka. Although the trip will only take a little over 45 minutes, it is a world away as you venture out to this “Middle Earth in the Middle of the Ocean”. The islands are an internationally recognized icon, up for World Heritage Status and 23km off the Tutukaka Coast where the island’s 11 million-year-old volcanic origins provide myriad spectacular drop-offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels, all inhabited by an amazing array of underwater life. Isolated from the mainland for many thousands of years, they are the remnants of ancient volcanoes that erupted in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Below the water, for 800 metres around the islands, is a marine reserve. Above, the islands are a nature reserve. Declared tapu by local Maori almost 140 years ago after a bloody massacre, the history is dramatic. Left to nature, the archaeological remnants are the most pristine in New Zealand’s heritage, the only disturbance being the roots of the mighty Pohutukawa canopy that has risen overhead. Directly on the migratory path of a number of species, a trip is often accompanied by both Common and Bottlenose Dolphins, and there are several species of Whales, including Orca, Minke, Bryde’s and Pilot Whales that feed off the coast. The complex underwater landscape is a unique environment. Sub-tropical and temperate marine life coexists with extraordinary diversity, beauty and density. Over 125 species of fish share this environment with soft corals, encrusting sponges, vibrant anemones, Ecklonia kelp forests, mating stingrays, visiting pelagic Manta Rays, gorgonian fans and myriad other life forms. Having been a Marine Reserve for over 20 years the fish behaviour continues regardless and they interact quite happily with snorkellers, divers and swimmers. There are Australasian Gannet colonies, breeding grounds of rare seabirds including ternlets, and Buller’s shearwater. This is the only nesting place in the world for the tens of thousands of Buller’s shearwater that fly in from North America. There seems to be a special “X” factor and locals who are passionate about this place, seem to pass on the special feeling as they share the tumultuous and tragic Maori history that makes this place so spiritual. Arguably the best sub-tropical diving in the world, certainly worth crossing the world for, and known as the Galapagos of the South Pacific. PAIHIA DIVE NEW ZEALAND At Paihia Dive we dive the two best wrecks in New Zealand!

“Amazing experience! Saw so much. Had perfect conditions and the dive instructors were fantastic. Very helpful and patient. Will definitely be back.” MAREE H.

The Rainbow Warrior is the historical and controversial Greenpeace flagship, bombed in Auckland Harbour by French Secret Service agents on July 10th 1985. The wreck was refloated for forensic examination but found to be unrepairable, so it was towed to the Cavalli Islands and sunk on 12th December 1987. This artificial reef has matured into an ever-growing host to marine life and is an excellent shallow water wreck dive suitable for certified open water divers. The wreck is a splendour of colour, with jewel coloured anemones clinging to the rails in hues of purple, yellow and blue. It is a great underwater photography subject and one of the world’s most famous wrecks; a most memorable dive. After diving the Rainbow Warrior, we head to a beach for our lunch, followed by a reef dive at one of the many amazing reef sites at the Cavalli Islands. The HMNZS Canterbury was a broad beam Leander-class frigate operated by the Royal New Zealand Navy from 1971 to 2005. The Canterbury wreck is 114m long and rests in one of the most stunning and sheltered locations in New Zealand. Accessible almost every day, a trip to Deep Water cove will take you through the heart of the Bay of Islands. Sunk in 2007 by divers for diving, this wreck is now a diver’s playground covered in jewel anemones, sponge life and teaming with fish. This dive is followed by lunch and then a dive at one of the many dive sites in the Bay of Islands, which cater to all levels with a variety of depth and attractions.

“Diving with Sam’s Tours in Palau was a spectacular experience and full of stunning encounters underwater. The level of service and knowledge of Sam’s staff was flawless.” REINHARD OBORSKI, 67, 500+ DIVE ENTHUSIAST, GERMANY

Palau is a must on every diver’s bucket list. The pristine Pacific paradise was the first nation to declare its waters a shark sanctuary, followed by turning the 200-mile zone around the 350 islands into a marine sanctuary. Palau offers some of the most biologically diverse waters in the entire world. With over 1,500 species of fish, an abundance of large pelagic animals and over 700 species of corals, Palau is one of the most diverse tropical zones. Dozens of dive sites offer a rare variety: walls with fascinating coral formations; reef corners where the currents attract sharks; rays and schooling fish; channels and other sandy bottom sites; tunnels, holes, caves and caverns; and plenty of WWII freighter and plane wrecks. From macro to mantas, Palau has it all! The daily dive tours offer divers of all levels the chance to explore Palau’s magnificent reefs and biologically diverse environment. For advanced divers,Unique Dive Expeditions offers a oncein-a-lifetime diving experience based on the monthly lunar cycles. During Full and New Moons, different species of fish gather in huge aggregations to spawn. These mind-blowing spawning events usually attract Palau’s biggest predators as well. Whilst the diving in Palau is world renowned, there is a side to diving very few have experienced: technical diving. Dropoffs and walls that plummet to hundreds of meters, caves and caverns, wrecks remaining from the Japanese occupation of Palau - all offer opportunities for exploration for qualified and experienced tech divers. From extended range air dives to 180 ft/55 m with twin sets, to decompression gases and deep rebreather wall dives to 490 ft/150 m and beyond, Unique Dive Expeditions specialises in taking experienced technical divers to the deeper side of Palau. Home to Micronesia’s largest resident populations of terrestrial bird, animal and plant species, Palau’s biodiversity makes Palau an absolute treasure trove for avid birders and naturalists. Numerous land tours and kayak trips offer unique opportunities to explore Palau above water.

AFRICA Home to the so-called Big Five safari animals, it’s no surprise that the African continent offers similar big thrills underwater.

herever you travel in Africa, you’re sure of a great adventure. South Africa is justifiably famous for shark diving with over 100 species of shark in the waters here. Most divers choose to cage dive for the ultimate GWS experience but there is an array of expeditions, conservation projects and adventure tours that will give you a more three dimensional view of the country and its charismatic marine life. There is also the Sardine Run: the once a year migration north of billions of South African pilchards. Joining them are thousands of predators including dolphins, gannets, multiple shark species and more. This incredible, once in a lifetime experience, is well named as The Greatest Show on Earth for divers, photographers and anyone who

loves the natural world. Mozambique’s planktonrich waters famously support Manta Rays, Whale Sharks and Humpback Whales in real numbers. With 2000km of lush Indian Ocean coastline, the country is also home to the largest Marine Protected Area on the African continent. Turtle encounters are renowned here, as are richly stocked reefs, unexplored coral islands and mangrove forests. Further north, the Spice Islands of the Zanzibar archipelago have captured adventurous diver’s hearts for years. Lying off the coast of Tanzania, which makes them the perfect partner to a land-based wildlife safari, these islands seduce visitors with picture perfect scenery, stunning wall dives, coral gardens and marine parks.

SHARK & MARINE RESEARCH INSTITUTE White Shark Diving Company founded their Non-profit Organization - Shark & Marine Research Institute - in 2015, with the objective of conducting critically required research, in an effort to assist the South African Department of Environmental Affairs in making management decisions that directly impact South African shark populations and other marine life. SMRI’s research headquarters are situated in the small coastal fishing town of Kleinbaai, which is also home to the Great White Shark. Few places on earth carry all the necessary elements needed to create an outstanding marine science initiative that benefits not only the oceans and sharks, but also the local community. The institute hosts students and participants from all over the world to assist with the running of their various shark research projects, which are designed and executed by their dedicated Marine Biologist Mary Rowlinson, who works tirelessly in the field to obtain the necessary baseline data required to comprehend the complex ecosystem along the Kleinbaai/Gansbaai coast. The scientific projects in operation aim to understand the delicate food chain that starts with the smaller endemic shark species and runs all the way up to the iconic Great White Shark. The Institute’s goal is to monitor the changes caused by the impacts of human activities and expose anthropogenic shortcomings, in an attempt to understand and hopefully prevent, the knock on effects that have caused the decline in the Great White Shark population around South Africa. Their various shark research projects are run in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s worldrenowned Great White Shark expert, Dr. Sara Andreiotti with a key focus on Great White Shark population dynamics. The research team is also passionately involved in their local community through many social upliftment initiatives designed and implemented by their volunteers. There are no educational or diving requirements to join the programme and budding career scientists, marine biologists, Masters students and anyone with a passion for ocean conservation can apply to join this unique and life changing experience.

“As someone who is studying to become a Marine Biologist, this company has provided me with indispensable skills that will greatly aid me in my future career. An unforgettable and amazing experience!” MICHAEL BLANCO

In the heart of Mozambique, discover the natural wonders of the beautiful Bazaruto archipelago and the energetic reefs bursting with life. Odyssea Dive invites you for a day of adventure that you won’t forget! Journey to the Islands with bottle nose dolphins leading the way, as well as seeing the incredible sites of the sandbanks and ever changing coastline with the dramatic tide changes. Not one journey is the same! With two great dive locations, you will be easily entertained. Our 2 mile reef is the perfect dive for beginners to advanced divers, with sloping reefs starting at 5m to depths of 20m. Along the dive you will feel completely secure with small groups (max 6 divers to 1 PADI Instructor)’ who are experts at finding huge green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles, grey reef sharks, large rays, scorpion/crocodile fish, and so much more - including the elusive dugong! If you’re looking for a challenge, then Sao Sebastian is the dive spot to be, with strong currents, negative entry and depths of 30m, where we find the popular manta rays, guitar sharks, honeycomb sting rays, and thousands of other fish to discover! As a small, family orientated dive centre, we are committed to furthering the education and conservation of our gorgeous ocean. We use reusable water bottles, lunch boxes and bags, and we teach new divers how best to behave around coral reefs. What Odyssea Dive can offer: As an activity centre, we offer a range of water based activities; stand up paddle or kayak in the calm bay of Vilankulo, kitesurfing lessons for those windy days, and learn scuba (or refresh your skills) in our own specialized training pool! To unwind after a busy day, Odyssea Dive is partnered with Casa Babi; your home away from home. Relax with a cocktail, enjoy the view, put your feet up and watch the tide come in for the night under the moonlit sky. CONTACT: Telephone: 00 258 84 799 4328 Email: Website:
